    Great comparison. Might be worth pointing out that the direct outs on the TD-50 are balanced.

  • @3rdGen-Media
    @3rdGen-Media Рік тому +3

    The TD-50 has 10 balanced outs vs 4 unbalanced outs on the TD-27. This is the top of the list deciding factor for anyone that wishes to feed their DAW through an external interface's inputs and A/D conversion as if each piece on the kit were individually mic'd. The TD-50 really should have 16 outs for its flagship tenure to match 16 channel interfaces. I wouldn't be surprised if the TD-50 has a higher fidelity conversion path for its outputs (the architecture of which would actually be helpful to know). Moreover if you do decide to go with a TD-27 (or a TM-6 Pro) preamplification will be required for each unbalanced Roland module output feeding your balanced interface input. I wouldn't trust either module to mix drums down to stereo and expect them to sit well within a mix. Roland could theoretically update their firmware to allow custom routing to L/R phone channels to expose two additional outs (albeit unbalanced -10 dB output) on any module if they wanted to be kind.

A few months ago I became the proud owner of a TD-17KVX2 kit and while I am immensely enjoying what the TD-17 module has to offer, I am eventually going to upgrade to a higher end module and your comparison details a lot of things I most likely wouldn't have considered or thought of. As a power user/owner of the Pearl Mimic Pro, I think it's still one of the Top 3 modules you can buy for the money. It's a premium product with premium studio features and sounds, but glad to see Roland put more emphasis and redesign of the transient and sound designer workflow on the TD-27... it reminds me of the Mimic's! I think the value add of the TD-27 as well is that you get some of those kitchy electronic sounds and kits that sometimes become useful in a live settings, whereas the Mimic you'll have to seriously sound-shape kit pieces or load in WAV samples. I am thinking that if I can get a gently used TD-27 at a good price it'll be a nice supplement to the Mimic, especially for live gigs. I do appreciate the cable snake for live use, it makes setup just a tad breezier. I think if you take care of your equipment the cable snake should have no real failures over its lifetime.

    Another great video! Love hearing and learning about all the functionality of these modules. For me the TD27 is right in a sweet spot for experience drummers who just want killer sounds with enough tweaking options to appeal to the part of a drummers brain that wants to dial in “their” sound. It seems almost like a TD-50 lite. Makes me wish Pearl would bring out a lite version of the mimic. Now that would be interesting. The channel rocks!

    Damn! I am a stickler for obsessive detail and comprehensive analysis of all important and subtle considerations, and you sir exceeded even my own lofty standards. Crammed an F ton into this video. Bet it was a good bit of work to be able to get the message refined to quickly and concisely rifle through all of the points so well.
    Anyway, I just picked up a TD27 kit and was already planning to buy your presets, but this would have easily sold me to support you and do that if I happened to be on the fence. Am getting back into drum after a 12 year break and focusing just on guitar. Found your channel were quickly and easily once I started looking, so you are definitely doing a great job with your efforts.

    Hey, really helpful comparison. With the TD50X out now with more sounds plus the option of adding extra third party sounds - like yours - this is going to be my drum module. Being able to give the dry sound to the FOH on more than just 4 mono outputs is really key to getting the band and the venue appreciated e-drums. Rock on!

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  2 роки тому

      Yeah, the 50X is completely different so the sound comparisons are a bit out of date on this video now. There are more advantages for using the 50X live now, so if you want those extra direct outputs, it's well worth going for the 50X over the 27!

  • @mb480

    I got a TD-27 for home recording and practicing. The sounds are great, especially the sounds from third party creators, though there's 3 or 4 Roland kits that I enjoy that I've customized. What I mostly love about the TD-27 is that I can get those 28 channels for recording and don't have to take up more space with a bigger console. There's so much to love about it, and I think for the price, the TD-27 is hard to beat with all the possibilities. I wouldn't even consider at TD-50 unless I was a professional drummer. The difference in sound is minute, once you add compression, eq, other effects, and mix it, you can't tell.

