Douglas, I don’t think I have ever watched a 1 fish video without being disappointed. This was brilliant!! straight to the point and packed with useful information, no fancy music, and no pointless footage. I must be honest, I only subscribed to you because I am interested in the sea trout. You’re just a joy to watch on everything you do and your channel is not all about you. Your passion for fishing shines through in spades and I wish you all the success mate👏
Appreciate your comments buddy, very humbling. Thanks for your support👍
Such an underrated fish
Thanks for commenting👍
Cracking video Douglas, made me hungry, deffo going to give the Mackerel a try, cheers 👍🎣🎣🎣
Thanks Tony, you won’t be disappointed mate
Wow, delicious. Thanks for explaining how to catch and cook/smoke mackerel.
Thanks Sean, you need to give it a go, it’s so easy and tasty
Good homemade smoker - nice one. I could almost smell and taste the mackerel. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Phil, I did some mods on the smoker, worked a treat and tasted amazing.
Well done m8.
I have memories of fishing with my late father just along the road from where you are, we parked at the wall, we called it the “wall to wall” across from the base.
Great times.
Thanks buddy, I know the place but it gets quite busy there. Thanks for commenting
Brilliant video as always, getting fresh food is so important.
Thanks Andrew for watching. You can’t beat a bit of fresh fish especially cooking it right on the shore, it doesn’t get any better👍
Never fished for mackerel mostly just fish for brown trout seen a boy catching mackerel on the fly at south Queensferry loocked class brilliant chanel
Much appreciated Scott. Mackerel on the fly is fun but I prefer my brown tout more. Tight lines buddy
Near bye the forth bridge/s by any chance Scott ?
@@fishingstevie8830 aye mate it was down there?
@@scottmeikle5117 👍ok u ever see a guy who looks like a pro nearbye railway brig with a rod in hand then thats me 👍

@@PiscatorUK-Fishing Im going to make that little smoke you had where do you get your wood chips? Amazon or something?
@@shuggiemcg1 nice one Shug. Yeah the last chips I got was from Amazon buddy. I use to work in a smoke house and they used beach wood for the salmon and trout.
Absolutely cracking that episode mate. Brilliant 🎣☝️
Cheers Steve for commenting appreciated buddy. Tight lines mate
Douglas you make a very good fishing video's and you take your fishing seriously 👌👍
Thanks Ben, I appreciate your comments and feedback buddy. Thanks for your support
Great video, very helpful with the way you set up and why, have to give it a bash.keep em comming.
Thanks James, very much appreciated buddy. Tight lines
Great vid. Useful, informative, straightforward and easy to watch/listen. Brilliant little smoker, I’ve been looking too hard for an easy smoker and this simple ‘biscuit tin’ is great. I will definitely make one myself and follow your method. Nothing like the taste of fresh mackerel. Thanks for sharing. Keep ‘em coming. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Dan, your comments are very much appreciated buddy. You can’t beat fresh fish, even more satisfying cooking on the shore. Happy smoking and glad to help. Tight lines
Well done Douglas, nothing like fresh Mackerel! 😋
Thanks Richard as always appreciate your comments buddy.
Hi Douglas, new sub, great upload, very informative and interesting. Kind regards Mike.
Hi Mike, thanks for the sub and comments, very much appreciated buddy
Another Excellent informative video Doug, love the cooking too, awesome!! 🤘🏻🎣
Cheers Michael. Tight lines as always bud🎣
I like the clip swivel attachments, I used them a lot years ago but not as much now…. Thanks Douglas
No problem buddy, thanks for commenting. Tight lines
Just discovered your channel and so happy with that video. I'll be making myself a smoker like that for sure.. Well done
Many thanks for commenting Carl happy to help buddy👍
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing I spearfish down here in Cornwall and also get scallops often, so I'll definitely try them in a smoker 😁
@@carlhescornish your just making my mouth water now. Mussels and razor clam also. I lived in Plymouth for 3 years and the summers were just the best time ever down there. I use to spearfish for mullet and bass cooked right on the shore👌
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing yup, I love diving for razor clams, so much fun.. Reckon mussels, clams and scallops in the smoker would be the pinnacle of beach cook ups 😋😁
Really enjoyed that, will certainly try your wee smoking method, looked absolutely delicious, thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks JP, it’s great for the trout too. Tastes so good mate
Good to know they're in, had the grandkids at that very mark last summer..Mackeral weren't there, but kids loved it, and saw a few wee sea trout jumping about. Might head back down the coast at some point soon. Tight Lines, another great wee video.
