We still sing our babies to sleep in Australia with this song
Scotland is still in our hearts

@@Wotan-Mit-Uns How so?
@@Wotan-Mit-Uns As a Canadian, I'm both annoyed by and embarrassed for foreigners (usually Americans) who think they know better than we do about our own politics. I'll bet Australians feel the same.
Learned about this song long ago in college in the US from my roommate who was a proud 4th generation Scottish-American. We kept in touch after graduation and 4 years later met up in Kyle of Lochalsh where we crossed over to Skye singing this song.
Amerimutt moment
Being a fourth generation Scottish-American all those years ago, it is most likely that his ancestors settled in the US before the song was written in the late 19th century. It's a bit of late Victorian romanticised whimsy (written by Sir Harold Boulton, an English Baronet from Kent) and published in 1884. It's interesting to see how many people have been taken in by this ... 😀
@@andrewwigglesworth3030 Most of Scottish culture we see today, the kilts and all are romanticised Victorian invention by Englishmen.
Just back from Scotland, we visited the spot in Glenfinnan where Charles Stuart first raised his standard in 1745, very moving.
According to my mom, she and my aunt sang this at my great grandpa's funeral. He was a die hard Scot all the way.
Mandela effect!!!!!! This song is only 5 years old!! LOL!
EVIL UBUNTU I don't get what you mean? According to Jacobites.net, "The lyrics were written by Sir Harold Boulton, Bart. (1859 - 1935), to an air collected by Miss Annie MacLeod (Lady Wilson) in the 1870s. The song was first published in "Songs of the North" by Boulton and MacLeod, London, 1884, a book that went into at least fourteen editions."
@@jlue7501 i believe they think the song was written for the Outlander series because they use it for the theme. Sad honestly.
@@evilubuntu9001 Lol. How to be uncultured.
You should've noticed the differences in lyrics.

Hi mate! Are U russian Tsar? Me too)
Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry.
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye
Loud the wind howls
Loud the waves roar
Thunderclaps rend the air
Baffled our foes
Stand by the shore
Follow they will not dare
Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry.
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye
Many's the lad fought on that day
Well the claymore did wield
When the night came
Silently lain
Dead on Colloden field
Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry.
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye
Though the waves heave
Soft will ye sleep
Ocean's a royal bed
Rocked in the deep
Flora will keep
Watch by your weary head
Speed bonnie boat like a bird on the wing
Onward the sailors cry.
Carry the lad that's born to be king
Over the sea to Skye
I've been to the beautiful Island of Skye and didn't know this song.... what a loss
Long live Catholic England and Free Scotland! Love from Poland
Englands not been catholic for 400 yrs and Scotland is free free from the romany church
I too have been to Skye, many years ago. I remember the rocky coastline, which as bare as the face of the moon and then coming around the bend to see a startling green valley. I'll never forget it.
This is THE BEST version of the Skye Boat Song that I have ever heard!!! Thank you soooo much. So much better than the theme tune to Outlander, I've been searching for ages and have now found the Real thing and with all the lyrics which I've never heard afore. And I love your voice Alastair. Thank you
iona Courtenay You should find the version from the channel Clamavi de Profundis that they just put up not too far back. It’s also very good
Yes, this version is wonderful. Alastair, your voice is exquisite. Thank you for posting this and the beautiful illustrations.
Oops....I almost forgot to thank you for this beautiful video! I loved all of it....your singing, the illustrations and I almost cried about the fate of Bonnie prince Charlie and of course the scots!! Were forced to leave his beloved Skye! And what the brits have done to the culture of the scots!!!
Being not allowed to ever speak your mothertongue again or to wear your cloth which you used to be....must be very, very cruel! :'(
And since that - to be fair, my humble knowing - about the fate of the scots, I can understand them all the more, and because of the foolishness of the brits these days, that they will be free from the United Kingdom and wil stay or will be back into the EU!
Yes this is a beautiful version. By the way, don’t get confused by the horrible situation regarding historical accuracy in the world of mass media: the version of The Skye Boat Song used in Outlander was NOT created for the Outlander serie. It’s a variant of the original song written by the famous writer Robert Louis Stevenson. The man was clearly emotionally involved with the Jacobite lore, and he wrote the song you can hear in Outlander imagining it’s an answer by Charles Edward Stuart himself to the original song. Outlander “stole” the song from Stevenson and changed the person who sings from male to female.
iona Courtenay
This is the original writen by Sir Robert Boulton to ancient music discovered by Annie Macleod in 1800’s There is another version of it by Robert Louis Stevenson but although I am a fan of his I prefer the original.
An American song writer Bear McCreary changed the words of RLS version for the Outlander theme. Claims he wrote it
I wish they had not tampered with this beautiful song that tells the tale of Our Prince

