Guy Pearce Breaks Down His Most Iconic Characters | GQ - Розваги
Guy isn't appreciated enough, he's such a brilliant actor
Absolutely agree he's fantastic
He’s definitely not as big as he should be, but for the people who care and matter: they know. They know how extremely talented he is.
Common youtube comment he is so underrated
You know what i agree i mean especially when he plays the bad guy or villain he so believable like to the point you want to hurt him lol but that's how you know he does a great job
His royal family impression is shite
Possibly one of the most underrated actors of the generation. A true performer.
Absolutely true.
Absolutely true.
that is the differnet between big paycheck actor and normal actor... and woman just love to get paid as highest paid actor....
No he’s not
Absolutely!!! How great would he be as Mad Max and/or James Bond!?!?!!!!!!!
So Underrated. How is The Count of Monte Cristo not on here?! That is one of the single greatest movies ever made!!! based off one of the oldest novels ever written!! it is such a historical landmark story and was done so well and he is the best villian in it!!! What the heck!?!?!?!
i think it's even more shameful that they didn't cover THE PROPOSITION !!
Guy is one of those actors, like Christian Bale, that is just so focused and committed to his projects to the point that, if I see him in literally anything, I'll watch it knowing that something about the movie got him interested. Such a talent, and always picking such fascinating roles. He's one you'll never see showing up for just a paycheck; he has to want to be there and get to the heart of the role.
He’s better than Christian Bale imo
More versatile and naturalistic
@Ronnie Fights!
Why have you written that 4 times?
@Ronnie Fights! What a ridiculous question. Can YOU act like that? Kind of answers itself.
@@Bad_At_Parties
I think he means is it a talent like being talented at the piano
Idk it’s pretty relative
@@kangaroo3708 If that's the metric we're going by, then of course acting is a talent. Why wouldn't it be? Anything someone does exceptionally, like Guy acts, but that others are horrible at, like you or I, means they are talented at that thing. Talent is just that: being exceptional at something a large part of the human population can't do, or can only do slightly well. If everyone could act like this, it wouldn't be special, but that's obviously not the world we live in.
I would like to see him in another Christopher Nolan film in the future.
I was literally thinking the same
You mean in the past
@@rulinghabs your comment is underrated.
@@doreck07 nah unoriginal and overused IMO
He lost to Liam Neeson as Ras Al Ghul
okay but his role as count mondego in The Count of Montecristo is mad underrated
Joel Z. Yeah you right I agree
FACTS
Joel Z. I agree- he is such an awesome piece of sh*t in that flick.
Yesss!!! That was the first role I saw him in, one of my favorite movies.
one of the best movies i watched growing up!
He is that rare breed of actor who believes in the "less is more" style of acting". He's as brilliant with words as he is with silences.
He has definitely gotten older, bit definitely still a looker. An underrated actor, surprised his performance in Memento didn't scored him more good roles.
LA Confidential - a masterpiece! Not aged at all.
No doubt. A masterpiece indeed. It never gets old.
God only knows how many times I've watched that movie.
@@susieusmaximus5330 69
@@omegamanGXE Nice
@@susieusmaximus5330 Yup it's almost endlessly rewatchable. I can see it twice every year, and it always feels fresh.
Other movies I wish he covered in this video:
- The Time Machine (2002)
- The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)
- Lockout (2012)
Lawless????
The Proposition
Absolutely loved Lockout. So underrated.
Animal Kingdom?
The Rover!!!
Man, I was waiting on a few more. Lawless, The Rover, The Proposition, The Count of Monte Cristo. He is incredible in every thing he does.
Laweless was far and away his best role. I HATED him. Emointionally I wanted something bad to happen to his character. When an actor can make you see past "it's just a movie" to actaully wanting something so drastic to happen to their character is when you know, they have reached the point of an Oscar performance. It's a shame Guy has never been mominated.
RAVENOUS!!
Lawless is so great!!!!!!
The fact that they didn't have him talk about Ravenous, Count of Monte Cristo or The Time Machine is absolutely absurd.
Lawless too
i think it's even more shameful that they didn't cover THE PROPOSITION !!
and Animal Kingdom
@@Raining4rain no AK sucked balls
What a legend. I don’t think he’s underrated, like some people say. Sounds to me like directors know he’s worth the goods. Not all actors, especially Aussies, feel they have to be in all the ‘big movies’ to be of value. People like Guy, Cillian Murphy...they stay humble, don’t care much for the limelight and are incredible actors who clearly love their craft.
