People say that this comparsion is unfair, which is not true. This video actually helped me to decide if I need a bigger macbook pro for editing during travel, and the answer is no. Macbook Air will handle stuff like that easy, while sitting in a train, or waiting at the airport. I can easily process and organize some footage during that time, and export the project on a PC when I get back home. Thanks!
Awesome! Glad to hear it is working out for your edits 💪 much lighter also, the pro is a chunky boy. Thanks for watching and the comment, great to hear your experience. Enjoy the AIR✌️
On another video I saw, the user compared the 8gb m3 air to the 16gb m3 air, and these crazy export times were accomplished in about half the time on the higher spec. It's also worth noting that the 8gb model just running MacOS used 6gb of the unified memory, while the 16gb version used just under 8gb.
That's actually a great comparison to some. I can get a refurbished MacBook Pro M1 Max for about the same price as a 24GB/512 version of MacBook M3 Air right now... so yeah, surprisingly a very good comparison.
I got the base 8gb macbook pro and it destroys all the 4k footage I throw at it. The crazy spec windows laptops I tried couldn't even play the same 4k footage with 32gb of ram. It's crazy good.
That is great to hear you are enjoying it. I was pretty impressed with the base model, MacBook Pro M3 as well, especially for after effects. Enjoy your new machine and thanks for watching and letting us know your experience over there✌️

How long would a 6 hour video export on the macbook air m3? A 6 hour video with 4k footage, multiple overlays and multiple visual effects. I plan on exporting during the nights when i sleep.
Hey there Veras, sorry but I have no idea how long it would take, really depends on how much you keep adding onto the 6hr session. Maybe 1-2 hours? I am mainly working with hour long chunks of 4k, those take 10-20 min exports, faster on the max. Good luck and let us know how long it takes if you give it a go. Thanks for watching!
Yeah you should be just fine with smaller vids and not too many tracks/effects stacked up. I would still recommend the MacBook Pro base model for anyone editing video if budget is a concern. it's only a few more hundred and well worth it, speakers, ventilation, screen etc. might be nice to give yourself some wiggle room and some more minutes back to your life with all the exports. Good luck finding the right fit!

So overall I should be fine with a 16GB RAM / 512 GB SSD Macbook Air M3, when it comes to editing 30-40 minute-long YT videos with not a whole bunch of effects aside from putting myself over some backrounds with game/movie footage etc?
In general yes. But the chip will thermal throttle after lets say 5 minutes of rendering the export. And so will probably take a while longer to finish. Personally I don't really mind that it takes a few minutes longer than a pro or max chip. Most consumers who edit their travel or home videos would probably prefer to see what the editing timeline experience feels or looks like. The export times aren't that big a deal when we're talking performance.
I definitely want to do a deeper dive on the editing performance. I can say it is very snappy and speedy, feels like the m1 max for editing a few shorts, and a 3 min promo vid with a few tracks of 4K footage. These M3 chips are pretty awesome. Thanks for watching and the comment, more coming soon 👍
I don't see people comparing the base M3 air with m1 Max and this is exactly what I need! I currently have a m1 max macbook pro with 32g ram and am thinking about adding a secondary travel laptop, I've been wondering how they would compare just to give myself some realistic expectations. Wow. Thanks, I appreciate it...
Oh awesome! Glad this helped out. Felt the same way, would be nice to have a dedicated travel laptop but whenever I use these AIRs I realize how good my M1 is holding up. No need to get more, maybe a refurbished M1 Max that you don't mind throwing around, they are almost the same price. or even a refurbed base model m3 MacBook Pro was pretty awesome, Apple can be tricky with these things. Thanks for watching and the nice comment, good luck!
Thank for the video, it was very interesting. I was wondering how long were the timelines in Première Pro and also have you done any test in DaVinci Resolve with a timeline with editing footage with more that one clip, I am wonder if it would make it longer to export or not?
Are you kidding? The speakers on this thing is insane, for what it is. Yes compared to previous models the sound kind of blew me away. But a good review!

