This dude just described my entire collection journey 😂 I wish I would’ve seen this 4 years ago! I’d say I’m in 3.0 right now, I moved 3 months ago and set aside all the duplicates and other titles I didn’t want during the time. Went back to actually playing through and beating all the titles I have. It felt way better and I got a badass trade!! I couldn’t agree more with the philosophy of all killer, no filler. This stops the cycle of over buying and makes your game room way more enticing than a “complete” collection. Lastly people get blinded by the museum style collection & display because of fancy videos!! Game rooms should be approachable and friendly, not 10 foot shelves and aisles of shovelware 😂 i could go on and on what a great video🤘🤘this dude gets it
I can't wait for the personal conversation with each game videos! On a more serious note, I love collection 3.0 and I hope that more people take this idea to heart.
In 2010 I decided by design to be a serious "3.0" collector, only games I love from the past & the games I discovered later that fit my taste in games & genres I seriously see myself enjoying. Nothing more, nothing less, zero filler & a vastly more realistic goal that's attainable.
What epic timing! I have almost 5000 games alone. Let alone collectibles, CIB consoles, toys, etc. Almost 2 weeks ago I decided that I'm done. I want my life back. Money could be placed into more important things. Space could be used for something else that i will actually use instead of a dusty museum. I'm selling everything in my basememt rec room to condense it down into a single small bedroom. I have no idea how i will do it but it has become apparent that I need to for my mental health. FOMO can stick it. Its no longer fun, it turned into unnecessary pressure on myself to have the biggest and best collection. And I had never intended on that. Thanks! I needed the reassurance and support apparently. 3.0 here I come!
The accuracy of this video is crazy! I’m in Collection 2.5, still trying to control the urge to buy anything and everything, but it has gotten significantly better. Anything I haven’t played, I only buy at a really good deal, so that if I don’t enjoy it, it goes into a trade pile for something I know I want. I also found that instead of buying games that I’m not sure of, I tend to enjoy saving up for a CIB console, because they are really cool to look at and you can relive that Christmas morning feeling if you want to unbox it and set it up to play. I also find that everdrives and sd card mods really help cut back. It’s a cost effective way to try games you haven’t played and test out grails before you drop big bucks on them. It essentially has really helped me to only keep absolute favorites for my collection, because I can still scratch the itch anytime I want to play something different.
I semi-recently got it in my head that going for a full original Xbox set would be a good and fun idea. A couple days ago I looked at my shelves and thought what the hell am I doing? I do love that system, but it’s like 85% games that don’t actually mean a thing to me. I’m going to sell most of it, buy a few Xbox heavy hitters that I really do want, and put the rest in my pocket. I can easily get fixated on stuff like this and it kind of gets away from me. I’ve been spending more time looking for games online than I do playing them. Good video, and a healthy reminder for some of us.
Great video! 3.0 is definitely a strange stage to be in but it feels so much healthier. I’m now super selective (compared to what I used to be) about what I pick up and it has to be something that truly excites me! I’m on this odd kick that I love of picking up the Japanese versions of iconic N64 and SNES games. Over the last several months I have sold off a big chunk of my collection. I miss the idea of having a big $$$ collection, but it’s more curated and enjoyable now.
Man this would tough for me. I am a full set collector dont think I could do it. But respect your respective on 3.0. Want to keep my collection and give to my kids. I have about 1560 games right now. Great video and also a reseller to fund the collection and wasnt a nightmare to me lol.
I just moved, 250 games & 5 consoles. I have nooooo ideaaa how it would feel to move 1,560 games from one house to another without misplacing or damaging anything😂 props to you for keeping such a staggering collection, I couldn’t handle complete sets lol
3:05. Youuuuuu're fiiiiiiiired!!!!! I have been often spending so much because I wanted to not forget about a game. Now I just add them on a list. Time often gives better perspective as to what is worth getting. I just got Visions of Mana, which I was actually excited for and want to play right now! After that, back to backlog until Ys X!
I was looking for a video with an example of a spreadsheet for game collecting and stumbled upon this ride. What an unexpected turn of events... Do I even need my collections? My comics, my records, my video games? All of my instruments? I don't even really play them all. I wasn't looking for an existential crisis, but I found it, and in that trip you happened to find something as well - a new subscriber. I really look forward to hearing more from you!
