    Also long overdue, but I've been busy with life and stuff. I used this version of the song because it is the best version in my opinion, also I do not believe the gun sound effects used are accurate, but they get the job done.
    EDIT: Also the date is wrong, it should say either 1746 or 1870's/90's

    Lyrics:
    Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
    Onward! the sailors cry;
    Carry the lad that's born to be king
    Over the sea to Skye.
    Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar,
    Thunderclaps rend the air;
    Baffled, our foes stand by the shore,
    Follow they will not dare.
    -----
    Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
    Onward! the sailors cry;
    Carry the lad that's born to be king
    Over the sea to Skye.
    Many's the lad, fought on that day
    Well the claymore did wield;
    When the night came, silently lay
    Dead on Culloden's field.
    -----
    Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
    Onward! the sailors cry;
    Carry the lad that's born to be king
    Over the sea to Skye.
    Though the waves leap, soft shall ye sleep,
    Ocean's a royal bed.
    Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep
    Watch by your weary head.
    -----
    Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
    Onward! the sailors cry;
    Carry the lad that's born to be king
    Over the sea to Skye.
    Burned are their homes, exile and death
    Scatter the loyal men;
    Yet ere the sword cool in the sheath
    Charlie will come again.
    -----
    Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
    Onward! the sailors cry;
    Carry the lad that's born to be king
    Over the sea to Skye.
    Over the sea to Skye.

    This was played on pipes at my granny’s funeral this past May. It’s strange that I know the melody but never actually paid attention to the lyrics. She’d probably admonish me for that…

    We were taught this song at School. We were Catholics and taught Bonnie Prince Charlie was the Rightful King. The Jacobites were fighting for the real King. These brave men managed to get Bonnie Prince Charlie to Safety in France..

    We learned this song at school in Ireland in the 60s and there was another verse that went Mull on the stern , rum on the port, igg on the starboard bow , glory of youth glowed in his soul , where is that glory now.
    It is indeed a beautiful song

    Thanks for uploading, I would have sung, (that's what I called it, others may differ) this a hundred times at school and never thought about the lyrics, in my defence it's hard to think with a bloke with a cane patrolling! I really enjoyed finding out what the song was really about and seeing the lyrics again, thanks again.

      It's hard to find many Scottish and Irish songs sang by men, and they were very much written to be performed by male bards. Something is lost when these songs of rebellion are sang in a soft, saccharine voice. Also, the echo in Ella Robert's version drives me nuts.

    Oh dear, I hadn't heard this version before. (I had heard of it, just not seen the lyrics.) Anyways, been working on a historical fiction involving a time traveling American who has found himself in 1794 Botany Bay. Outlander was one of those shows whose themes he loves ... He plays a guitar and is asked to play something for the Lt Governor.

    Don't forget that the Jacobites represented only a proportion of the peoples of the British Isles. Many, many people did not want to be ruled by a (weak) Catholic king.

      Yes, it appears that I was wrong. The song is about the battle of Culloden (1746) and the song seems to have been made in 1870's-1890's. So the date 1782 is wrong in all respects, thanks for getting me to check the date again! I'll add this to the description.
