I love it! Like we're just chatting. I'm at MD Anderson, a big cancer hospital in Houston, TX, with my dad. These long videos are helping the time pass. And keeping my mind off things. Thank you ❤
Hospitals sell them *without* the knowledge of the mothers and they make a K I LLING off of it too. And lots of them also won't allow the moms to take them.
Horrifying. In the US, there are still states in which women are subjected to pelvic exams by medical students when they are under anesthesia for surgery because they unwittingly “consent” in all the pages of legal forms you are required to sign before surgery. So, if you went under for surgery, you would have no idea why you suddenly have pelvic pain or possibly an infection. If you didn’t have a reaction, you wouldn’t even know what they did to you. In any other context, strangers molesting an unconscious person would be assault.
@@anniinaxh it looks like the laws may be changing to a federal mandate, but as of April this year- 6 months ago - the only Federal guidelines state that hospitals may lose eligibility for Medicare/Medicaid funding. 🙄I know RBK had a video where she talked about a couple years ago, but her recent controversy makes me hesitant to recommend it. This reminds me of that one woman who donated her body to "science" after her death, only for her body to be used in a military blast test :( Honestly, I wouldn't be super opposed to using things like stem cells in skincare, or even placentas, but taking somebody's tissues that they believe they're donating to help people, only for a company to profit off of it, is super messed up. It's basically like donating to a fake charity, but worse, because it's your body and not just money
Yessss I was thinking about this one too. So messed up. I mean I don’t have any use for my body after I’m dead but I wouldn’t want my family to find out about something like that. I’d rather just be cremated.
In Sweden the placenta is checked to see it's healthy (for statistic and research reasons). If it is, the placenta membrane is sent to the hospital specialising in eye surgery (used for cemical burns on the cornea) and the leftover gets incinerated.
Howcome we are not told that when we are in the hospital giving birth? I was just now sitting here thinking about what happens to our placentas because we don't sign any forms regarding these things in Sweden. But fun to know it gets used in a good way👍🏽😀
I would have no problem with my body parts being used for medical research, or to genuinely help people medically. However, I would absolutely not want my parts used to be rubbed on some vain rich persons face.

£5000 a year is not a lot in the NHS either. We don't even need financial sign off for new drugs if the cost is less than £5000 a year. Yes the NHS is struggling and no one would be upset with an extra £5000 but it is ludicrous to me that they wanted to risk their reputation and betray patients confidence for something that low let alone the ethical considerations that should be the top priority at all times.
2:11 "So like all new mothers, Donna had no use for her placenta after birth." I guess no one's told James about eating the placenta or using it for artwork or jewelry 😂
I like this new background! It's very on brand for you! As for today's topic, it is disturbing as hell. I'd also bet there's a lot more of that stuff going on than we know. Im a "professional patient" as I like to call myself, as it sounds cooler than born in a broken body that needs a lot of attention. I've had four surgeries since june, but thankfully just had my last one five days ago. I know most of my closest hospitals pretty well, and those in my country's capitol. I dont know if any of this has happened here in Norway where Im from, but I do know that placentas are highly sought after for so many reasons. Will have to ask my friends with kids if they had to sign stuff about their placentas when they gave birth. Im childfree for obvious reasons. Your videos, as well as your brother's videos are amazing and I love to watch you guys! Im also a twin by the way, so go twin power!!
Do customers know that their cosmetics contain human tissue? When I was at a major retail store's make up counter they had a product that was boasting a certain ingredient. I asked the salesperson how was that ingredient sourced. She didn't know. But do you know that ingredient is from placenta? You dont know if it is human or animal sourced? She said that it must be (it has to be) a synthetic (because that would be gross). But you're not sure that or what it is. Not even the sales people know what's in their products
I'd assume if they actually manage to get actual placenta, not synthetic, the would advertise it on the product? Don’t know if they would mention if it was human or animal though.
