I just gotta say, Thank you Russ from Retro Game Corps for introducing me to the Nerd Nest Podcast and thus introducing me to you Bill and this amazing channel. Your channel is now one of my favorites to watch and learn from and the Podcast too
This 1000% I'm not even looking at another handheld unless the controls are as symmetrical and comfortable as the steamdeck layout. even for controllers I'm using the stadia controllers for now until Valve drops the Steam controller 2 🤞
I refuse to play my PC games on my actual PC if I'm not streaming it to my deck just because it's so much better. Plus I'm used to having touch pads and 4 back buttons now.
Steam Input also offers a small feature that a lot of people probably missed and I don't blame them. It's Anti-Deadzone Buffer. The issue it solves is that a lot of old games like the ones for PS2 have artificial deadzone around 20% of the whole stick movement. That is especially noticeable in racing games, but with anti-deadzone buffer you can basically remove that deadzone entirely. Absolute game changer for me! Try it for yourself and you will be amazed.
Too bad they no longer sell the Steam Controller. Although it isn't perfect; it's great as a keyboard/mouse replacement using Steam Input, but it kinda sucks as a regular controller as it is quite awkward (especially with smaller hands) to use the A/B/X/Y buttons on it. They're just too far left/down from the natural resting place of your thumb, since that's where they put the large circular touchpad.
Best thing I did was first switch my Wifi over to the 5G channel, then in Developer mode disable Wifi power management, and now my downloads to the SSD are lightning fast.
I might have to check that…I’ve been happy with the performance all medium and high with grass set to almost 30%….almost 50 hours and started on the 64gb lcd model and continued from the 1tb OLED and performance, and loading even from sd has been pretty negligible so far.
Hi Bill, I just want to let you know, I know most of this stuff, but I keep listening while I'm doing the dishes because the blend of your voice with the background music is so relaxing. Thank you.
the VRAM/UMA Frame Buffer setting is the "Minimum" allocated on boot, linux and the steam deck can dynamically allocate more if it needs it and more ram is available, you dont need to mess with that unless you have a specific game where the ram is being eaten by the cpu/game leaving too little for your gfx allocation. Typically only windoze users need to worry about that setting.
I think my favorite moment using steam input was when I made clockwise motion or counter clockwise motion on the trackpad control the camera zoom on Valheim. It was a small addition, but a huge victory for me
I know Bill has mentioned not caring too much or not using his points in the past but casually flexing 200,000 points is hilarious (tbh I wish we could do more with them)
@@NerdNest 🤣 It's a good amount lol. I don't remember how many I got with my steamdeck, but it's 100 points for every $1 you spend. so not sure if it's from the multiple decks you've gotten or just from the games you've purchased for yourself or the channel. but you are 2x my amount and I've only bought like 10 things with them so far (I don't change my profile much lol)
I’ve been playing the shit out of the neo geo pocket color collection and snk vs Capcom (sold separately compared to switch), and been having a blast catching up on a handled I’ve been jealous of somebody having in high school.
People should check out tomtoc armor G-12... seems like a fairly new superslim hardcase for the Steam Deck... Unlike killswitch and similar protections the Armor G12 allow your steam deck to be "naked" when you play. but protected when in a bag. It's not particularly attractive design-wise, but it's basically been the accessory I have been wanting ever since the Steam Deck released!
I didn't know you can close games without going into the steam menu. This is verry important as I couldn't play the steam deck for months becuase the steam/... menus wouldn't work. Thanks Bill!
And the sad thing is, despite being the best case for storing the charger, it absolutely sucks for storing the charger. 😂 I mean, come on, couldn't they have made that case just a little thicker so it wouldn't rest on the charger? Or made the charger a little thinner, so it wouldn't stick out of the back? You can't lay it down flat, unless you lay it upside-down.
The original steam deck case is a double shell, you can separate the outer shell from the inner one and have pretty much exactly the same form factor as the first third party case you presented.
Cryoutils is not working as expected on 3.6. Valve switched to zram and disables the swapfile. The utility needs some re-work now as Valve now trashes the swappiness and swapfile on 3.6 and restarts zram regardless of setting a swapfile and swappiness on subsequent reboots.
Yesss! I have two docks. My official dock is connected to my desktop gaming monitor with a mouse and keyboard so I can use it as a PC. The second dock is Jsaux and connected to the big television for “console” like gaming experience. Then of course there is portable mode on the go. The best of all worlds, truly. The Steam Deck is amazing. It’s replaced all my consoles except my Switch.
It's not actually the time, but the hours remaining depending on your battery status and the game you are playing. Overall, the video is nice! Just got mine last week.
Got my oled about 4 weeks ago now and I love it. The ONLY issue I have with it is when I apply a little force to the top right corner of the deck it sounds crunchy, when I press down on the right stick it kinda sounds like a squeak along with the face buttons but it’s only on the left side. Although I could care less it can get annoying during space flights in no mans sky. Other than that, the deck is awesome.
With the kill options, anything super-quick equivalent to alt+f4 (windows) or ctrl+esc (linux)? I may or may not save scum on deaths in the mines in Stardew Valley... (literally just ordered one to play stardew as I got sick of waiting for Switch updates, and I like playing it on the go, not at my desk).
I have a small 3 in 2 out powered USB switcher that I have connected to both my steamdeck dock and my pc. Although I also run the dock through a capture card so I can split a single ultra wide monitor between multiple tasks so I'm not your typical use case lol
Or just leave it at 1 gb and let the Deck increase it in game. You can increase it to 4-8 gb if you modded your LCD deck to 32 gb Ram. Don´t use Cryo on the 3.6 , the Deck does it better on default

Do you or anyone else know how to fix the verifying installation error? Some of my games freeze and it kicks me back to there. Could badly do with help.
I started getting this more and more as I tinkered with the Deck. Meaning using add ons like Decky Loader and other non stock software. I basically solved it by Factory resetting and reimaging SteamOS and keeping it pretty much stock. Sure I miss those add ons, but the stability is worth it. I found anything that requires the Sudo password to install led me to issues down the road. I guess because it writes and rewrites to places it normally can’t without the password. Worked for me.
Hi Nerdnest. Theres has been a wifi adapter issue circulating since day 1 release of the oled model where the wifi adapter goes into power saving mode after waking from sleep/off. This causes issues for ppl whos trying to remote play with the device. Only known ”fix” is to toggle wifi off/on, and then you can remote play reliably. Is this an issue you or any ppl on your pod have encountered? I heard that wifi issues could stem from what AP you’re using. Do you mind sharing what AP you are using? :)

definitely a great feature. it made resident evil revelations playable because the default deadzones are horrible
Not to downplay the rest, but oh my god, that 'hold to turbo' macro is genius. Here I am mapping it to back paddle buttons like a sucker.
I have watched a lot of Steam Deck videos so far, but none of them were as detailed, and unique as yours. Thanks
