In an unspecified post-apocalyptic wasteland, a man named Lorne has set up his existence on the edge of a great wilderness, hiding out from what the world has become. When he encounters a stranger who stumbles upon his camp, the ensuing conversation reveals just how isolated Lorne is, and what the psychological costs of such isolation are.
Director Jesse Leaman -- along with co-writer Taylor Adams -- has crafted a philosophically engaged dramatic short that tackles an intense, heavy subject: the very nature of existence and what it means to be human, confronting both death and loneliness in a brutal world. Shot strictly from the POV of a silent stranger who wanders upon Lorne's encampment, the narrative essentially focuses on a monologue delivered by a troubled, isolated character so removed from other humans that his solitude has indelibly changed his sense of self and others.
This monologue is delivered by renowned Australian actor and L.A. CONFIDENTIAL and MEMENTO star Guy Pearce, who leverages both his innate movie-star screen charisma and his pliable, supple transformative abilities as a character actor, delivering a powerhouse of a performance.
As the only human presence we see on screen, he commands attention with a strong presence. And as the mercurial Lorne, he penetrates into the character's peculiar, off-kilter psychology, hitting upon a precise mix of aggression, agitation and loneliness. The dynamic characterization is calibrated to be both subtle and illuminating the more he talks, revealing just how his perspective and processing are as gnarled as the woods around him.
We don't get many glimpses of the world Lorne inhabits, both physically and mentally. But the glimpses we do get are evocative, thanks to the bleakly moody cinematography, with its muted, painterly colors and camerawork. The visuals constantly emphasize both Lorne's aloneness within the wider world, as well as the slightly warped, worn camp he occupies in the bush. The extremes seem to paint as much a picture of Lorne's state of mind as the textured writing, making for an intriguing character piece with just enough world-building to contextualize his isolation.
LORNE is less a narrative than a snapshot, but it's a portrait that delves deep into thorny, knotty territory. Through its absence of relationships -- we never do see the stranger that Lorne talks to, and perhaps we're meant to doubt that they really exist -- the story asks just how much we need other people to make sense of ourselves, and to give meaning to our lives.
If Lorne died and no one remembers him or witnessed anything of his existence, what was his life's meaning? The question is as much a Zen koan as it is a philosophical inquiry, and the lack of concrete answers hangs uneasily like the fogs shrouding the landscape that Lorne hides himself within, the indeterminacy haunting both him and the film's viewers. - Фільми й анімація
As soon as he began talking about his lost wife and daughter, my perspective shifted. Not post-apocalyptic, he lost his family and now he's homeless living in the wilderness. "I beg and they go. That's just what they had to do."
Yes it shifts his place in the world. For all we know, he's just mentally unable to deal with the regular world, they left him, and now he's in a self-induced lost world. It would explain how he still has tea and cigarettes.

@Ironclaw XII that's a great movie, Guy and Robert Pattitson were both really good in that movie and I loved the ending, I didn't see that coming lol and I noticed that another Australian Actor wrote the screenplay, his name escapes me right now, he plays Tom Hardy's Brother in Warrior, anyway I really like him as well

Oh man, don't dismiss the rifle quite yet 😨 lol jk one thing I actually haven't seen yet is severe violence from this pandemic, I mean I'm sure its happening, but as far as gun fights in the street over necessities, has that been going on? I guess I could google it, but at this point I agree that hoarding weapons isn't necessary (where I live anyway) unless this all really does turn into an absolute end of the world situation.

I can remember him on some really crappy Australian soap opera from the late 80's. Most Australian actors seem to be extruded through our soap opera industry......does...does that mean that Australian soap operas have good acting? Ive always avoided them like the plauge. My mind is blown.

It's the tiny, little details that effect immersion. This one sucked me right in! I can feel the cold. I can feel the loneliness. I can even feel the angst of trying to show compasion to someone you just met under those conditions. Expertly done!

@Sombersin it's actually fairly normal given your circumstances (isolation). Just abnormal to population on mass who aren't subjected to the same routine. Hope that's helpful, do try to see people more frequently if you can!

That's one of my favorite movies. Love it.
I found this accurate. Many think it's the voice of God, or even Jesus. Takes about a year of total silence, and one day you end up having a deep conversation with yourself out loud. This was brilliant in it's craftsmanship of the screenplay. This gets a 5/5 from me.

Oh yea. I am 68 years old and I am a retired Army disabled veteran with sever chronic PTS. (1969/71)
Before that as a child I suffered psychological & physical abuse.
I tended to isolate within myself. As the years rolled by I would have talks with myself. I felt as an island in humanity.
I talk with & too myself.
I also talk with "God".
Back in 71 when I got zapped, I was close to dying from blood loss. In desperation I made a radio call to God and got an very fast reply.
It's called an NDE.

