My favourite thing was seeing Tati have JLos makeup artist on her channel and him saying her glow is from spray sunscreen 💀 really ruined her plans for claiming the glow came from anything else
Really Ellen stayed indoors and had a TV filter on her face and Brad just drank. They can pull him together for the red carpet but when you see him on the street the man did not take care of his skin. But of course why when men supposedly age like fine wine 🙄. All it took was good sunscreen and Vitamin A cream. But being his age we didn’t grow up with spf! But as soon as it came out I used it every day in my moisturizer starting in late high school and you can see the difference in my friends who didn’t. I was just the one reading all the beauty magazines, lol. Alcohol is really bad for skin and I’m talking the kind you drink. But personality also plays a huge part, at least for some people. Attractiveness really affects your brain when someone is rude, hateful, self obsessed, etc. I’ve dated men I had zero attraction to until I got to know them, and boy, a great sense of humor and kindness goes such a long way!
Exactly what I said! They both look awful! I'm 44 and grew up with the whole Brad Pitt being a "sex symbol." Back then I didn't think he was "unattractive" but definitely not my type. Not only does he look terrible in terms of physical appearance but the more u learn about certain "celebrities" and their personalities, habits etc. the uglier they look on the outside to u. Alcoholism is a major turn off for me.
@@phoenixgirl70I could be wrong but I'm sure Brad has had a little nip/tuck to freshen up more recently. Unless of course it was filters on his photos
As someone who has worked with skin care for years I honestly don’t think they should have even marketed it as affordable. Even the cheapest but effective drums are not cheap. And cheap brands don’t work as well as luxury brands. I have been using luxury brands since my 20’s and they have been working for 23 years. Everyone always mentions my skin in photos on social media. But it’s due to me now buying luxury brands that are effective at discount stores like TJ Maxx and Ross as well as Sonic changing brush and 5011 steps including at home facials, at home peels, gua cha scraping, deep exfoliation, hydrating masks, aging oils to my daily moisturizer as well as slugging. But I can’t use viral stuff and get results. I got a shiseido bio-lifting serum at Ross for $46, now have the Perricone DEI crease serum from there at $19.99, a global beauty care anti wrinkle cream with peptides and oils. I also got a Pacifica hyaluronic acid and rose serum for $5 which I put after toner before other serums. But I’m good at finding higher quality products discounted and keeping up with my regimen. Doing the steps is crucial to seeing results. Too often people want to just add one thing or barely do anything extra and want the same results. But you need to exfoliate daily like I do followed by washing, glycolic toner which I forgot earlier from ordinary and two serums, moisturizer with oil, and slugging. And I have one $350 leave on mask that is expensive but amazing for boosting up like I use $360 cream daily. But the biggest toll here is my Sonic cleansing brush. That’s the secret weapon!
A couple months ago (or whenever she broke up with Ben) she posted a selfie from her bathroom and you could clearly see the Augustinus Bader cream and other expensive skincare. I knew she didn’t actually use her own stuff but that was the proof.
TBF, I used to get free La Mer when I nannied for a woman in the beauty industry who got it free. It is not better, or even half as good, as many Korean brands at a fraction of the price. Olive Oil would probably be just about the same. It's just a thick cream, similar to Farmacy Honey Halo.
@@brigittelee9730ha! I remember seeing this on some show about products that celebs use that are really expensive. I’ve always associated it with her bc of that vh1 (I think) show. I used my Sephora points to get a sampler thing of it a few years back and it was fine, I guess? Around the same time I got a sample of biossance of their omega repair cream and the biossance is what stood out to me, I got more samples of it every time I saw them and now I’ve got a biggun. That’s how I rate products, is, do I remember it however many months later after trying a sample? I can’t even remember what la mer smelled like
People who experience massive fame tend to stop developing mentally at the peak of that. That’s J Lo’s problem. She’s still stuck in 2003. Celebrity culture is so much different now and she can’t adapt. When she tries to be “real”, it feels very inauthentic and forced. People don’t like that. And it’s clear J Lo wasn’t the driving force behind this skin care line. It’s something she slapped her name on. Also, her reputation for being snotty and rude to service people doesn’t help.
i agree, for someone who is 51, she does come off a bit immature and lacking the type of wisdom and intellectualism you would expect at that age. and part of that is how surface level and appearance-obsessed she and her brand still is.
In terms of developing a product, she followed a kardashian strategy; put your name on it and it will make money. That family has launched so many B and C level products and they made money quickly. Please note, i know that Skims and Good American jeans are successful endeavors but there are so many other products were quick money schemes. J Lo Glow fell into the latter.
Jennifer Lopez actually got her start on In Living Color, a show produced by Keenan Ivory Wayans which gave us the Wayans family, Tommy Davidson, David Allan Grier, and Jim Carey. She was the head "fly girl" (fly girls are what the dancers were called). She now refuses to acknowledge that was the start of her career, or what the Wayans did for her and has banned journalists from asking her about it. In contrast, Jim Carey has always credited the Wayans for hiring him, when no white director or producer did. It's things like this that really bother people about her.