Great video! Collection 3.0 feels like the most fulfilling way to enjoy games. I’ve parred down significantly to one or two live service games (RuneScape and whatever else I’m feeling at the time haha) and a small physical collection of games that mean a lot to me: - 30 Gamecube games that I always wanted as a kid (some childhood games, but mostly stuff I rented or wanted back then) - Softmodded PSP for when I wanna try something new (got this after the GameCube as a kid and enjoyed a ton of cool PS1 games this way) - Boxed copies of the “third release” Gen 1-3 Pokémon games (my adult grail) and a GBA flashcart. It’s insane to collect any and everything I tried and as I get older the reality sets in that it’s just stuff and you will probably never find time to actually enjoy all the stuff you have collected. The stuff I have no nostalgia for is fascinating but is more a novelty than anything.
Dude, I thought it was just me who was thinking about curating the collection, a few months ago, I sold all my handhelds, GBA, DS and PSP. I felt really good getting rid of them because I hardly used them. great topic!
One word- everdrives! The best decision I have ever made! They do not take up alot of space, cost way less than a whole collection, and you can play any game you want from the library!
Last August, I realized I didn't have much attachment to PS2. Paired down about 270 games to 42. Felt good. Most of them I got rid of, were cheap pawn shop finds anyway when I was going hog wild on Collection 2.0 lol
I have a collection of Xbox 360/one games with the goal to complete a full set of Gamepass that are 1st party games. I think the only games I'm missing are Halo games, Forza Horizon 1&5, PoE, & the fable games,
Bro...this video is GREAT advice for people. Living the 3.0 life is the way to be. Keep the things that mean the most to you, not based on the value. This is sound advice for any type of collection.
I’m all about that 3.0 life. And even though I try to not over-collect, I’m constantly looking at my collection and asking myself, do I really need this?
We are constantly working towards 3.0 Since we did the purge video series and can't even remember what we got rid of we realized just how much filler we actually have. It was eye opening. Another great way to pair down is to get rid of duplicates on another console. This is something I struggle with especially when it comes to survival horror. At the end of the day in 2023 i consider myself much more of a gamer then a collector. I just want to enjoy what i have.
I just started collecting last year. I'm focusing on Compilations, Remasters, & collections to cut down the ammount of space that is needed. Rare Replay, Mass Effect Trilogy LE, Spyro Trilogy, Crash Bandicoot Trilogy, Advance wars 1+2, Final Fantasy 1-6 pixel remaster, Bioshock collection, etc.. Between my Wii, 3ds, Switch & Xbox Series x & taking advantage of backwards compatbility. I got access to Gamecube, wii, (wii u ports on the switch) + a few xbox, 360, xbox one. I'm at a total of 150~ games.
I started video collecting this year. I've collected things before (toys, books, etc) so I know how important it is to keep a clear goal and not over spend. Space, money and time, afterall. I decided to only collect Mario games starting with the switch. I will try to 100% the games before buying the next ones. Or at least finish story mode and then go back to 100%. Some games can be tough and frustrating at times and collecting items can be boring grinding. So it's very important to have fun too and take breaks or just stop if you're not having fun. I chose Mario since I have fond memories of playing with my older brother.
I have broad interests in different games, so I have a large game collection. I'm sure other collectors probably have some of the same stuff and just see it as filler, but I don't. I've always researched and curated. But I never really understood why it is in video games many consider so much to be "filler", but so little to be essential. While most essential lists are roughly the same games every time. Variety is the spice of life, I enjoy having a lot of different stuff in the game collection.
Totally understandable! I'm narrowing my focus these days into the things that I absolutely love. I don't have time to play even the mediocre stuff anymore.
I'm the complete opposite. I'm mainly into rts, 4x, simulation, rpgs, & arcade racers. Choices RTS: Age of Empires, starcraft, warcraft, age of mythology, halo wars, dune spice war. Yet 5/6 is own by microsoft 4x: Civilization, human kind, or (Ara = a new release from microsoft) Life simulation: Sims 4... no competitors City Simulation: City Skylines, Simcity 4, or Simcity 2013 A-rpg: It's either Diablo 3, Diablo 4, or Path of Exiles MMo-rpg: It's either WoW, Guild Wars 2, Black Desert Online, or Final Fantasy 14 online. J-rpgs = Mostly Square Enix or Nintendo's pokemon (Plenty of other games out there)
I'm currently going for 3 complete sets. Other consoles I'm just trying to collect what I actually want to play. OG Xbox is so cheap. Sometimes it's hard to turn those down though.