      I suppose it depends on your usage. I used them quite often live, depending on the venue/PA. I also find them useful for quick volume edits when recording the master outputs for videos (I don't bother multi-tracking as I'm usually trying to show exactly what you'd hear in the master outputs or headphones). I can see why that wouldn't be important to everyone.

    Very informative. I would definitely recommend using a digital mixer if you are using the TD27 for live shows, I learned this the hard way unfortunately but then I got the Behringer X32 and it was truly a game changer! I assume the same applies for the TD50. Makes me a little nervous when you say the TD50 is better for live events but I understand what you mean; being able to add more depth to your sound on the TD50 is an important factor which I was able to hear clearly in this demonstration. Thanks again! 👍👍

I can adjust my In-ear monitors, my drum monitor and the module itself each have their own customized effects. Especially when you have other players it's really nice to be able to have assigned editing slots for each player if that makes sense ..

    Hey man. Great info. Thank you for that! Quick question. I'm looking into getting a Roland acoustic kit for my church and for recording. I'm not too concerned with the TD 27 serving as a midi controller for recording. But I am curious as to just HOW big the difference is in sound quality between the 27 and the 50 while playing live. If you could shine just a little light on that it would be very appreciated. Cheers! B)

    Complete, well organized, no dilly dally. It moved along well! A little to well when the TD-17 and other came in the conversation but the overall points of difference. I find it fascinating there is little discussion regarding the sound of Cymbals as that sound replication and variations seem more complex and where e-sets seem to falter especially when the fake ones cost more than real ones

    Hi! I absolutely love your videos! Your depth of knowledge and understanding of these modules is really unmatched on UA-cam. You are a great teacher, sir.
    I want to ask if you could tell me whether or not the TD-27 has a certain capability. On the TD-50 that I own, I am able to produce a very nice gated reverb effect simply by choosing an instrument and diminishing decay to basically 0, Then going to the ambience section-room, reverb, enhance, etc., and turning all ambience off. Then I choose reverb Hall1 and bring Hall 1 pre delay and/or time down to 0.2 sec. Then I crank up Send Level for the instrument I’m editing. This produces a great Phil Collins and Power Station gated reverb which I have a lot of fun with. So I wanted to ask if the TD-27 has the same capability? I know that in the video you said both modules are basically matched in the effects section, but I wanted to make sure.
    Thanks so much! And thanks for the incredible work you do for us!

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop

      Hey! Sorry for the wait. Yeah, you can do this on the TD-27 too. The 27 doesn't have the exact same ambience setup as the original TD-50 (the 50X is closer to the 27), but since you're only using 1 reverb for this, it will work on the 27 no problem. Thanks for the kind words!

    What are your opinions on the leap of quality from the TD-17 and the TD-27? Compression is a big deal for me so I like the idea of having it on the TD-27. Is their also a leap in triggering/latency? And do you find it can cut the mix a lot better?

    • @fartpooboxohyeah8611
      @fartpooboxohyeah8611 2 роки тому

      The TD-17 uses the same sound engine and to my ears, and many people, sounds just as good as both the TD-17 and TD-50, if not better. The limitations of the TD-17 are less tweak-ability (but still plenty) and the biggie (for me) is only stereo outs, which really limits the ability to mix the drums in a song if you want to use the onboard sounds (which I like to do). I have the TD-17 and really like the sounds, but will be upgrading to either the TD-27 or Alesis Strike Module, which sounds awesome.

    Hey man, thanks for the video. I have a question for you. I often record my drum covers by connecting my spotify by bluetooth to the td 27 module and then playing along over top of it. Then exporting it all afterwards to the sd before tranferring sd files to the computer. Every now and then, I'll get a cut out from the bluetooth, messing up perfect takes. I read in the manual i can connect to mix in via my usbC output from my phone to the quarter inch mix in jack. I did that, but the sound from my phone doesnt seem to come out of the headphones like the td 27 sounds do. If i download the driver and use a production program like you did in this video, will that enable me to hear the spotify through the mix in as well as the td 27 drums so i am able to record without bluetooth, but instead, directly?

