Jolly Roger Bay in Super Mario 64 is a level I will never forget. The soundtrack of the level, Dire Dire Docks, is still one of my favorite Mario songs. But there's a lot of odd things about this sealed off water hole... From the mysteries of how it was formed, to a floating invisible pirate ship in the sky. Join me on a journey back to this nostalgic N64 Mario level in another edition of Pixel Portals!

You don't get the physics right. There can be a cave under water with no water in it. As long as it has no other exit where air could escape the room.
Fill a bathtub with water. Then turn a glass upside down and put it into it. You see that it creates a dry room. As long as you don't let the air escape.

Knowing someone else, if just one person, exists like me in that regard is so satisfying, and I look forward to hearing more from you on subjects like this.
And you also sent a shiver down my spine at the mention of how this level's music inspired you to play piano. Cause yeah, me too. But maybe that's just a common thought process.

That is one of the relatively few big band numbers I like, but I'm generally more fond of music that strikes me as 'beautiful' or 'emotional' than upbeat pieces like the vast majority of Mario fare. That's why Jolly Roger Bay's theme is so memorable to me--it's not like most Mario music. And that's probably also why I like most Donkey Kong music more than most Mario music.

lol it is such an easy explanation to as how the ship got there.
The water level was higher and then WHOLE level was under water at one point. the pirates used the hidden caves (which had air in them) to store their treasure. (hence the cave with chests in it) The pirates either left the boat, or died, or something, and years later the water lowered to the point the boat could no longer get out.

Jolly Roger Bay is, to this day, my favorite location in a Mario game, probably in a video game period. I played the DS version growing up, so the sky was dark and foggy every time I went there. That just sort of added to the dreamy feel of the stage. It's still always my favorite part of a Mario 64 playthrough.

It's really more about air pressure than anything.
The pressure exerted by the air has to be greater than the pressure exerted by water pushing the air against the cave walls.
Remember, air is compressible, but water isn't.
As water levels raise, the air in the cave that has no where to go will be compressed by the pressure of the water, but as some point the pressures equalize and the water stops raising.

I think of it as a painting, and when you jump into that painting it turns into a fully fleshed world. And since it's a painting it doesn't necessarily need to make sense. The only thing I can't explain is why after the pirate ship raises the painting still shows it sunk, but then again you can visit the old stage too (at least I think so?) so maybe that's why.

    B. What you say about water-levels only works when both water-surface-points connect to the same 'air-pocket', but the cave is not connected to the main 'air-pocket', making it more like an empty glass that has been pushed upside down into the water and less like a siphoning-tank that's placed too high.

Actually you can have a dry cave under water as long as the air has nowhere else to go. Because air is still matter, it isn't a vacuum just because it invisible, which means that the air would stop the water from entering due to pressure. If you had a very large box with a hatch, put that box in a body of water completely submerged with the hatch on the bottom, and open the hatch, you'd notice that the air wouldn't escape and you'd have a sort of air bubble under water.

Suggestion/Idea. :: How could an abandoned/sunken ship end up in a caldera with sea water and animals? Simple. It is a sea volcano. Most of Earths volcanos are actually on the sea floor.
So, there is a dormant undersea volcano. Then, plate movements slowly push it higher and higher until the rim is above the surface. At some point, the rim was high enough to breach the surface, but it was still low enough that there was sea access on one side, or a high wave could crash over it ... taking a ship with it ... with no way to get out again.
If you imagine the ocean as far as you can see outside those spiky walls, it makes perfect sense. Just a lonely caldera poking out of the sea in the middle of nowhere with a long forgotten ship trapped inside. It could actually happen. No "Magic Transportation" required.
    Just a Thought.

  • @Ian64

So my theory with SM64’s worlds is that they are paintings. Of course. But they are paintings of already-existing locations in Mario’s world (case in point Whomp’s Fortress is a painting of Throwback Galaxy), also the boss paintings in Odyssey paintings of the bosses found in Odyssey.
Of course some, more abstract locations in 64 could be abstract paintings not based on any locations in-mario-universe. (Rainbow Ride, Wet Dry World, the secret courses perhaps.)
In fact, it could be really cool if Nintendo ever does a “reimagining” of 64’s concept. Some really interesting levels could be set inside totally abstract Picasso-like paintings.

  • @TehCheat3

I took a look at the code the object ran and it's actually quite interesting. It really IS a "Ghost Ship." It's a very simple object that does one thing, it changes its transparency dynamically as mario gets closer/further from the object. At distances greater than 10000, it's hardcoded to cap out at ~55% opacity, and gets lower as mario gets closer to the object. However, the object also explicitly hides its own model every frame, which is why you can't ever see it despite it being active in Act 1. I've created a gameshark code that No-op's the instruction responsible for hiding the ship so you can see it for yourself (make sure to enable it before entering JRB, and select act 1 of course.) The best way to see the effect is to open the cannon and then shoot at it.

I think my favourite course in Super Mario 64 has to be either Wet-Dry World, or Rainbow Ride. I always enjoyed the mechanics of the changing water levels in the former and the atmosphere in the latter.