Thanks for watching and commenting. There’s not great numbers at the moment but I’m sure with more settled weather they will get better🤞tight lines
Lovely package....mouthwatering smoked fish👍
Thanks John appreciate the comment buddy🎣
Absolutely fantastic video I tend to over smoke my Mackrell by mistake try and error leant a lot from your video I think I'll head out to try next weekend I always follow the gannets naturs fishermen defo the way to get kids In to fishing with mackerel what a joy to watch can't beet fresh caught mackerel 👏👏👍
Thanks buddy fantastic comment and feedback, very much appreciated. Happy smoking and fishing🎣
Great video, thanks for posting it! It's good to have someone explain exactly what tackle they use and more importantly how to set it up, and then show how to fillet and smoke your mackerel, and you can't get them any fresher than the one you just caught, smoked and ate! I have a heavy feathering set up but like you I prefer to fish with a lighter spinning outfit, it feels much more sporting! I'm just waiting for reports of the mackerel starting to show where I fish (Which should be quite soon) so I can get out for a few - I don't want to go too early as it's a 200 mile round trip for me. Tight lines my friend!
Amazing comment and feedback Peter very much appreciated buddy. Wow that’s some fishing journey to get some mackerel, I now feel very blessed that I don’t need to travel so far. Thanks for watching and tight lines when you get out there🎣👍
Great little smoker. We had some huge mackerel show up the other day. Plenty of seabirds. Then just like that no seabirds and no fish and its been like that since :)
Thanks for commenting Troj, there’s not many mackerel here just now, reports on catches are very sporadic. 🤞they show up in numbers. Tight lines and all the best buddy🎣
Really interesting. Smoking live. I might try this. I take some youngers out for mackerel, I usually pin them though.. I have opted for poaching them recently, in cider with a bit of dill. Don't boil!
Thanks for commenting buddy, your method of cooking the mackerel sounds tasty, I’ve not tried that. Everyday is a school day. They are such a versatile fish.
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing Cheers for the comment. You smoking looks so simple. I've got loads of beech chippings. Never ever considered it? But I am now and will try it on our annual trip to the West Highlands. Do you remember cod in parsley sauce? It's so easy to make even I can do it, and some of the "lesser" fish poach really well, like Hake and mackerel for example, especially if you add a squeezed lemon. Mackerel poached in cider leaves all the goodness in the fish and it's very simple. As an island, we should be eating more fish. Going to try smoking, going to make a tray for my mess tins cuz you can use the other one as a lid.
Hi you have got me smokin for Macky.
Atb
You won’t be disappointed Berti👍
Great Video and highly informative as usual there Douglas. Love Mackys myself as a chef by trade such an undervalued eating fish. there also very bonny and fight hard on lighter gear.
Thanks for commenting Nic. You know exactly what I’m talking about. Humble little fish that tastes amazing
Great video, I’ve tried fishing there (think you’re pretty much outside my house there haha). Never had any luck but I’m a carp fisherman just learning sea fishing.
Fantastic spot, I lived at the bottom of peaton hill a few years back. Thanks for commenting and tight lines
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing yeah we live at the bottom of Peaton hill :) be good to join you for some pointers if you’re ever over this way again :)
Love Mackerel fishing, they put up a great fight. Top video especially with the cook to compliment the catch.
Out of interest which 11’ spinning rod are you using ? I find it hard to find a spinning rod longer than 10’.
Hello mate, many thanks for commenting, your right not many 11 ft spinning rods about. 10ft will do the job though as long as the weight rating is high enough for the lures or weights. I’ve had this rod for years, it’s a rovex captive and I’ve used it in a few of my videos including the sea trout fishing. It’s not the lightest of rods and I wouldn’t want to be casting it all day but it’s also a good all rounder for light beach fishing.
another good video keep them coming mate are you round near roseneath
Cheers James, yes mate to your? They are not in great numbers yet but it can only get better 🤞
Thanks for the tips on catching and cooking i think id be too presumptuous to take summat to cook a fish on beach lol ,that mackerel didn't look happy when you said you were gonna smoke him . right im gonna keep an eye out for terns and gannets diving around . last time i went fishing there was only a cooperant at side of us got owt he got a huge eel and proceeded to eat it ,im sure he was laughing seriously .you can see what happened on my you tube channel if you like , anyway thanks again , Ant .