Yeah I think Cillian Murphy is a great comparison. Several acclaimed shows and films, a Nolan film or two (or three), but never overtly popular to the point where people recognize him.
I think Cillian has a slight edge because of 28 Days Later which just had freak popularity, but other than that basically equivalent.
Yeah, excellent points. I was one of those thinking he is underrated but what you said makes more sense. He is a true craftsman, just like CM, which to me, hands down, beats “stardom” every time. Those are the ones I respect the most.
My favourite performances of his were in Australia. I loved The Hard Word and the Jack Irish telemovies which ended up a series is absolutely brilliant!
How this magnificent actor has not even been nominated for an Oscar is an out right crime. He carried the movie "The Time Machine" on his back. He has done so many unusual roles and varying parts, it's incredible. Reminds me of Gary Oldman.
The remake of The Time Machine was not that good a movie.
The original was much better.
I would have given him the Oscar for best actor for Memento. He also at least deserved nominations for Priscilla Queen of the Desert, L.A Confidential, The Rover, and Brimstone.
@@HansDelbruck53 I still absolutely adore the actual time machine used in that movie. I love Doctor Who and Back to the Future, but the best physical design of a time machine in a piece of media, has to go to that movie.
Yes I can see how you put him in the same lineup as Gary Oldman, both of them are talented and respected
He cant get a Oscar because that movie is a low badget movie it was taken in 28 days.
Really love how articulate and precise he is in the way he describes these experiences! I was fully engaged for the whole 23 mins.
A true chameleon actor. Such an eclectic range of roles he's played and he perfects every one.
Wish they'd covered The Proposition, Brimstone, The Rover, Lawless, The Count of Monte Cristo and Ravenous.
One of the greatest actors of his generation. This guy becomes the character and you don’t see the actor. very rare indeed
Yes, that is the the thing. No matter how good a Leo Dicaprio performance is I still see Leo Dicaprio acting really well, not the character lol.
Obi... Very nice
First saw him in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. I could not believe that it was the same actor when I watched him in L.A. Confidential a few years later. It blew me away how he could play a flamboyant drag queen and then play to perfection a straight-laced 1950s police officer. His versatility and range has always been impressive.
I had exactly the same experience and then thrilled that he was in Momento!
Guy is like Ethan Hawke. Two actors with range and of great skill and subtlety just cruised through their career quietly. I cant remember a single time either of them were on a tabloid or news headline. In a good way. They just stay out of the limelight and produce movies lol
Neither of them have ever been type cast, and that’s the most important thing. Ethan is a bit more on the mainstream side than Pearce, but I do love them both.
Early 2000's, Ethan Hawke hit the tabloids for cheating on Uma Thurman, with their nanny.
His acting is old school pure talent!
Certainly deserved more recognition.
Wish he’d talked about The Rover. Such an underrated film and his role is great in it
criminal they left it out
Also lawless. Over the top but great.
Yeah it was an ok movie
Incredible movie/performance.
Yea him and Paterson we're good I was just thinking that
Always thought Pearce had a little Gary Oldman in him, and that's about as big a compliment I could give an actor.
I use to confuse him with Gary in the Fifth Element 😂
@@notsosure5924 Never thought about that but can totally see it now that you pointed it out 🤝.
Gary Oldman is a MUCH better actor in my opinion, but I hear what you are saying. Pierce is very solid.
Ian Thorpe
Guy started out in Aussie soap ‘Neighbours’. Gary Oldman started out in ‘Coronation Street.’
Not sure why when Gary old man isn’t the best actor. Not even top 5.
Guy Pearce in Lockdown was one of the greatest surprises and fanservices I have seen in 10 years in cinema. Utterly unexpected, completely appreciated.
*lockout. Yeah he was amazingly witty.
He nailed it
They reeeeeally should've talked about his role in Lawless. One of the greatest/most despicable villains I've seen in cinema. Ever. Outstanding performance.
Yes!
yes, instead of Bloodshot
I hope he wins an Oscar some day. He’s amazing.
He really is
He’s earned it many times over imo. Memento. Lawless. The Rover. Kinda an endless list of amazing performances.
The Time Machine is criminally underrated.
So true...I loved the remake.
It is..I still have the DVD☮️☮️.
The Rover is as well.
@@CasperTheCoolCat Oh yeah, Rover is a favourite, love that film. The ending is perfect... Paterson was great in that also.
It got crap reviews, by critics and the general public.
Didn't know he wasnt 'merican. His American accent is great.
The only movie I've seen with him was "The King's Speech", so it was kind of obvious for me 😄
His voices are ICONIC!