Good luck finding the right solution, the macbook pro might save you a lot of quality of life time when it comes to long podcast videos 👍
my guess is that M1 Max was able to pull ahead in davinci/premiere coz it had more encoders I think for those specific codecs, its interesting that when it came down to rendering motion graphics that don't rely on the encoders all that much, m3 was able to pull ahead with just 8gb ram and I'm pretty sure that 16gb ram m3 is even faster..
I am currently frustrated with my macbook air m3, 1TB SSD, 24GB RAM. After Effects is unbelievably slow when tracking objects and rendering content aware fill. I only try to work with a 20sec clip and it's taking endlessly long for each task... It says Frame Render Time 128ms, but when I am rendering the 1300 frames it takes about 1 minute for 1 frame. Am I missing something?
You will probably be pretty blown away by the upgrade in speed. If you are ok with the render/export times on the 2017, I think it would be a great upgrade. Check out those base model MacBook pros also, might be nice to give yourself some wiggle room for newer apps, better speakers, ventilation. Good luck and thanks for checking out the video!

Hi, I love the thin design on the macbook air that‘s why i don‘t want to buy an pro device. Do you think I can buy an macbook air m3 16GB ram, 512 gb for making edits and musicvideos on after effects? idc about rendering times
I was super impressed with how well it did in After Effects. I bet you could definitely make those edits and music vids on it, these M3s are really powerful. I know what you mean about the thinness, the AIRs are pretty sleek. Good luck and let us know how it goes if you decide on that configuration. Thanks for watching and the comment!
can u give us an update cause i have the exact same question! which one did u pick and if you picked the m3 hwo did it do in premier and after effects??
Hey there D, you could definitely do those long form vids on here but I have been hearing about the usual heat problems with these AIRs and that will definitely be putting the brakes on exports and performance, timeline will probably start getting choppy and sluggish. Have you looked into other M chips on the MacBook Pro? I think you would like that package more for any type of editing, SD card reader is crucial to my workflow over here. Good luck and thanks for checking out the vid!
I’m after a new machine for console streaming via capture card. And then of course video editing. Would the M3 Air handle this ok? Or better off going with the M3 pro?
Go pro my man! You will need that ventilation for those long streaming sessions. The AIR might melt itself to death. Good luck, that extra money is an investment in yourself✌️
Well it can do it, depending on how many tracks of 4k and then at rendering time it will get sticky. No fans make it get hot and it will throttle down its power so as not to melt itself. Kind of a bummer for the AIRS. Thanks for watching and good luck with the right laptop. I say go pro if you are editing 4k stuff, make it easy on yourself ✌️
The Air is a really nice machine (I have the base M1) but I came away from these tests being very impressed with the M1 Max. Like you say, if you need the power then it is a no brainer to get the beefier brother. I am still dreaming of a 12" machine, but everything seems to be getting bigger.
Hey there Martin! Glad to hear the M1 is still working out for you. These M chips have slowly been getting better (especially for after-effects) but I see no need to upgrade, the M1 max is still going strong 💪 for people needing a new laptop though, these are a winner. Hope your week is going well and thanks for checking out the vid!
Hi, awesome video! I was looking into buying the M3 MacBook Air 15”. Do you think 24Ram/256GB will be good enough for editing using Adobe Premiere Pro? Do you think 24 gigs of ram is too much and 16 gigs would suffice? Or, should I look into a Pro? Thank you have a great day
Thanks Taylor, glad it was helpful. I always nudge video editors to the macbook pro, for the vent fans, the sdcard reader, and an hdmi port. You can just do a lot more with it, gives you more wiggle room for the future. Its more money but its an investment in your future, and will probably give you less frustration. Good luck and hope you find the right video editing rig, take care ✌️
@@TheFloodLightShow thank you so much for the response! That’s what I thought, I just really liked the slim form factor of the Air and the lower price tag, but I’ll figure it out. Thanks!
Fantastic video, super helpful! I'm currently using a 2019 Intel MacBook Pro and considering upgrading to either an M1 MacBook Pro 16" or M3 MacBook Air 15" (16GB 512GB upgrades) - I edit tons of photos and videos (4K) and wondering if there will be a noticeable difference in performance between the two. I really like the idea of having an SD card slot and extra bump in performance, but I've read that no matter which M series chip you get, it will be a huge upgrade from Intel. Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated!
Do you think I would be okay editing 1080p videos for UA-cam channel roughly 30mins long with Davinci Resolve on the Macbook Air M3 with 16gb. Rendering on it not any issue as I will probably switch the project to my massive desktop PC to render. Just looking for something to make the edits mobile.
Hi, I am a teacher, who wants to enter into video editing. Where i would be having small to mid scale editing but a lengthy videos . which one among these is better, mac mini pro or macbook air m2 or macbook air m3 ?
I would say get the latest and greatest. Apple is making small gains with the chips now but still getting better. For lengthy vids, bump up that ram as much as you can. It will help with the large exports. If you can go macbook pro, the vent fans will also help those big exports. Good luck and thanks for checking out the vid!
it's so funny that we are bummed that something too over a min that used to take 6hrs not all that long ago (and that was hoping it wouldn't crash during over and over again)
that is the truth Sandia, we are in lucky times now. Must be nice to start off with machines this fast. Thanks for checking out the video and the comment✌️
Hey, can i get the project file of the after effect video you rendered ?, i wanna see how long my pc takes to export it, if the performance is close compared to m3 air im definitely going to buy it
