The Definitive Development History of Knuckles' Chaotix
Knuckles' Chaotix started out as a very ambitious attempt at Sonic the Hedgehog 4 by many of the same developers that worked on Sonic CD. In this video we'll explore all aspects of its development from its start on the Genesis to its potential shift to Saturn and eventual DUMP on 32x.

Vector is the best Sonic character. He pulled Vanilla. He's a milf enjoyer
I'm curious what the story was planned to be, with certain location choices, the swamp seeming to have some sort of pipe puzzle from what I saw in a different video, and then stuff like the Plaid thing that's not finished to the point if graphics. Then there's the Epygt hall with the gaps that seemed to be there for a reason, but doesn't seem to have any signs of a boulder or anything. Then there's the enemies, having different Koopa varients, then the walrus things.
the fact sonic 4 should have just been a mobile game
5:29 why is no one mentioning the super sonic art thats straight out of dragon ball
26:29 Massive? You Know What Else Is Massive!?!?!? >:3
When i was younger I thought it was a game about sonic eating crackers 💀
Man, these writers really liked their OC, Tiara the Mexican.
Sorry, but I have rewatched this numerous times. All I can hear is "Tiara the Mexican." Well she's getting deported.
We might get GTA 6 before Sonic 2 HD
this hud looks awesome, is there a mod for it 55:20
Aparently, the civilazations of Neo Green Hill were Romans
The graphics specifically references real GREEK pillars and sculptures you can find real photos of online. It's greek.
@@GameFactsSpecial I said it because it was wrote in the manual of the game. I'm Italian, and, when I was reading the italian part, the manual said: Antichi romani si aggirano nel lago sprofondato (Ancient Romans wander the sunken lake)
@ gotcha makes sense they wouldn't think about it too hard in the manual.
@ What do you mean?
@RetroGreg-ef7im people that are writing the foreign manuals get things wrong a lot.
Garrulous64?
Likely
Star Force 4 and Legends 3 were to finish their respective uncompleted series of their respective timelines.
Small correction: Espio does not mean spy in spanish
Google Translate disagrees. It does.
The game was crap
Wait, did that 1992 comic with Mighty and Ray and the Oshima art that inspired it come before or after development on the Sega Sonic arcade started?
Jun actually recognized Sonic Clackers, when someone showed him the rom, playing on PSP emulator, so he was either involved in the early planning stages, or simply - helped on some point of development.
fun fact, on almost all of the merch released in the 90s for sonic it was also labeled “segasonic”, except in 1991, where they managed to keep the sonic the hedgehog name for some merch. i have a plush from the first plush set of sonic where the tag has “sonic the hedgehog”
Everyone just got Silvagunnered 😹😹
I read that Sega didn't have the rights to use the word Sonic in arcades, due to Taito owning the rights with their Sonic Blast Man series.
Ooo that would make a lot of sense. May make a follow up. Thanks for the info!
I had figured this out from examining the prototypes
Chaotix A Saturn Game That Would Be Even Wilder That Game Was Amazing And It Can Only Get Even Better
If it was intended for Saturn, I'm curious as to which direction it would have gone for, 2D CGI ala DKC? If so, I'm not surprised Nights got the priority for the 'wow' factor, although I can't help but wonder what might have been if they kept Chaotix for Saturn, regardless of it's form.
Jun Senoue didn’t compose the entirety of the Genesis 3D Blast soundtrack, he just programmed the music in. Most of the songs are credited to Tatsuyuki Maeda.
My bad... could edit it out
Never been able to play this game for more than a few minutes. I think I still have the cart even though I haven't had a 32x in like 25 years.
I bought a 32x for this game in the 90s, I still own a complete copy. I hated it. It really gives you perspective how bad it is if your partner dies and you get a few seconds of playing solo, realizing it could be so much better feeling without the tether.
Why is this game stuck on the 32x, it was clearly supposed to be on the sonic gems collection but for whatever reasons didn't make it considering the comprehensive coverage on the title in gems collection
As someone who had this game and a 32x: Charmy + Heavy was the best combo
Wish it had been included in Sonic Origins
Knuckles' Chaotix is peak Sonic Aesthetic. I'd love a remake that turns it into a complete Saturn game (with the option to play the original 32X version). I still have my 32X but it would be great to see a modern release.
11:36 yea, it was called Chaotix in the PAL regions too AND the US. LOOK AT THE TITLE SCREEN IN-GAME. The ONLY reason it was marketed as "Knuckles Chaotix" is because you're introducing a bunch of obscure sonic characters MOST people would have never heard of. Having Knuckles, the NEW sonic character 'headline' the game (on western box art) was a clever marketing trick, to get people to buy a 32x to play the latest 'Sonic' game. The game is called Chaotix. NOTHING ELSE. Get over it!