Flora Macdonald is famous for helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape from Scotland after the defeat of the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. 2:12
There’s a Scottish Highland dance named “Flora MacDonald’s Fancy” that is a tribute to her.
What a great rendition. I never knew the song's lyrics or its Jacobite roots. Ironically it is a popular inspection tune for the Queen's soldiers in Canada if there is a pipe band on parade.
Loads of Jacobites immigrated to Canada, it's not surprising tbh.
@@Loherangrin333 Because literally no one gives a shit about Jacobitism.
@@Loherangrin333 What are you talking about? Aren't the Saxe-Coburg-Gothas from like Thuringia or something? Did they go to Canada or are you saying that the Commonwealth royalty are Saxe-Coburg-Gothas?
@@Targawrath The Windsors are the Saxe_Coburg-Gothas. They just changed their name during WW1. They are from todays south eastern Germany.
@@Loherangrin333 Ah, makes sense now. I would say it is likely due to the Gaelic influence on Canada given that the Skye Boat song remained popular (particularly in Scotland) among oarsmen and folk musicians. There are also different lyrics for the song and even the tune is from another piece (I think Cuckoo something, can't remember atm) and has just been popularized in the Skye Boat song.
So perhaps they're either playing the other tune or it is from the gaelic influence. Either way, I don't think it is disrespectful but thank you for informing me.
My mother used to sing this to me as a young child, and I’m so happy to find the song again
My Granddad was a Scot, he sang this to me as a young child, obviously I had no idea what it was about, I only discovered all the verses with this version, and the story with the 'Outlander books'; it became real then, my ancestors were there too! Iòna (UK)
My grandmother used to sing this to me, and I sing it to my grandkids.
In 1969 when I was 11 years old I read the song out of a music. During music that day I requested that we sing the song. I requested it every week. I can't say exactly why I love this song so much I mean it's beautiful song but there was something more to it. Maybe one day I'll figure it out
Very beautiful song, I didn't know it, thanks, Laurent from FRANCE
I am interesed and very moved for a long time by the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie.
He was in his right, but infortunately, he lost all.
Maybe he was a dreamer but not a soldier in strategy.
Maybe he was under the Stuart's curse...
What exactly was the cause of the curse?
*Stewart spell it like a Scot, not a frenchman
@@Ggdivhjkjl If we study the history of the Stuarts, we see that they have been pursued by bad luck for more than two centuries, all their endeavours and efforts to recover the throne of England and Scotland have always tragically ended.
There were, among others, King Charles I, his daughter Henriette who had married Louis XIV’s brother, Queen Anne, and finally Bonnie Prince Charlie, who ended his alcoholic life out of despair that he could not find the kingdom of the Stuarts after the battle of Culloden in 1746.
You call bad luck, I call demonic intervention, why would Satan and his cronies want a faithful king on the Throne? They would lose too many souls if they allowed him to live, after all, have you noticed how the good always perish first and the wicked live close to the max?

They sure weren't fine? They got slaughtered by Cumberland and his troops, their culture destroyed and lands ethnically cleansed. That's clearly something very far from "fine" wouldn't you agree?
Both the paintings and the beautiful song bring tears to my eyes. Life can be so unfair. Evil often wins out, because it's more ruthless than good.
Describe how the Old Pretender and his progeny were less evil than the Hanoverians? Though of course one of James II's children became Queen ...

Few people know that Flora MacDonald exiled herself to the North American colony of North Carolina in Anson County, where she settled with other Jacobite exiles. Strangely enough, they fought for King George in 1775 during the Revolution, fighting at Moore’s Creek with targe and claymore against the musket carrying Patriot militia, and again were defeated. Flora lost her NC estates and returned to Scotland.
"patriotic militia" lmao, you mean foreign mercenaries paid for by the banks, the bank who puppeteered and still do the masons that americans have been indoctrinated to call "founding fathers" which the colonists didn't support
Patriot, not patriotic idiot.
I learned that from Outlander!😁
For people in Eastern North Carolina it is not unknown, look up Flora MacDonald/Highlander Academy in Red Springs, NC. In The Southeastern part of the state, especially the Sandhills, there is a very large population of families with Scottish ancestry. I know multiple people with the last name Campbell, Stewart/Stuart and O Neill. One of our counties is literally called "Scotland County," and there is a huge Scottish flag raised when you enter the county line on the highway. Campbell's company soup factory is located in that county.
this is cause George III father, even tho he was a Anglician was a firm Jacobite supporter, and supported a anglo church similar to what Charles I and II wanted

As someone with scottish blood also,,,,,Is it just me or doesn't this songs story seem about a cowardly act by the Prince instead of a heroic act? Honor for Scotts i supposed was about a warrior spirit and fighting to the death on the battlefield not running away. Think about the Spartans for example at Thermopylae even though greatly out numbered,,, it was honor to die fighting and never retreat or surrender. I don't know perhaps the scotts fighting style was more guerilla tactics...this is the best version of this song though. Thanks for the upload.