Oh yes they are great for normal usage Jon. If you wanted the best right now, a base model M4 MacBook Pro is also a great option. Good luck with your decision and thanks for checking out the vid ✌️
Hi.. Can you please try exporting on Macbook Air M3 (16gb, 512) 30 minutes 4K videos on Da Vinci? I wanna see how the Air would handle it. Planning to buy one. Thanks. 😊
Hello... Thanks for the video. I just need some clarification. If I'm editing videos below 4K, how does the 8GB MacBook Air with the M3 chip perform? Or should I consider the 2022 8GB MacBook Pro instead?
I am always advising video editors to go for the pro, it's definitely worth it for us, even for 1080p editing. sd card reader, cooling vents, more ports, it will definitely give you a few years of good power. If you can bump up the ram, that will give you some wiggle room for future endeavors, faster exports etc. Good luck with the decision and thanks for checking out the vid ✌️
Thanks for the great explanation. If you can, plz tell me... Which laptop would you recommend between the M2 Pro 8GB 256 and the M3 Air 8GB 256, considering that the only difference is the cooling fan? And do you recommend the M2 Pro 8GB 256 for video editing purposes? The problem is M2 pro is 2 years old generation.
here is a good article about it on AppleInsider: appleinsider.com/articles/23/11/10/what-apples-three-gpu-enhancements-in-a17-pro-and-m3-actually-do. It makes the machine only use the memory it needs instead of a general chunk so it is like reactive memory. Whatever it is doing, it makes After Effects fly. Thanks for checking out the vid!
Most definitely, that would be a good workflow for the air, no sd cards, all airdop. Bump up that ram if you can to give yourself some wiggle room. Good luck David and thanks for checking out the video!
@@davidpickett3546 oh yes definitely, and there are nice hubs and dongles that you can get for it to open up more ways to plug in. For myself, i am importing lots of sd cards, looking for the sd card importer can get annoying everytime. You will get your workflow figured out easily, its a nice laptop. Good luck man!
Will it be suitable for voice recording and processing? Judging by the review, it should be suitable. So far, the only embarrassing thing is that there are only 2 type-c. External audio interface, external monitor and that's it. There's no place to put a keyboard, mouse, external SSD anymore(
Mhmm I want to get the MacBook Air 15 inch with 16 gigs of ram and 246 ssd. I only do slight editing for fun nothing like 4K. Videos only for like TikTok or YouTub. And pictures too but nothing too crazy all and all it’s for fun any help? I also have the iPad Pro but I want a laptop too
This will be a good start and easily handle small videos for social. I do foresee your hard drive filling up fast, an external ssd might be handy keeping the desktop clean 🤣. I usually give my laptops 1TB of breathing room but it has a hefty price chunk on with it. Good luck with the new computer and thanks for watching!
I wonder how the Macbook Air with 24GB of RAM would have compared to the Macbook Pro with 32GB of RAM. That's the decision I am facing right now with the upcoming M4 generation - is it worth spending $1.000 more to get the Pro? What are your thoughts on this, considering export times? Also: does the mediocre ventilation of the AIr mean that the fan is constantly running when using After Effects or Premiere?
I wish there was non-video encoding / editing performance usage with the MacBook Air. I guess I'll just go with the Air since gaming doesn't really exist on Macs and I don't plan to do anything with video except watching video.
nice video. i make restoration videos i film it in 4k on my iphone 12 pro max.wich apple would you advice me for video eddting lik 2 videos per week of 40 minutes? thank you
I always encourage video editors to go macbook pro, even the base models fly. The vent fans will help out on those long 40 min exports as the AIR would start getting very hot. Bump up as much RAM as you can afford. Good luck and thanks for watching the vid!
Informative video, but you need to practice speaking with more energy. The way you talk reminds me of boring school classes I zoned out every 30 seconds. Keep it up and grow your channel! :)
I am looking for a lighter laptop that can replace my M1 Pro. and I heavily use AE. After seeing this, I was amazed, I think M3's speed can be at par with M1Pro or better. I'm going to buy! I need that lighter laptop for travel/coworking sessions.
@@verasambience i am now currently using the m3 mbair 16GB variant. The performance with AE during the editing process is at par with M1 Pro 16GB but most of the time much better. The new ram feature of M3 helped a lot to perform better even without a fan. But in rendering time, M1Pro wins. I havent tried with Premiere and Da Vinci. I mainly use AE, so thats my exp with MBA M3 16GB vs M1 Pro 16GB.
I appreciate your hard work and generosity to share with us. The two ports are TOO CLOSE together! I use a wireless mouse with a dongle, and to bypass the Apple storage scam, I use an external storage device (while constantly fending off sales daggers to pay for cloud storage). The wireless dongle and the storage cable do not fit without using an industrial razor blade to shave off two sides of the cable to make them fit. Apples vegetarian engineers who drive expensive e-cars and whose parents were educated at UC Berkley are OUT of touch with us commoners. Even the software is micro text. PS... Editing with only 8GB ram is silly. Cant scrub with reckless abandon... Another sales scam... -Just sayin
I am just a small creator I don't see much to invest this macbook pros even 5 mins difference its ok to be honest unless very professional. This macbook air m3 16GB with 512GB fair enough for a small creator. But overall good video I would say.
Yeah for sure, you could definitely get your video editing chops down on this machine. I would say bump up that ram if you can allow it, it will come in handy as your editing sessions get larger and more complex. Good luck with your purchase and thanks for checking out the vid!
@@TheFloodLightShow hi but if the ram is bumped up a bit wont it then match maybe a 16gb pro matching a 24gb ram of an air price and function wise? i dont like the design of the pro but am torn between those 2 considerations also can you a review of the heat issue on 16gb air.

