Mclaughlin is a legend which only borns once every ten years. Came to America from the V8 Supercars series, which is really something else than IndyCar or IMSA. Now he is a 3 three-time IndyCar Grand Prix winner and also a Sebring class winner. Absolutely phenomenon.
He is the perfect example for how flawed the superlicence format is. Indycar is ranked equal to F3, IMSA is ranked below Nascar and Aussie Supercars isn't ranked at all. It's absolutely asinine! Guys like McLaughlin, Van Gisbergen, Waters and Mostert are amongst the world's elite, and their series is basically ignored by the FIA. Absolutely unbelievable
@@wendigockel Actually in some way IndyCar is below f3. A fourth place in f3 gives you 15 points but only 10 in Indycar. V8 supercars is ranked, and first place gives you 15 points. (Which is also a joke, but FIA is a clown.) In another David Land video called "Is IndyCar Undervalued?" at 10:15 Mclaughlin speaks about he has a super license but Colton, who is also young and extremely talented has not.
@@akosschneiderakos3509 In defense of the FIA their super license points are to be eligible to be considered for F1 which is the pinnacle of a single seater, single driver
racing. Races such as Sebring are mutli driver events so are all three at the same level? Jack Aitkin in the overall winning car was a 5th place in F2.
The only real argument is between Indycar and F2 and F3 . The issue for Indycar to me is if you strip out oval races, which I know are important to Indycar but are meaningless to show the skills required to drive around Monaco, there are only 12 events left. In F2 there are 28 including sprints and they are now faster than Indycars. Zak has said that Indycar needs faster cars.
Colton may be talented but he certainly is not maturing as a driver and his performance in 2020/21/22 are 3rd, 5th, 10th. so going the wrong way. His chance has gone.
Its so easy to say the FIA are clowns and the system is wrong. That is what all who fall by the wayside or whose ambition is greater than their ability say. The Fia is their to find the handful of drivers good enough for F1 and they have made their judgement. Perhaps they may look at it again as they do periodically. It is harsh but there are only two or three drives available each year.
@@bjs7442 There are things, in which you have absolutely right. I'm from Hungary (Mid-Europe) and watch F1 since I have been 5. And I think the Sport went in a really bad way in the last 10 years with Netflix, DTS, FIA's incompetence, bad circuits, and even bad races. I just wanted to tell you why I am sometimes too critical.
Now answering your comment. Christian Lundgaard came to IndyCar from f2 and said f2 was tough but Indycar is even harder. Callum Ilott came to IndyCar from f2 and said f2 was tough but Indycar is even harder. Colton's last year was a disaster, that's true, but I think that was mainly because the media put too much weight on him. I don't think Oval is easier because there are only 3 or 4 corners on the track, but okay than calculate the championship points without the 4 ovals for the SuperLicence Points. It's really weird for me to count every f2 race twice. In my opinion, there is 16 Location in IndyCar (Double Weekend IOWA), and only 14 in f2. Is the f2 faster than IndyCar? It's hard to say how much the difference is, both series are 10 percent slower than f1 on road courses. (circa) (Of course on the oval Indy is faster than f1, with a 380km/h top speed) Finally nobody said Sebring and F1 are on the same level, f1 is the top level without a question. I only said Mclaughlin is brilliant. The guy is 29 now, which is too old for an f1 rookie. But I am sure if he would have come to indy at the age of 22-23, he would be an f1 driver now. This guy learns incredibly fast and can adapt to every car.
Have been following endurance on and off for years (mainly Le Mans and Daytona) but this year I'm following the WEC and IMSA seasons in full. What a great time for sportscar racing!
Also shoutout for Scotty Mac for winning in touring cars, open wheelers and now prototypes. If I was Roger I'd be pushing for him to get on a 963 at some point.
Rumor has it that the reason Scott and Josef did the Daytona 24 was so that they had prototype experience to qualify them for either Le Mans or maybe a seat in a Customer 963 next year
@@psychlops924 Bus bros upgraded!!
