@@coldshot0175 That's how I do it when mic'ing up my 4x12 cab. I always play my guitars at full volume (on the guitar) for max clarity (power) of the pickups. When plugging directly into the EVO 4 to use plugins through my DAW, then I don't select any input (1 or 2), and I make sure it's not selected and gain for input 1 is turned all the way down. Thank you for doing a guitarist's perspective on this. So many links and forum posts for the podcast stuff. I just got the Evo 8 from your demo. I was wondering how it'd work with amp sims.
Smart gain is probably just taking an average of the amplitudes of the analog signal and adjusting accordingly. So many things labeled “smart” nowadays that are super simple. Cool feature though!
I'd love a smart device that can help you record music smart. For example you could use it to help match tone to the vocals and help smooth things out.
If all you are doing is recording guitar or bass you can get a USB guitar cable from Amazon for about $10. I use Reaper and it recognized it right away.
I agree. This Evo thing is way too complicated for my simple needs. I use a very old Line 6 Tone Port. It has an input for the guitar cable, a line out and a big volume control. That's all you need. It's USB powered so you just plug it into the computer and away you go. As simple as can be. I use Linux software to record my guitar work and that is a whole other topic...

Hey darrel since u are canadian can u please review some vintage traynors especially the yba 1 bassmaster. Traynor is a canadian amp manufacturer and they are actually quite cheap for their quality.
Think I now know what interface we need. Especially as daughter has just started college doing music ie singing, guitar, recording and performance. Think this would be spot on for her. Anyone else interested, I looked up UK price...just under £100.
my first guess would be no, from the looks of it, the feature takes a few seconds of audio and then sets the level, its doesn't continuously change the level you should set your levels to the loud end of the someone with wide dynamic range (so you don't clip the signal), and then either have them sing there quite parts louder or do them separately, honestly though unless they are actually trying to whisper into the mic, you shouldn't need to adjust it after you set it. they are singing after all.
Grease1991 I’ve thought about downloading WaveRider to see how it works for vocals. It’s a plug-in that supposedly automates level adjustments as the vocals are being recorded.
@@dbmabe With 24-bit audio, you should have plenty of dynamic range for vocals with any interface. Even with a 16 bit interface you should be OK. TBH the biggest influence on dynamic range is likely to be the microphone you use.
@@dbmabe Waverider is used after you record the vocal, it doesnt adjust the incoming mic signal from your interface to your daw, it adjusts the volume of said track from the track in your daw to the master bus, (or where ever your sending it but just for simplification,) I don't know how much of a beginner you are, but vocals are kinda weird, they look really dynamic after being recorded, but as long as your singer is realitively consistant you don't need lots of processing to keep it audible, some compression to even things out is the key in most situations, and don't forget about volume automation in your daw, thats also key for vocals, you can get away with not doing that with most other instruments but vocals are weird like that,
Thanks Darrell I'm shopping for one right now, I am kinda shocked at how the prices almost doubled in the last 3 months. I have a new computer and want to record but I'm new to the technology, can you recommend a daw also.
There really is no "best DAW," since most modern DAWs these day can do most things reasonably well. If you are loot for something simple, for beginners, Audacity honestly works great for simple stuff. MAGIX Music Maker is also really accessible. If you want more features but a bit higher of a learning curve, look into stuff like Cubase, REAPER, Logic, etc.
I'm pretty new to recording also, but I chose the 'Reaper' daw. It came highly recommended and you can try it for free indefinitely. If you do decide to buy it's only about $60. There are plenty of tutorial vids on UA-cam. It's worth checking out.
I've been using Ardour on Ubuntu Studio for the last few years, and for what I do it works quite well. It's free to download and use. I've maybe explored 10% of its features so far, and with every project I learn a little more and have figured out how to get more out of it. I wouldn't call it "intuitive", but it's not too hard to pick up. I've been using a Presonus Audiobox as my interface, which has worked quite well also. Like the Audient interface shown in this video, it connects via USB and runs on bus power, has two audio inputs and outputs, and provides phantom power for condenser mics, although for some reason that freaks the hell out of something on the software end and I've never figured out what, so I use a separate mic preamp for my condenser. It also has a MIDI in/out, although most new MIDI gear can connect via USB directly to your computer. It doesn't have a smart gain feature, but other than that it's been a champ. You may be able to find a used one for not too much money.