The Wayans family didn't even want to hire her. Their exact words were, "she's chubby and corny." It was only because of Rosie Perez fighting for her hiring that she was hired.
With so many celebrity brands flooding the market, JLo’s skincare line felt especially inauthentic, like just another cash grab, especially given the steep price point. And now after her self-indulgent film and the recent revelations about her past with Puff D, her reputation seems tarnished beyond repair.
What revelations? Is it just people remembering that they dated? But yeah, her timing really sank her. Maybe if she focused more squarely on the 'getting older' demographic, made the packaging feel actual luxury? and realized people can spot photoshop pretty well now. that definitely would've made it more believable as good skincare
Yeah, had she launched her brand during her ‘jenny from the block’ era, it wold have been a phenomenal launch… it felt like ‘joining the celebrity brand trend’ when she launched jlo beauty
It would’ve been flying off the shelves back then. I didn’t even like her back then, but as a college girl in the early 2000s, I would’ve sold a kidney for it.
As an esthetician, the brands I recommend to clients are those that involve dermatologists and independent research. Not brands made by someone with no formal skincare knowledge or training. Using skincare regularly does not make you a dermatologist or cosmetic chemist or esthetician
Hey! I need help with sunscreen I’m a Fitzpatrick type 1 but it irritates my skin/breaks me out usually and I never know when to apply it, I hate the idea of having just spf as it’s own step. I’m currently using a la roche posay spf primer but it looks bad under certain makeup and it’s old as hell. Other than that I like it, but it’s several years old and I need to replace it. Do you have any recs? I think I’m combination skin, I’m very dry around my nose and on my nose, but sometimes I’m oily (I suspect this is product related bc I tend to be dry) I just turned 40 fwiw
These celebrities use cosmetic chemists to create them. Like when they make perfumes, it’s a team of people making it - and people designing the packaging. But of course the celebrities have an input but they’re not the ones physically making the product either. Kim Kardashian’s skincare looks good regarding ingredients etc. but these things are just so expensive because it’s a brand.
@@rainbomg Hey! I know you didn’t ask me lol but I’ve been an esti for close to 10 years now. For the last four or so years I’ve been obsessed with Image Skincare at home and in my treatment room. Try their daily prevention ultra defense with SPF 50. I have combination skin too, but tend to get more oily around my nose. Mix a small amount into your hand, and then blend it into your skin. A little goes a long way and it has a pretty decent shelf life! I hope this helps 🫶🏼
@@rainbomg hey! I like PCA hydrator plus SPF. You could use it as a morning moisturizer/SPF. Same with the cerave AM moisturizer if you’re looking for a budget friendly option. Cerave also just released a 50 SPF version which would be preferable since you’re a fitz 1. Just be sure to re-apply regularly and wear it even when you’re inside on a cloudy day
It's also worth remembering that she dated P Diddy for 1.5yrs, and during this time they were involved in a shooting where it's alleged, she had the gun in her bag. Add in the fact that it's a widely known music industry "secret" that she didn't write or sing any of her songs, and I don't know how anyone is still supporting her.
It’s got to be really difficult to have once been at the pinnacle of fame and influence in the early 2000s only to now be someone ppl don’t care about at all
Scott Barnes had already said on multiple occasions that he achieved the JLo Glow with Neutrogena aerosol sunscreen. Plus, he sells a shimmering body cream - when JLo released her brand, my first thought was: "...Why didn't Scott's brand and JLo just collaborated with eachother?"
I mean, nobody is talking about how her reputation for being a terrible person is the only relevant thing about her these days. And that reputation can't be good for a brand that's already struggling with being an overpriced, boring, vanity project. 😬
@@kissarococo2459 That change in expectations has probably hit divas like her the hardest. Because even when their career is basically over a diva used to be able to still feel important and better than everyone else through being mysterious and untouchable. Now people want humility and vulnerability.

@@Wee162Exactly. I know there's hate with their history and their stances with so many stuff the kids are into nowadays but as James has featured in his previous vid, they own everything. She instead decided to white label somewhere else. 😅
I think it’s WILD she denies getting Botox when she did an interview with people magazine in the 2000’s stating she started getting small doses of Botox since she was in her early 20’s 👀
Also, Botox is not that serious. I wouldn’t judge, especially since it’s cheap now. I don’t know any celebrity with a beauty line that hasn’t had something done.
Funnily enough about 15 years ago she did an interview and was asked what skincare she used and she said Dr Haushka Rose Day Cream. You can bet i bought it immediately and it was lovely, rich and glowy. So...yeah..no olive oil.
@@originofsky my friend won a box of La Mer skin products and raved about them, and did look great while she used them, but when they finished and she went to go buy them, she discovered how expensive it was and soon gave them up😂😂
19:34 .....i thought she thought aging was beautiful? Why would she want to remove 10yrs off her face if she thinks aging is beautiful and shouldn't be fought? This is why i don't like it when brands claim to be for aging, when all of their products are marketed as anti aging. It makes no sense to me
Finally someone talking about her! I had zero interest in the products she made. Proof that just because you’re famous it doesn’t mean you need your own beauty brand. Choose something you’re passionate about and pour your heart into it. Your fans deserve that and so do you. ❤
All you mean-girls stick together like old dried-up gum stuck to the underside of someone's shoe - how very charming - you all seem to have the IQ's of same lol!