This is my first time following imsa. I enjoyed the Daytona 24h, but man this race was unreal.
@@WyldStallion-bs9oo europeans cant handle good racing lmao you want politics and drivers complaining about someone making a move
@@WyldStallion-bs9oo You are entitled to your opinion. But in my opinion, you are an idiot.
Welcome!
@@WyldStallion-bs9oo Why did you watch the 12 Hours of Sebring if it’s so bad? Stop watching - and we who love IMSA will keep watching. It’s not that complicated.
@@WyldStallion-bs9oo this is our version, better or worse and I love it. I've been to the wec races at Sebring too, and the excitement isn't there. I love it and appreciate it, but I prefer our IMSA version. Attacking driving standards is a little unfair, as most of the field competes globally. Racing and sport in general is first entertainment and IMSA is very entertaining
My problem with IMSA is what you said at the start. “Just watch the last 30 minutes” I feel like this sentiment can be applied to all IMSA races due to the constant FCY’s bringing everyone together and on the same lap. It really feels as if the previous 12 hours were completely pointless when a 40 second lead gets evaporated and is then followed by 3 back to back overly long SC periods.
Sure, WEC was dominated by Toyota. But I think it showed how much better WEC is ran with utilizing VSC’s.
I disagree. IMSA is more appealing to Americans. The IMSA race was more exciting and fun to watch. The WEC works for its main audience, and IMSA works for its main audience here in the USA.
@@WyldStallion-bs9oo yes. You have to be there. If you go a lap down, or multiple laps down, you need to execute that strategy to take advantage of FCY to give yourself a chance. You still need the speed to win. It's our standards. They've been doing this for 71 years at Sebring. Not like NASCAR started a sportscar series yesterday
The last hour was just the final episode in a 12 part series. You need the first 11 for full context about how we got there. I love watching the old enduros on UA-cam like it is a Netflix series
IMSA race was a lot better than the WEC. The Toyotas were a lap ahead by the 3rd hour of their race…and was basically over from there…that’s not fun to watch either 🤷♂️
@@abledog9462Not really. Teams get 1 lap back at every caution, you know that right? You don't even have to be on the lead lap to have a shot at the end. The Corvette was down multiple laps at one point and then was leading it's class because they kept spamming cautions.
My jaw hit the floor when the leaders wrecked. I just....i had no words. What a race overall
This race was awesome to watch live on IMSA TV. Thanks for your coverage!
This was my first time attending the 12 hours of Sebring. Man, I don’t think I could’ve picked a better race to witness in person. Also, I saw you walking by with a styrofoam cup but forgot to say hi.
David's cup was full of sun screen. 🤣
It was a good race, but honestly, IMSA produces regularly. Glad you could make it. Sebring is wild
SAME! First ever Sebring weekend... that was insane
Thank you for bringing more visibility and detailed analysis to this great sport, David!
Agreed
I'll never forget the first time I went to Sebring for the weekend on the 50th anniversary. I remember some of the races but mostly the girls and the extra curricular activities. Just a fun time.
The fact that an LMP2 car finished on the overall podium especially in today's IMSA is insane. This was the definition of a race of attrition.
It was great to meet you at the track! Made my day!
If you don't love sebring you probably work for Peugeot. So nice to meet you at the main straight bridge!
When I saw them going 3-wide, I knew they didn't have TOO much more time before they took each other out. And again, even with so many full-course cautions, to have so many teams so close after nearly twelve hours of hard racing , is amazing.
Kinda like NASCAR, with all the competition cautions and stages …
This was genuinely my first IMSA race to watch, I didn't watch it all and did miss a good chunk in the middle, I'm waiting for the highlights to release here on UA-cam
David asking questions that really incite answers from the drivers is something I love ❤

I've been following sports car racing since 2008 and this was possibly the best sports car race I've ever seen.
