  • This is the first part in a series of videos on my build of a storage server to replace my QNAP TS-239Pro II that has served me for nearly 10 years. I felt it was time to retire the QNAP and decided to go with FreeNAS. In this video I install an LSI SAS 9200-8i HBA in IT Mode, 3TB Hitachi SAS 7.2K Near Line drives, and associated cables. I also add a 120GB SSD in a DVD-style caddy for an OS disk.
    In case you need:
    Controller: amzn.to/30NuZVw
Cables: amzn.to/3hyjvM8 (these are 2.5 feet which is long enough)
    Disks: amzn.to/3f2NH0z
    SSD: amzn.to/39wqouY
    SSD / DVD Caddy: amzn.to/3hCi8fx
    iDRAC: amzn.to/30MDdwZ

You should have put the LSI controller in the other riser. That riser's 8X slots are only wired 4X.

Thank you! I have been searching for a set up Just like this!!! Simple and easy!! May I ask what is the max hard drives you could use in with that card? Thanks

Hi how you managed the RAID? I know that ZFS doesnt need hardware RAID and is not good to use HW RAID with ZFS. But R710 iperc6 cant manage HDD without RAID array?

I replaced the PERC with a HBA (Host Bus Adapter). Some cards can run in RAID 0 as JBOD. You need one of those with decent performance and FreeNAS will configure it's own software raid.

No you can’t use any perc to do ZFS. Reason being they do not support being flashed into IT mode (JBOD) where they pass the drive connection through raw to ZFS. FreeNas will use ZFS to do software RAID at full data rate of 12 or 6 GB depending on the HBA card you picked. I use two SSD and 6 x 12TB Dell drives in my R710 and it’s very fast. I have dual 6c(12c hyper threaded) with 192 GB RAM. I love the setup me have docker containers hosted within TrueNas.

Brian, have you ever experimented using a PCIe M.2 drive adapter card for cache applications? I am modifying an R710 exactly like this and I used the optical drive caddy with a SATA SSD as cache. However, I would prefer to have dual SSD cache so I am contemplating the route of dual PCIe adapter cards as it allows me to install 2 SSD's and provides power as well. Any thoughts on this?

      No. I have not.

I have that setup in both of my r710 truenas servers. I listed it in my comment in the main thread. The only difference is I am using the dual mSATA pcie card for my truenas OS drives.

Hey, what cable did you buy to connect that DVD-ROM/SSD caddy? I don't have a DVD ROM in mine, but I do have a spare SSD caddy. I'd really like to put in an SSD for my boot drive. Thanks man. Keep making more videos.

One of my servers came with it. The other didn't so I bought it on ebay: Dell Poweredge R710 Server SATA Optical Drive Cable XT618 $8.95 with free shipping. Worked great!

A better option for the r710 server, if you are installing an OS that can be cloned for redundancy like TrueNAS (FreeNAS), is to get a SEDNA PCI Express Dual mSATA III SSD Adapter and 2 mSATA 16GB internal Solid State Drives.

I wish manufacturers didn't use that plastic packaging, I've had bad experience with HPE hate them. I love the R710 recently bought one to host my mail and Web servers

      Yes..... :) I promise it's on the to-do list.
I've been hung up on where to setup a fish room among other things. I was originally going to build it in the garage, but I need that space for a workshop..... so now it's a rebuild of the shed into a fishroom. And money has been the issue for a couple of years.
I got downsized 3 years ago and swore off the corporate hamster wheel and BS that goes with it. I'd rather be poorer and free from nonsense than 25¢ richer and on a leash with some bozo at the other end of it who thinks crazy goals and insane priorities should be chased every 45 days.

    This video should be titled.
Dell R710 - Installing new drives and cards.
Where is the FreeNAS part of this video? There is nothing in this video that suggest that you are using FreeNAS on this system at all.
Looking at your other vides around this one, is you working with ESXi and an H700 card installation. no FreeNAS.
I am not trying to be an a** by any means, but when you see a title for something only to find out that there is nothing in the video about the title, it kind of defeats the purpose and is otherwise known as Clickbait.