She used to wear "China Rain" Perfume Oil all through the 90s. (Which was gorgeous!) Clean / fresh / perfect. So J-Lo had it Copied - for her Cewebwity Fragrance (That's what "Glow" EDP is!) & she basically put them Out of Business. "Glow" has a plastic-y note That is literally superglue The new bottles have more of it now - as the formula has got cheaper & cheaper every other Year & so unless you have a Vintage bottle it's not wearable. My Aunt wore China Rain Perfume Oil - the Original & it was gorgeous + had beautiful rounded notes (but Glow was always a cheaper copy) & it didn't smell bad then - but is terrible now Shame she made the Real Thing disappear though - millions loved China Rain in the 90s🙏🏼🇬🇧
Honestly, it’s still good. I hate the expression ”clean girl”, but Glow really is while interestingly manages to be sensual too (something I don’t think a lot of these ”just showered” perfumes manage to).
@@Persefone94Sandalwood note. I described Glow as a glorified Dove soap scent with a little old-school Nivea sunscreen thrown in. The sandalwood note just gives it the slight skin like skank.
@@Persefone94 yeah mate I agree. It's really not bad. A little powdery for my preference, but it's really not a bad perfume at all. Clean, fresh, sweet, and I still love Jasmin undertones. I lived my best teen life, wearing that for years. Special shout out for Believe by Britney too- I still wear that sometimes if I can find a bottle somewhere in bodycare 😂
I personally love her ‘Promise’ sometimes the celebrity perfumes are better than the other ones. I remember the Paris Hilton one being my favorite in highschool and the Britney Spears fantasy one lol
2 things - 1) I like her Glow fragrance. It's not sweet, it's clean and warm smelling, with a subtle hint of musk. 2) What I don't get, is that these celebrities were using different skincare when they became known for having beautiful skin. THEN they developed skincare lines. But their own brand is not how they achieved their skin, something else was responsible for that. I want to know what they used to use instead of them making their own lines.
She knocked off her perfume Glow from a small indie company, the scent was called China Rain. The company was called Body Time, but eventually it changed hands and you can now get the original scent from Perfectly Scentsable.
I mean yes that’s true but that’s the same for Rihanna and Selena. They both were using other makeup and skincare before their launches. It’s also about who is more marketable and who is “in.” Even fenty beauty wasn’t the first inclusive brand. There was Pat McGrath who is an actual makeup artist, and there was Imaan makeup line. People bought Rihanna’s because she was at the height of her fame.

I’ve fallen asleep listening to both James and Robert (not the twins though, lol) and I mean that in the best possible way. It’s like they’re telling me a bedtime story.
I think your observations about her lack of success here are spot on: price point, perception, packaging, her popularity at time of launch. Scott Barnes on social media showing how he gets JLo (or anyone for that matter) that glow. She missed her opportunity years ago. She has become a jack of all trades and seemingly master of none. 🤷🏻♀️
Because she's just average. Average singer, average dancer, average actress and not an artist. Iirc she only came to real attention in the UK when she was dating Diddy and was making songs with various rappers . It was like who is Diddys new gf In the gossip mags . First film she became really known for over here was monster in law
As a latina I never thought very much of JLo. I did like some songs but, she was just not my cup of tea. But AFTER her movie/documentary? Oh, boy I don't like her! Still, her influence can't be denied, she did cool things.
Are you talking about the movie "this is me now" ? That movie irked me so bad because it featured an Indigenous Puerto Rican fable. The movie showed the characters speaking Spanish. The Indigenous Puerto Ricans didn't speak Spanish. The people who killed them did.
As a boriqua, we were proud of jlo in the 2000s but I mostly only cared because she was married to Marc Anthony 😂 and as far as breaking barriers for Puerto Ricans/ Latinas, Rita Moreno became the 3rd person to earn an EGOT in 1977.
She's famous because Tommy Mottola, Mariah Carey's ex-husband, thought he could use JLo to overshadow Mariah. You can tell when there is no talent and only industry push.
@@Dainty213this is such a misogynistic thing to say. she is not a good person, but you don’t have to push right wing misogynistic rhetoric to say that.. you realize males also sleep their way around in the industry as well? in-fact they r*pe and assault as well. but you don’t talk about that.
JLo still has her good looks due to 2 main factors: 1. Habits which promote good blood circulation (doesn't smoke, trains routinely); 2. Stable body weight (saves her skin from stretching out and hanging loose after weight loss). I am sure she does loads more, but people who have these 2 factors on their side look good in their early 50s regardless.
