One of the issues he runs into repeatedly preventing him from getting the “clean” result he wanted is pushing, throwing, or spinning the bucket with force. The pendulum typically works best being brought out a certain distance… and then just let go of. Or twist the string, bring it out a certain distance and then let go of it. When he’s pushing or throwing he’s adding some weird torque which is eventually “corrected” as the pendulum continues to swing but it makes those first couple of passes of paint lay in a slightly different pattern (or makes it splatter before it settles). You definitely can use throwing it as a technique but you have to be very in tune with the weights/directions/forces involved - at least for a clean geometric result - which is hard to do when you’re brand new to something.
You are totally right. he messed up the whole process by keep pushing the paint in every direction. One more thing that he didn't pay attention was the size of the hole that he make with the screw driver... he should have used a smaller one.
If he just let it go without pushing sideways, the pendulum would swing back and forth and paint almost straight lines. That's what happened on his first attempt, not very interesting aesthetically. To get some rotation and a curved trajectory, there needs to be an initial push to the side. Gravity alone cannot do it, as it's only makes the pendulum accelerate towards the lowest point.

if you want to try this on hard mode, have a look at "chaos pendulums" which is just a pendulum attached to another pendulum. To convert a paint pendulum into a paint chaos pendulum, you just need to add a weight in the middle of the string that's a bit heavier than the paint and tin. Just a little of 3rd grade physics would had help you a lot: - The weight doesn't matter. (Well, just have enough to tension the string...) - The force of which you launch it doesn't matter. - The speed of the pendulum is constant. - The path only depends on the length of the string, and how far from the center you let the bucket go. So just pick a string lenght, pick a place to start, and just let go. no need to apply force.
The caveat, your 3rd grade physics assumed a frictionless system in a vacuum with a non-liquid pendulum where, as you stated, the path and period are all about length. Real world, there are a lot of external forces acting to stop the pendulum’s movement, so more mass on the pendulum reduces the relative influence of those forces and keeps it going longer. But, you’re absolutely right, his biggest mistake was trying to throw the pendulum rather than just releasing it.
Speed of the launch toward the center doesn't help (it just acts as if you released it from higher up), but you can play with speed sideways, in the direction orbiting the center. This determines how circular the pattern is.
Note to add: On the contrary, mass is probably one of the most important factors especially in trying to keep a more controlled, localized environment. If the mass is increased, that allows for less chaos. Meaning that he wouldn’t have to pull the bucket back so far (x being decreased/consistent) and/or the initial velocity does not have to be so high. This also allows for a more continuous motion of the paint flowing out without as many splotches. The basic principle of momentum is p = mv where there’s not so much emphasis on constant velocity, rather the initial velocity (v = x/t) and the initial distance. As seen in the example video with the weight. There, the end product was more controlled. Because the main controlled/constant variable is the mass. At this point, the friction and other forces can truly be irrelevant in getting a great outcome. In other words, more mass = more momentum. Thank you for my Ted Talk…
I'm gonna be honest, I really like the messy attempts WAY MORE than any of the super clean ones. The black on white ones look like really cool ink drawings.
Once Jazza inevitably someday runs out of new ways to make art, he should make a series called SERIES 2 or Art - Revisited, where he revisits all these ways of Art and improves his skills with those mediums. (Love your vids btw, super inspiring)

BUT what would be fun is to supersize such a kit with gears from a machine or clock or even laser cut...id like to see that being done ;-) this was great to watch but spirograph for giants might be more precise for Jazza
One thing you're doing every time that may be making the results worse - poking the hole in the container through the bottom. This is going to push the metal inside, which is going to make it harder to get a nice laminar flow. And, as you figured out, a higher viscosity liquid will be more laminar.
If I was to ever do this, I would have to make a container with a remote controlled flap so I could control when the paint releases and stops😆, you need to do a crane version!
Ooooh! Sounds like he needs a collab with a science channel. For funsies. I’m sure he could figure it out on his own but it might take longer to get good at the robotics than he might like.

