Theres a glitch, not mentioned here, that I always made an effort to accomplish as a child. I call it the Gold Nugget glitch. I don't know if it works in Sonic3 & Knuckles, but I do know it can be done in Sonic 3. It's pretty simple. At the end of the last act of Launch Base Zone, before you enter the area where you fight Dr. Robotnik for the first time. Have Tails lift Sonic above and behind where Dr. Robotnik appears.(I always made an effort to touch his seat, though I doubt that actually does anything) When the fight starts, Keep Sonic behind Robotnik and use Tails to defeat him. After the battle the game will continue normally, but whenever you take a hit and lose rings, a small golden nugget (or the back of robotnik's seat from that last battle) will also bounce away. I've always tried to keep the "nugget" on me through the end, and I don't know if it really makes a difference, but when I'd beat the game while still holding the "nugget" It would appear in the final screen. As a kid, I felt like I found some super awesome treasure! I didn't know it was a glitch till later. =)

Sounds like the VRAM of the previous boss wasn't properly cleared, leading to rings being overwritten. The "nugget" makes no difference other than comestics.

Blonic not really fair to call a debug mode glitchy. It lets you do anything and override the program, so of course you can cause glitches. It's only meant to be used by the programmers who know what they're doing. (Or they'd even use it to cause glitches so they can try to fix them.) Once you've stepped inside the machine, it's expected that you know what you're doing...

At least on the Origins version of the game, if you time your jump and glide just perfectly at the area right before the mini boss for Angel Island act 1, Knuckles will somehow be able to fight Sonic's version of that mini boss without needing either of the former's super forms
17:50 I was so freaked out the first time this happened, I thought my console was fried. I always considered a glitch the unreachable rings inside a wall in Angel Island Act2 , top of the map, on top of a little room with items (Rings+Bubble+Rings), next to the big waterfall. If you look up you can see three rings and the top of a breakable rock barrier tucked into the wall.
I like how all these people are like 'These games are SO broken!' Note how you intentionally do these glitiches actually try. Every game has glitches every single one no game is perfectly programmed. I'm not hating or whatever, I'm just expressing my thoughts
An old comment I know but yeah, I agree. If an average gamer can easily find glitches and not only are they numerous, but also very easily to pull off by accident like in Sonic 06, that's when a game is truly broken. Otherwise, if you have to do insane things that you wouldn't normally do or come across by accident, then it isn't really 'broken'.

(Even though it's actually just because it doesn't load in the Knuckles section)
1:24 doing this glitch while in act 1 is a bit tricky since it can occasionally bring the death plane upwards but pulling it off successfully allows you to play through all of knuckles act 2. The boss loading trigger doesn't happen but other than that everything works

alot of you probably know (probably from betabytes) that Ice Cap was intended to have sonic running down the mountain but was changed to him snowboarding correct? well if you have sonic get on the snowboard and essentially start the act then use debug mode and exit out then sonic will be running down the mountain normally, or as normal as he can be (his snowboard sprite will still be in effect but will be labeled behind sonic.) but in order to keep it that way the entire time you'll need to make sure to jump over all the parts where sonic will quickly swurve left then right again which will return sonic to a sub par normal state.
sorry this was so long... to sum it up just go into the act give it a few seconds, enter & exit out of debug and make sure to jump over the swurve areas.
The other day I discovered that if you're soloing as Sonic and you jump from Tails early before he sets you down in the beginning of Carnival night he'll land and continuously jump instead of flying away, same thing in Mushroom Hill
11:14 I actually discovered this glitch by accident. I was just going through Marble Garden normally as Super Knuckles, when I accidentally hit a wall and flew through to Sonic's act 2 boss. I also discovered that ALL of Angel Island act 2 is also loaded in act 1. As Sonic, try to use debug mode to go to Knuckles' area. Sonic will die, but use debug mode to go above Sonic's act 1 boss, as the boss cannot load, you can go into the ceiling above the area, then you can glitch through to act 2, which is loaded entirely, cutscenes and everything. Interesting in my opinion.
15:28 I encountered a simlilar glitch, but with knuckles, not Tails. I managed to get him stuck in a messed up sprite mayhem and only got to leave when the counter was a second shy of ten minutes. Unfortunately, I don't remember the specific steps, but the general idea. I was either Super or Hyper Knux (still in Carnival Night) so he couldn't take damage from spikes. At one point in the level, there were spikes, a wall to their right, and a barrel moving up and down against the wall. I made Knuckles glide into the lower corner of the wall where it met with the spikes as the barrel was about to crush me. I was in the wall for a second, then I think I pressed LEFT and then Knux was catapulted to the right and into a similar glitchy area, but just with many lined up platforms with no escape. Once again, I don't remember too much, not even the Act number, but I did want to share it anyway.
I got a glitch in Carnival night where tails was on a barrel and went offscreen, then when he came back on screen, he just stood in midair, no animations playing, until the barrel went back to pick him up again. Best part was I encountered this while playing at night in a dark room.