She is still beautiful, but is very much looking her age when you happen to catch an unfiltered picture. Her crows feet and under eyes do not look like they’ve had any Botox. Just my opinion. Do I think she uses her own skincare line? Absolutely not! Her coming across as problematic, a diva, and the issues in her personal life I’m certain didn’t help any.
came right over from the insta live. thank you for hanging out with us, hearing your advice for people feeling lost in their 20s meant a lot to me. sleep well!
J. Lo glow is 100% having Scott Barnes. I bought his makeup products when he wasn’t so well known, and she didn’t help him at all with any monetary backing or even mentioning his products. They were top notch. The powders, eye shadows, blushes were made with the best ingredients in Germany and Italy. If you know you know. But they were pricey for a name not well known. The packaging was amazing as well. So well made. He’s got new makeup out now but I’m bedridden now. But that was a case where an incredibly talented MUA truly cared about the products he made. I’d compare to Lisa Eldridge. I think people have clued in celebrity companies (most, not all) are just doing it for the money. Diversifying. And people are overwhelmed and catching on. And omg, anyone saying their face looks 10 years younger after washing your face? I guess her faking her music career worked (I feel so much for those women whose songs and voices were taken from them. I wish so much it came out earlier. But she really believes she can sing.) And it failed because her big time had passed. It was just way too late.
She really did promote it like a 2000 celebrity perfume.. Felt extremely dated as a first impression. Her makeup artist doing what he did to Tati’s face didn’t help either 😂
Lol I remember him telling all he needed was that copper penny-lipstick when he forgot everything else. I think it was loreal lipstick I used to have too...
She gets work done, but nothing extreme. Laser facials, botox, etc. I'm Puerto Rican too, and while some of us Hispanic women do age well, it's still genetics, healthy living and having spendable income to take care of ourselves
She had a face lift for sure. That’s not just injectables. She also did something to her bone structure because her cheeks managed to get higher as she aged and her jaw line became more defined/angular as she aged.
@@sabichonex They also become more gaunt and still have sagging cheeks as a result, that's not the case with her. That's surgical intervention. Her jawline is completely different. Her cheekbones are higher. Cheekbones don't get higher with age.
Regrettably, I re-subscribed to Ipsy a year ago, and box after box have been such disappointments. I used to look forward to getting Ipsy & Boxycharm and all the extra boxes/bags I could afford back during the pandemic & before. Not that I don't like drugstore make-up, but I can go to a CVS or Walgreens in any town. I want to get those insanely priced items, the ones you know, that I'd never get to try because I could never afford to. All that to say this - to me, it appears that Ipsy seems to have become a place where some celebrity brands go to die. And refuse to give my hard-earned money on anything that has Jlo trademark on it so (I do wish there was a way to let Ipsy know to not include products by Jlo in my box or as one of my choices). Let her go to Marshall's or TJ Maxx where the others go to die 😂
I tried using her stuff, really did. Then I realized it was stupid to make myself use something that sucked. It's now in a landfill somewhere in America.
Hi James I 100% agree with u on this subject! I think this line would've been successful between 1999-2001. Packaging it fits perfectly with the aesthetic of Clinique, Estee Lauder, and Lancome at that time. Department store old school "luxury" skincare. We didn't know as much about skincare formulation, chemistry, ingredient knowledge etc. We r better informed now about everything u mentioned (ingredients, price, etc.) With the market saturation we all have learned so much about pricing, ingredient knowledge, cosmetic chemistry and formulation as well as products that seem to lack anything new or inventive to match such price points💜🖤
Me, at my 50+.Nobody can "catch" me, that creams and serums can make me "glow".La Prairie $575.00 has the same ingredient list as Nivea $11.96.Girls, save your 💰 for a rejuvenating therapy. The creams etc.only improve skin turgor.
I don’t consider people who lie about their past, assist in shooting innocent people, are rude and entitled, steal tips for a waitress making $2 an hour while having hundreds of millions in wealth and use other people’s voices as their own to be icons and I never will! Love your work though!
I saw a clip of Katy Perry behind the scenes of some awards show, she was doing something silly and JLo comes walking by. Katy says "Oh hi!" JLo ignored her like she wasn't good enough to acknowledge 😒 JLo's jealousy over Shakira at the Superbowl halftime show was obvious. Shakira was far superior in dance and performance.
Someone can be an "icon" in fashion/beauty *and* a bad person. It's not one of the other. Those things have nothing to do with each other. JLo was an IT girl in the 2000s.
I think the line would’ve made sense if the focus was on hardcore anti-aging ingredients and high percentages. No one expects her routine to be simple, so spf30, a one step cleanser and olives just feels dumbed down, while she’s clearly doing the most behind the scenes.
K beauty has my ❤ thanks to you James. I dont trust celebs who launch skincare and deny they have botox when clearly to those of us who have botox know they do. I used to spend hundreds on skincare until in my late 30s I discovered botox. Now I use k beauty for amazing skin and azzulure botox top up every 3 months for my wrinkles. Back in the day I loved jlow glow perfume, very inoffensive office soapy scent. And loved her in the film called enough.💙🖤
I like your point of making her brand stand out with more a real vibrant identity (like her green dress) instead of the tacky gold and clear plastic. Yikes!