Sometimes I feel like “Collection 2.0” is somewhat important since you can only experience how bad it is instead of people telling you how bad it is, so you can genuinely think about what really matters to you. Also I feel like many people have gone through the collection 2.0 phase especially retro gamers trying to buy games in the 2000s when game prices were so low.
I'm going through collection 2.0 & 3.0 at the same time. I bought a bunch of xbox one games that range are on gamepass + ea, ubisoft, take two, etc. I picked up a 100 games and I'm gonna be slowly phasing them out on a best of genre / series.
Sorry I havent supported in a while!! Hopefully I can come on more bro!! I saw your video a while back about supporting smaller channels and Im trying to get into that! We need the oldschool youtube world back hahaa
This was a really great video. I definitely have too many right now. Probably around a thousand or so.... way too many consoles too.... I think I'm just gonna just chalk it all down to keeping only nostalgia/memory related stuff and games I REALLY want to play.... anything I sold that I find I want to play later I'll just get it again. Thanks man great video
There are some fun exercises here; the memory one would be nifty to try out for sure. I've gone through so many stages of collecting in my life, starting over multiple times, that I'm at the point where I'm kinda numb; like it doesn't feel like too much stuff, but I'm also never out there desperately looking for anything. I've got that personal holy grail, so I'm good there. I'm not influenced by UA-camrs on what to buy and I never have a response to the classic convention question of "what are you looking for." It's all just this weird grey area that I live in and dogs think is so colorful. ha ha I do like your final message in making memories; one of our biggest flaws is that we do not make the time to play games...buuuut, anybody who knows us knows we're constantly doing stuff and, well, making memories. We balance out living in the moment and collecting those memories, in picture and video form so that we can look back and not have to rely solely on our brains. Which, full circle, is why the memory game with games would be fun to try because my brain? Yeah...
I’m starting a video game collection. However I am being specific and thematic. 1. Choose a manufacturer (my case PlayStation) 2. Pick specific genres (mine: platform, racer, fighter, RPG & Shooter) 3. Collect ONE favorite game from each genre in the manufacturer’s console catalog (I’m starting with ps2 & ps3) So my definitive collection so far are: PS2 Platform: Jak & Daxter Racer: Midnight Club 2 Fighter: Tekken 5 RPG: Dark Cloud Shooter: Grand Theft Auto Vice City PS3 Platform: Sly Collection (yes it’s cheating) Racer: Modnation Racers Fighter: Mortal Kombat 9 RPG: Deus Ex Human Revolution Shooter: Uncharted 2 My belief is to curate a collection of favorite games. The best of the best. Some unfortunate games will be left out. But the favorites still remain.
I do the same, but also to condense further I'll pick up compilation, collection, or remasters, remakes /ports. To cut down on the amount of hardware I need & plastic clutter I take advantage of the backwards compatibility on my Wii, 3ds, switch, & Series x. I got access to gamecube, wii, ds, 3ds, wii u (ports), switch, some og xbox, 360, & xbox one. My pc - mainly for pc only games. Xbox is my catch all multi-platform (for more demanding titles) Switch - is my Square Enix / 1st party exclusives / some niche titles 3ds - the games that are trapt on ds / 3ds for pokemon, dragonquest wii - is just my gamecube all in one. Racing: Forza Horizon 4 RTS: Age of Empires 2 ARPG: Diablo 3/ 4 J-RPg: Sqaure enix / Pokemon Simulation: Satisfactory, Simcity 2013, Sims 4 Compilation: Bioshock, mass effect trilogy, rare replay, crash bandicoot, spyro trilogy, Final fantasy 1-6 pixel remaster, castlevania collection, contra collection, sega genesis collection, neo geo collection, etc..
Dude, collector therapy time! Can't wait to see you play the "Memory Game" 😅 I'm not sure I could wittle down to 20 per console...some consoles. Tbh, all the Wii games could go and I wouldn't even notice 😂
Great video!!! Lots of people get burnt out when doing 2.0 I traded up for little samson by selling all the games I didn’t want including all my Sega games since I never owned the systems growing up. ✌🏻
Some of the games I have in my collection I just got just because, so I’ll sell them. The rest of the games I have in my collection are from my childhood and others I’ve played and I loved.
