    I have a Roland td-20 that I adore but it is so old. So I got a td27 which I thought would do the same thing. Such as being a sound module. But luckily I have my older modules that I have great voices on that I can use for song backups background and such. I pretty much learned how to trick out the td27. I just download recordings of my older modules into the triggers rims by putting the "Song" where the sub instrument would be and selecting Switch instead of mix or fade. That's the only alternative I can think of to lugging around a second module. Also I found out the dual voice capability from the factory settings are okay but my woofers started farting out from specifically the kick and could not be remedied by Ltd or comp. Then I realized my older Roland didn't have dual voices. So I took out the dual voice on one of my factory kits and matched the settings from the older module that did not have dual voices and everything was A-OK. Dual voices have more of a benefit for things like snare and Tom's but the kick was absolutely atrocious until I took out the sub instrument. So heads up people nobody tells ya things anymore. KEEP YOUR OLDER MODULES TD30,TD20. Someone decided they're not needed. However, since Midi modules are no longer included, hold on to your old ones especially if you're a programmer.

      Thanks! Truth be told, I just wanted to try it out! I've used a Roland CY-13R cymbal as a hi-hat in the past but it broke (I think it got cracked in transport) and I've tried an Alesis Strike 14" cymbal as a hi-hat too but that failed (edge switch died). So thought "why not try a Yamaha?" I use 13" hats on my acoustic kit so the size was a good fit and it was cheaper than a Roland.
      I also use an ATV 18" cymbal too!

    What I hate is that I have not really heard any of the modern drum modules that I like the sound of. I have One ddrum2 and Three ddrum4 units. I still prefer these over everything else because they sound like real drums to me, while - for example - the Roland devices I have messed with all sounded really fake to me... like their sounds are targeting rappers, R&B, and dance bands rather than Rock and Metal drummers. (I use my own custom built eDrums.)

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому

      It is a shame that Roland's sound often doesn't cater for what a lot of their audience/market actually want. Do the Mimic Pro or 2box modules not take your fancy, sound-wise? The Mimic's obviously very expensive, but the 2box modules are pretty flexible for their price-range, especially now that the Drumit 5 mk2 and Drumit 3 have better trigger compatibility.

      I get that they are aiming at what will garner them the most sales, I guess - but I would think most rappers are just going to be programming with a PC. The only rappers I ever knew, all had those Mac-mini computers, and they did everything in the computer using Logic Pro recording software and a little keyboard with little finger/drum pads built in so they could tap in beat.
      So, It makes me wonder what drumming genre are they targeting since they don't really sound like drums, but dance drum samples.
      I don;t see the point in buying the 2Box gear, since that is essentially ddrum under a different name - I already have that, and it doesn't do anything that I need.
      I guess the reality is, I just don't see a need to buy a newer unit, since their sounds do nothing for me.
      I mean, I don't even change sounds- I came up with "my sound" and that is what I use all the time.

    • @mattdrewdrums
      @mattdrewdrums 4 роки тому +1

      It really makes no sense at all. People in genres like rap and electronic music aren't going to invest in some giant drum set. A drum pad or keyboard is more than sufficient for them. The only people that invest in a giant electronic device resembling a drum set are...drummers. So, why their first priorety wouldn't be to emulate acoustic drums is beyond me. I'm sure literally no one uses those bull shit electronic sounds on their modules.

    • @tbnterprises
      @tbnterprises 4 роки тому

      @@mattdrewdrums Most rappers and rap/Techno/EDM producers that I've known would have no use for this - they all use PC's (normally a Mac Mini) and software synths.
      A drummer would actually be the only one who would buy something like this.

    Great video! I just upgraded from TD15 to TD27 but are having a big problem with my Kaptor triggers on my pedals. On the TD15 I used the kick jack into one trigger and aux onto the other with no problems using superior drummer3. But now I can´t get the same sound from the trigger connected to aux1 as the one connected to the kick cable even if i use the same settings on the module on both. Is the problem that aux1 output is stereo and I´m using a mono cable? because the dedicated kick cable is mono.

    Hey Luke if you could please help! l have a roland tm6 pro module and all roland rt triggers. As you know it has 6 inputs and l want to add at least 2 extra pads. l have connected a pd8 with a cable splitter with my first floor tom to input 5 on the module as the instructions say to, but when l hit the pad or tom l get both the tom sound and the cowbell together ( l want a e cowbell) l want only the cowbell on the pad, and only the tom sound on the floor tom of course, it is a 2 zone pad. And if l may also mention when l do a crossstick on the snare it is very loud! l have tried lowering the volume in trigger mode but it just lowers the volume of both head and rim. Thankyou so much for any help you might send me.

    So the TD4KP brain is ok but it only stores 25 drum kits.. Does anyone know what is the smallest+lightest Brain(Drum module) Roland makes, that has MORE than 25 kits that can stored to memory and also has drum sounds where you can tweak every aspect of the sound.. (pitch, resonance, reverb, etc) Have they come out with anything since the TD4KP that fits this description??

    In regards to scan time what’s your opinion on acceptable latency? For example I don’t start getting good consistent results until around 3.5 ms on the scan time. It seems to work for me although it’s advised to keep it as low as possible to reduce any latency that could occur, But I’m not noticing any delay or latency. I’m not noticing any difference between 2.0 ms and 3.5 ms. I’m not sure if I should compromise and set the Scan Time lower to a general acceptable setting. One that gives me lower latency as well as good Scan Time. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Can you recommend me a modular model of a module that I could purchase separate pieces for? I'd like to start with just snare, hat and kick. I'm not sure which snare, hat and kick I want yet, but I figure it'd be better to start at the module. I would like it to work with MIDI, (through USB) and through my DAW. I'd like it to also be very accurate with the sensitivity. I think that I'd like to spend about $600 on the module itself; however, I'd gladly pay a couple hundred more if there's a considerable reason to do so.

    I have a yamaha dtx 502 is the strike module worth the upgrade? Also will I have pad compatibility issues?

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  2 роки тому

      I can't say for sure having not used the pads that the 502 comes with, but I would imagine that you might struggle with them based on my experience of dialling in pads on the Alesis. If the 502 has Yamaha 3 zone cymbals, they won't be 3 zone on the Strike and if it has the 3 zone cross-stick/rimshot pad for the snare I don't know how well that will perform either.

      @drgonzlegnd 2 роки тому

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop I have a a to e kit i built myself, snare drum only works on the head currently cause the module wont do dual piezo, im just wondering if the triggering parameters are vastly superior i get so little dynamic range from the module its crazy.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  2 роки тому

      @@drgonzlegnd Ahh right, ok. It's gonna be hard to say to be honest because it depends on the build of your trigger. The Strike doesn't have as many trigger parameters as I'd like (I did a video about my first time with the module recently), so I'm not too sure if it would help.
      The one thing I do know about Yamaha's trigger engine is that it prefers pads with lower outputs (like Yamaha's own pads) and many people who try Roland pads on Yamaha modules find that they output too "hot" for the Yamaha module which gives them bad dynamic range as it's constantly overloaded. Sounds like your trigger would be more suited to something that is happier with hotter signals.
      The Strike does usually do better with "Roland style" trigger setups, but I don't know if it would solve all of the issues because of its limited settings for dialling things in. I was struggling to get some of my converted drums to work well on the Strike because it doesn't have certain settings that would be useful for better triggering (like scan time, mask time etc). It might work out, or you might be swapping one set of problems for another. I can't really offer much more than that though, unfortunately.