If there is one thing I can find positive about this Corona Virus thing lately, it is Omeleto! Love the videos. Most are very good and interesting subjects.

@@trevorfuson715 Or perhaps genetics. Being predisposed to go down that rabbit hole and something -- could be substance abuse, could be traumatic experience -- sends the person into that realm. Once you grow accustomed to bizarre, it's actually quite heartbreaking to lose someone to a mental illness. It's cruel for all, especially the person afflicted. Once read: Be kind. For everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.
@@jennysk2057 Jenny your preaching to the choir . Good point though but I think there is many outcomes from which the writer wants you to ponder . I've been isolated for an extreme amount of time. Some of this brought back memories of the things I did to stay sane but after you go down that rabbit hole your perception of things gets misconstrued where you can't tell whats real anymore because your brain has gone into survival mode. Although once you reach real people it stops immediately. I get what you are saying though...

Haven't seen that one but he was in a movie called 'The Proposition' in 2007'. Really gritty and violent. An Australia most don't know about..

Dont compare The Road to this. Omeleto gets formulaic after seeing a few and this was one of those very predictable shorts. Comparing this to the Road does a disservice to John Hillcoat and Cormac McCarthy. It's a hell of a lot more challenging to make a two hr film that a 14min short, especially when the plot and premise has been done to death. I saw the blueprint for this yrs ago and it's been done to death. Some writers, producers and directors have no shame.

The road is an environmental apocalypse. This looks more like a disease/sickness apocalypse because how Pearce mentions possibly being sick and asking if the stranger is sick.
I’m an Aussie and just stumbled onto Omeleto short movies today, watch one, get impressed and decide to look at the catalogue and find Guy Pearce?! Impressive.
What a fabulous performance! I was mesmerized. The piano was a beautiful touch.
I think it's also to make reference to later when the man speaks about how his father would admire at the craftsmanship of a thing.

When you're homeless, you feel exactly like this. Alone, cant trust nobody, missing the time you were happy, feeling there's no getting out of it... I wonder if people know that in 90% of the case, you need someone to help you to get out of the street. I saw a dead homeless man, from cold(I'm in Montreal, Canada), that had tried to shelter himself in the entry of a bank to sleep. How ironic isn't it? Homelessness is death inside and outside.

Brilliant acting from Guy Pearce. Great writing too. About halfway through the video I remember thinking there was something about the way he was talking that was familiar. Then it hit me that he's talking to himself and we're a figment of his imagination. I do that sometimes when I'm feeling very lonely, just ramble on in a conversation pretending someone's there.
Forgot about this guy. World class actor, pulls off that "lonely person seeing another human for first time" look perfectly
What a Brilliant Actor! Wow! I felt the chilly cold damp air and was paranoid waiting for some gunmen to show up? All along that isolation driven him delusion ...
I watch anything that Guy Pearce is in. Always delivers. Such a complex, deep character. Same with Jim Caviziel. They both were outstanding in the Count of Monte Cristo.
This is soooo really, really good!!!! So much raw emotional energy packed into this one scene. One can just taste the desperation and despair. The acting is so amazing instead of turning away, afraid of his man's single humanity, you just have to take a big bite and suffer along. Thank you for sharing.

This was ridiculously well done. Guy Pearce is underrated.
My man guy pierce with the monologue...This would really be something to see performed on stage, or in a ‘black box’.
A man loses his wife and daughter to a tragic accident. He sends himself to self imposed exile to try to escape the pain and memories. He visits the house he's abondonded but no longer recognizes it. The piano he used to play begins to stir some former memory but it's quickly interrupted by thunder which he imagins as gun fire. His lack of human contact has distorted his sense of reality. He now invisions the world as what his state of mind has become. Empty, sad and unercognizable. One evening a stranger appears. He opens up to this stranger, explaining the grief and sorrow about his lost family. He states how long it's been since he's seen another person including his own self, which he probably wouldn't recognize as he's spiraled into self destruction. The stranger is his old self coming to him in a vision in one final attempt to shake him free of his madness or end it entirely.
Love this perspective.
Guy's got an edge of Jack Thompson in this character . Bloody brilliant.

I never could get Memento figured out but the unknown to me actor Guy Pearce was keeping me from abandoning the viewing. He's quite talented and I now will search out his previous jobs.

joseph gregory no the road is based on an apocalypse where the environment is dead, where their are no trees and their is no sun and no vegetation, in this video the guy said “are you sick” meaning this timeline or reality’s apocalypse is based on a sickness, so this has no relation to the road
