The EVO 4 was my first big boy interface after graduating from the UM2.
It's a powerful little box, and it'll likely be the mainstay in my revolving door of microphones.

I am considering Evo4 because it is a digital a/i. Mixers are mostly digital now, and once you use a digital mixer it’s hard to go back to analog. I think small a/i will be become digital very quickly, and Audient made a good decision to develop Evo line.
With Evo, I am expecting to be able to set the gain manually in DAW without having to reach for any knobs physically, and once gain is set for each track in a project, I don’t think I need to re-set the gain every time I record on a different track or if I closed the DAW and open again after using the interface for something else. Is that right? I think for Evo, the fact that it is a digital interface should be the biggest selling point. 😊
i also have a UM2 along with a podmic, not too impressed with it. would the evo be a big improvement?
@@grqfes definitely. I had the UM2 before, and tried it with a Podmic. The background hiss was horrible.
The EVO 4 does way better in delivering clear audio. But I mostly like it due to its price (cheaper in my country for some reason) and the 2 XLR inputs. If you just need one input, and want preamps where you can crank it up to max without worrying, you're better off with an M-Audio Air 192---just based on my experience.

i have to say, I bought it the moment i saw the reviews on internet. Its the most non-funky looking, clean black and modern looking interface with 2 XLR inputs in a budget. Do not regret the purchase a bit. Thanks the review audiohaze...

I've been using this interface for about a year. I still love it. Easy to use, great preamps, and a very intuitive setup. Plus, the mix/minus capabilities are fabulous.

I have the EVO 16, it replaced my scarlet and I'm definitely a fan of it. the "Auto gain" is good for getting in the ball park with drums, it does sit on the more cautious side though.
Better cautious than not though, I can see it actually being super helpful on kit though, good point :)

So frustrated.... I really wanted to use this for live performance where my iPad is my 'pedalboard' or multi-fx processor; however this audio interface DOES NOT support sending audio signal out to the mains, and also out to my ear phones (IEMs) at the same time. For many guitarists, this dual output at the same time is a MUST. ALL - multi-fx processors (Helix, Axe-Fx, etc.) support this.... and I'm not certain why the folks at Evo thought this was OK. There is a HUGE gap in the market for guitarists using their iPad as their pedalboard or multi-fx processor as far as super small /compact audio interfaces.

Thank you a lot for the great review! It’s not without its flaws, but what video ever is? Still, you triggered nerdy me once more. I feel like preamps still matter, even without tubes that otherwise would color the sound. Because, when I upgraded from my Steinberg UR22 Mk II to a Behringer UMC202HD and then to a MOTU M4, I heard a difference each time. That being said, it wasn’t a big difference. A better microphone is ridiculously influential. Way more than any preamp could ever be. But I heard a difference nonetheless. On the Behringer, it was a downgrade in tonal quality in exchange for a vastly better noise performance. On the MOTU it was an upgrade in sound and equal noise performance with a ridiculously good ADC.
But aside from that, we need to clarify a problem with the results in noise that you’ve shown. The noise that you’ve demonstrated, is ambiance noise. This is important to state, because the difference in noise came from the room, not the preamp. This is pretty much assured, because usually ambiance noise is much higher than self noise of the preamp. And the low end fuss sounded a lot like a vibration caused by something in the house.
And then there is the question: Which microphone did you use? A condenser microphone produces so much noise relative to the signal, that not many preamps can actually drown the noise floor of even an ultra low noise condenser microphone. And even on a dynamic microphone, it’s not the same thing for all of them. With the RE20 the noise floor at the same signal strength is much lower, because of its high output, compared to the SM7B.
You cannot really test noise performance with a microphone connected, because of that. But at the same time you cannot measure noise with no microphone connected, because with a microphone impedance of infinite, the noise a preamp creates is dramatically higher. Your solution here is soldering a resistor to a XLR plug with no cable. That resistor needs to have an impedance equal to the microphone in use. Either that, or you buy yourself a DMX termination plug. the letter is at least just 1db quieter than a 150 ohm resistor and thus pretty much identical to a Shure SM7B - but without any sound from the room. This is the only way to show preamp noise.
What mic is used in the test? Ricky claims to be using the SM7B for both, and though video is missing for the Scarlett, I believe him. The SM7B is definitely going to need enough boosting that you can hear the noise floor of a preamp in a quiet room. An excellent preamp has -130dB floor, both the EVO and Scarlett are worse than that, their specs say < -128dB EIN and -128dB EIN A rated respectively. The SM7B is maxed on the EVO which will raise the preamp's floor 58dB if the gain is perfectly clean, bringing the floor up to ~ -70dB. If the Scarlett is also maxed out, then its floor is being raised by 56dB to ~ -72dB. However, his voice level and the noise floors shown in the recordings combined with the claimed gains in post suggest to me that he's driving the Scarlett harder than the EVO. This might be unfairly favouring the EVO over the Scarlett if true.
The noise demonstrated on the Scarlett at least is more than ambient noise. Even on cheap laptop speakers I can hear that the Scarlett is introducing electronic noise into the signal - you can see a spike on the Scarlett's spectrum that my ear tells me is ~2430Hz. He also mentioned there's stuff happening in the low end so I took out my in-ear monitors and am hearing a steady tone at ~56Hz, about right for the two peaks at and below ~100Hz. Both recordings also have a similar amount of white sounding noise that I am certain was not audible in the room.
I guess, i didnt catch the fact of the mic being used in the dead of night when i was writing my comment. So lets ignore that from my comment, shall we?
But that being said, I stick by what i said about the noise, which was - as you kindly repeated, clearly audible. You can even clearly hear the modulation in frequency of whatever is running in the background. Also, on both recordings, you can see a steady decline in the frequency response from 10 hz all the way up to about 2 kHz on the EVO and 2.5 kHz on the Scarlett, with the difference explained by the slightly higher noise level. Yes, it seems obvious, that the scarlett is being driven harder. But actually, its the other way around. But thats neither here nor there. If you make yourselves the work of highpassing to about 2.5kHz, you will notice, that apart from the high frequency part of the machine running, that still sticks out, the Noise of the two recordings is pretty much identical. The RMS Noise difference - away from that bump from 2.5kHz downwards, that is the main difference, caused by the ambiance - is as close as 2-3dB between the two. How little the difference in SELF-Noise is, becomes apparent by the bump around 3500 Hz, which is easily visible on both frequency analys graphs, rising above the actual noise floor. In the end, the estimated difference in self noise between the two is about 2dB on these recordings.