I hate to see a race end like this. When 2/8 GTP finish is not my kind of racing
To answer your first question. I went to bad because the finish is around 3:10 am for western Europe. Did watch the final 3ish hours this morning, HOLY COW!
I watched. It was awesome. So many stories through the field in Endurance Racing.
Yeah I watched it 11 hrs of the race and as soon as it got dark all hell broke loose crashes that u wouldn't think happended poor Seb Cadillac Ganassi the race in his hand great video David
As bad as I felt for the top 3 GTP runners, the #3 Corvette with Garcia at the wheel were to poised to at LEAST finish on the GT podium after charging hard through adversity with the broken shock. Great race, IMSA rarely disappoints 🏁👍🏼
David, love ya, but I would have to agree with MP on this. In fact, I would call this way above even "shit show" standards into Grade-A* Shit Show realm. I was complaining about WEC and IMSA not just #MakeItOut and have all cars (from both leagues) compete in their Triple Crown events (Daytona, Sebring, Le Mans)...And now I see why WEC doesn't want to. While I'd knock WEC for their lack of competition (IMSA nailed it with their a-la-carte style of spec-ish racing), they at least nailed the actual rules for their events.
Also, I guess there's levels to driving talent out there. WEC seemingly has IMSA beat in this regard, because that Acura had no chance to make that pass in that section and it was an unnecessary and dumb move that ruined what would've been a better ending than what we got. Mix the NASCRAP rules with lack of talent/common sense, and you get this trainwreck of an event, with way too many cautions, causing an accordion effect (that VSC would've prevented), which led to more dumb/desperate moves, which ruined the ending of the race.
I'd actually put lower on the totem pole of good Sebring races, imho. And even with Toyota dominance, at least the racing was more professional in the WEC side (and less NASCRAP-laden).
@@WyldStallion-bs9oo Same here. Totally agreed with your comments as well.
Lol. Agree. Except the Acura for absolutely screwed, look at how not only did Jaminet hit the Acura but he was driving in his mirrors so much that he hit the 2 cars in front of him because he was so damn careless. Penske driver taking out Andretti driver just like they did the 2 front runners in Indycar at St Pete. Bunch of absolute BS!! (Btw, I am a huge Porsche fan, I have a 911, and huge Porsche motorsports fan and often sport the gear at many racing events, even F1 and Indycar events and was pulling for Porsche to have some success). That’s just not the way you do it!!
David you do a great job. You are getting to be a very good Journalist!!!
This was not my first time watching a IMSA race in person but this definitely was one of my favorite!!! (Almost my favorite but this years Rolex 24 took the top because I got 3 Indycar drivers to sign the same hat after the race)
Glad to meet you at the race and happy you thought this race was as great as I thought it was!! See you next year, David
Ah man I didn't know you were at Sebring I was there too, absolutely amazing weekend of racing, I couldn't believe how many people were there
Those porsches looked terrifying toward the end. Had they not been torpedoed by the acrua theyd have come 1-2. That first hour and last two hours were crrrrrazy to watch. Pfaff back with a win was awesome to watch as well
That race was awesome
The 2021 12 Hours of Sebring got me back in to watching motorsports in a huge way and now I don't miss a race, I couldn't be more woke on IMSA.
I think it was around the 2 hour ish Mark where the commentators said "I'm not gonna pen them out. They can still come back in it" I think it was when they had to serve all those penalties in a row. Then boom they win it
Great race for McLaughlin.
IMSA is the best form of sports car racing
Best form of racing period- in my opinion.
GTP is way more balanced then Hypercar ever will be. At least IMSA got it right and any team can win. This race was a perfect example of it
It helps that all of the gtp’s are lmdh cars an as a result are more spec than the hypercar class. That make it easier to bop. With the lmh cars being far more varied there is a lot more to balance an a much greater chance of making a mistake.