    Had both at one point, both pack more features than most would ever need but the TD27 is a lot of value for the price. Today's flagship is tomorrow's mid range.
    And with the ATV and Roland 18" rides being almost the same price, this really gives you no reason not to at least try a Digital ride.
    Digital snares on the other hand are quite pricey but I love it too much not to justify it, but I did pick one up for $350 used!!

    Thank you for your review. Regarding the functionality, could you combine an interface (i.e. roland studio capture) with the td-27 to match the td-50's # of ins/outs, etc.? I ask because in terms of price, td-27 + a roland studio-capture is cheaper than td-50 alone, so I wasn't sure if td-27 + an interface can match the functionality + flexibility of td-50 (outside of needing to use 2 machines instead of 1 which would be td-50's benefit for that extra price).

      Thanks! The differences between the 27 and 50X are a bit more pronounced that the original 50, for sure. In the X, there are now more sounds, more channels over USB as you say, better transient features, better master EQ and compression features, improvements to the sample imports, the coach features have been brought inline with the 27 and a good few other improvements. So there is much more reason to opt for the 50X if you have the budget and think you will use the features. However, the 27 is still very solid and can do a lot for its mid range price tag.

    At 07:55 he says"... the punch and clarity of the TD 50's certainly desirable but not essential..." I think that's probably true if you are playing at home or in a less than formal situation, less set up for sure but in a pro studio session or an important gig I would go for the punch and clarity and the individual balanced direct outs over a stereo out. The TD 27 does sound decent especially for the money but can the instruments be recorded separately thru a mixer ( latency)? Can recording or performing using MIDI out be an option with the TD 27? Then dialing in more punch and clarity thru the mixer keeping the signal in the digital realm rather than converting to analog? I'm trying to decide which to buy.

    A lot of the features that TD-27 has that the TD-50 didn't got sorted via the TD-50X software upgrade. Of course that Bluetooth isn't one of them, and that is still missing from the TD-50X. Worth pointing out that if you upgraded a TD-50 to the TD-50X, or if you bought a new TD-50X, the hardware features are exactly the same, with the exception of some cosmetics.

      If you're just triggering a VST and don't need the physical outputs, I'd go for the 27 personally. They both trigger MIDI as well as each other and both have either MIDI out ports or USB MIDI. The only real downside is fewer trigger inputs, but the 50 is a big jump in price for 2 extra inputs!

    Would you make a video on how to record a TD-27 using Logic Pro (latest) by a band wanting to record their original music - with & without Superior Drummer 3. Unfortunately I don't own Logic, a Mac or Superior Drummer 3 in order to make this a reality, sorry. As far as the advantages of the direct outs for recording - this is something you might want to do if you're dead set on using the module's sounds but you also need or want the ability to process them in the DAW afterwards.
      You can use a USB connection to send the same routing (10 channels total) without having to bother hooking up 8 cables to an interface if you use the full Roland driver with the module in VENDOR mode. Using either method though, USB or physical outputs, will get you the same results sonically. Hope that helps in some way.

      I haven't used the TD-30 (besides a quick play in a shop years ago), so can't really say. Just purchased and set up the td-27kv2. Bit stumped... According to your video (11:40) we should be able to assign any drum to any mono output. However, in reality, though our module screen looks the same as yours, we are only getting stereo left and right of all instruments, plus two assignable channels. The screen says one thing, but the output in reality is different.
    Have you any ideas why this is happening? Why would Roland allow the option of assigning drums to different outputs, including the left and right, if we can't use them that way?