@@TheExplorist Hi, may I ask. When you said that you “used few application like Final cut pro, Adobe photoshop and few tabs on chrome”, were you using them at the same time? And what was the video resolution on FCP that you were editing at? Was it 4k? Thanks. Hope to hear from you soon. Cuz I’m considering to buy M3 Air.
You forget your exporting speeds also depends on whether youre using wifi or ethernet connections as well. Internet speeds drastically improve how fast you can upload and transfer data between certains apps. Also, davinci pro and adobe both suggest on their websites for 16gb of ram for best quality app performance. 16gb MINIMUM for 4k rendering(32gb for BEST QUALITY) or any kind of color grading. Yes the base model can do it, but its not going to do it well. Another thing people dont consider is people are not watching most UA-cam videos on their tvs, so 4k is overrated for average consumer usage. Even when i was in film school, they'd tell us 1080p is about the max you want for regular consumer usage. Its great to have a 4k rendering, but 1080p and under is going be 93% of consumers. And unless you put a 1080p and 4k display together, most average consumers wont tell the difference right away.
I can feel with 8gb of ram on these because I’m not running huge apps that use a lot of memory, but a 256gb is insulting. Especially when iPhones can have up to 1tb
"only $400....." The price of another complete laptop in South Africa 🇿🇦. We pay a premium of at least 55% over US prices for anything Apple. It really is for the privileged and well-heeled only.
I can't tell you how many of these types of videos I've trawled through on YT ... I think this one is the best Ive seen. It's AE and Prem focussed, and the guy sounds genuinely bored and says things like 'shits and giggles', unlike asshole 'UA-camr personalities'.