@@rexthewolf3149 You'd think, but it seemed rather clear to me at least that the LMDhs were just off the LMH pace at the 1000 race. The only LMHs that weren't clear of the Porsches and the Caddy were the Peugeots, which were always gonna struggle at Sebring because of their reliance on ground effects, and the two naturally aspirated cars which are frankly never going to compete with hybrids at this rate
Exactly. If you're a manufacturer and you need to convince a board to give you money to build and develop a race car, you want the best chance to compete and it seems so much harder to do in the WEC. IMSA nailed it with DPi and continues that with LMDH
I smell high levels of Copium.
@@tannerrobinson5110 You tell me what's more fun to watch. Toyota running away with a win or multiple teams fighting for the lead
Someone gonna have to do a check On Roger Penske after this one
I like imagining what it would be like if he was active on Twitter
@Able Dog " Roger, both our cars have been taken out of the race"
"Everyone leave the room please"
(Deep inhale) "F!!!"
Ned Flanders:"Dear Lord, that's the loudest profanity I've ever heard"
The last 2 hours turned into a wreck fest. It was like they couldn't get a lap in without someone spinning or smashing into each other and spreading debris like a confetti cannon.
David, check the NASCAR Brazil Sprint Race stream later on, not only they delivered some Bonafide racing for its first run today, but also hinted at many good stuff coming this year, including a Driver participating in one of the races this year.
I wonder why they didn't swapped the engine to the V8??
Very happy for bus bro solo….
0:20 Thank you for telling this. Managed to find the last 33 mins of the race from a channel called PlugMa and man... It was amazing but that move by Jaminet... Bad
The tv coverage was bad with too many commercials, like the Daytona 500. And the race was a boring caution Fest... Ending was crazy, but didn't fix the 50 yellow flags. They need to have slow zones and virtual safety cars like WEC.
WEC and Sebring were best racing this weekend, the racing did not disappoint in terms of action from hour 1 to hour 12/8 for either respective races. IMSA it felt like physical and mechnical issues while WEC was basically dominate cars as expected and questionable strategies by some/mistakes. Yes Ferrari flip and the big one in turn 1 in final 30 mins in IMSA was the highlight. Man it beats out NASCAR in Atlanta (xfinity/trucks were bad Cup was average to okay)
Who doesn't love IMSA racing?
@@WyldStallion-bs9oo Stop living in the past. Driving standards were no different back 2018 and 2019.
@@WyldStallion-bs9oo nothing has changed. Remember when Jorg (2-time LeMans winner) dumped Jan at Leguna hard for the win? This isn't new
Is there anyway to watch the finish of the race? I looked but can't find it anywhere. Not broadcast in Australia anymore so unless it's on UA-cam I think I'm SOL.
Best one I’ve been to in the 7 years I’ve been going.
WEC was good but IMSA was great!!!
Ultimately a blend is needed between the two series in how they handle cautions. I prefer the WEC style as a "traditionalist" but that race could've used 1 or 2 SCs instead of FCYs to get some closer racing for a period of time. The problem with both series is they are too extremist in their approaches. IMSA HAS to get a non-SC FCY procedure going for simple accidents like beached cars, etc. I would guess 50-60% of yellows could and should not be SCs. WEC, as mentioned before could've used one or two SCs. I am in support of a car that had some bad luck getting a fighting chance because of a caution but cannot be all the time. For IMSA, the close competition is not worth the 3+ hours of running under caution we experienced on Saturday.
Another small change to the IMSA procedures that would still give cars a chance but not go too far is allowing the normal SC procedure, but not doing the GTP wave by. Keep the GTPs mixed in throughout LMP3s, LMP2s, etc. and not always the first 8 cars nose to tail.
I wouldn’t say this was the best ever, IMSA has a real LMP3 problem bringing out unnecessary cautions.
People always say that- but give the pro drivers a pass with the cautions they cause.
F1 content creators tell you to watch Indycar. Indycar content creators tell you to watch IMSA.
Everyone saying the race was a shit show because of 1 wreck. Come on man! The majority of the race was really good.
