I played this game as a kid and it was on english, i am from spain and needed to translate all the text looking each word one by one on english dictionary. No regrets.
I did something similar in Final Fantasy 1 on NES when I was a kid. Good times. That's part of the reason I learned the language so quickly. I bet it helped you along as well. La practica hace al maestro.... o algo asi.
This is my favorite run of agdq2020. Awesome runer, good couch and a fun audience ... Lucky. All the trivia and positivity of this run were also really cool.
I feel bad that the Hydlide series has garnered so much disdain in the West due to their first experience with it being its console ports. In Japan, it's a beloved and highly influential computer game series that inspired the Action RPGs that came after it like The Legend of Zelda; the bush you burn with the lamp in Zelda was a reference to Hydlide. Hydlide and Dragon Slayer were developed so close together, one could argue they were both the first Action RPG if one ignores which of them managed to get out the door first in 1984.
It's basically the Japanese Ultima, had Ultima not released years before games it inspired like the Elder Scrolls, no one would buy it, and we don't understand Hydlide's impact because of that.
For anyone who hadn't watched it, I highly recommend watching Keizeron's Animorphs run first; there's a lot of off-hand comments and jokes about that run.
Thanks for that. I scanned the comments about 5 minutes into the run out of curiosity and I'm glad I saw yours. I would've been all kinds of confused about the "DOG DOG DOG" chanting.
You have no idea how happy I am to see Super Hydlide run, Virtual Hydlide was the first RPG I ever played and I think this series gets so much more hate than it deserves
Props to that part at 43:08 Or kudos, or something I picked the worst time to take a sip fro m my mug, let's just say I'm glad I have a roll of paper near me at all times
Hydlide 3 space memories is the best in the series, it sucks that this series gets so much unwarranted hate. Sure the graphics were supar, the translations were pretty bad, but Hydlide was the first for a lot of video game innovations as far as time changes, weight system, banking system, using certain items to kill certain mobs. Hydlide II was ground breaking for its time, US never got to see part II due to poor reception of the first one. Super Hydlide also has some of the best 16bit FM audio on the Genesis, that intro tune is straight fire as well as the dragon music, hell all of the sound track is awesome!
"you know what? I like realism in video games i think it always had something extra but if tomorrow i have in every rpg a "shoes stat" and i need to see the stamina of soles it's going to annoy me!" - Joueur du grenier a french youtuber
Are you sure about that? I swear in a run he did in like 2013 of final fantasy 4, essentia was there with her daughter and someone made a donation comment referencing him having a child and family and he didnt shoot it down. I guess he just went with it.
After watching the whole thing, I'm starting to see why one could enjoy it! It's got its issues, and I probably still wouldn't call it a good game, but there is something special about it. I don't think I've ever seen anything like this game before.

Ok. The guy raising the "U" cardboard everytime they say "you"
TheYtseMan the best part
What about it? Ok what?
The subtle raising of the “K” sign in response to the article reading at 33:31 is such an underrated moment.
It’s been over three years and “IT’S A JOOOOKE!” still lives rent free in my head.
I don't want music played at my funeral. I want an awful block played.
This game has All the user friendliness of a mid 80’s Japanese PC RPG but now it’s on a system where you can play Phantasy Star or Shining Force
The fact that this almost seems like a good speed game with interesting movement makes this even more entertaining.
And that's not A JOKE!!!!
Thats also kinda true with animorphs, as long as you are tilt-resistant
IschmarVI Mashups which is fucking hard to do
I played this game as a kid and it was on english, i am from spain and needed to translate all the text looking each word one by one on english dictionary. No regrets.
Same here. And sometimes the game had the text broken (missing some letters!) so you had to talk many times with the NPC's :D
@Astropathix XIII relatively
I can relate, i did this for Phantasy Star 3... For Super Hydlide, it was easier, half of the texts were "...?"

Favorite Part is the Y-letter holder throwing his sign upwards and hitting himself with it at 54:37
This is my favorite run of agdq2020.
Awesome runer, good couch and a fun audience ... Lucky.
All the trivia and positivity of this run were also really cool.
the runner is actually the founder of games done quick, mike uyama.
And yes, he is awesome.
It’s a JOOOOOOOOOOOOOKE
Keiz was just dying on the inside since the first second, and I love it.