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Рік тому

      Hey! If you go to SYSTEM > OUTPUT > ROUTING, there is an option called "Master Out". By default this is set to "Normal" which has the Master outputs paired together to be used as a full mix of everything with the master effects applied. If you swap this to "Direct" it turns the master outputs into two more direct outputs instead, giving you 4 assignable mono outputs that bypass the master effects (like the other direct outputs). That is the mode I'm using in the be video which is why the master channels are labelled "Master Direct".
      You can then choose to configure these how you like from the PAD DIR and OTHER DIR tabs. There is more information about these functions in the TD-27 Data List manual that you can download from Roland's website. I hope that helps!

      To be honest, I've not used the TD-25 much at all other than a short play test a long time ago. From the audio examples I've heard, the TD-27 is more expressive but the 25 maybe sounds a bit more "produced" out of the box with some quite punchy sounds. So the 27 has quite a different character, but I think there's probably a lot more that can be done with it than the 25 due to its extra features and sample imports. But definitely listen to as many examples as you can to determine yourself or try one if possible!

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Рік тому

      The TD-27 should meet your needs for SD, for sure. You get the same number of inputs whether you use the digital pads or not - they're an either/or input for that instrument "channel" rather than an extra input. So you can have 12 pads - kick, snare, toms 1-3, hi-hat, ride, crash 1&2, and aux 1-3 inputs on the TD-27.
      With the right kind of splitter cable, you can split pads to add more (using the rim zone of the split pads for another sound). You'll have to configure those sounds manually and the pads will only be single zone without cymbal chokes.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  2 роки тому +1

      It depends on the model, there are multiple configurations for the TD-50 lineup. Yes, the digital snare and ride are the same across all TD-27/50 kits, but the newer version (TD-50KV2) is pretty different. The module is the newer updated TD-50X, so the comparisons on this video don't fully apply to the 50X as it has new sounds and other features. It also has the new digital hi-hat, the newer thin crash cymbals, different toms (2x PD-108, 2x PD-128), different kick and different rack compared to the TD-27KV.
      The older models of the TD-50, the KV and KVX, are closer to the 27KV but the tom pads are still higher end (the 108 and 128, compared to 3x PD-100 on the 27KV), the hi-hats are higher end (VH-13 compared to the VH-10 on the 27KV), the kick is different on each and the crash cymbals are larger.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  2 роки тому

      Do you mean straight swap the modules? So running the TD-25's pads with a TD-50 module? If so then yes, but you will need a new cable loom with separate jacks as the TD-50 has individual inputs whereas the 25 has a cable snake with DB25 connector. The TD-50 doesn't come with its own cable loom.
      One of the big benefits of a TD-50 is the digital pads though so I would definitely try and get a bundle with the pads too, moving the snare and ride from the 25 to other inputs if you can.

    I have an old TD-10 with 10 and 14" pads. It makes such a difference in playing with a larger surface. For the price we have to pay for this setup without hardware, Roland is really not doing much for their customers over the past twenty years aside from better sensitivity and realism of sounds. Also, the TD 10 had 1/4" inputs for each pad instead of this bundled snake multi pin input garbage that if one wire fails the whole snake needs to be replaced. So I need to pay $6k to have independent inputs and outputs?
    I recently pulled out my old TD 10s after 10 yrs in storage and these puppies still function well even without the new Vcymbals and HH. I do acknowledge the built-in technology challenges of the kit compared to today. However, it seems like what Roland is billing as new and innovative is nothing more than what they already had in the older models but probably just tweaked a bit better sampling and modeling features I would hope. The ambiance, rooms, fx, and compression features are all 20 yr old features.
    So, please tell me the main differences after twenty years that that is worth spending the money on and apparently not having some basic amenities that I mentioned above. I want to upgrade the pads and HH. Are the new pads that much better than twenty years ago in design and function? I will be soon talking with a Sweetwater rep about this topic, so anything you can educate me about in advance would be appreciated. I get the interface features are important now as well. Is there another Roland alternative I do not want to go to another brand like Yamaha since I know the Roland language, menus, and modeling features very well by now? Any other Roland alternatives you may suggest at the TD 27 price point?
    What about the layering features, and backing track features? Are they user-friendly? I still am attempting to learn the DAW recording and sampling technology which I am finding rather frustrating at the age of 60 :). Thank you for your videos and look forward to your reply.

