Clear and delightful. I love your way of helping me understand the secrets of the masters. You are evidently a very accomplished artist yourself. Merci.
Simply wonderful, dear Herve, thank you! Well structured and presented, even with a little art history sprinkled in. Love it. I'm inspired to try a painting like this! 💖
Thank you! Your videos are very helpful to developing my love of painting. Due to the increased cost of paints and supplies I have started doing digital painting and then use my real paint for the ones I really like.
Thanks Alicia ! Yes, supplies can get costly, but I realised you don’t actually need much to practice. Keep the good stuff for projects close to your heart!
Thanks for your help! This video helped me navigate my way through an art assignment I am currently doing. I have to paint a Paul Cezanne painting on a wooden chair! Unfortunatly, I have to use acrylics, but this tutorial is making my painted apples look a little less terrible. Thanks again. On a different note, what is your accent, if you don't mind me asking. Thanks.
Haha! Glad I could help! I am using acrylics too, and it is true that it makes it difficult for the “creamy” texture… And for my accent: I am French! But I have been living in Asia for a good 20 years now…
Great! That’s the idea: we all learn something by studying the masters’ techniques! Even if it is a simple little thing, we can then apply it to our own art! Cheers!
Your color theory on these "7 easy steps" and explanations are unbelievable! I cannot express how much you have helped my mind's eye see the techniques and make them applicable to my work. I'm a huge Cezanne fan (Ever watched "Cezanne et Moi"? Excellent film...... I also cannot thank you enough! You deserve way more recognition! Please keep it up! Graciously yours ~ Bat
Aww, thanks Bat! These comments really make my day. It is sometimes difficult to explain the Color theory and how each painter applied and bent the rules to serve his/her art. But I try my best! Thanks for the encouragement!
Well, somehow, I am sure it wouldn’t be so different… keep your paint « creamy », and work slowly stroke by stroke, apply the shadows and the lights… I’m sure you can give it a try!
Water is fine for acrylic. There is this retardant to make it dry slower that you can use too. It makes for easier mixing of Color on the canvas itself.
Yes, my dear! First, thanks a lot for your nice words ! And yes: to celebrate Halloween, I will attempt to reproduce the portrait of « Vigo the Carpathian » (from Ghostbusters 2) LIVE on this channel at 8pm (Singapore), 12nn (GMT), 8am (EST)!!! We will be able to chat together and you’ll be able to ask any question as my brushes fill the canvas! I am also preparing new tutorials (recorded, not live) about Bob Ross, Modigliani and Matisse!!! Hope to see you!
Hi Sally! Yeah, I think so… the treatment of colors afterwards was different though… I do have 2 vidéos about VanGogh in my list, they refer to portraits but maybe you can check them out? The process should be similar for landscape
Thanks Akber ! Yes, I have been very busy lately but I am preparing a new series of paintings! A few are already written, I need to shoot them! So many things to do, so little time! 😋
Thanks a lot! Yeah, that will be for another chapter… perspective is limited on a still life, compared to , say, a landscape… but I Hope it is a good approximation !

Cezanne didn't paint like this. He only went over paint if he needed to as a choice to bring together the color harmony and composition.. Note when looking at many Cezanne's the canvas showing through in varied ways. So, on many of his works, you can see every brush stroke and essentially he hides nothing in the process. It is this kind of spontaneity that truly reveals the self in expression rather than some conceptualized version of the truth. And, his work is ALWAYS a balance of brush, color, motif and artistic intelligence. What you are doing is imitating Cezanne based on your pre conceived ideas. Actually something he abhorred. His quote, "If you copy me you do not love my work,"

Oh, thank you Emmanuel, but no: I am not an artist, nor a teacher! Just a hobbyist, with a passion for art history! 😋