Using the Audient ID4 MKII with a Rode Procaster, Audient really manufactures quality products, I love it ! Completed the setup with a dbx 286s, but the audio interface alone was sufficient.
It also drives my HD 600s when needed

My EVO 4 picked up my cell phone signal like crazy, just by being in the same room, otherwise its a great interface. I have not had this issue with Focusrite Solo's, or the Audient iD4 (my favourite desktop interface).

Thanks! I have both, and I plan to make to make a video on it, the main difference is the preamps used. The preamps in the iD series come from their console units, whereas the Evo has its own preamp design

As now I feel that its not adequate enough (specially in the self noise part) I am planing for an upgrade and was wondering what would you recommend for a mic (SM7B or RE20) and interface.

Did you plug your guitar/instrument to the instrument jack or just the normal ones on the back, I'm wondering can I record multiple instruments because it only has one dedicated instrument input.
This might be out of line a bit, but I want to know, do interfaces differ in the quality of their direct monitor feature? I'm a singer-songwriter so hearing myself properly through my iem's is important to me.
One question: with the only one knob, does that knob control all inputs uniformly or can you adjust the input gains separately?

I bought this together with the SM58. And unfortunately I’m having nothing but problems… Keep in mind I don’t know anything about audio… So first of all when listening through the Evo4 I hear crackling and popping, it’s quiet, but still very annoying. Secondly, It’s so damn quiet… I have gain set to max, and it’s still quiet, people on discord have to set me to 180% and just complain that they can’t hear me. Do I have to get a cloudlifter of something? I’m really confused to be honest…

Sorry, but your great instruments is what makes all the difference. Audio interfaces are not the big deal nowdays. Even cheap aliexpress interfaces can do the job very well.
How do the evo preamps compare to the vocaster?
I ditched the much more expensive iD22 for this. It sounds clean, is super easy to use, and has a tiny footprint on my podcasting desk. Love it so far after about three months.

I am looking into getting a scarlet solo. Would u recommend this over a scarlet? They’re similar prices and I like how the scarlet looks more, but would it hold me back quality wise vs the Evo 4? I’m gonna pair the interface with an Nt1 also

Always on my recommended list for anyone that’s after a budget interface, especially if they have high impedance headphones. But the single control dial was a deal breaker for me for keeping mine long term.
Aw really? I haven’t minded it over the last month, what was the drawback for you? Not being able to consistently monitor all the input levels maybe?
@@AudioHaze I like to have my interface either set to direct monitor or pc playback, not a fan of having it set in the middle. so just found it more Effort than a switch or smaller knob like the older Scarlett or ssl2. I actual chose an ssl2 over the Audient id14 due to the ssl having a direct monitor knob vs the Audient software monitoring. Tiny details I know, and wouldn’t stop me recommending the evo to anyone. We are about to start a podcast at my work and am probably going with an evo 8 for the interface for £120 in the uk it’s a crazy deal for a four mic interface with clean preamps.

Hi, I’ve bought this interface and in the windows settings I can only select 24 bit 44.1khz, in fact, if I select 48khz or higher in the audient software I get no audio, I’m using the beyerdynamic dt990 pro 250ohm, I need help
My ATR2100x-USB works better on USB, has more gain than through EVO4+XLR. I've decided to return the EVO 4 to the shop.

fpr me the downside of evo4 is when it coes top the noise on the JFAT idk if it just on my guitar but recording high gain on it introduces a a lot of noise on top of it. still manageable tho. The ease of use is always fantastic due to its UI evo control.

With the Shure SM7B mic did you have to use a cloudlifter when connected to the Audient Evo 4 audio interface? Or does the Evo 4 provide enough clean gain without using a cloudlifter? Thanks.

Auto gain is handy because setting gain level while you are playing something with two hands can be annoying. :) Also for vocal mic, I can’t reach the interface when the mic is on the mic stand, so auto gain is quite a handy feature even for ones who know how to set gain properly. :)