I literally clicked this video specifically for this movie. Ugh.
I try not to.
I really liked that version of The Time Machine too.
Guy was amazing in LA Confidential. Although he didn't get much time on screen, I woulda have loved to see more of his character in The Road. He carried "The Fire" .
His humbleness makes him even greater, and charmer. I really enjoy see him.
Guy, Hugh Jackman and Hugo Weaving should have made a movie about The Bee Gees.
Why???
Ow I love Huge and Hugo......
And Liam Hemsworth as Andy Gibb.

Anyone who likes Guy Pierce but has not seen “the proposition” should do so. Why it isn’t on this list I don’t know
my lures stuck in a tree So disappointed that The Proposition is not even mentioned and the talk about Ironman! Charlie Burns is by far his best character and performance!
So true!
Argh I keep forgetting to watch that one. Nick Cave directed it right?
I second this, Proposition is one of my favorite movies, he was great in it too.
@@RusPitman wrote it :)
He was amazing in lawless. That movie is so underrated and has brilliant actors across the board. Would of loved a segment on that but regardless loved this
Memento is in my top 10 movies and is so highly underated in most top 100 lists it's not even there, i feel like allot of people don't know about the movie and Guy Pierce and Carol Anne were so brilliant in the movie , it's exeptional.
If I'm forced to choose a favourite film I'd say it's Memento. It's amazing in every regard.
Guy Pearce is definitely unsung and underrated. Insanely talented. Played a MARVELous villain in Iron Man 3
Also a great singer/songwriter
Michele Nichols I didn’t know that. Thank you very much for the information.
His role in Iron Man 3 was anything but MARVELous. Just like the movie itself.
@@antona.1327 I think he acted it as well as he could have, it's not his fault the character was written as poorly as it was.
We dont speak of iron man 3
No mention of Lawless. An absolute masterpiece of a character in that.
ONE HUNDERED percent agree.
Memento is one of my all time favorites. I first saw this right before September 11. In those strange weeks and months after this became a movie I watched over and over. The score is still played frequently
Why is Ravenous not on the list? Such an under rated film
It was a great movie
Totally agree! His portrayal of Captain Boyd is heartbreaking and torturous and low key all at the same time. I love that movie so much!
I keep forgetting that Guy Pearce was in The Hurt Locker because he was only in the beginning scene, but at the same time, he was quite memorable for the few minutes he was in.
So memorable you keep forgetting?
@@josephhouguez3801 Indeed
No LAWLESS? No COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO? What gives?!
Yeah, first movie I remember him
Who knows! Maybe they didn't have time and GQ has to impress bigger and richer studios so they couldn't put this actor's amazing movies such as Lawless or The Rover where he gave such brilliant performances but could put Iron Man 3, BloodF****Shot where he had to give generic performances where he couldn't do anything with the role.
I know Memento, LA Confidential are there but we all know they are there because they are his older works, no doubt great but mostly what we associate his greater performances with. I don't understand why can't they put the newer movies which go under the radar! Yes, Iron Man 3 is a big deal for people and yes he is brilliant and everyone knows it already. I even get putting FAST AND FURIOUS: BLOODSHOT in there because promotion! But c'mon! COME ON!

