I'm in my forties. The best thing about my collection is having all the consoles and games I used to have and want as a kid, and discovering all the games I missed from the '80s and '90s. I've been collecting for the past 6 years and it's been so fun and fulfilling. The only newer consoles I have is the switch and 3DS. I love adding new sega, nintendo, and Super Nintendo games to my collection. I just bought Splatterhouse 3 and Turtles 3. Gonna be a fun weekend.

@@jessemcilvenna2980 that's the problem lol. Past couple of months can't stop thinking about the PS2. Had fun with it decades ago been thinking about revisiting it. But then what? I don't know if I want to start collecting for it. I already have about 700+ games in my collection. All killer no filler. I don't know if I want to keep going. I sometimes have thoughts about selling everything and only keep my original NES stuff. My original plan was to only collect for NES and have an epic collection for it. But then my desires grew.

@@alienio4970 Yeah dude that shit happens. The collection starts to balloon and stress you out, then you want to contract. My advice is to think of the whole thing as your hobby. You buy up a bunch, contract it down, then maybe buy up in a different direction, contract, etc. It's all fine if you are having fun. The collection and the playing are really separate things. For myself, every six months or so I go in a different hobby direction, I embrace it. Books. Music. Miniatures. Games. Sell. Remorse. Buy. hahah.

Retrobird- QUICK little story for ya! My copy of Super Mario RPG is the most meaningful thing in my collection. Long story short, I got hit by a car - on my bike ride home, after getting it from EB games. The game (and I) both survived the crash. As for the bike I was on, and my helmet - were destroyed. When I got home from the ER - I was freaking out that my game was broken or lost in the crash somehow (it was in my back pocket at the time of impact), but my mom brought it to my room after I woke up the next morning. I was 12, with a broken leg, and played the game for the next week straight while NOT at school. I was 12 (29 now), and it’s one of the only games I kept from my childhood, before getting back into retro gaming years later. Sure, I have more expensive and rare games now…. But this one has that history behind it. I’ll never run out of new games to play, or add to my collection, because there’s always new ones to discover and try. but I’ll never get rid of this cartridge. To this day, I still play it once a year.

The problem is that it doesn't even really end with the games. I used to love the posters that came in Nintendo Power when I was a kid, but I ruined most of them by tearing them out roughly, attaching them to my walls with tape and not storing them neatly when they weren't on display. I'd love to run into somebody selling those in great condition at a convention sometime.

I used to think I hated shoot 'em ups, and essentially ruled out the possibility of me getting a TurboGrafx-16 because of it, however a couple months ago I thought about how I did like Galaga, even though that was a shoot 'em up game, which made me try some other good ones and I then realized I liked shoot 'em ups, I was just avoiding them! The nice thing about owning a thing is you can forget about wanting it any more. Get yourself a Virtual Boy and never look at another Virtual Boy auction again or waste any more time and energy wondering if you ought to bid on it, because you already have one. And if you never play it, well at least your mind will be free.

One of the reasons why I started collecting "Everything" for all of my consoles was I didn't have enough time to play all the games but wanted them on the cheap. One thing that surprised me was when I have felt most content about any of my console collections. For example: I sold most of my almost complete n64 collection to help pay down my mortgage a few years back. I kept 30 games from it but sold the rest saying I would start the collecting for the n64 again. However, now I feel fairly content with where it is at and I am actually playing them now! I think just the fact of owning them at one point was enough to give contentment over that console.

I'm not really a collector as I've learned I don't always even play the games I collect. It used to be collecting for the sake of collecting which gave me less time to actually enjoy _playing_ a game. I realize I can't play everything, so I usually ask myself before a purchase: "Will I actually play this game soon?" If the answer is "yes" then I consider picking it up.
This never was an issue as a kid as I rarely got games, so the games I owned were more valuable to me. Also, there were way less games to actually choose from in the 80s and early 90s (compared to today), so it made choosing games to add to my collection a whole lot easier! 😅

I will never ever forget the grim fate of my Sega Saturn collection. In about 2004 (I was 11 or 12) my older brother's friend gifted me his Saturn with about 10 games, including Shining Force III, Panzer Dragoon II Zwei, and a complete copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga. I was ecstatic because I had always loudly expressed interest in the unattainable Saturn and it was like a dream come true to suddenly have one. Fast forward to a few years later after I had most of my fun with it. My dad was purging our home of old clutter. The Saturn ended up on that chopping block and I approved because the console and controllers were pretty janky and didn't always work right. Plus it was "old and undesirable" by then. The console was tossed in the trash and I sold off the games for a fraction of what they're worth now. This decision will haunt me for the rest of my days. It keeps me up at night. For that reason my collection will never feel totally complete.
On the other hand I more recently lucked into a cheap Virtual Boy and six games from a friend. It certainly soothes that old wound a bit.