Marketing failed her big-time. Had she marketed somewhere else like in Asia and even just collaborate with Lohrul where she once was an image model she may have not been a huge flop. She's a textbook case of brand mismanagement.
Jlo skincare didn't fit into the 2024 world. I feel like Jlo skincare may have appealed to me in 1997 on an infomercial. But I know way too much about skincare now to think it looked good. I love K/J beauty. Jlo served olive oil? No thanks. Never tried it and never had any interest.
James, I am absolutely and utterly uninterested in skincare - however, I still love listening to your videos…your voice is so soothing and I find it helps with my insomnia. Thank you for your help
In my opinion, I think Jlo came from a time when Hollywood women were DONE when they hit their 30s. I think she's been fighting time ever since. I find it sad that she can not embrace her age. She seems a bit reluctant to let go of the 90s. I think she's beautiful.
This!! Yes older women are mistreated but I feel like that was 15 years ago. Look Helen Miren, Salma Hayek, the Kardashian’s the real housewives of everywhere, Beyoncé etc a lot of the big celeb Hollywood women are over 35. And respected and admired for the beauty
She came out very late for a pop star (26 or 28), so she’s been fighting the very real influence of ageism in Hollywood, despite the improved status older women somewhat have today.
@@mystic_mimi21that’s the issue right there though “admired and respected FOR THEIR BEAUTY”, not for their talent - like men. That is what makes women think and behave in ways that are detrimental to themselves. I don’t see Ed Sheeran being respected for that. That’s just one example. Why do women always have to be beautiful? Not just average and talented elsewhere outside looks.
What a great analysis! I'm an ex-advertising executive, almost 51, and I never understood why she took so long to launch either. I agree with everything you say, except that she represented Latinas (I'm Mexican). It didn't feel like that back then because she was from the Bronx. She represented Latinas in the USA (only). Oh! And I laughed so hard when you spoke of olive oil. Before the double-cleansing Kbeauty brought us was a thing, I was taking my makeup off for years with virgin olive oil straight from my nearby delicatessen shop. Hahaha. It's funny how things just circle around. It's all about how you market things, which is why this analysis is so good. Procter and Gamble actually has a definition for this: Commercial Innovation, meaning the product is not intervened in. Based on this marketing principle, P&G has been bringing in billions of dollars a year on all its products. Very few of its brands actually have product innovation. Kudos and greetings from Mexico City!
i was actually so excited when it launched, thinking wow i can finally get that jlo glow! i'm so happy that James and other content creators really made me aware of all the false dreams it's selling and all the retouching of photos. i know now it was so naive of me, but i'm not good at spotting these things, so very grateful to all you wonderful influencers for educating me and saving me tons of money
14:08 😂😂 im sorry but i zoned out for so much of this video and for some reason the words "soothing Japanese rice" snapped me right back and i thought you were doing a factor meal sponsorship 😂😂😂
Another thing about JLo is she markets herself as Latina but only because it makes her money. I would be more interested in the skincare routines of older Latina icons like Salma Hayek and Gloria Estefan who look fabulous.
@@jujutrini8412 I think the main difference is that Salma actually posts unfiltered makeup free selfies and even has ones with her grey hair coming through. She's a little more authentic that way. 😊
@@amariaz Oh I see. I absolutely love Salma. She reminds me of my aunties when I was growing up. She seems to be accepting of her age but still taking great pride in her appearance. She seems very authentic to me.
Interesting to compare with Rare. When it first dropped, I honestly though Selena Gomez was just endorsing it. They definitely sold me on products and brand ethos over the celebrity aspect. Meanwhile, JLo beauty was about just that: JLo. Both didn't seem to have an immediate target audience, but Rare felt more like "everyone" was the target.
I got a couple of full-size JLo Beauty items in a subscription box, and it made me LIVID because it was so clearly just a deal they made to offload products no one wants. It made me unsubscribe, I was so mad.
One of the reasons I started watching your channel is to learn about skincare because I've never really known what the right thing to do with my skin is. When I hear about constant launches like this I find it even more intimidating, so I really appreciate that you take the time to talk about stuff like this. I still don't know what to use, but I do know what to avoid XD
Check out Dr. Dre, she's an excellent dermatologist and is extremely intelligent in presenting facts and stats. Another is Dr. Sam Ellis. If you want real and decent advice, look to professionals who aren't desperate to sensationalize everything or hate on everyone; that's so base and classless...

Speaking of post Covid skincare exhaustion, I took a long break from skincare influencers around 2021/22. I’m rediscovering James’ channel and I’m so impressed! He’s pivoted his content in a really smart way, to the video essay/deep dive format. A lot of the other skinfluencers seem imo stuck in a tired format. Glad to see him continue to shine and I love this content!!
You wondered why she launched a brand 2 decades after her peak popularity. She was always beautiful but I think she got more attention for her beauty specifically as she got older (and especially after the 2020 Superbowl) because she looked so good "for her age."