12:35 …Why give us that information?
These videos are designed to be packed full of information and if you didn't play those games you might not know.
If I had to guess, they either didn't play the games, or wrote the video script using chatgpt. Bomb does not blow up when colliding against another player character.
@@NeoExperiences Good guesses... but wrong twice XD. I simply was mistaken. Most of the footage in the video is my playing the game except where noted.
kagero mansion 100% except I want to be released and an actual RPG style like a turn based style RPG game was a few different endings, but they’re all good
This is actually a really interesting video. Why is always rush development? I hate how much that history repeat itself over and over many of Sega games that prevented them to reach their true potential. That and a lot of corporative mess. By the way espio does NOT mean spy in spanish. Spy= Espía Espío= the action of spy in spanish But the name lacks the accent.
It would make sense why Sega decided to cut certain levels - Wood Hill Zone, Ocean Wind Zone, Genocide City Zone, Death Egg Zone (which was only cut down to the final boss), Hidden Palace Zone and Rock World Zone.e, then i
This and transformed are one of my biggest surprises ever and my favorites games to revisit
"E-van-gee-Leon" lol what
20:26 this bonus stage that got scrapped from Sonic CD seemingly got used in Sonic Superstars, which isn't surprising since Naoto Oshima worked on both. Basically you navigate through one maze until you're forwarded along to the next one which is in the background as shown in that picture.
well they got rid of the high speed warp in sonic 1's development. That wouldve made a lot of sense
Ray was only playable prior in "SEGA Sonic The Hedgehog," in arcades. Great video though! Someone should mod Ray in that game with his Mania moveset tho
Also one of the few games that had yet to be ported ANYWHERE
why is this fangame nostalgic wtf
What about the bouncer egg robo it's the egg robots first apoearance
Gotta love the fire console pixel art and nicely done summary of knuckles’ chaotic🔥🔥
Thanks! There is a bigger video on the channel. Check it out :)
I played this when it was still somewhat relevant (96/97). I didn’t have a next Gen console and got the 32X and games as they were going on clearance. I enjoyed the heck out of Chaotix. Wasn’t the best game I played or anything like that, but it was an easy 8.5/10 in my book as a 10yo. It wasn’t a system seller, but it was a good game. There are a few titles like this one and a few late Genesis games that I had always wondered, why didn’t they make an upgraded version for Saturn, like Sonic 3D or some of the Genesis to Sega CD games with extra content. Sega as a company was definitely chaotic during this era.
Another problem with Knuckles Chaotix and the 32X is the fact that Sega of America's 90s management staff kept pushing this fiasco on us back then because it was apparent that Tom Kalinske really was not qualified to be managing a subsidiary branch for a game console other than coming in two years after it launched and cutting prices with force which affected the hardware quality... ultimately the 32X compromised the Sega Saturn as a hardware platform. The Sega Saturn has a super advanced evolution of the Yamaha sound processor which means the Sega Saturn can do super advanced "chip tunes"... further is the ROM Cartridge port which was neutered to avoid confusion between 32X Cartridges and Potential Sega Saturn Cartridges So if 32X never existed do you really believe that the Japanese Project Saturn engineers would still have made the Sega Saturn identical? Nope! It would have been a combo machine for both ROM Cartridge and CD-ROM formats... The pressure and price panic fear mongering came from Tom Kalinske which is where the idea of a Cartridge only "Saturn" was being kicked around because back then the Victor And Sega WonderMega was a $500 dollar combo console in 1994... you cannot force the price of that system down back then unless you removed the quality processors for weak Kalinske minded processor decisions. Thus if any Sonic for Sega Saturn game was made in a world that the 32X never existed, it would have been a ROM Cartridge true next generation game... Keep in mind... actual gamers back then were not dumb... they KNEW PlayStation with Ridge Racer was coming... there were screenshots in late 1994 magazines... 3DO was out and increasing in game quality so only some eight year old who was constantly being punished by first world U.S. parents would be settling for a 32X... anyone with a pulse would be craving for ultimate power even if they didn't afford it... so a $500 dollar Sega Saturn could have been launched... purchased mostly by older gamers like in Japan and eventually even those kids with paper routes would have been breaking windows to make sure they had the $500 needed to buy an uncomproised Sega Saturn hardware
