The fact they're are two different versions of the three final shields makes me think there were plans of an upgrade system. Perhaps, the more rings you have, the better your shield will be.
2:24 Most fans theorized that the sneeze move is for detecting enemies or oncoming danger. The evidence for this is in the Opening of CD, where, right before the mountain collapses on Sonic, he sneezes for a split second, like a "Spider-Sense" of sorts. This could have been a way to stop players from constantly running into obstacles that they couldn't see.
The sneeze was also in the manga, where it functions the same way, and mentioned in Sonic Jam. The sneeze should come back since we now have open zone games.
2:18 Fun fact, Sonic once had a special ability in Japan where he would sneeze if there was incoming danger. You can see it in CD’s intro right before the rocks start falling towards Sonic. So that’s probably what the sneeze animation was for.
This is also the case in the OVA. It's probably bexause of the moth enmies in collision chaos, though, since their powder doesnt do anything otherwise.
@@titanic_monarch796 Or maybe both? Even then, this ability was quickly forgotten. They probably cut it from CD because they thought Sonic sneezing was pointless in gameplay. And it’s not as interesting as being the fastest thing alive.
@@SaddieMoon I can imagine that it would make the projectiles extremely annoying. They defenitely retained it for a while since the ova released three years later, but it's defenitely a pity it got dropped afterwards given I think it's a neat little trait to give sonic besides just Go Fast
The Sonic Sneezing sprite animation is from a lost/forgotten concept of Sonic sneezing whenever there is danger essentially a Sonic Sense. The ability is shown in the Sonic CD Opening where Sonic Sneezes before avoiding falling rocks. I believe presumably the sprite animation was to be used before a Boss appeared.
Tbh this is what I believe eventually turned into that smug nose rubbing thing sonic used to do in the classic era all the way through the adventure series.(Shown especially in Sonic X) since after sonic sneezes in the Sonic CD intro he rubs his nose in the exact same way. Sadly even that has been forgotten now.
2:21 I believe it's stated in some VERY old media that Sonic has a kind of third sense where he'll sneeze when there's incoming danger. You can see this in the opening cinematic of Sonic CD, where he sneezes right before the chain holding Little Planet breaks the rock spire and sends boulders hurtling down at him.
4:50 false: the walljump was used in the final game - "Knuckles' Chaotix" - by the character "Mighty The Armadillo." Future titles such as Sonic Colors, Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Generations (to name a few) allowed for Sonic to walljump or walljump in certain segments depending on the title.
I wonder if a Sonic fangame will ever implement most of these scrapped shields? It's interesting how some of the scrapped shields resemble shields that were added to Sonic Time Twisted.
There's one in the works that also gives each shield additional functionality in line with the final 3 elemental shields but the project's not far enough in development yet to even have a name
That prototype mole Knuckles would be perfect for sonicteam to reuse later as a new character. Maybe call him something similar like "Fists" , "Wrists" or "Palm" (they sound weird but remember that our favourite red echidna is literally called "Knuckles" which would of sounded strange at his introduction; we just got used to it :D
Before watching, I remember reading about different elemental shields that were intended to be in X-treme. It didn't say what each shield did, only that there was a rock paper scissors system. I imagined what they'd all do as a part of interpreting X-treme for my AU. I imagine Metal Shield would basically be the Black Shield, Wind Shield would allow Tiara to glide, Rock Shield would effectively be Power Stomp, and Fire Shield in 3D would be the Homing Attack.
2:22 It is often theorised that this sneezing animation was going to be used if you touched the golden powder the moth badniks drop down on you in collision chaos.
2:22 I think this sneezing animation would've been used before a boss, because Sonic has this really obscure abilities where if danger is nearby, he sneezes.
Oh hey, overdelivery? Certainly a nice surprise to get more than the title promises, definitely a good move. Really nice video, didn't know about most of these, glad to have some light shed on them
4:39 That’s actually wrong, as it’s featured in almost every Sonic game with a boost. Side note, if anyone’s wondering where this move is used in Knuckles Chaotix. That’s Mighty’s special ability.