I was so triggered through this video 😅 I work in Plant science so I recognized Sigma Aldrich. Each time you said "research", I shouted "but that is research!" 🤣 Research is so extensive and if the company itself disclosed that they profit from products extracted from the placenta, those could be used in so many different research fields, including beauty. I don't think is possible to track each placenta through the purification processes. What is possible is to be more specific into the many possible uses that the products from people's placenta could have. Last but not least, donors SHOULD be told that the hospital and the company who gets the placenta will profit from it. Donors probably thought that the whole placenta would be directly given to a doctor that happens to do medical research. Shame on the hospital and Sigma for exploiting people's ignorance.
Just came back from work, perfect timing and thanks for not shoving the microphone to your face like other UA-cam's do, that thing annoys me. By the way love the new setup and enjoyed the chat relaxed chatty vibe🥰
This is a *HUGE* violation of informed consent. Informed consent is called such for a reason! People need to know exactly what is happening to them or exactly where their tissues are going!
Everyone has their own beliefs, so no disrespect for any differences here, but I really struggle to see using human tissue in commercial products being a good thing. Feels like some really dark things could be happening to acquire the ingredients. For medical research, I can respect it. But for products? Let’s go plant based and ethically sourced products.
I’m still more comfortable with placentas being used for cosmetics than being eaten by new mothers in the misguided idea that they provide protective benefits. 🤢
You can apparently get your placental and cord cells frozen for your child encase they develop illnesses when they're older that their own stem cells could help cure. Wonder how upfront the NHS staff were about this option or if they led women to believe their 2 choices were'research' or disposal 🤔
I was scheduled to have pregnancy material removed at Poole Hospital (I was unable to in the end due to the nurses strike). They made a point to tell me at the remains would be burnt at a ‘funeral’ ceremony you could attend and that the ashes would be scattered in the memorial garden. I spoke one of nurses at another hospital where I am doing related treatment and she said they don’t do that there, so maybe they are now being extra sensitive due to this scandal.
James i love this series you do, its a really important area to explore and i love listening to you taking us on this journey! We appreciate all your research and hard work into these topics :)
The cynic in me worries about what happens when these companies, or the companies they source products from, start cost cutting. There were multiple massive scandals in the US and Europe related to tainted blood and human tissue products, because screening and safety proceedure were skipped in the name of saving money. See also, the Mastromarino/Alistair Cooke, and the Factor VIII scandals.
This is also why c sections are so common. (Hospitals make MORE selling placentas when they havent passed through the birth canal.) Besides just making more money overrall from the surgery itself because MORE money can be charged to insurance! I have had *2* unnecessary c sections. In the 1st they told me my son was "stuck." That hospital had an 85% c section rate. In my 2nd, which was almost 10 years later, they told me my "old incision could open back up" and they didn't want me laboring for too long. I hadnt even been in labor for 12 hours at that point! I was LI ED to in both instances. Also: epidurals close off a third of the cervix which makes pushing harder. It also eventually puts baby in distress which just leads to an eventual c section.
Okay the second one was not a lie. If you have a C-section, it's almost guaranteed that any births after that will have to be a C-section as well because the scar tissue is at risk to rip. That skin isn't as strong as the other skin and absolutely can RIP open, dangerous for mom and baby.
@marieseaman No. VBAC is definitely achievable for the vast majority of 2nd (or however) time mothers. It's highly dependent on scar tissue. After 10 *years* there's no way my incision would open back up after all that time. Besides them giving me pitocin when I was already at a 7 (which you're not supposed to do because it will stall your labor and it did.)
That's crazy! Here in Norway the C-section rate is about 15%, and VBACs are standard, because they want to avoid unnecessary C-sections as much as possible, so there has to be a good medical reason (which is why about 2/3 of them are emergency C-sections). Even though they would also be granted more money for C-sections vs vaginal births. My C-section was very much an emergency, my daughter was minutes away from dying, so they had to put me under ASAP. My placenta was sent to a lab to see if they could find out what went wrong, I assume it was destroyed after that.
@CarolineCarnivorous Yup! That should be U.S. standard as well but they're all about the money and will lie to you to get it. They told me I needed to do an epidural with my 2nd "just in case" I needed one because they "wouldn't have time to numb me if I needed a c section" More lies!!! They injected me right before they made me move onto the OR table and now I have *permanent* back pain!!!