Well it wasn't just one wreck was it? There were like 9 or 10 cautions which were pretty long at times. The LMP3 running into the Porsche GTP during a caution didn't make things better to be honest.
Best IMSA wreckfest ever.
Waltrips old adage cautions breed cautions was so true
They talk about gain everything you can on restarts, that needs to be tempered with we still need to finish
An overly aggressive (he has a history of it) took himself and both Porsche's. Porsche was making for its dismal showing at Daytona. That is until an idiot in a Honda took him out.
By the way the Data Engineer would not make the changes in tire pressure on their own, someone above them told them to do it. Was this the weekend Honda selected the 60 car to take the risk? Along with that di Helio win Indy or was there cheating going on?
Waltrips old adage cautions breed cautions was so true
I think stuff like yellow flags before the finish kinda diminish endurance racing
Great race, but not a fan of the finish. When all the leaders get wrecked last minute it kind of waters down the winner. IMSA really needs to get on board with virtual safety cars/code 60s because the WEC race on the same track with most of the same cars and run the day prior was way better. I feel like if a NASCAR race finished like this we would be foaming at the mouth over how bad it was, but because this isn't NASCAR it gets a pass. I'm willing to call it like I see it regardless. Side note, Scotty Mac is one of the biggest talents of this entire generation. How New Zealand keeps pumping out these amazing race car drivers is insane to witness.
So true. The guy is a wheel man. I hope he comes back for Petite Le Mans.
loved it
Concertina, accordion, same idea.
WORST SEBRING EVER, first was the dirt in the air, that IMSA/NASCAR failed to do anything about. I'm still coughing up dirt. A couple of weeks earlier at a small vintage race they kept the Photo Road watered down properly.
*Concertina effect
It was dope
Fucking Porsche, what a mess he did😂
ACO should just give up and let IMSA run WEC at this point lol. Night and day difference between the two races, as much as people hate on full course yellow bunching up the field, this is the way to go, it's not the 60's anymore and the "r E a L e N d U r A n C e" doesn't exist anymore, modern cars are super reliable, the survival aspect is 100% more interesting in endurance these days IMSA just need to get rid of the lmp3's.
Really hoping Honda get some team to prepare one of those Acura's for Lemans, I don't know how anyone can look at that straight line speed and don't think about seeing these cars in the mulsanne, they would be a threat ( in a world where the ACO wouldn't screw up LMDh teams lol ).
Well depends on what you want to see. I love to see teams using strategies to win races, you don't really see that in IMSA though since cars can get their laps back and pit for free during cautions. This basically leads to nobody taking risks until the last 90% of the race because before that any gap you create will be destroyed by cautions anyways.
The Cadillac nearly got 3rd on their first race in the championship, I don't think the ACO was giving any car bad BoP to be honest.
If you think that was the best Sebring, you must like any race where the fourth or fifth best car wins. I would have enjoyed the race more had the top cars dueled all the way to the checkers.
Entertaining, yes. But a complete shitshow
That race was embarrassing David. Endurance racing should not be demolition derby. WEC showed they are vastly superior.
Agree. Absolutely crap. Jamenet not only takes out the Acura, who then takes out the other Porsche but he is driving in his mirrors so much that he also takes out the 2 GT cars in front of him. Hell, if you can’t race in the dark, then go home!!
@@KosmicHRTRacingTeam you must be drunk, albuquerque was on the gas in the grass/sand and took out the field.
WEC is vastly superior in what way? You don’t know what would have happened if there were a close fight for the win in the WEC race.
@I Kant it wouldn't have been glorified bumper cars that's for sure. That last wreck was absolutely ridiculous.
Plus wec teams are too chicken to race Daytona.
Just watched it. What absolutely Fn trash!!! Does anyone realize that now Penske Drivers get done screwing over front running Andretti drivers in Indycar St. Pete (RoGro and Herta) and now with 18 min left of Sebring Penke freaking punted out another WayneTaylor/Andretti driver? What absolute BS!!!