I feel like my wife asked you to target me directly. 🤔 😜 In all seriousness, I love this so much. It’s requires an honest, introspective look at one’s collection and the habits that build them. What a thought-provoking checklist to form meaningful collections built by being deliberate and discerning! A++ video, Dr. Pac! 💪🏻💪🏻🔥🔥
Glad to know i always been a 3.0 lol. I've never ever bought a game just for the sake of it, i resell game that i don't like and only keep the good ones. (And maybe that's why i never called myself a video game collecter i just want a good physical library of games)
You mentioned that some games are too rudimentary to replay. I've noticed that everyone has a different level of tolerance for older games. Some people won't play anything except for current generation consoles. Other people go back to GameCube, but think N64 is too old because of the blocky graphics. Then there are others who don't play NES because they think it's too primitive, while Some NES fans won't play anything made before it. I'm a person who likes every console generation. Playing older games doesn't bother me. I still find some Atari 2600 games to be playable. I also think NES can be appreciated by hardcore gamers who like difficult games.
Only games that I can replay are destruction game. Mecenaries Playground of Destruction and Mecenaries 2 World in Flames. Red Faction Guerrilla. Teardown is ok problem I have with game is it is blocky. 2000-2014 Golden era of gaming. Few good games came after 2014.
I was 3.0 from the beginning. I have no Xbox consoles and no Wii/Wii U consoles because I don't like them. I don't like handheld gaming that much either. I'm more 16bit up to PS3 era myself. I aint cleaning shit pal, I sold a whole neo geo pocket UK collection of 39 games boxed/mint and I regret it every day and I aint trying to get it back at todays prices it would cost $20k.
This dude just described my entire collection journey 😂 I wish I would’ve seen this 4 years ago!
I’m scared of my conversations with my games…. Well because I’m usually drunk and I tend to pick a fight. Lol jk.
In 2010 I decided by design to be a serious "3.0" collector, only games I love from the past & the games I discovered later that fit my taste in games & genres I seriously see myself enjoying. Nothing more, nothing less, zero filler & a vastly more realistic goal that's attainable.
I’m on the cusp of getting to my 3.0 collection. It’s taken years but I’m finally there 🎉
I did a collection 3.5 sold it all only kept a few childhood treasures . Never looked back. 😊

What an intelligent and considered video. Absolutely loved it.
I semi-recently got it in my head that going for a full original Xbox set would be a good and fun idea. A couple days ago I looked at my shelves and thought what the hell am I doing? Awesome video my friend. FAST FIRST THING THAT POPS TO MIND. A game you truly regret selling?
Collection 4.0 regretting taking Andy’s advice and buying it all back plus more 😂😂😂😂 jk.
Awesome topic! Very original.
Agreed, Andy! Memories are what matter!
Your like pastor of the gaming community I've found myself stuck in collection 2.0 for a bit now thanks for opening my eyes
😂😂Thanks!
Look forward to seeing you pare down your collection.
Loved this video Andy and I am now on Collection 3.0 and dude you NAILED it with the 3 phases haha. You should write a book on this shit
Haha. I wouldn't waste my time. No one would read it.
Man this would tough for me. I am a full set collector dont think I could do it. But respect your respective on 3.0. Want to keep my collection and give to my kids. I have about 1560 games right now. Great video and also a reseller to fund the collection and wasnt a nightmare to me lol.

Bro *has this already been a YEAR?* 😵💫😵💫😵💫
I was looking for a video with an example of a spreadsheet for game collecting and stumbled upon this ride.

This was insightful and very well done! Great meeting you at Game Central Station today! It was a blast.

I'm working on 3.0 but selling stuff off is a hold up.

I'm currently going for 3 complete sets. Other consoles I'm just trying to collect what I actually want to play. OG Xbox is so cheap. Sometimes it's hard to turn those down though.
I truly enjoy the honesty - now take my rubies !
Sometimes I feel like “Collection 2.0” is somewhat important since you can only experience how bad it is instead of people telling you how bad it is, so you can genuinely think about what really matters to you. I picked up a 100 games and I'm gonna be slowly phasing them out on a best of genre / series.
Great video, man. Currently in the process of doing this right now. Actually had a few games that were instant rebuys when I saw them today.