Yeah, but Japan thought Dragon Quest 7 was a good game. They don't always know best.
I’m glad Ys stuck around (from Dragon Slayer’s creators: Nihon Falcom).
It's basically the Japanese Ultima, had Ultima not released years before games it inspired like the Elder Scrolls, no one would buy it, and we don't understand Hydlide's impact because of that.
43:32 "That crushed my breakfast! You're freaking me out that much!" got me good xDDD
"Mike please!!"
"I'm not trying to!"
"I don't believe you! IT'S A JOKE"
Amazing that this dude can do gameplay and commentary, and do a stellar job with both!
The whole Kaizack is pretty interesting to be honest, I'd love to see this game redone
Whoever thought allowing these people to have letters to hold up:
I hope you're proud of yourself.
Because you're a genius.
The energy from the pre Covid GDQs is unrivaled
Haven't been there in person but I love the 2016-2019 era of GDQ
For anyone who hadn't watched it, I highly recommend watching Keizeron's Animorphs run first; there's a lot of off-hand comments and jokes about that run.

So many good runs this year, impossible to pick a favorite
IT'S A JOKE!
17:20 Love how the chant starts out of nowhere, lol.
The energy from the runner and his knowledge of the game made this run really enjoyable to watch !
It's okay I can see a pixel, I have at least 1 more hit.
I keep rewatching this just to see Keiz's reactions
You have no idea how happy I am to see Super Hydlide run, Virtual Hydlide was the first RPG I ever played and I think this series gets so much more hate than it deserves
wait.... you really played virtual hydlide??? oh my god
Eh I'll forgive the first hydlide. They definitely should have spent a little more time on the sprites and towns in super hydlide
IT'S A JOOOOOOOKE
This is the first I've seen of it, and it really doesn't look as bad as they imply. It's janky and poorly translated, but it seems fine.
I always got the impression that Super held up better than the rest of them, if only because it was much more unique and also not a slideshow.
The chat was amazing on that run with the IT'S A JOKE!! spam
Props to that part at 43:08
Or kudos, or something
I picked the worst time to take a sip fro m my mug, let's just say I'm glad I have a roll of paper near me at all times
this is the first GDQ run where i laughed my head off in the first 20 seconds
21:32 now that's gold
Hydlide 3 space memories is the best in the series, it sucks that this series gets so much unwarranted hate.

I would donate for Super Hydlide Slowest%
It's a sloooowke!
Game came out at the wrong time. Definitely was ahead with pretty seamless day to night transitions and a weight system
Did all this game back in the day with zero guides. I’ll always remember liking this one
Take it to the smash room
this run is fantastic. reminds me of early GDQs.
My body feels reenergized.
28:44 did he just say giorno giovanna? I guess it's a jojoke?
"Y'all have bad taste," ... He says while playing Super Hydlide.
A donation from Giorno Giovanna is weirdly fitting, considering that Mike plays as Dio.
The songs... OMG... those songs....
Was anyone ever able to find that Best RPGs article they mention? I REALLY want to see what's on that list
Is someone working on Ultra Hydlide?
Hope so.
Mega Hydlide
18:30 but Mr. G&W...
The only joke here is the game 🤣🤣🤣 such an entertaining run though!
"you know what? I like realism in video games i think it always had something extra but if tomorrow i have in every rpg a "shoes stat" and i need to see the stamina of soles it's going to annoy me!"
- Joueur du grenier a french youtuber
Well jeez, I have to watch Animorphs now.
IT'S A JOKE!
… sorry, I can't resist. Poor translation ruined these "jokes".
Awful block is the only GDQ videos I watch
The runner's songs dude
😅😆🤣😂😁
Can somebody tell me what was yelled at 21:31?
"Take that to the smash room"
I think it might be 'Take that to the Smash room!' but I'm not 100%
Brossentia has a husband?
That's sweet, I'm happy for him!
I've always thought the essentia 4 meant he and Essentia was married! LOL! Whooops.
Are you sure about that? I swear in a run he did in like 2013 of final fantasy 4, essentia was there with her daughter and someone made a donation comment referencing him having a child and family and he didnt shoot it down. I guess he just went with it.
Those are some nice signs
It's a Joooooooooke!
So, if Virtual Hydlide is Published by Altus, does that make it Dark Souls before Dark Souls?
LUCKY!
More RPGs need silly joke items!
DIO!
Lucky! (x24)
Is that a JoJo reference?
It's a jojooooke
Just further proof FUN IS NOT ALLOWED at GDQs amirite, dude said so himself
IT'S A JOOOOOOKE
(as in, I effing love this block and this run)
It's joke!
What an awesome game!
it`s a joke!
L U C K Y
ha ha ha, it's a joke
Joke is it?
Man what a shitty game this seems like! Nice run however-