Lawless is one of my favs. This guy was in it but I like Tom Hardy
Completely unrelated to anything he's said here, but he looks great!! I especially love the glasses and that print on him!
I loved him in The Rover, post apocalyptic Australian outback badass movie.
LA Confidential, the first DVD I ever bought, one of the best acted films of all time!
Ravenous was a solid movie back in the day that not many saw. LA Confidential is one of the greatest movies I’ve seen.
I love how Ravenous has developed a cult following of sorts. Absolutely mad great film.
Solid? I'd say it was a great film there's nothing like it and it's endlessly watchable.
Ravenous, Count of Monte Cristo, Lockout, and Rules of Engagement. Dudes a solid actor.
No "Lockout"? The film where Guy showed that he can be a larger-than-life action hero too!
Simon Hamlin I loved that flick!
Yup, that not making the list was surprising.
I seriously would question if he was Brad Pitt in that movie lol
He was larger than life , but the movie made no money
That was a good action movie. Forgot about that one.
was so underrated as scrooge in a Christmas carol last year, brilliantly dark performance
I have yet to watch this! Thanks! Cant wait

Missed out on his roles in "Ravenous" and "The Count of Montecristo". Great performances in both of those.
I was looking for Ravenous, Monte Cristo and Proposition
Ravenous is so good!
Ravenous is such a masterpiece.
Ravenous!
"The Proposition" is GREATLY underappreciated.
Smart, humble and talented. Never knew this side of him, great interview, you can appreciate how much he loves what he does.
Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a must see. Caught it at 2 am when I had insomnia. My first exposure to Guy Pierce. Unbelievable actor. LA Confidential as well. Also, first time I realized how powerful an actor Terrance Stamp is. Great movie!
"The proposition" is a brilliant movie
Absolutely. I own a copy of it. It's alongside Apocalypse Now Taxi Driver Blue Velvet and A Clockwork Orange. In my top 5.
Yes!! My favorite Pearce film!! Top 20 film for me. Same with The Rover... similar in a lot of ways. Pearce plays desolate inside so well.
Absolutely!
Yeah, "the proposition" was
Written by Nick Cave and I still think about that film.
i love momento, Guy isn't appreciated enough, he's such a brilliant actor
Wow how articulate he is in describing each character and it's background. Fabulous Interview.
Why is he not talking about the proposition. An incredible film. His best role to this day. Just beautifully dark well crafted tale of redemption. Extraordinary film
True true...
I liked him as Mike in Neighbours, such an underrated character. His love interest with Plain Jane was fascinating, under played and yet delicate. A show he could go back to if he wanted as Jane is now back on the show. I only watched it to see Kylie Minogue in her dungarees working on cars and the mullets. Oz loved the mullet. Mike wore his well. A fine actor. Peter Weyland for me. Loved him doing that.
I love LA Confidential and it never gets talked about or mentioned as an all time great film.
The fact that they didn't cover The Count of Monte Cristo is a crime.

i think it's even more shameful that they didn't cover THE PROPOSITION !!
Guy Pearce has always been one of my favorites since the first time I saw him in Memento. Watching this I like him even more because he is so human and humble.
No Ravenous with Robert Carlyle!?!? The disrespect, GQ! Those are two great performances by Guy and Robert! And the Count of Monte Cristo!?!? WTF, GQ!?!?

The Time Machine
The Count of Monte Cristo
A Christmas Carol
The Proposition
Ravenous
Lawless
Brimstone
Animal Kingdom
Lockout
People throw the genius tag way too much but Nolan is an actual genius. His ability to write these absolutely mind bending stories and then coherently put it together the way it was invisioned is incredible. Can you imagine trying to write memento or inception? Lol
It was based on the short story "Memento Mori" written by his brother.
LA Confidential absolutely bangs
Captain Boyd - Ravenous.

Guy Pearce, Bill Pullman and Alan Rickman all amazing and all under rated. In Alan's case I say that he is underrated because he is so often only recognized for how well he played villains but his range was much greater.
Did he not like The Count of Monte Cristo? I was looking forward to hearing him talk about that.
My guess is that he didn't have a good experience with it or he didn't like the fact it wasn't true to the book. Either way, it's an excellent movie that he acted brilliantly in.
Other movies they skipped include Ravenous, Rules of Engagement, The Time Machine, The Proposition, First Snow, Traitor, Death Defying Acts (though he does talk briefly about playing Houdini), The Road, Animal Kingdom, Seeking Justice, Lawless and The Rover. :(