I know this is an old video, but I have such a complex relationship with this level. When I was little it terrified me, like it did so many others I guess? I had no idea it was such a popular opinion. I was also terrified of water levels. I also visited the fish tanks outside the painting. But it also fascinated me, and was really peaceful. I love the music. And now its one of my biggest nostalgia trips. When I play today I visit the level a lot. Can you love something and be terrified of it all at the same time? Cause I think thats how I felt about it.

Huge fan of the ambience and overall feel of Jolly Roger Bay. It makes me think of when I was maybe 7 years old and my friend got an N64 with Mario 64. It’s so interesting to think of Mario 64 in that same light when everything was still new, exciting, surprising, and unknown... when it would take literally an hour or more just to get a couple stars. I remember their giant tube TV just looking beautiful with these new graphics. The tidbit about the fog is interesting! I always remember the fog but would realize that it disappeared and wasn’t sure why. This is still one of my favorite songs to listen to while at work while doing tasks or under the influence. Just makes me want to get into a sleeping back and play.

I want a sequel to this game taking place back inside the castle, but with more rooms, more corridors, more to do, a bunch more stars to collect (like 500), more secrets, new paintings, creepier locations, larger areas/levels, and a darker, more serious tone while keeping the same kinds of atmospheres and adding more of the same magic to them. I want it to be more intense, and I want it to be scary at times.

  • @gdarcticwolf6226

The ship could very well be there to save data. In the first star, the game could copy the ship’s model down under the water, but the game glitches and didn’t hide the ship’s original model. In the second star, the game could move the ship down into the water on the surface. I’m not sure though.

The best thing about the music is how the audio develops and evolves as you progress to newer areas. That was considered a key selling point of cartridges at the time as it was believed that such a smooth transition would be impossible with CDs.

I used to turn on Super Mario 64 when I didn't feel well or wanted to relax or sleep and leave it on the file select screen. The music was a pure lullaby- just like Jolly Rodgers Bay. :3 Sweetest and fond memories of that. :3 ❤

I loved this place as well. When I was a kid I grew up in a house that had a pool outside, not one of those pricey houses that have a screened in pool or anything, but I loved swimming. Mario 64 was the first game I got when n64 came out and when I found this level I fell in love with it. The music, the water, the diving I connected immediately with it. Nowadays the music gives me chills because nostalgia and what not since I'm almost 30, but I still spend time in this level just swimming around and doing nothing pretty much

It has a special nostalgia for me because it was the first video game system I could afford after I got out on my own. Super Mario 64 was one game I really grew up playing when I had the N64 console back during the later 90s (aside from the crazy and hilarious cartridge tilting experiences I got out of this game). Most of the worlds themselves aren't too nostalgic for me, including Jolly Roger Bay. But the music from that course definitely is.
I still easily remember how interesting it was hearing it back then and it still is to this day. And, the nostalgia effect of it nowadays is too great to me every time I hear it that I sometimes really wish I was back in the 90s reliving my childhood and house I grew up in, and playing this game all by myself on the N64 at night on a small old box tv in a quiet cozy and carpet living room on one end of the house.

Regarding the air-filled chamber in the cave :
It's actually possible to do that. True, it would be filled with water if air had an exit other than the entrance (where water and Mario come in from)
This is called Bernoulli's Law and it allows for air pockets to exist since air being less dense than water cannot push it's way through water to create a void for the water to fill.
So yeah, your childhood dreams of a sub-sea level chamber are still possible?
Just mind that the lower the air pocket is, the stronger water pushes against it so..local atmospheric pressure in that air pocket might be several tens of hundreds of times that of sea-level air.
    Love the nostalgia!

This level was also like my own little quiet space on the N64, and I would literally just go into this level to relax. To kids today it's probably too small and uneventful of a level to feel attached to, but this being one of the first things like this in any 3D thing I'd ever experienced, and to be able to just swim around and listen to the track (without bloopers and cheep-cheeps attacking) made it very tranquil. The sunken ship stuff also gives it a magical fantasy kind of feeling, which really puts you in the frame of mind to start speculating and thinking up stories about that world. It's strange to say, but I think it's one of the best virtual environments ever made, even if it is one of the worst levels to give people the core experience of a Mario game (with running, jumping, etc.).

    • @sparrowthesissy2186
      @sparrowthesissy2186 5 років тому

Oh, and if you hold a cup upside down and push it into the water the air stays in the cup underwater. I assume that's the same logic behind the underwater cave: there's nowhere for air to be displaced to so water doesn't rush in.

That ship is probably just the place you teleport when you enter the sunken ship. The tilt matches the tilt of the level stage and it is common for developers to place the inside of rooms as a separate entity above where they occur in the overworld. They did the same with the shine sprite shop in sunshine.

The reason it's only there in the first mission is because the sunken ship and floating ship are different entities. The floating ship is the same ship that's in the water in later missions. They can't just delete it, otherwise it wouldn't be there in other missions. So, they just stuck it up in the sky, made it invisible, and removed collision.