can u give us an update cause i have the exact same question! which one did u pick and if you picked the m3 hwo did it do in premier and after effects??
Can you tell me the Music name the time counting time?
Hey there AM, I made that track using an ipad synth app, Audiokit Synth One. Glad you were digging it!
Thank you so much ❤
So if I wanted to edit a 1 hr video would this do it ?
@@TheFloodLightShow top man thank you for the advice! 👍☺️☺️🙂
Apple Macbook Air M3 8GB ram can easily edit 4K video?
Well it can do it, depending on how many tracks of 4k and then at rendering time it will get sticky. No fans make it get hot and it will throttle down its power so as not to melt itself. Kind of a bummer for the AIRS. Thanks for watching and good luck with the right laptop. I say go pro if you are editing 4k stuff, make it easy on yourself ✌️
i think you messed up the namings, the notch one is m3 air and the other one is m1 max, and i saw the notch one exporting faster than the other one
Thanks!
Hi! Would it be possible for you to provide the after effects project file? so I can test it on my own machine, thanks!
Everywhere I've looked at these m3 Macbook airs, 8gb is a tremendous bottleneck. The 16gb model works roughly 1.5-2x faster than the base 8gb model
Air 15 means air 15 inch?@@smittyvanjagermanjenson182
Feel like an M1 Pro comparison would have been more interesting as they’re both similar price points
Can you make it for us?
What version of Premiere Pro are you using? I just bought the M3 Pro 512GB SSD and 18GB ram. Performance on PP is so bad that the software is unusable
16gb ram or 18gb ?
@@lakkadbagga 18
Do you think I would be okay editing 1080p videos for UA-cam channel roughly 30mins long with Davinci Resolve on the Macbook Air M3 with 16gb. Rendering on it not any issue as I will probably switch the project to my massive desktop PC to render. Just looking for something to make the edits mobile.
exactly the comparison I was looking for! Thank you!
Oh sweet! Glad this video was helpful and thanks for letting me know, much appreciated. Enjoy the new laptop ✌️
Why u compare 6 gb RAM vs 58 gb RAM in Pr?
Dont know why not 🤷🏼♂️
How hot it gets for a 15 minute 4K video editing and export?
would love to know too...did you get answers?
Can you edit 4K 10 bit video in this machine...?
Hi, I’m considering purchasing a MacBook for editing and gaming. Could you please recommend the best option??
Thanks for checking out the video and the comment✌️
show editing performance, frame drops... plz
How long was the quicktime video?
Hey, can i get the project file of the after effect video you rendered ?, i wanna see how long my pc takes to export it, if the performance is close compared to m3 air im definitely going to buy it
i want to buy a macbook air m3 is it good for normal use
Oh yes they are great for normal usage Jon. If you wanted the best right now, a base model M4 MacBook Pro is also a great option. Good luck with your decision and thanks for checking out the vid ✌️
Hi.. Can you please try exporting on Macbook Air M3 (16gb, 512) 30 minutes 4K videos on Da Vinci? I wanna see how the Air would handle it. Planning to buy one. Thanks. 😊
I wouldn’t mind the extra wait time to have a lighter portable machine thankfully both can do the same work just at a different rate
We are in lucky times for sure Don. Thanks for checking out the vid and the comment 👍
Great review as always. I like your explanation, very on point!
Thank you so much!! So glad you liked it and thank you for the comment✌
What is dynamic caching? Can someone explain?
here is a good article about it on AppleInsider: appleinsider.com/articles/23/11/10/what-apples-three-gpu-enhancements-in-a17-pro-and-m3-actually-do. It makes the machine only use the memory it needs instead of a general chunk so it is like reactive memory. Whatever it is doing, it makes After Effects fly. Thanks for checking out the vid!
@@TheFloodLightShow thx
What you lose in processing time you win in portability
Oh yes definitely. Thanks for watching Axel!
Will i be able to create oneshot videos from my phone footage using 8gb m3 mac. Will be importing separate audio from my music projects
Most definitely, that would be a good workflow for the air, no sd cards, all airdop. Bump up that ram if you can to give yourself some wiggle room. Good luck David and thanks for checking out the video!
@@TheFloodLightShow what is airdrop

I'm new to macs. Can't I just plug my phone in?