I actually received a sample of the facial moisturizer with a sephora order years ago and I loved it but I don't celebrity brands.Especially overpriced brands
IIRC, JLo peaked around 2003 because of her association with Ben Affleck. You can't escape Bennifer at the time. They are everywhere, and I was so bored and annoyed from the overexposure. Personally, even though I admit that she's a pretty woman, she's not THAT pretty. She's famous and rich, more likely because of her connections (Diddy, anyone?), not her talent or mere physical beauty. She worked hard and took care of herself diligently, I admire that from her, but that's it. I considered her no longer relevant since the early 10s with that remake song (I forgot the title, dance the night away or something, with that bald rapper dude?) And then she tried to recapture her fame by renew her relationship with the old fling (Bennifer Part II), but eh...she's just old news for me nowadays. I can't help but kinda evilly smirk watching her fakeries get exposed one, by, one... She's unbelievably rich already. Maybe it's time for her to retire, to age gracefully, and become a great, available, attentive mother to her children at home. I have big respect for such women.
I really liked her silly movie on Netfix, “Atlas.” It’s cringey, and the movie has to kind of play to Jenno’s limited range, but it had robots, a half-decent visual story, and I kind of like stupid movies. I don’t know if that’s much of a recommendation lol but if you have Netflix and are feeling mildly bitchy but also wanna zone out to nice colours, it could be worth wasting an hour and a half of your life on :D
Everything related to Jennifer Lopez is stuck in the early 2000s. I remember when her clothing line failed despite her massive media exposure. A simultaneous beauty brand launch coinciding with Glow would have been a success. Ultimately, what is lacking is true public support. They were just taken by her beauty, red carpet looks, and celebrity status. Her music had radio support (thanks to Tommy Mottola), and most of her hits took place at a time when people would still buy CDs based on liking one hit single, without previewing the album first. She never garnered a strong fanbase in the same way her peers have.
Great episode! It takes more than a name to keep a product selling, and it sounds like Jlo's products simply didn't perform in any way that would put them at the forefront of an already saturated market.
I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that celebrity products are successful also because the brand could stand alone even without knowing the celebrity behind it. I didn’t know initially that Rare beauty was Selena’s brand but it seemed to be doing good in the shops here in Australia. Associating it too much with the celebrity with the glittery tacky packaging seems to be more gimmicky since people are more ingredient literate and in touch with trends(including visual/packaging trends).
Love Jo lo Glow (the original). It’s one of my few perfumes that I can still smell on myself and my clothes at the end of the day.Not very good at describing the smell of perfumes but I would say it smells “clean”
It's lovely, I agree - I wore it @ one point. Top notes of orange flower, grapefruit and citrus, heart notes of rose, sandalwood and amber and base notes of jasmine, vanilla, musk, and orris. ;)
Her most recent interviews and snippets from her documentary have been a bit strange. I remember growing up begging my mom to have a spray of her Jlo Glo perfume, and idolizing her but now, not so much.
Selena’s rare beauty is successful because it’s stuck to the theam, it enhances your beauty without being heavy but Natural. It also helps that Selena is not full of fillers and fake looking and the line is completely based on the look she has always portrayed, clean and fresh. The advertising doesn’t look over filtered or airbrushed either.
Oh I completely disagree about Selena not being full of fillers, and not being fake looking. I actually think she looks unrecognizable now from how she used to look. She’s had way too much filler put in her face and upper cheekbones. She’s definitely had plastic surgery on her face especially in the eye/eyebrow area. And yes I know she has Lupus, and no I don’t think that’s what is wrong with her face. She’s had awful surgery results and she’s starting to go overboard with it and is starting to look almost disfigured from it
@@EnvyBluno she also takes meds for her lupus, kidney transplant, and bipolar amid other health issues. Her face swells and her weight fluctuates frequently because of all her medications. Stop assuming everyone gets surgery.
I actually loved her Glow perfume, it has such a fresh scent! And I heard that she was very involved into whole process of creating her perfumes. At the time. But her newest brand skincare line does not seem so genuine. The fact that she is trying to convince us that she uses her own brand to stay young looking is a ridiculous concept.
Oh my word id TOTALLY forgotten about that perfume until your comment! What a blast from the past! That was a good perfume! (I havnt gotten to that part of video yet)
@@notmycat2097 It's hard to find it now. I found it in Spain but I spent all my money on Alien perfume and couldn't afford it even thou it was much cheaper (but Alien is my fav).
Be weary of believing all the biased bs some uninformed haters are desperate to propagate out of jealousy or whatever else. Her line hasn't "failed" at all!! It's around and kicking ass - just as she is. Do your own research - don't believe anyone - especially on this platform;)
That late 90's-2000's was quite an era for celebrity perfumes. I'm still hunting down to this day Lady Gaga's Fame and Queen Latifah's Queen Of Hearts perfumes. There were celebrity perfumes that are toeing the line of niche brands like Sarah Jessica Parker.
Glad you mentioned Murad. IMHO is is great for older skin. Their exfoliating grains are the only ones gentle enough, yet effective enough, for my skin. Also love their revitalix serum.