I don't know if anyone else noticed this, but at 3:26 it looks like sonic was gonna punch knuckles, i know it was just his walking animation, but that's still pretty funny.

In carnival night act 2 after knuckles turns off the lights there is a point before the water with the water shield. more often than not bouncing off that shield monitor will send me flying up around the loop above it and into an inescapable wall clip. that means either a reset or a time over and lost life.

To pull that off, you have to have the level select and debug mode. Enter Knuckles' Sky Sanctuary and beat the boss. Now use debug during the cutscene that plays and when it finishes and the plane goes off screen, go out of it and you will have a red sonic. He will start light blue for a second and then he will be red. Place objects to stay up there since there is no floor.
I just think its so cool that sonic and knuckles section of angel island are not conpletely seperated as different levels but actually in the same location
My kids were watching this today on the TV (remote YT) and I couldn't help but feel nostalgic not just the games but the video format itself. I thought to myself "man this video reminds me of old school UA-cam" checked when it was released and holy moly 8 years ago??
Now that Andy is working on Origins, I wonder if they got his opinion on some of those glitches. Imagine if they hid some sort of bonus for doing some of those glitches, like getting to Knuckles after he drops the bridge or beating Robotnik to the capsule in Hydrocity.
The manual even mentions getting stuck in a wall? Damn, you know it's gonna be good when bugs like that are something they expected players to encounter.
You can also glitch the eggman encounter in sonic's act 1 in launch base by staying far enough to load eggman but far enough to not trigger the eggman's escape. Use tails to hit eggman 256 times and then the boss defeat animations starts, and if you hit him AGAIN the sprite will disapear, will give you 100 points and release an animal
4:22 Actually, the wall disappears as it's technically the background layer being used which the game already has reverted into being a background at that point. Sneaky 16-bit game programmers and using "layer 2" for other uses when the background is obscured by foreground tiles...
In carnival in one of the up down thing if you are super sonic, if you get hit while going up or down in the thing hitting the wall the game will crash.
I've done most of these with Debug Mode but it's neat to hear the science behind it. It actually makes a lot of sense. Even as a kid, I knew the stages were repeated like that but I didn't know the scientific specifics of it.
(0:16) This glitch was patched in Sonic Origins. While the Kunckles cutscene plays, Tails (or 2P) can’t carry Sonic. (or 1P) (1:50) This glitch was patched in Sonic Origins. If Sonic enters Kunckles’ version of the act, the bottom bound will be gone. So, you can basically have a full tour of Kunckles’ route. But there is a way to bypass the bottom bound. In order to do this, you’ll need 20 or more rings so you can enter a bonus stage. Now, if you have debug, spawn a checkpoint, enter and leave it, and it will be gone. (2:14) This glitch was patched in Sonic Orgins. If Kunckles’ enters Sonic’s part of the act, everything will be the same. Even the boss and the airship work. (4:36) This glitch was patched in Sonic Origins. If Super/Hyper Sonic makes it to the boss as quick as he can, the screen lock will happen.
I found a glitch that I dub the 'Ring Sonic' Glitch. First you need to have Debug enabled when you enter Launch Base Act 2. Complete the act as normal until you reach the Big Arms Boss. Ensure that when you are in debug that the ring is selected. Let Eggman grab you while you are in debug with no rings. He can still hurt you in debug in this boss, which is how this glitch works. When you get let go of to let Eggman do other attacks, exit debug mode. You'll notice that Sonic is now a mix of HUD and ring graphics. If you want to continue the fight as 'Ring Sonic', you will want to enter debug mid-death, then exit once more. After that, continue as normal. It works in S3 Complete, so it also works on S3&K. Don't worry, the cutscene and victory don't stop the glitch as those are glitched out, too! Sadly, when you enter Mushroom Hill, Sonic's sprites reload and the glitch is fixed... It was fun while it lasted! I wonder if someone will turn 'Ring Sonic' into an OC like Ashura did in Sonic 2.
Let me explain some of these glitches: 3:53 - Those tiles actually have their pallete dynamically overwritten when you first enter. Why? The tunnel. Notice how it's initially dry? Yea, that water at the start is effectively fake. Marble Garden Boss in Act 1 - MGZ uses the same Dynamic Level Events (DLE, events that occur partway through the level) for both acts. DLEs are what handle boss loading in MGZ at least. Due to this, when you enter the right x-position in MGZ1, the boss will load.
How do people figure out the perfect button timings needed to wrap around the levels? It's a neat trick, but man, it must take a lot of trial and error. Also, I've encountered a few glitches in Sonic 3 (but not Knuckles) myself. Like in Marble Garden Zone, when dealing with the spiked walls that bounce up and down, I've actually gotten killed by the spikes when they were very clearly out of my way. And in Carnival Night Zone, I've been pushed by a spinning barrel into a wall, where I got stuck and had to wait for time to run out.
***** I think for the crazier ones they were most likely discovered by people using emulators that let them slow down the game and camera hacks that let them see where sonic is at all times.