How is the 4k raw video's playback within Premiere pro?
what do you guys think on the Macbook air M3 15inch vs macbook M1-Pro 16inch 2021 on Final cut pro 4k editing? many thank!!!
M3 8gb 256gb vs M2 8gb 512
Which one is good ( in air model)
M3s are better than last years models by a little bit. the storage capacity won't effect performance other than when you run out of it. Good luck!
I liked the way you talked...
Thank you so much! Most people say I talk too slow in these videos lol. Thanks for watching and the kind comment🥹
I wonder what makes the M3 Air better in After effects than the M1 MAX?
I wonder how the Macbook Air with 24GB of RAM would have compared to the Macbook Pro with 32GB of RAM. That's the decision I am facing right now with the upcoming M4 generation - is it worth spending $1.000 more to get the Pro? What are your thoughts on this, considering export times? Also: does the mediocre ventilation of the AIr mean that the fan is constantly running when using After Effects or Premiere?
Macbook air doesn’t has a fan
Your video helps me to make a decision. I will get a MacBook Pro!
AWESOME! A wise choice. Hope it works for your needs and thanks so much for letting me know. Good luck with the new MacBook Pro!
Air M3, i believe, is still way way better upgrading from a windows laptop. Latter is just a headache when it comes to doing profession work.
Macbook air m3 support adobe photoshop, and premiere pro , fcp , after effects pls reply me sir
I wish there was non-video encoding / editing performance usage with the MacBook Air. I guess I'll just go with the Air since gaming doesn't really exist on Macs and I don't plan to do anything with video except watching video.
Thank you for the video. It just basically telling me M4 line up is way overkill for what I need, stick with my Air 15 M3 16/512. Thanks again
nice video. i make restoration videos i film it in 4k on my iphone 12 pro max.wich apple would you advice me for video eddting lik 2 videos per week of 40 minutes? thank you
I always encourage video editors to go macbook pro, even the base models fly. The vent fans will help out on those long 40 min exports as the AIR would start getting very hot. Bump up as much RAM as you can afford. Good luck and thanks for watching the vid!
May Allah bless us with the laptop of our dreams, Ameen Very nice review brother!!!

I am looking for a lighter laptop that can replace my M1 Pro. and I heavily use AE. After seeing this, I was amazed, I think M3's speed can be at par with M1Pro or better. I'm going to buy! I need that lighter laptop for travel/coworking sessions.
I was blown away in AE also. Glad the video was helpful and thank you for the awesome comment! Good luck with your new traveler🙌
and? how is it, can you tell us? im considering the m3 air 16gb 13 inch as well for vid editing.
Nice review.

Hi I would like to ask if the MacBook Air M3 8 GB Ram 256 SSD will run FINAL CUT PRO? Without hassle ?
Great video! Thank you in advance 🙏
@@TheFloodLightShow Unfortunuetly, I was wrong, I sent my new Macbook M3 air 16GB with 512GB to Apple. I used few application like Final cut Pro, Adobe photoshop and chrome browsers just with few tabs. It was getting warm on the side and upper layer of the keyboard. Glad it helped out, thanks for watching!
Still which one has a lot of ram will wins definitely
Thanks for watching, I'll keep that in mind for future videos!
These are are not base models. They have 3x the memory.
The video is awesome but it created a cnfusion for me as I spend too much time in AE rendering😂
아직 한국에서 출시안했지만 이 영상보고 에어 15인치 16G Ram으로 결정하게 해준 영상입니다!
결정하게 해줘서 고마워요!!
I can feel with 8gb of ram on these because I’m not running huge apps that use a lot of memory, but a 256gb is insulting. Especially when iPhones can have up to 1tb
After effects need 16gb ram
Goliath and Achilles? Haha. Smile😂😊
Lol, glad you caught that. Thanks for watching and the comment, much appreciated 🙌

I can't tell you how many of these types of videos I've trawled through on YT ... I think this one is the best Ive seen. It's AE and Prem focussed, and the guy sounds genuinely bored and says things like 'shits and giggles', unlike asshole 'UA-camr personalities'.