My main goals are the consoles themselves (no crappy Virtuaboy, sorry), it's just a question of doing it slowly and enjoying every step:
    1. Buy all retro consoles / handhelds I want (done)
    2. Get enough wired controllers (done)
    3. Get at least 2 original/3rd party wireless controllers for older consoles (about half-way done)
    4. Jailbreak / Everdrive / Mod / repair consoles (all but 2 are done)
    5. Buy enough Memory Cards / HDDs to fill up with the best games (almost done)
    6. Get RGB cables for non-HMDi consoles (still to do, lowest priority)

Gladly my ambitions for collecting the whole collection of a console has faded away.
Although I have to give kudos to some people who do these complete collections, because they are the ones who are part of preservation games. Without them, even emulating wouldn't be able. On the other hand people who fall into an unhealthy collecting habit, told me, after they finished a collection they've described themselves as feeling empty.

buying games is simply an addiction. It's a strong drug with the power to distract you from your shitty life. You say to yourself you're a nerd but in fact you are nothing more than a shopping victim. It's not possible to recreate your childhood with that mentality. As a kid you played what you had. Thats the fun healthy part. To think about all day what you don't have..is the toxic sick part of grown ups with too much money. Sorry for my bad english. Great video. I don't think everybody will grasp how thoughtful this clip actually is. Greetings from germany.

I’m definitely the guy stuck between Adventures of LoLo and Elden Ring. Last night I was torn between Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies on 3DS, Donkey Kong Country 3 on SNES, or Smash Ultimate.
To answer your question, the three things that make my collection feel most complete are my CIB Virtual Boy with Wario Land and other games, my CIB Chrono Trigger, and my copy of Smash Bros Melee. I don’t play my virtual boy, but you described it well, it’s just cool to have and show to friends, especially those who have never heard of it. I started Chrono Trigger but haven’t finished, stopped years ago. Just got busy. Really what I love is the amazing deals and prices I got on those CIB pieces years ago, especially with how much they go for today. And finally Smash Melee because that has been my absolute favorite game since I’ve played video games. That’s expensive too these days, and having my personal favorite game makes me happy. Wish I had a manual for it though 😞

I always say to people that want to start a collection, that they should ideally enjoy the process of collecting itself, otherwise they would get discouraged or stressed out.
And I really enjoy it, going to retro game stores and flee markets, hunting for the best prices. So in truth I collect not only because I like playing the games or find them interesting, but also because I enjoy the act of collecting itself. So really my collection will be complete when the day comes that I am bored of the activity or something like that I don't have enough room or money, and even then, there is always smaller and cheaper games.

As a kid growing up in the 70's and 80's in a single parent home, I had to get used to the fact that I wasn't going to get everything I wanted....especially considering that I had a younger brother that wanted stuff too. When the Atari 2600 came on the scene, it was an exciting time. Finally I could get an experience at the arcade in my own home! Now it was a bit unreasonable to expect my mom to buy an arcade machine and besides....Where would we put it? The Atari 2600 was (if you'll pardon the pun) a game changer. Asking my mom for games seemed like an easy thing now......until you look at the price tag.....$52.99 for Pitfall! $48.99 for Q*bert! Yikes! While my brother and I did get those games, there were so many games I wanted that my mom couldn't afford to get them all. We had to be satisfied with a total of a dozen of them. I had a great time with those games as a kid....but as time passed and I became an adult, I realized that my love for video gaming hadn't really subsided. At first, I wanted to get some of the games I never got as a kid.....and then it progressed to "games I didn't know about but probably would have liked". I found eBay in 2006 and my collection really took off. By 2012 my collection was up to 3,179 games and has been climbing ever since. Will I ever get to a point when I stop collecting? I thought when I reached 10K I would call it......but I reached that total and found that a few key games still hadn't been secured. It's been 3 years since I passed that milestone and there are still games that elude me.....only now those games are holes in my collection keeping me from complete libraries. My passion for collecting has morphed from getting certain games that I remember wanting as a kid to getting all American releases for almost all American systems and yeah.....maybe throw in a few Japanese systems as well. Oh..I didn't know that European system existed! Let's collect for that one as well......Arghhhh...I can't stop! LOL