Thanks Ant for commenting. I was thinking the same for taking the cooker, I just keep it in the car now. Tight lines and good luck with the channel👍
First class Douglas my son was just asking if there would be any mackerel about I like smoking them using elder
Many thanks William, hopefully you get some mackerel soon mate. Elder is another lovely Smokey flavour. Tight lines too you both
Been terrible out here on Lewis waiting on the Mackies to come in.
Thanks for watching. Yeah there’s not great numbers just now but hopefully they will get better. We just need more settled weather with a bit of sunshine.
You are simply amazing. I just wonder where can I buy this kind of smoker? Can you share a link?
Many thanks. The smoker is DIY, from an old biscuit tin. The portable gas cooker can be purchased almost anywhere
Hi Douglas great video again i have not long came across ur channel are you fishing at clynder area all the time and if so how deep is it there. Many thanks looking to take my grandson to get him started and looking at easier options to start him off i live in erskine so not far to travel i used to use greenock but it way over fished and extremely busy at this time of year.
Hello buddy thanks for watching and commenting. I totally get fishing away from the busy areas which I try to avoid. I am just before Clynder in the last few mackerel videos but do like to try other areas. It’s relatively shallow close in with deeper water further out with a good cast. A bit of advice if you do plan to go there, is to go about 3hrs of the ebb tide down to low water and fish the first 3hrs of the flood tide, that way you don’t need to cast as far to reach deeper water. Rosneath the opposite side of Rhu narrows is also quite good but again can get busy in summer and parking close to the water is very limited. Hope this helps mate, tight lines to you both👍
Thank you so much for the advice Douglas it's very greatfully received I haven't been able to get out this summer as yet obviously due to weather conditions not been great here in the west of Scotland as u will be well aware. Was hoping to try a trip up early morning this week to see how things were and when he stops school for summer take him to a mark which isn't too busy. I used loch long many times and last year around this time it was producing big hoards of macks but weather was completely different very warm. I drove down towards clynder last year but just wasn't sure if it was deep enough for macks tbh but having watched you and seeing what can be done I shall try and see this season at some point. Again many thanks and tight lines to you and look forward to seeing more videos from yourself oh and the smoked mack looks amazing 👏
@@shgers3344 no problem buddy👍
You can't beat fresh mackerel, straight from the sea 🤓
Thanks for watching John. It was a great treat to cook it on the shore, it doesn’t get any better
Do you need a shock leader if you load the reel with 15 lb I always have the knot catching the line on the cast.
Thanks for the questions buddy. I take it you mean 15lb mono? If so you should be ok. If you fish in an area that’s got no possibility of getting snagged up, then fishing light line is ok. The best braid to leader knot to use is the FG knot. Tight lines🎣
Another great video Douglas, what set up did you use?
11ft 60gram spinning rod, 4000 penn battle 2. 40lb Diawa J braid 8strand
@@PiscatorUK-Fishing Think this year my set up will be either my Penn prevail Apex 2 '12 rod and a 5000 DX slammer or a 4500 slammer or Savage gear 2500 and a savagear SGS6 or the 11' Berkley E motion, bought too many rods so excuse to get out and try them! Still no sign of the Mackies further down the Clyde yet
@davymaclean8481 sound like good setups there mate, where do you fish on the Clyde?
@PiscatorUK-Fishing Portencross normally, if your up for doing a video helping out a newbie to fishing I'm your man!
@davymaclean8481 I would have thought definitely mackerel there mate. That’s pretty much the entrance to the Gareloch and loch long.
Ah ha.. you took the tangs off the cooking plate
so you could reverse it.Just did the same on mine on the very same cooker.
I would guess you might be a Fitter or a Mechanic of some grade.
Thanks.
Atb
Thanks for watching Berti. This little cooker comes like that, I didn’t change it. The plate is reversible for storage in the box.
I am new to UK , what area is that ? . I want to try for mackerel in an easier spot to fish . I am an OAP .
Hello Tony thanks for watching. It’s west Scotland near Garelochead.
Where is this?
It’s at the Gareloch west Scotland
doesn't get any fresher than that!
Thanks buddy, it was a real treat for the first mackerel.
I have been down to my usual haunt in north donegal but nothing yet.hopefully they are not far away🎣
🤞they show up soon mate. If we get more settled weather with a wee bit of sunshine the mackerel should follow. Thanks for watching bud
Why dont you use a bigger rod, (ie conti rod) and a bigger reel to cast further and cover more ground ?
Hi Mark, this rod is just a good all round rod for me, not too heavy and can cast 3oz. I know a longer rod and larger reel gets more distance but it’s just not necessary on that particular mark. Thanks for commenting buddy