I remember an article from years back, early 2000s for sure, that she had ordered a pizza or something and when they came to the door her self-tan hadn't dried, so she answered the door naked! 😂
Oh gosh she knew what she was doing! I worked at a hotel as a room service order taker. The waiters who delivered the food said people did that ALL the time. It is intentional.
As a teen in the early 2000s, I would have *slathered* myself in any product with JLo's stamp of approval for. (Yes, that includes her fragrance) You're 100% correct: that's some bad timing!
A little off topic, but your channel is how I constructed my first ACTUAL skin care routine in 2021. I was going through a lot and knew I needed some serious self care. I binged your videos and listened to recommendations based on my skin type and it transformed my skin and 3 years later I have come so far with skin care and it’s improved my makeup application on myself and clients immensely. THANKS JAMES 💜🖤🖤💜 you’re a gem and I still love your skin care videos! 🫶🏼
The whole brand is a bit "meh". I didn't even know they were still selling as I haven't seen them anywhere. The products might have had a chance, if the prices were more attainable for the regular people and also, the obvious one, you can get a bottle of olive oil for 10 € and be done with it. I use olive, jojoba and avocado oil on my face and cuticles and the cost is minimal compared to JLo's concoctions. Why buy the expensive products when the effective ingredient is available at your local grocery store?
I totally agree with you, James, that if Jlo had brought out her skincare in the early 2000s it would have been a success. Now people got so much more skin care savvy and her skincare line just can't deliver anything outstanding. There are so many great skincare brands out there that are outstanding, cheaper- not speaking about all the great K/J beauty products. Her advertising was very bad- totally filtered, with make up on. People don't want this, it's not a good marketing strategy. If I buy luxury skincare - I want something that performs outstandingingly and has as well luxurious packaging and not gold and plastic. Thank you so much for this breakdown, James ❤ xxx
I have said this a million times. she should have dropped powder bronzer and self tan. I know she has the star filter. But it should have been about makeup
Perhaps she didn't want to appear to enter in competition with her then makeup artist Scott Barnes. He had (& still has) his own line which included the signature tan and glow products he claimed he used on the beautiful JLo herself ;)
The scream laugh that came out of me when this first dropped and the audacity of her saying her line is affordable 😂😂 100 plus for olive oil was wild .

The fact that Ellen and Brad Pitt had skincare lines is insane 😅😅 Who's going to them for skincare advice!

When I heard she said she wanted the products to be affordable and accessible but the serum is $100, I was so done. Lol
Affordable is when Jennifer Lopez can afford it, dus. She's the main character after all!
Right
As someone who has worked with skin care for years I honestly don’t think they should have even marketed it as affordable.

Great point about the development mentally
I wouldn’t support her for how rude she is to people who are “lower” than her.
@@teresamckeown5594 yeah... that kills it
i agree, for someone who is 51, she does come off a bit immature and lacking the type of wisdom and intellectualism you would expect at that age. and part of that is how surface level and appearance-obsessed she and her brand still is.

What revelations? Is it just people remembering that they dated?

These celebrities use cosmetic chemists to create them. Like when they make perfumes, it’s a team of people making it - and people designing the packaging. came right over from the insta live. thank you for hanging out with us, hearing your advice for people feeling lost in their 20s meant a lot to me. sleep well!
Oh dang sad I missed this one wish there was a replay
Feeling lost in your 20s (even late ones) is totally normal, and part of maturing into adulthood.
in your twenties, you are still finding yourself. your THIRTIES are when you finally know what you want, and you get to have fun doing what you love !
I didn’t get my 20’s due to being homeless 😢
With the rise of bronze drops over the past year or so, they had so much opportunity but no one was even looking for them in the trend
@@kissarococo2459 I wore that one in high school, in the 80s, as in 1980s😝. It was called Bronze Coin by L’Oréal.
She was so huge back then I even named my dog after her. Little Lopez, Rest In Peace.
So cute ❤
She gets work done, but nothing extreme. Laser facials, botox, etc. I'm Puerto Rican too, and while some of us Hispanic women do age well, it's still genetics, healthy living and having spendable income to take care of ourselves
I think she has had surgery too.
She had a face lift for sure. That’s not just injectables. She also did something to her bone structure because her cheeks managed to get higher as she aged and her jaw line became more defined/angular as she aged.
@@SR-zv5ue Some women do get bonier/more angular with age.
@@sabichonex They also become more gaunt and still have sagging cheeks as a result, that's not the case with her. That's surgical intervention. Her jawline is completely different. Her cheekbones are higher. Cheekbones don't get higher with age.
She has tons of surgeries and injectables
JLo beauty was in Ipsy subscriptions recently...not a good sign! A lot of brands go there at the end of their life spans
I've gotten two products from ipsy of hers and they both are not good lol
I noticed that too about Ipsy.
Holy 😮
Katy says "Oh hi!" JLo ignored her like she wasn't good enough to acknowledge 😒
JLo's jealousy over Shakira at the Superbowl halftime show was obvious.