AH, ngl this is why you gotta read over consent forms fully and if you can get copies! Its almost a standered thing here in the USA since we have such up and down healthcare.
my issue isnt that the placenta is being used in skincare. theres enough research for me to understand that egf, placenta, stem cells, all have a place in regenerative cosmetics. my issue is deceiving mothers on where its going and not compensating them when theyre about to turn around and sell their body parts. We get paid for blood, we should be paid for our placenta bc its the ingredient that allows these companies to charge 500 dollars for a jar of cream
I don't know how I feel about this, I've had 4 kids and the after birth would otherwise be burnt, if it could help buy some extra equipment for the hospital I'd be happy to sign a consent form, but I suppose consent is the word. Great video. ❤
I’ve heard a few podcasts that covered organ farming and body donation gone wrong in the US. Families would be shocked if they knew what could be done to body parts once you’ve signed the paperwork (medical science is a term used very loosely). I’ve had 3 kids, here in the uk and my placentas were just whisked away🤷♀️ i wasn’t asked to sign anything, i just assumed they were incinerated, makes me wonder now 🤔
I wouldn't personally care all that much what my placenta was used for if I wasn't keeping it for any reason, but I get that someone would be upset if they weren't fully informed about what exactly I was agreeing to and feeling deceived
Okay…. Call me crazy, but I think hospitals selling placenta is actually a good idea - it just needs to be executed differently…because public hospitals are desperately underfunded… and the effect of that is not being able to care for their patients adequately. So first of all, the hospital should have to pay the mother for her placenta. If she has no use for it, why wouldn’t she sell it for $50? The hospital can then sell it to a company that can use it but they need to learn how to negotiate a fair price because £5000/year is much less than the value. The company can’t get the “product” elsewhere but the hospital doesn’t have the resources to sell it as a final product, just as the mother doesn’t have a use for it, but it has value. Then the hospital has a stream of income that can help it employ more staff, get better/more equipment and everyone involved gets something out of it.
IMO, as long as research purposes aren't being deprived for the more lucrative cosmetic purposes, honestly if the choice is between financial benefit to the health care institutions or disposal as biological waste I don't really see a problem. Once you sign something away really you give up control over what is ultimately done with it.
Also this story reminds me of when a guy found out his moms body, which was donated for medical research was sold to the US military for target practice
Your voice is... so pleasent to listen to I would love to listen like +1 hour true crime podcast with your voice haha sorry if this sounds weird but yeah I love true crime and your voice is just so pleasent to listen to.
This reminds me of da story: Somewhere in South Americas Jungle .. expats would travel there as they were promised a job. 👀 They would b brought with a car to a location and told that because they can not drive any further they will need to take a walk trough the jungle .. And that's where they disappeared. Turns out there's was a luxury skin care brand that was using "human fats" to make anti aging face creams .. As of course human fat are absorbed better than any plant or animal fat .. 😶 I heard this story 20 years ago ago .. and apparently their business did run successfully for 15 years.
Not me trying to name all the products in your background... Ooh you've got the new Dr Jart lip balm in the shape of a bear! is it any good? its so cute
This is disturbing. First time hearing about this issue. Im stunned. Just cant wrap my head around using this is skin care. Ewwwwh. Id like to know what companies use this & in what products. Clearly, if they didnt feel it was sketchy they'd told us straight out. Thank you! Another great video!
In Romania the authorities discovered last year that in a hospital there was a group of doctors and nurses that worked taking heart stimulators from dead ppl and selling and putting them in other alive ppl, some of which didn't even need them... So this placenta stuff is much more ok than what can actually be done by the doctors 😂😂😂😂😂
I don't find it weird or wrong other than, where's my cut? Where's my money? If it's not going to medica research but to cosmetic profits, I want a cut of that profit
Eating placenta is a thing in Chinese medicine. It was for people to look younger or something. I mean, idk how people back then knew about potential stem cells in them. These can’t be replicated anywhere else. It’s all gross and fascinating at the same time 😅❤
@@BarbaraT. Yes, human hair is used to make L-cysteine, an amino acid that's added to some foods as a preservative and dough conditioner. L-cysteine can be synthesized in labs, but human hair is a cheaper alternative. The hair is often collected from barbershops and salons in China.