      There's a certain "roundness" to the TD-27 variations of the 50's sounds, definitely. The 50 is a bit more wild and cutting, but there's definitely an appeal to the 27's approach! Yeah, the hi-hat issue is a bit concerning - I've personally not experienced it when testing with my FD-7 pedal and I mostly run the 27 over MIDI from the 50. I hear the bulk of the issues are found with VH-10/11 setups. Hopefully it gets acknowledged and sorted soon.

    I had a thought. So, roland is distancing themselves quite a lot from their "TD" brand, to "VAD". This wasn't a coincidence. To illustrate my point we first need to establish that roland just released an entire new line of high end, rack/pad kits with the 50K2's. So, they're obviously still investing in a market that craves that kind of classic setup.
    The VAD line however, caters to another market. I think Roland should lean into that. By that i mean, make an entirely different range of modules for VAD kits. Use the same pads and technology, by all means - but make a VST like module for the VAD series. Keep the racks and the editing for those that crave that. Separate it and keep the (what Roland wants you to believe) "legendary" TD editing capabilities. Make a propper drum module for your propper drum shells.
    Roland is happy, they get to keep that proud legacy of, in my opinion fun sound modules for pop/electronic music, but otherwise extremely unsatisfactory, and they get to pull out another module that competes with where everyone else is going - which doesn't infringe on their legacy (what i think is very important to Roland).
    I simply do not believe that it is possible to create a module that pleases both camps unless it simply has full blown VST samples that can't be edited - next to ones that can. And i don't think that's acceptable for them. There will be latency differences, it requires a lot of processing power you may or may not use. It's not gonna be optimal.
    Think it's a good idea? Too much RND? Too much effort from Roland? Big ship moves mucho slowly. Maybe they're more nimble than their greedy antics of yore would have us believe...

    Great video. I'm glad I bought the TD-50 now even though I've left it up to you and a few others to design the drum kits I'm using. Ease of use is the only big advantage I can see for me with the TD-27. But the fact is once the quarantine is lifted most of the venues I'll be playing will want separate/balanced outputs. And other than the third usb input I use every other input on the module.
    On a slightly different tangent I have a couple of questions. Is it practical to use two modules for live shows and how difficult is it? I don't mean adding a TD-27 module to my TD-50 kit. That would be redundant. But a Mimic so I could take advantage of the more realistic sounding kits while maintaining the advantage of the digital snare, ride and positional sensing.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Robyn! Yeah, if you need the outputs, there's no getting around it - the TD-50 is the choice! It's still a very solid module either way, I don't want to downplay how much I've enjoyed using it over the years.
      Hmm, I suppose if you've had chance to test it all out beforehand, it's reasonably practice/easy but it'll depend on exactly how you want it all set up. With more gear, especially if it's all interacting, there's always the potential of more failure points to try and manage. If you were thinking of using the TD-50 entirely for sending MIDI into the Mimic, for example, if something happens to that MIDI connection then that's all the sound gone and the triggers are all hooked up into the module that's not producing the sounds. You also can't get all of the benefits of the digital pads from the Mimic (I've covered that in a video or two already if you want to know more). If you set up a way of quickly swapping to the TD-50's outputs in that scenario then that's probably enough to cover it.
      On the flip side, if you're just running them both side by side (some pads into one, some into another), there's at least always some useable parts hooked up to each module. I used to run triggers into my SPD-SX that would then be sent via MIDI to an Octapad to allow me to hook up more external pads, but the "failsafe" there was that the sounds were still accessible via the Octapad's face pads if something happened. There is always the chance of a single module/setup going awry too, I suppose. So it's about working out where any potential problems might lie and accounting for them ahead of time, really. If it seems like there'd be too many things to reasonably manage during a live performance then maybe it's better sticking to one. If it seems like it wouldn't be too bad and the pros outweigh the cons then it's doable. Bit long winded but hope that helps haha!