Does anyone else miss the days of there being a title card? Like where the Jazza avatar ran across the screen with the paint splats? Like I literally just miss having a fun intro card haha
I feel like either deforming the canvas and doing this before you mount it to a frame or using the marbly painting technique before hand could give really interesting results
From a non-art perspective, this reminds me of the Foucault Pendulums I've seen at some children's museums. They're basically really long pendulums that knock over pieces on the ground to mark time passing. Except the pendulums themselves aren't the things spinning - they're designed to the pendulum stays swinging the same direction, and the rotation of the earth itself moves the ground and the pieces into its path.
I do this on a smaller scale. I made a holder out of wood that wood fit disposable plastic cups. When I want to change colors, just change out cup. No worries or re doing string. Your piece turned out pretty cool
An enormous pendulum painting would be amazing! Hopefully you’ll be able to find a park instead and the painting could be semi permanent in a public place for people to enjoy when it’s done 😊
This is so nostalgic for me because this is the first video I've seen from draw with jazza for ages and I have been watching him since before he had 1 million subs Keep goin jazza Your great:)
A few tips: 1. You should probably punch the hole from inside the container. That way it deforms in a way that makes it easier for the paint to flow out. 2. The guy in the video did indeed put weight on the paint for a reason. You want to make the flow of the paint as stable as possible, which can be done by putting enough pressure on it, such that the maximum flow (which is limited by the hole size) can be achieved. Ideally this would be done via some pressurizing device and not just gravity. 3. The hole should not be too big, but not too small either. The right size depends on the viscosity and/or surface tension of the paint. 4. The longer the paint "falls" the more it accelerates. This means that the paint at the bottom falls faster which could make it bloopy. As a result, you want the distance between the container and the canvas to be relatively short.
I am really happy with this video because this is something I feel like I would be able to recreate myself (of course not 100% copy, just differently patterned painting made with same method), only need to get place ready and splurge a bit on paint. While I love watching all Jazza videos vast majority of things made in them require insane amount of talent/training/skill/effort, this one seems accesible to anyone, even people with 0 art skills and 2 left hands like me. Result is really good-looking, I would be happy hanging something like that in my house. I think it beats just having posters or printed painting-like things.

We tried this years ago when homeschooling our son. We did it outside with the paint bottle hanging from a tree branch. It didn't work so well, but we had one very fun, messy afternoon! :)
I can feel Jazza's frustration when he discovered that he just has to use the paint buckets without any mixes
I love how I'm over here with a giant pack of spirograph tools going "Yeah I'm just gonna stick to this smaller version :'D"
Love how you are humble and show your progression from " This looks cool, I wanna try it! " to " I'm still not getting it, but I'm going to keep trying! " to finally " Yes! Look at it! Look at my beautiful work! "
Love following you every step of the way, as always a pleasure
Just a little of 3rd grade physics would had help you a lot:
- The weight doesn't matter. (Well, just have enough to tension the string...)
- The force of which you launch it doesn't matter.
You take physics in the 3rd grade??
LOLL Jazza getting angry at paint is legit so funny what a mood I love how much energy this guy has
I'm gonna be honest, I really like the messy attempts WAY MORE than any of the super clean ones. The black on white ones look like really cool ink drawings.
The cameraman getting nervous with Jazza's risk taking, trying to be the voice of reason.😆
Watching this semi-tuned out when Jazza shouts "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND ART GARETH!"
Shook.
Same, brother.
Once Jazza inevitably someday runs out of new ways to make art, he should make a series called SERIES 2 or Art - Revisited, where he revisits all these ways of Art and improves his skills with those mediums. (Love your vids btw, super inspiring)

