Really sorry that you are going through this right now William.
One thing I’ve learned in the last 9 years is that you can’t “out improve” these sorts of comments and the sorts of people making them.
When I started Kurzgesagt I was alone and it was also just fun and exciting to just upload stuff. But a small percentage of people were mean, waved off all the work put into them and pointed directly at all my insecurities. “They are probably right” I thought (and to be fair, some of them were!). So I tried to do better and put even more time into the videos, did more research, worked harder. As time went on I began to hire people, improved our processes further, did even more research. We started to talk to experts for every video, began documenting the sources, put hundreds of hours into our research process. Thousands of hours into each video.
And what did it do on the negativity front? Nothing. It changed nothing.
The amount and tone of mean comments that just wave away all of our effort is still the same. Constructive criticism is important of course and we learn from it - but often it is not constructive but judgy and nitpicky or mean or waving away all our work from their armchairs.
It took me a long time to accept that there is nothing I can do to change that but doing so made UA-cam fun again. It is much easier to focus on the 98% that love what we do, nowadays. Your content is great and you are such a genuine creator, its sad to see you are having such a bad time. I have no smart thing to end this comment on.
Just: It is possible to get back to a point where it is fun again and you can focus on what you want to do. - Philipp

The people that view the world as a negative until it becomes a positive instead of seeing the world as a positive until it becomes a negative are the people that act this way. It's sad, but most of them don't feel they get their share of attention, and so they act out in this way. It's sort of childish, but they honestly don't know any better in that they think it is fine to say anything to anyone at any time they want without it causing issues.

The only negative criticism I have is you made me laugh so hard with the phone case video that I embarrassed myself in front of my family Christmas Eve, laughing like a maniac at a man in a dress, hitting himself in the groin with an automated wooden pole.
Edit; On a more serious note, I greatly value the contributions you have made and will hopefully continue to make. I'm struggling, like many, and to have a genuine laugh in a terrible time is incredibly invaluable. The negative comments are probably from broken people, beat down by life or butts for brains, and I hope they don't continue to live rent free in your head. But I value your sanity and peace more than my laughs, and hope that whatever you choose to do, it continues to make you smile along with the people around you!

Yup. Same thing on my channel -- even 99% good... there's still 1% bad that you can't just not notice. After reading half a million comments on my channel... well that's still 5,000 negative ones (a full length novel worth!).
I thought it'd get better when I grew a team, and wouldn't care so much about comments on my teams videos that I'm not even in... nope, now that negativity hits twice as hard because it's like attacking my family.
It's certainly not weak. We're just human.

The comments stating you changed are crap, you are the same and the spirit of your videos is the same. I love your content and it sucks to hear that good feedback gets swept under the rug just because the majority of feedback is good. This video taught me that If I write a positive comment on a video, it would help the creator if I specify why I think his videos are positive. Your videos are great because you are a cool dude. This video was amazing because of the giant cohones it took to make it, because of the smooth flow of the personal story combined with the interviews in the end and because it was genuine. Hey! My son found your channel, so we've been watching your videos, and I just watched this one. (This will be a positive comment.)
    1. You're not weak. The people who are, remember, deliberately trying to hurt you, know exactly what they're doing, and are doing it on purpose. Usually this isn't the first time they've done this, which means they're not a beginner at it. You're not weak for feeling bad when someone who literally practices making people feel bad makes you feel bad.
    2. I really like this video. Because I've never seen anyone else on UA-cam say exactly what you're saying here, that even though most of your comments are positive, the ones that aren't are biting and affect you in a very outsized way. I'm not a successful UA-camr, and there's no way I would know this if you didn't just say it, and it really should be something everyone who wants to release videos to the public learns BEFORE they start doing that.
    3. Having other UA-camrs answer this question is one of the most brilliant ideas I've ever seen. And I bet it's even one of the most important bits of the video for you--you can remind yourself from now on that this stuff affects everyone who creates videos like this, that it's absolutely not just you.
So, thank you so much for this video. It's amazing. I'm now subscribed, with the bell on, and I'll keep watching your stuff, because this video is this good and this important. What are you going to do in the future? There's no fucking telling because you can't predict what genius will do next. :)
Thank you so much for making this, and for making all your videos. You've affected who knows how many people positively, and that's going to keep happening as long as your videos stay up and people see them, even if you never make another video. Thank you so much for everything you've already done and for being so unbelievably brave enough to do even more.

There's watchers who want youtubers to fail if they're not making EXACTLY the videos they want you to make - I don't call these people fans, they don't offer constructive criticism, they're just hate-watchers. I appreciate this video a lot. I think one reason that negative comments bother me so much is that I can't really imagine a situation where I would leave a negative comment on a video. I think I often make the mistake of thinking that other people on the internet share similar values in that regard, so knowing that, whenever I get a negative comment, it feels like whatever I made must have pushed that person to such an extreme place or that I am just so annoying that listening to me talk got them upset. IF I were to leave a negative comment, it'd be on a video that is hateful and harmful (but even then I probably wouldn't as I wouldn't wanna give it engagement), so when I get them, I think a part of my brain assumes that whoever making the comment is a rational person that I pushed over the edge. And obviously most people who say shitty things don't give it a second thought, but still it sticks.

    • @owentwo982
      @owentwo982 2 роки тому +6

I completely feel that. I always try to ignore negative comments and arguments, but it can hurt so deeply that someone would take the time to write out something hateful about me, or other people, considering I could never bring myself to do the same. I feel a lot for other people, so I have a habit of taking on other's anger, too, and blaming myself. I guess the best thing to do is remember that, those people that are hurting you, are doing it because they've been hurt, too. It's not about you, it's about them, and their inner struggle. It helps me understand it a bit, and get by and not internalize it so much.

I know I'm super late, and this probably won't be seen, but anyway
This hits deep. I really feel terrible for all the creators that have to suffer through this, especially you. You don't really deserve to receive so much hate and baseless criticism.
I'm not sure how true or well known this is, but I've heard this somewhere and it stuck to me. One reason why negative comments may affect you so much might be because you've gotten so much positive comments and been taught them so much that you've basically become used to them, and you start to dispose of them in your mind. Especially when you're proud of your work, you expect all the comments to be positive (even if you know that it's completely unrealistic, and that's okay!), or at least have only a couple negative comments that can easily have their minds changed. However, you might not be as used to seeing the negative comments as the positive ones, and thus you don't push them away as much as you know you should. Again, I'm no psychologist and I have no idea how true this theory might be, but I feel really bad for William. He shouldn't let these comments get to him, and I know he's trying his hardest not to. Thank you for reading.

be advised that the field of study is very maths intensive if you go to uni (at least here in germany), so I'd recommend focusing on maths, physics and computer science (if your school has that) in school. or go with a Bachelor of Engineering from like a college instead of a Bachelor of Science from a uni if you're more practically inclined.

Every time I watch one of your videos, I'm awestruck by how much joy and creativity can come from your bias towards action -- just getting started on a project without a clear path -- because in many ways I have the opposite temperament. So seeing that you can also get stuck in your head is a really powerful reminder that we usually only see the sliver of you that makes it to the edit. I get that piling on the positivity will never completely erase the cynicism and snark that looms over you, but for what it's worth, I love what you do, and I appreciate it even more knowing how you've struggled.
