  • Shogun starring Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai and Cosmo Jarvis should serve as a template to creating exceptional stories and breathtaking cinematography.

Buntaro (Mariko’s husband) actually survives all of them including the Shogun Toranaga based on real characters. He is Samurai spirit incarnate. Bows to Toranaga and accepts death in the pier scene (and survives), shoots pass Mariko twice while drunk and hits the right post, tells Blackthorne boasting and story telling is for children. He decapitates his own father through tears. I find his character the one of the most complex and interesting in the whole series. You’re right, it’s a great show.

I loved this show. I’m very saddened that it ended and it’s one heck of limited series it leaves your craving for more. Lord Toranaga’s son had the funniest death I couldn’t stop laughing that poor man was very unfortunate

They are planning a season 2 now. Read my other comments here for more info.

I thought you might like to know. They are planning a season 2 now. If you can’t wait until then, Read the book. It’s very long, 1200 pages, but you get a lot more story out of it. Lots more character development. You get a better understanding of everyone. They Especially spend a lot more time on Marirko and John’s romance. They really ignore a lot of that in the newer version of the show.
Otherwise, I’d also recommend the first tv adaptation of Shogun from the 80s. Same story, but it focuses on different aspects of the book. They portray John in a more favorable light. Al’s spend a lot more time of John and Mariko’s relationship.
Anyways, again, they are planning a second two, despite the fact that they have run out of book material. However, the story is based on a real life story. So very likely they will draw the plot of season 2 from real life events and embellish them significantly to play up the drama. I am a little afraid that a second season will not live up the first..

Wait, Shogun is historical fiction so if they've run out of source material, then they're just going to make shit up.why risk ruining a perfect ending .Just, why?!

The 80s version is a different animal. First big change, (No subtitles whatsoever). So, like Blackthorn, you are 100% reliant on translators to understand what anyone is saying. It’s very immersive and it really makes you appreciate Marirko’s translations when she shows up. The 80s version also takes a little longer to get going. The new one wisely glosses over a lot of the beginning with John’s crew being in captivity. Sadly, most of the story is exclusively from John’s pov. So you loose some of the scenes with just the Japanese Characters. But you also gain some others scenes the new show cut out. Between the two versions of the show, you ‘almost’ get the entire book. Neither of them cover it all.@@kekelikosmos