let's get guinness book of world records involved and go for the worlds biggest painting by pendulum swing!
People vote this up. Wanna see
That would be cool
Brilliant idea!
The purple on top added a certain amount of organic that makes me enjoy it more than most pendulum art personally
they remind me of Spirograph from the olden days, you can still buy the kit by the way. BUT what would be fun is to supersize such a kit with gears from a machine or clock or even laser cut...id like to see that being done ;-) this was great to watch but spirograph for giants might be more precise for Jazza
Wow that would be cool!
What I would've done is: after the black spiral foundation is finished, rearrange the order of the canvasses for the next layer
I can't believe you didn't try poring all the different leftovers paint in one bucket like an pour and let it swing making a multi color lines
I love Jazza crouching on the edge of the canvas like a goblin in the wide shots 😂
One thing you're doing every time that may be making the results worse - poking the hole in the container through the bottom. This is going to push the metal inside, which is going to make it harder to get a nice laminar flow. And, as you figured out, a higher viscosity liquid will be more laminar.
Jazza: I’m such a dissapointment
Also Jazza: proceeds to change UA-cam with art
If I was to ever do this, I would have to make a container with a remote controlled flap so I could control when the paint releases and stops😆, you need to do a crane version!
Ooooh! Sounds like he needs a collab with a science channel. For funsies. I’m sure he could figure it out on his own but it might take longer to get good at the robotics than he might like.
That last one looks amazing! There was question of it being effed up, but I feel like the orderly black paint and the chaotic lavender paint contrast so well

Please do a giant one!!!
Imagine all the decorative pieces in his house and then imagine being able to tell somebody that you made all that I love artists and all the creativity that goes into such work
I like how he was wiping the paint off the wall and saying sorry then a few minutes later he fully destroyed the place.🎨
I'm seeing this as a giant messy version of those spirographs we all had as kids and tbh I'm here for it!

I love and have watched nearly everyone one of your videos, but this may be my favorite
This is pure Jazza ADHD energy and I LOVE it
Jazza: Now that I’m a master of the medium…
Sam: (chuckles)
Jazza: So you have chosen…
DEATH
Jazza took "Art is messy" in a whole another level lol.
I think the final piece says a lot. The black is the perfect result you were looking for while the purple represents the difficulty of achieving that perfection.
This is the chaos I needed first thing in the morning.
Agreed
💯💯 Nothing better than Jazza reverting to the "I'm an adult" persona
Same
I’m always amazed by Jazza’s creative skills
@Don't Read My Profile Photo ok, I wont...
The banter between Jazza and Gareth is just spectacular!! 🤣😂🤣
I can't even begin to describe how much I love this chaotic man and his equally chaotic channel.
Jazza thinks winking at us makes it creepy, he's adorable. I don't think anyone would find him creepy even if he tried, he's such a cinnomon roll.
havent watched draw with jazza in years! God it was such a throwback the last time i watched is when he was building his studio and how big of a deal it was. Hope your doing well! Cheers!
You know it's fun when you come out of the project a total mess. Jazza even had paint in his beard.
Jazza: "Well, it's been a journey."
[paint on forehead, panting]
Me: I can see that.
The result is so cool!
THE WAY YOU CAUGHT THE PAINT CAN MID AIR HAHAHAHHA
this video was the perfect amount of chaos i needed today 😂😂😂😂
Does anyone else miss the days of there being a title card? Like where the Jazza avatar ran across the screen with the paint splats? Like I literally just miss having a fun intro card haha
Jazza is such a freaking mood
“I wanna be good at this quicker!” Literally every artist when they explore a new medium, don’t lie-
I would love to see you do the worlds largest pendulum spin!
An enormous pendulum painting would be amazing! Hopefully you’ll be able to find a park instead and the painting could be semi permanent in a public place for people to enjoy when it’s done 😊
This is so nostalgic for me because this is the first video I've seen from draw with jazza for ages and I have been watching him since before he had 1 million subs
Keep goin jazza
Your great:)
A few tips:
Jazza, your videos re a huge inspiration to me as I work on my own! Thank you!!
Hey Jazza! Been a fan for a while! Thanks for the feature, i have been wanting to do "the worlds largest pendulum painting" event for a while now. Lets collab and make this happen!
9:50 the way you captured the spinning paint pot in the bucket 😂😂😂 you’re a madman, honestly.
I would be down for the giant-scale version....
You’ve really made me rethink wanting to try this art form out. I know it’s about having fun first, but waiting till you’re halfway into making these is kinda frustrating. Fail,to plan is like planning to fail.
The sad thing is, that first painting Jazza threw away is like 90% of modern art that sells for millions and millions of $$ xD
It's almost like the modern art market is a tax-free way for rich people to store wealth
@@Chrnan6710 it is

Just say it’s symbolism for society or something and boom you got money
to be fair there is a lot of nepotism involved in that as well