This is a serious subject, as I'm terminally ill. However, I have over 12,700 games, 337 consoles, and I've completed 40 console libraries. Moreover, I've finished over 4,500 games. Either way, I always desire to finish just one more game, but as for getting more games, I'll probably be mostly finished by 14,000+. I have almost all of the retro games, with only a few not complete, and those that aren't complete need just a few more games to complete the library.
As for modern gaming, I don't actively collect for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X or Switch. I do have games for those, but ONLY what I will play now. Thus my collection ends with the 360, PS3, and Wii U. I've completed the Wii U, and I'm close to 200 games away from completing the Wii. After that, there just isn't much that I care to collect for. That will basically leave the PS1-PS3 and the 360.

Big fat nope. I don't have much of a collection outside of ROMs and emulators. I've grown pretty accustomed to downloading what I want, when I want, firing up the game on my PC, and tinkering with the settings in order to make the game look its best and perform its best (for my hardware). I've done this to maaany many games already, and the more I do it, the less I desire owning real retro consoles. It means a lot to me to see console-only games looking and running far better on modern PC hardware than on their respective systems. I find it fascinating. I mean… unless you plan to never buy another game for the rest of your life, the answer to this question is “no”. But I think this question is really more about *retro* game collecting. What I’ve noticed is that once people’s collections grow to a certain size, they kind of can’t stop. That’s why I’ve always had more of a curated collection of games that, you know, I will actually be able to play. People with basements with thousands of games will always perplex me. That doesn’t feel like someone who loves playing games. That feels more like someone who loves *owning* a lot of games. They are different things.

The best part, is that I can sell off some games I don't really care for, and put that towards the more expensive ones I do really like. Plus, a bit of downsizing is always good.

My collection may someday be finished! I have quite a few things I wanna do and I've been downsizing my collection. I'm pretty proud of my english copy of Witch's Wish for the DS! I got it for $5 because it was missing the manual. If I find that manual then it'd be worth a lot more but I don't plan on ever giving it up. Having the manual would just be extra bragging rights. I have a GameBoy Advance SP platinum with backlight that I don't usually use and only 4 games for it. I think I may part with it someday but that's a big decision to make since the retro gaming market is on fire. I probably will never be able to afford it if I sell it. Good thing that I'll be replacing my Switch Lite with a Splatoon 3 OLED at some point. I'll get a bit from selling that old console. Yeah, eventually my collection will be completed but I wanna have at least 1 game I can swap out if a cooler game comes out.

Hello, I am once again commenting to say that being almost 18, and starting a game collection in 2020 was one of the hardest things ever. I always wanted to get a somewhat hefty ammount of GameCube games because I always looked on eBay and prices always hovered around $30 for a lot of games. I never had the money nor had the resourses to do so.
My family basically forced me to buy games off of Amazon (which had the most inflated prices) and they always encouraged me to spend birthay money at somewhere like a toystore because the only video game store thats close to us is a GameStop which is about 5 towns away. It wasnt until I reached highschool when my parents trusted me to do online shopping, I caught a deal at the start with a $72 GameCube and a copy of Shadow the Hedgehog with no manual for $15, but it was all downhill from there. It's sad to say, but the barrier for entry for young people and retro gaming is at an all time high. Thus, peeps who try and get "hefy collections" are mostly adults with high paying jobs who can legitimately afford the high dollar items.

    Here's a tip
    - Collect that you play and would replay. I only have good games in my library, nothing else. When you finish a game, eventually after a long time you forget it. Then you can play it again as a somewhat new experience.
    - If you need that original cartridge feel, I suggest buying Repro's and an HD clone console. The Retroad Snes for example which I bought on Aliexpress is a very decent console. Repro cartridges work well and offer a similar experience for a quater of the price. People say they don't work or damage your system, it's bs. They work great!

I could leave a game collection for my kid that she has to deal with when I’m gone…or I can save the money and leave more money for my kid. If she loves the retro games, great! If not, then I’d just be leaving her a mess to deal with.

I have only have a small collection of games for each of my five favorite retro consoles (the two above plus Atari 2600, NES, and N64).