Why would the Japanese development team ADMIT that they were told by Tom Kalinske to stop a project that was being conceptualized and in the early prototype stages that would eventually become a Sega Saturn Sonic Project for 1995 by experienced Sonic CD dev team? It would be EMBARRASSING, you lose face, you basically admit that you were told to take a dive and I am not surprised that many of those original Japanese game team would deny the game being for the Saturn because they KNEW it was a Sonic Saturn game and they were basically stopped from making it by Tom Kalinske himself because he wanted it rushed over (pay attention to Tom Kalinske and even Bernie Stolar as they are a primary reason why many Sega MegaDrive to Genesis games (aka games that would be expected to be immediately released in North America or rather U.S.A.) were shipped in rushed states precisely ahead of or aiming at some holiday season release instead of allowing the Japanese development team to fully finish their game project for world wide release and that happened as soon as Sonic 1 being a game missing elements from the Japanese version... because the U.S. subsidiary brand desperately wanted a title to use for marketing hype instead of allowing the first Sonic game to generate sales and buzz by itself and earn the title of being a great game without being forced to be a pack in title. Another major problem with Sega of America's 90s management staff that they kept forcing too many damn pack in games too soon after the game software was originally released which killed the thunder these games could have developed back then on both Genesis and Sega Saturn....nevermind that the 32X was created by Tom Kalinske and Joe Miller's greedy plans to exploit the Genesis install base. His interview words against the Sega Saturn (note he was complaining about the price of Sega Saturn when it was called "Project Saturn" in 1993 magazines shortly after the official Japanese announcement in business newspapers in Japan on January 1993... thus why Tom Kalinske has always been suspicious about when he first started his uprising and insurrection to make his own side platform while completely refusing to prepare for the next generation hardware transition.... It was higher priced? Yeah remember that Tom Kalinske and even Michael Katz NEVER ACTUALLY LAUNCHED NOR WERE INVOLVED with the Sega MegaDrive launch or Genesis. Michael Katz even admitted he was officially hired AFTER the Sega Genesis launched because that was a problem going on with Sega of America as a subsidiary branch in the 1980s that there was no real stable management staff, it kept switching around... the original Japanese launch price for Sega MegaDrive was ¥21,000 which is roughly around $210 USD back then in 1988 money plus or minus and Sega of America as a subsidiary branch company was not even ready for launching it in late 1988. The MegaCD launched in Japan in 1991 for ¥50,000 which is a higher price than the years later Sega Saturn launch of ¥44,800 of Sega Saturn in 1994 that only became so because Tom Kalinske kept trying to put pressure on the Japanese headquarters to not make the Sega Saturn have more expensive parts even though back then "Sega" had way more competition from brand new high end 3DO which launched in Japan in March 1994 for ¥50,000 so given that 3DO could have built up sales before the Sega Saturn launch (it was actually selling well in Japan at that price and maybe there was less confusion with marketing like in the U.S. where if you actually went to stores, you would see that 3DO wanted to be a better Philips CD-i than anything else... aka tons of edutainment and live action FMV "games" Iirc the CD-i in 1994 was still fairly high priced so it was funny to see the 3DO didn't immediately put an end to it... Next is Nintendo's Project Reality, announcement after the 3DO and Sega Saturn plans and originally aiming for 1995... so it makes you wonder what the hell was Tom Kalinske thinking when Nintendo is not only spanking the Genesis in North America to the point that Kalinske exaggerated Genesis unit sales under sold to retailer numbers while Super Nintendo systems were actually selling out since 1991 from actual retail stores year by year. Then you also had NEC who was unknown if they would come to North America and finally Sony PS-X announcement in November/December 1993... you have all these fully new platforms coming with higher prices but actually bringing full new power and Tom Kalinske and Joe Miller wanted to expand the Genesis??!! This is why Hayao Nakayama San would have never created the thought of the 32X in his mind like Kalinske and Miller originally tried to scapegoat, because even Nakayama San knew that new rivals and new hardware wasn't anything to not take seriously. In the end those Sonic CD members could have developed a prototype Sonic Crackers/Stadium as a design project they were in the concept stage... obviously the logical way to make such a project is to develop it on Sega MegaDrive hardware first (the MegaCD had not sold enough units and Sega Saturn was coming in November 1994 whether Tom Kalinske never gaslight you all into believing he didn't know the January 1993 announcement stated November 1994 as the Saturn launch) and after making the basic outline of the entire game, then those developers can begin the transition into writing the code to the early Sega Saturn dev kits because at that time between 1994 and 1995 it makes no sense for there to exist a build on Sega Saturn at all. Basically Sega of America's 90s staff knew it was a Saturn project, Tom Kalinske intervened... he wanted a last ditch grand stand to lure Genesis suckers erm I mean the install base even if the game shipped in 1995 and in the meantime he was trying to FORCE the early Sega Saturn adopters into only having "Bug!" As a mascot looking game... regardless of Astal being localized and under hyped by Sega of America back then... all blame of not having a Sonic title on Sega Saturn's first year lies with Sega of America's 90s management.
I like gaming lore videos, especially Sonic-related. I'd love to help out with narration if you ever need it someday!