@@johnbode5528 I don't think any full-featured DAW could be considered "intuitive" because they are designed to meet the needs of experts and professionals. I tried Reaper on Linux but I found it just as complex and no better IMO. There's an assumed level of knowledge with most DAWs. For instance, understanding gain staging, signal flows and mixer strips. DAW user interfaces appear cluttered because they have to fit a lot of functionality in, and most DAWs try to optimize workflows for expert users. Of course there are some DAWs, like Garage Band, which are more intuitive, but they do this at the expense of functionality and workflow optimization: Garage Band is "DAW Lite" and is really designed as a gateway into Logic for more professional or expert users. Having said that, what it does it does well and is more than enough for a lot of users.
Loopback. If you are a streamer you can use in-game sounds in addition to your microphone to add comments as you go. Or, if you're a guitar player you can plug in your instrument (either directly or your amp/pedal/etc), play along a UA-cam backing track and record the combination to your computer as a stereo sound file without the need of a hardware mixer. Scarlett 2i2 does not have this function, you should buy a Scarlett 4i4 for loopback functionality.
Will this Evo 4 provide me with a mono output. I ask that because I currently had a Focusrite Solo 3rd Gen and when I go live on FB or just record in Quicktime the sound only comes out the left side. I understand that this happens due to the Focusrite Solo considers input 1 (XLR) to be the left channel and the other input (1/4 inch) to be the right channel. Now this would be an easy fix in post with any DAW because I can process the final output in Mono however because I go live and I dont have the option to fix in post. Therefor every time I go live I get stuck with the audio only coming out of the left side as I only have the mic in input 1 (XLR). So my question is would the Evo 4 input 1 (XLR) only record to the left side/channel during recoding or going live or will it record to both the left and right sides?
You had to have mac for a real time sound input, now probably every new motherboard has this, but can't find good experience software manager for a guitar rig.
Nice, but not anything new. Roland has this feature already for about 10 years now. My Octa-Capture has 8 inputs - two for guitar, but any input can be configured for 48 vdc plus a selectable onboard compressor. This saves so much time for when a band gets together to record a session. Plug in the mics, select Auto Sens for each mic in use or ALL if connected and let the band play together for a couple of minutes. This will auto set each input and put it right in the sweet spot. Drums, snares, trumpet, you name it - it gets set right there. A couple of minutes to double check each setting and you are ready to go.

@@dbmabe Waverider is used after you record the vocal, it doesnt adjust the incoming mic signal from your interface to your daw, it adjusts the volume of said track from the track in your daw to the master bus, (or where ever your sending it but just for simplification,)
I don't know how much of a beginner you are, but vocals are kinda weird, they look really dynamic after being recorded, but as long as your singer is realitively consistant you don't need lots of processing to keep it audible, some compression to even things out is the key in most situations, and don't forget about volume automation in your daw, thats also key for vocals, you can get away with not doing that with most other instruments but vocals are weird like that,
Looks good. I like simple stupid devices. I'm not into loads of switches and set up. If it's low latency too then all good.
Is there much difference in sound quality between the evo 4 and the id14?
Also check out Ardour and Mixbus
What would the benefit be over a scarlet 2i2?
Scarlett 2i2 does not have this function, you should buy a Scarlett 4i4 for loopback functionality.
ive been watching this interface ever since optimum tech did a review
Can phantom power be used on two microphones simultaneously?
My EVO4 interface started malfunctioning but no response after several complaint on Audient site.
but i already wasted like 500 in recording equipment :(
You did not waste, you only invested
If its high quality and works dont be sad
wow ASMR
Could you review cort x100? I have heard it is a great budget guitar.
Can use this live directly on a pioneer dj mixer?
audient id4 orignial not mk2 or evo 4 which is better thanks
EVO 4 is good audio interface.
You had to have mac for a real time sound input, now probably every new motherboard has this, but can't find good experience software manager for a guitar rig.
Awww heck man! I just bought myself a scarlette just a couple weeks back.. Now i have doubts.
@@MultiPetercool hey! good to know! thanks!
When does the singing start?
awesome.
Doesn't the spark amp come with recording software and act like an interface?
Why does Darrell heave that acoustic onto the roof? Can someone please help me out here?
Nice, but not anything new. Roland has this feature already for about 10 years now. My Octa-Capture has 8 inputs - two for guitar, but any input can be configured for 48 vdc plus a selectable onboard compressor. This saves so much time for when a band gets together to record a session. Plug in the mics, select Auto Sens for each mic in use or ALL if connected and let the band play together for a couple of minutes. This will auto set each input and put it right in the sweet spot. Drums, snares, trumpet, you name it - it gets set right there. A couple of minutes to double check each setting and you are ready to go.