Great video! This video makes so much sense for the person who is struggling with this issue.👍🏻
My name is Saturn Steve; I learned to trade up for the Holy Grail and PacmanCase helped!
Thank you for posting this video … something I had not given much thought but truly makes sense ….❤😢

I do like your final message in making memories; one of our biggest flaws is that we do not make the time to play games...buuuut, anybody who knows us knows we're constantly doing stuff and, well, making memories. We balance out living in the moment and collecting those memories, in picture and video form so that we can look back and not have to rely solely on our brains. Which, full circle, is why the memory game with games would be fun to try because my brain? Yeah...
I’m gonna do version 4.0 and see what happens. 😂🤣
IM a literal brand new collector so Im not even ready for 3.0 lol
I’m starting a video game collection. However I am being specific and thematic.
1. Choose a manufacturer (my case PlayStation)
2. Pick specific genres (mine: platform, racer, fighter, RPG & Shooter)
3. Collect ONE favorite game from each genre in the manufacturer’s console catalog (I’m starting with ps2 & ps3)
So my definitive collection so far are:
PS2
Platform: Jak & Daxter
Racer: Midnight Club 2
Fighter: Tekken 5
RPG: Dark Cloud
Shooter: Grand Theft Auto Vice City
PS3
Platform: Sly Collection (yes it’s cheating)
Racer: Modnation Racers
Fighter: Mortal Kombat 9
RPG: Deus Ex Human Revolution
Shooter: Uncharted 2
My belief is to curate a collection of favorite games. The best of the best. Some unfortunate games will be left out. But the favorites still remain.
I do the same, but also to condense further I'll pick up compilation, collection, or remasters, remakes /ports.
To cut down on the amount of hardware I need & plastic clutter
I take advantage of the backwards compatibility on my Wii, 3ds, switch, & Series x.
I got access to gamecube, wii, ds, 3ds, wii u (ports), switch, some og xbox, 360, & xbox one.
My pc - mainly for pc only games.
Xbox is my catch all multi-platform (for more demanding titles)
Switch - is my Square Enix / 1st party exclusives / some niche titles
3ds - the games that are trapt on ds / 3ds for pokemon, dragonquest
wii - is just my gamecube all in one.
Racing: Forza Horizon 4
RTS: Age of Empires 2
ARPG: Diablo 3/ 4
J-RPg: Sqaure enix / Pokemon
Simulation: Satisfactory, Simcity 2013, Sims 4
Compilation: Bioshock, mass effect trilogy, rare replay, crash bandicoot, spyro trilogy, Final fantasy 1-6 pixel remaster, castlevania collection, contra collection, sega genesis collection, neo geo collection, etc..
Just started getting into physical game collecting and i think i will over collect mainly because physical games are starting to disappear.
If you sell your games, you can always buy them back like Matt Wolfe. LOL
Dude, collector therapy time! Can't wait to see you play the "Memory Game" 😅 I'm not sure I could wittle down to 20 per console...some consoles. Tbh, all the Wii games could go and I wouldn't even notice 😂
No love for the Wii!
@@Pacmancase 🤣 The Wii is fine, I just don't play it.
Great video!!! Lots of people get burnt out when doing 2.0 I traded up for little samson by selling all the games I didn’t want including all my Sega games since I never owned the systems growing up. ✌🏻
Some of the games I have in my collection I just got just because, so I’ll sell them. The rest of the games I have in my collection are from my childhood and others I’ve played and I loved.
thanks for the video really helped!
I feel like my wife asked you to target me directly. 🤔 😜
In all seriousness, I love this so much. It’s requires an honest, introspective look at one’s collection and the habits that build them. What a thought-provoking checklist to form meaningful collections built by being deliberate and discerning!
A++ video, Dr. Pac! 💪🏻💪🏻🔥🔥
Thanks so much Steve!
@@Pacmancase Absolutely! 😃
Thanks for the video. I guess im 2.5 now😅
That's the hardest part! Lol
Only games that I can replay are destruction game. Mecenaries Playground of Destruction and Mecenaries 2 World in Flames. Red Faction Guerrilla. Teardown is ok problem I have with game is it is blocky. 2000-2014 Golden era of gaming. Few good games came after 2014.
my collection is 5.0 🤣😂🤣
I was 3.0 from the beginning.
*nice videos*