You know a Latina I would get behind if she released a skincare line? Shakira. A seemingly kind person, still relevant, still GORGEOUS at almost 50.
Why am I watching this, I don’t care about Jlo. Because it’s James!!
Her 30’s is when she glowed up with the blonde highlights like Mariah Carey
I love these behind the brand videos
I hate glowing skin/glass skin looks. To me it just looks oily and greasy.
Me too!

14:08 😂😂 im sorry but i zoned out for so much of this video and for some reason the words "soothing Japanese rice" snapped me right back and i thought you were doing a factor meal sponsorship 😂😂😂
😂😂😂
James’s voice is very soothing 😂
😂
@@Pinkosaurus he made it sound so good 😂 my hungry ass heard "Rice?"
Maid in Manhattan is one of her best movies, period. I love certain songs throughout her career, but not all of them.
Too bad that when an actual maid in a hotel asked her for an autograph, she got her fired.
She was also so fit and talented she easily played a stripper in her fifties. She's amazing. I hear her concerts are great but her hey day is over.
@Ariadne76-k3d I didn't know that, wow!
You forgot her start as a dancer especially on living color
That's always what I think of first with her!
He giving is a biography like we dont know who she is lmao
please never stop this series, it’s my favorite thing to listen to while i’m doing my skincare!
* Rose to stardom in the early 90s as a dancer on the iconic show "In Living Color"
ICONIC
Another thing about JLo is she markets herself as Latina but only because it makes her money. I would be more interested in the skincare routines of older Latina icons like Salma Hayek and Gloria Estefan who look fabulous.
I thought Jennifer and Salma were the same age so I was confused by your comment. So I looked it up. There’s only three years between them. 😂
??? Jlo IS Latina, she isn't "marketing" herself as being Latina - what a preposterous thing to say! Dumb AF
The video taking about “look no wrinkles” while working so hard not to move her face at ALL. Ok girl.
You nailed it. Boring, expensive, disingenuous.
All the gold plastic packaging reminds me of "luxury" line from Oriflame 😅
Some of oriflame's products r actually pretty good
Hers r shitty AF
Fenty and rare beauty are elite compared to this. Personally love both brands.
Now I really wanna learn more about all the failed cash grab celebrity brands. 😂
More coming soon 😌
Me too! I had no idea there were so many, because I really don't pay attention... but now I wanna know!
Me too! I had no idea there were so many, because I really don't pay attention... but now I wanna know!
Every single celebrity has a line. You name one they have one. It's actually sickening. Not good for the environment not good for anything other than their own greed.@@jocelynsmyth6604
"People just don't care". 100% agree. I just watched the video because you made it. 😂❤
You wondered why she launched a brand 2 decades after her peak popularity. She was always beautiful but I think she got more attention for her beauty specifically as she got older (and especially after the 2020 Superbowl) because she looked so good "for her age."
I'm 58. Things weren't matte back then.
Hadn't been for AGES!! Also, we SO were into skincare. Quite amusing!
I love JLO beauty! Her oil and sunscreen are my favorite products. The lip mask is also incredible!
I actually received a sample of the facial moisturizer with a sephora order years ago and I loved it but I don't celebrity brands.Especially overpriced brands
I love that intro... I hate it when people act like JLo wasn't a massive deal. Movie after movie. Banger after Banger.
Off topic, but you sold me on Glow Recipe and I have to say at 44 years old there’s def been a noticeable difference in my skin 💜
She should have done body care tbh, that would have been more interesting when she launched because it wasn’t as “trendy” yet
Nobody here but us olives.😊💚
@@EnvyBlukeep in mind that also Selena has a medical Issue that has made her weight fluctuate. I believe she's on different medications as well
@@EnvyBlui definitely disagree
@EnvyBlu that is a medication side effect. Maybe learn more about her chronic illness and what the meds do to people.
Whoa. The ozempic is working overtime here!!!
I still wear it. It’s the perfect clean scent ❤
@@notmycat2097 It's hard to find it now. I found it in Spain but I spent all my money on Alien perfume and couldn't afford it even thou it was much cheaper (but Alien is my fav).
@@notmycat2097True! It is.
@@biljam972oh I’m in the U.K. and it’s easily available here, and cheap too
Based on most of the comments I just read, looks like her skincare line failed because people hate JLO🤷♀️.
Be weary of believing all the biased bs some uninformed haters are desperate to propagate out of jealousy or whatever else. Her line hasn't "failed" at all!! It's around and kicking ass - just as she is. Do your own research - don't believe anyone - especially on this platform;)
As a woman in my 40s, of course I had the jlo glow perfume. I can remember the smell very clearly.
Same here.
Youre glowing James ❤❤❤❤
It’s makeup 🥲😂
so no spf bronzer 😂 jokes aside you are looking good tho ❤
"J.LO Beauty" as a Brand Name sounds cheap. She should have left her name out of the Brand.
I don't know if her skincare is good or not, i never bought it but i have to say, i love her perfumes, they are my favorites.
I'm seeing her brand everywhere in beauty boxes & beauty advent calendars this year. Here & in the UK.
