You sir are a legend...... I’m halfway though rebuilding all the running gear on my td5 110, and although I’m a plant fitter myself with 15 years under my belt, I’d be lost without your vids......
On top of your ability to rebuild this stuff, you manage to always be aware of what the camera needs to see, and produce an excellent educational tool in its self......
While I’m throwing spanners around and having a tantrum because my coffee has gone cold...... you are producing a bbc grade documentary..... top man.

Could you do a video on fitting a 3.54 RR diff into the dreaded Salisbury axle? There;s so much interest in the series community as more and more people are fitting TDI's need need higher gearing.

Hi Chris! Thanks for everything and I’m a happy supporter of yours, just a quarter in the hat (not much but figured every bit helps) :) quick question: I started getting a man intermittent chirping out of my rear diff, checked and it’s actually coming from the shit seal rotating independently from the pinion and the housing.
Any thoughts on the best fix? Also a deeper issue that may have cause it to slip free in the first place?
Thanks for the help and all the wisdom you’ve shared with us!!
    All the best 👍

Awesome mate, finally got the diff finished! Might have to give it all a go one day. Here's a question for you, apologies if you have answered it in a previous video. How does one test a diff on the car to determine if it needs to be pulled out and serviced? Excessive movement? Oil condition? Noises?

Dear Chris, regarding the carrier bearing bolts. The standard 8.8 hex head bolts torque up to 45 ft lb I believe. I have been told by a leading professional diff remanufacturer/off road racing/land rover driveline expert that, if you replace those bolts with 10.9 with built in thrust washers, and torque them down to 80ft lb, it gives a more secure unit under extreme loads. Apparently those 8.8 bolts can stretch on occasion, encouraging the cwheel to flex leading to failure (diff pegging reason for etc, same ball park)
So, I remember on a previous final drive vid you stated, that the bolts could have been over-tightened to give some eccentric wear on the carrier bearings. How is this possible please, when the studs go into a solid piece of cast thius preventing any squashing? Thanks very much, fantastic series of vids , awsome. Keep up the phis pal too, dont stop.

sorry chris, i was thinking 42 ft lb for cw bolts.

I was told 80ft lb for the carrier bolts 108nm, what you rekon please?

Hi Chris, bumped into Neil today at Mavern, OEM of flange retaining tool you featured on another video. Pretty much now ready to tackle my front final drive, once the head gasket is renewed that is!!

Nick Jones just finished my head gasket, likely finished yours already I assume but happy to give some lessons learned if you haven’t.

Thomas Boe-Wiegaard not quite Thomas, head off, in middle of cleaning it. Its straight no matter where I check which is good, just ordered a set of bent feelers like Chris uses for rockers and I want yo check piston pretrution with my gauge so next time i can get the right sized gasket. New bolts as i dunno history of old ones but before all that more cleaning! Picked up some green cleaning pads from asda yesterday... what did you learn doing yours ??

Where can you get hold of these manuals for rebuilding these diffs

When you say you start on the left side to tighten the bearing adjusters... in relations to what? Are you starting on the crown wheel side or the pinion side adjuster? This isn't clear in the rave either (depends on the year)

Hey Mate how do I set the side bearing preload? Just by hand? Do I have to much wear if it's too loose or too fit?

@@trailerfitter2 ,, I have slamming on my 5 cylinder inline engine when moving from park . It is particularly louder when selecting reverse. Mechanic said it is the differential. It has a transaxle set up. Do you think he's right ? The car transmission has no code and change nicely. Any input is appreciated.

This might be a stupid question but you've talked about backlash a number of times but why is it called backlash?

    • @johnkemple
      @johnkemple 3 роки тому

A recoil action between moving mechanical parts.hammer hits anvil, hammer bounces.... under power, gears touch forward. When you coast or let off the throttle the gears touch on the other side or BACKside of the gear. Back stop is when the gear hits the back side of the teeth, space or distance in between front side no longer touching and back side making contact is called back lash. It could have been called someting else like distance before impact on other side of gear, but backlash seems a lot easier to deal with..lol we need it for lubrication and temperature and wear control..