For that hydro city ending glitch where u skip the boss, I managed to do it without super sonic, so u don’t need super sonic

I encountered a simlilar glitch, but with knuckles, not Tails. I managed to get him stuck in a messed up sprite mayhem and only got to leave when the counter was a second shy of ten minutes. Unfortunately, I don't remember the specific steps, but the general idea. I was either Super or Hyper Knux (still in Carnival Night) so he couldn't take damage from spikes. At one point in the level, there were spikes, a wall to their right, and a barrel moving up and down against the wall. I made Knuckles glide into the lower corner of the wall where it met with the spikes as the barrel was about to crush me. I was in the wall for a second, then I think I pressed LEFT and then Knux was catapulted to the right and into a similar glitchy area, but just with many lined up platforms with no escape. Once again, I don't remember too much, not even the Act number, but I did want to share it anyway.

I got a glitch in Carnival night where tails was on a barrel and went offscreen, then when he came back on screen, he just stood in midair, no animations playing, until the barrel went back to pick him up again. Best part was I encountered this while playing at night in a dark room.

In sonic origins' version of 3k, you can reach Sonic's route in angel island act 1 as knuckles because of how the physics are slightly different.

In carnival night act 2 after knuckles turns off the lights there is a point before the water with the water shield. more often than not bouncing off that shield monitor will send me flying up around the loop above it and into an inescapable wall clip. that means either a reset or a time over and lost life.

10:48 as a kid i did this on the Sonic Mega Collection by accident.i think i just happened to get the inputs right. funny thing is, i had no idea it was a glitch, as that wasnt a concept i knew about (i was really young, and unpopular in elementary, so no one told me these things).
Looking at all the button presses and the trail and error, you must go through to find these, i can just picture you raging at your screen, with a few dozen energy drinks at your desk.