2:24 one of sonic's original forgotten abilities was him sneezing whenever danger approached, so this animation would probably be used before a boss fight
This could be implemented in some kind of fangame! Here are my ideas for the existing shields, that could be unlocked via collecting an artifact (Chaos Emerald, Time Stone or whatever you want it to be): 🔥 Add a damaging fireball that revolves the player at max running speed or higher; 💧 Add increased underwater "handling", Tails' underwater stamina and Knuckles' swimming speed; ⚡ Add a radial attack and make it unable to deflect projectiles during its cooldown time. Here are my ideas for "all-new" shields, with some features you could limit the same way as the former ones: 🕊 *Feather Shield* (Wheel + Wing): Enhances running and Knuckles' gliding acceleration, jumping and Tails' airborne stamina, instantly launches the player in Spin Dash and Super Peel Out and grants brief invincibility for Sonic while performing the latter; 🌀 *Gravity Shield* (Magnet + Heavy + Break): Removes running acceleration (spinning gets unaltered) and decreases max speed (slightly less for Knuckles, due to his strength), but allows navigation on walls and ceiling, as well as ring attraction; ♻ *Recycling Shield* (Enemy + Block): As the player makes progress through the game, it can store three kinds of junk: destroyed Badnik parts, rubble (from breakable walls and crumbling platforms) and "non-energy-based" projectiles. The player can consume junk to use as a platform and stack it (keeping the last material used) or as a slow homing projectile that doesn't pass through walls. Each kind of junk stored count as an extra hit point for the shield; ⭕ *Ring Shield* (Ring + Combi-Ring + Unused ability): Generates one ring every five seconds and allows the player to shoot two rings in opposite directions at a cost of one. They pass through walls and can collect other rings. Upon losing the shield, it turns into an upgraded version of Combi-ring, as lost 2-10 rings are grouped in one Combi-ring, and lost greater amount of rings turn into a single bouncing Combi-Catcher-like figure of the player character.
I feel like the Magnet Shield could've definitely been a thing, due to the fact that your literally able to stick to metal in Sonic Mania with the Lightning Shield.
The block shield ended up appearing in Jazz Jackrabbit as a diamond shield that gains a diamond each time you break the monitor, and will damage enemies that collide with you.
2:22 One of Sonic's lesser-known abilities is that he sneezes when danger is near (like Spidey sense). It was a bit of lore that never really made it to the USA (except in Sonic Jam's manual and SonicCD's intro) before kind of dying out. If I remember correctly it's still considered cannon by SEGA, just not used frequently or pointed out.
2:17 = There's the concept Sonic sneezes always when a danger is approaching, working as Spider-Man's spider-sense. In Sonic CD's ooening animation, Sonic stops his run to sneeze when the boulders are about to fall off over Sonic.
I believe that the Japanese name for Echidna means Spike Mole. The early concepts for Knuckles are mostly used in the OVAs, including his sunglasses, and him being called a mole.
4:50 mighty the armadillo in that very game… Sonic unleashed, generations, forces, colours And sonic is allergic to danger in some early iterations of him as seen in the sonic cd opening cutscene he actually sneezes
I feel like a nice shield idea would be the Wind Shield, where it would give a more slower fall to the player and, specific to Sonic 3's Angel Island Act 2, prevent you from dying from the smoke (since I'm not sure how Sonic wouldn't be timed in that stage to make it to the exit before he passes out from inhaling all that smoke)
3:42 Digging gloves eh? How concidental that the Sonic Adventure games adapted this ablity with the Shovel Claws allowing Knuckles to dig to find Emerald Shards.
0:40 very vague, can't tell it's worse or better than standard fire shield 0:57 this one would be interesting, but I'd rather merge it with bubble shield 1:02 great shield idea ngl 1:07 feels like a slightly upgraded version of the classic shield from s1 & s2 1:12 eh just electric but downgraded 1:19 actually interesting tbh, despite just being part of hyper sonic's moveset 1:25 this one is great too, I'd imagine if hyper tails got one of those, there'd be more flickies 1:32 actual health system in a classic sonic game???