Here for the tore up argil sweater.🖤
Your dog at the end!❤
no bc imagine going through a gruelling 9 months of pregnancy AND giving birth to have your inside made into a serum 🤦🏻♀️
Oh my gosh I thought that was illegal to use human tissue in anything not approved for health and with a doctor’s recommendation
Not me explaining to my cat that the doggie is in England 😭 A place where you think this sort of thing wouldn't happen.
Using human tissue for skincare just feels like a form of cannibalism to me.
I had to read the title 3 times because my brain didn’t wanna make sense of it 😭😭💀💀💀
IMO, as long as research purposes aren't being deprived for the more lucrative cosmetic purposes, honestly if the choice is between financial benefit to the health care institutions or disposal as biological waste I don't really see a problem. Once you sign something away really you give up control over what is ultimately done with it.
Stem cells are also taken from it
Also this story reminds me of when a guy found out his moms body, which was donated for medical research was sold to the US military for target practice
Your voice is... so pleasent to listen to I would love to listen like +1 hour true crime podcast with your voice haha sorry if this sounds weird but yeah I love true crime and your voice is just so pleasent to listen to.
I love watching his and Robert's videos in the evening to unwind before bed. They really do have relaxing voices 🤣
@@kristinabava8718yea Robert is great as well I actually discovered him first and later I discovered James.
This brings the question, at least in the US, if a skincare brand is labeled vegan, does that mean only not from animals, or does that include humans?
This reminds me of da story:
Somewhere in South Americas Jungle .. expats would travel there as they were promised a job. 👀
They would b brought with a car to a location and told that because they can not drive any further they will need to take a walk trough the jungle ..
And that's where they disappeared.
Turns out there's was a luxury skin care brand that was using "human fats" to make anti aging face creams ..
As of course human fat are absorbed better than any plant or animal fat .. 😶
I heard this story 20 years ago ago .. and apparently their business did run successfully for 15 years.
Do you link your sources? I’d love to learn more about this.
Oh yes I usually do but forgot this time! Will update when I get back in my studio ☺️🙏🏼
Not me trying to name all the products in your background... Ooh you've got the new Dr Jart lip balm in the shape of a bear! is it any good? its so cute
It is! Nahhh tbh it’s extremely average!
@@JamesWelsh oh good! thank you for saving me ££ lol
Nah, £5000 is not a lot for a hospital, even an NHS one!
Thanks but I'll pass on using placenta on my skin. Growing old really isn't that bad.
If you don't want it i don't see the issue tbh
I found that glow recipe watermelon hyloronic acid he raves about on the walmart website..it was reasonably priced. Is it the real thing?
Do you have any thoughts on the Genabelle vita PDRN serum?
It’s all gross and fascinating at the same time 😅❤
Nice setup🎉 look I am all for trying to look the best I can but this is just nasty and sneaky
If its organic its good
Not necessarily
JK
Her issue is she didn't get the money simple as
What happened to your sweater? It's all torn up XD

Well, apparently, human hair is a food preservative, so nothing surprises me....🤮
What? Really? Tell us more!! 🤮
@@BarbaraT. Yes, human hair is used to make L-cysteine, an amino acid that's added to some foods as a preservative and dough conditioner. L-cysteine can be synthesized in labs, but human hair is a cheaper alternative. The hair is often collected from barbershops and salons in China.
@@izzaanimates9041 omg no way how do we find out which food uses hair or L cysteine or not?
@@theamalkhalid Well it’s usually used in fluffy dough, so like sub breads and burger buns and pizza crust. If you have enough money and resources, you should purchase breads from local bakeries where they use fresh dough if you don’t want to consume human hair.
Jamessss we love you and Robert your the best 💝😍😘🥰🏳️🌈xxxx