To pull that off, you have to have the level select and debug mode. Enter Knuckles' Sky Sanctuary and beat the boss. Now use debug during the cutscene that plays and when it finishes and the plane goes off screen, go out of it and you will have a red sonic. He will start light blue for a second and then he will be red. Place objects to stay up there since there is no floor.

In Sonic 3 alone, if you exit a bonus stage in the burnt half of AIZ 1, Act 2's music will play

You can also glitch the eggman encounter in sonic's act 1 in launch base by staying far enough to load eggman but far enough to not trigger the eggman's escape. Use tails to hit eggman 256 times and then the boss defeat animations starts, and if you hit him AGAIN the sprite will disapear, will give you 100 points and release an animal

In carnival in one of the up down thing if you are super sonic, if you get hit while going up or down in the thing hitting the wall the game will crash.
Your super old videos are being recommended to me, and I'm rewatching them for the first time since I was in elementary school.
I've done most of these with Debug Mode but it's neat to hear the science behind it. It actually makes a lot of sense. Even as a kid, I knew the stages were repeated like that but I didn't know the scientific specifics of it.

(0:16) This glitch was patched in Sonic Origins. While the Kunckles cutscene plays, Tails (or 2P) can’t carry Sonic. (or 1P)
(1:50) This glitch was patched in Sonic Origins. If Sonic enters Kunckles’ version of the act, the bottom bound will be gone. So, you can basically have a full tour of Kunckles’ route. But there is a way to bypass the bottom bound. In order to do this, you’ll need 20 or more rings so you can enter a bonus stage. Now, if you have debug, spawn a checkpoint, enter and leave it, and it will be gone.
(2:14) This glitch was patched in Sonic Orgins. If Kunckles’ enters Sonic’s part of the act, everything will be the same. Even the boss and the airship work.
(4:36) This glitch was patched in Sonic Origins. If Super/Hyper Sonic makes it to the boss as quick as he can, the screen lock will happen.
I found a glitch that I dub the 'Ring Sonic' Glitch.
First you need to have Debug enabled when you enter Launch Base Act 2. Complete the act as normal until you reach the Big Arms Boss. Ensure that when you are in debug that the ring is selected. Let Eggman grab you while you are in debug with no rings. He can still hurt you in debug in this boss, which is how this glitch works. When you get let go of to let Eggman do other attacks, exit debug mode. You'll notice that Sonic is now a mix of HUD and ring graphics. If you want to continue the fight as 'Ring Sonic', you will want to enter debug mid-death, then exit once more. After that, continue as normal. It works in S3 Complete, so it also works on S3&K. Don't worry, the cutscene and victory don't stop the glitch as those are glitched out, too! Sadly, when you enter Mushroom Hill, Sonic's sprites reload and the glitch is fixed... It was fun while it lasted! I wonder if someone will turn 'Ring Sonic' into an OC like Ashura did in Sonic 2.

Let me explain some of these glitches:
3:53 - Those tiles actually have their pallete dynamically overwritten when you first enter. Why? The tunnel. Notice how it's initially dry? Yea, that water at the start is effectively fake.
Marble Garden Boss in Act 1 - MGZ uses the same Dynamic Level Events (DLE, events that occur partway through the level) for both acts. DLEs are what handle boss loading in MGZ at least. Due to this, when you enter the right x-position in MGZ1, the boss will load.
Most of this video is terribly terrifying
How do people figure out the perfect button timings needed to wrap around the levels? It's a neat trick, but man, it must take a lot of trial and error.
Also, I've encountered a few glitches in Sonic 3 (but not Knuckles) myself. Like in Marble Garden Zone, when dealing with the spiked walls that bounce up and down, I've actually gotten killed by the spikes when they were very clearly out of my way. And in Carnival Night Zone, I've been pushed by a spinning barrel into a wall, where I got stuck and had to wait for time to run out.
***** I think for the crazier ones they were most likely discovered by people using emulators that let them slow down the game and camera hacks that let them see where sonic is at all times.