On default kits there is almost no difference between the middle position and max position. On my own kits where I assigned big reverb for ballads or gated reverb for 80s fun I have to turn the knob all the way to the max to get noticeable effect. It's kinda disappointing. I know it's probably due to it trying to emulate realism but why do that on an electronic kit? Even in studio if you want you can crank the room/overheads way up. If you check out the video I did for my HUGE 'N' HEAVY collection for the 17, I did a demo at the end showing off the differences with the ambience at min, max and just past the middle and it's quite dramatic on the "big room" kits I made.

      Hey! At 2:30 I think I was just playing something improvised that was meant to be a little bit similar to some ideas from a section of a Dave Matthews Band song (because I was playing the Beauford kit).

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop right on! Do you have any extra hi hat foot controllers or hi hat geodrums for sale? I have an Alesis dm8 pro and I absolutely expanded to a triggera china, 135hh yamaha as my hi hat, strike 14’, and upgraded my regular tom heads to mesh heads I made myself with old tom hoops and needle and mesh. Wish I could post a picture but my kits hi hat separate controller is the weakest link. Its garbage lol. Thanks if not though.

    I see you are using a Yamaha hi hat with a Roland module. Are they naturally compatible or did you do something to make it work?

      Hi Mark. I replied on another post but I'll paste it here for others to see too -
      It's actually just a Yamaha cymbal pad with a Roland or Goedrum controller. More on it here -

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop I'm curious about this as well: do you prefer this Yamaha HH compared to the VH-10? I'd like to know because I'm choosing between a DTX8KM and a TD-27KV and I can't decide hahaha

    I have a TD17 and a TD27 module and what the TD27 makes up in functionality is surely loses in the quality of onboard sounds.
    The sounds are horrible, specifically the snare sounds and also, the lack of sounds is also a real issue.
    The quality of the TD17 sounds is far superior to that of the TD27, in my opinion at least.
    If the TD27 had the same quantity and quality sounds as the TD17 it might be the better alternative to the TD50.

    Is TD 30 still any good ?

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  3 роки тому +1

      I've not had much experience with the TD-30, but many people still really like the module. Some prefer it over the newer generation's sound character. It's also got flagship features on its side, which is a bonus. Personally, if I was to purchase one, it would need to be at a good price versus what's available now as it's getting pretty old.

    Just got my td-50 and upgraded to the X version. For some reason the digital hi hat just plays better on the 50 compared to the 27. Also the PDX-100 suck on both modules, lol

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  2 роки тому

      Hope you enjoy the 50X! The TD-50X has updated samples that are optimised for the VH-14D and also have positional sensing enabled. The 27 doesn't, it just has "compatibility" with the VH-14D, so that's probably a large part of it!

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop Sorry Luke, I meant to say in terms of foot control. I've just started being taught on how to use the hi-hat pedal and on the TD-27, it's like you have to raise slightly earlier (my technique for the open sound is to hit and raise foot rather than hit when open. Feels more natural to me) and have more tension on the stand compared to an acoustic kit. In the trigger monitor screen it does show the positional hits thou. On the 50x, it just works for me anyway. Would be nice for a second opinion on this.
      The eDW house kit on the 50x compared to the 27 is on a different level, miles better, so much clarity.

      I just bought a Novation launch control xl to control the individual drum volumes, ( in my Vst ) this was my one refinement left to do, as while playing an e-kit it was very difficult to control hi-hat volumes in relation to the rest of the kit on the fly using a mouse.
