- Building a Freenas Server with Enterprise Hardware
Lets build my backup server. I gonna use a 2U supermicro server from a dumpster. I bought 2x Xeon L5640 cpus 6 cores 2266mhz socket 1366. I installed 96gb ddr3. Chelsio 10gbe nic and ibm M1015 with 10x 3TB hdd.

If you like to send me old computer parts please send me a youtube or twitter message!
Customs: Ah those classic Intel brand Rubber Sheets. Nothing out of the ordinary.
Thanks for the video. I'm still learning about servers myself, and it's good to see videos of people messing around with the hardware.
I see that you are a man of culture adding Dr Kleiner in the end of the video!
What kind of dumpsters are you finding? lol blows my mind. Very happy to see this video, I've been wanting to do something simular for a long time.
Dumpsters in office parks are goldmines.
Best moment to bring a hl1 classic👌 rise and shine Mr freeman 👍
I Love your enthusiasm!
Don't worry about memory!
I do run a backup server with ZFS and FreeBSD-12 on a 2003 Pentium-4 (3.0GHz) with 1.25 GB of DDR (400MHz). It has 3 striped IDE disks in total 0.89TB. My system is quiet :)
I use it for two types of the backups;
- rsync + smb for the data and
- ZFS send/receive incremental backups for my virtual machines
I backup from a 2018 Ryzen 3 2200G (16 GB) with 64-bits Ubuntu 19.04 to a 2003 Pentium-4 (1.25 GB) with 32-bits FreeBSD-12 and it works!!
Again don't worry about memory! On my main desktop, ZFS will give back memory from the cache, if it is needed for e.g. a virtual machine or another program. Besides in Linux I can define the upper and lower boundaries for the ZFS memory usage in a config file. I have hit rates of 93% for the memory cache, while limiting it to 4 GB. Also on my laptop I get ~90% hit rates with 2 GB of memory cache.
The Pentium has been built from left-overs, the case proudly presents a Pentium 4 sticker and a Windows 98/2000 sticker. Only 2 cables are connected to the Pentium: Power and Ethernet. It is controlled using a XRDP service and the XFCE desktop. I monitor the Pentium using Conky, which displays dataset sizes, free disk space and many other internals. I connect to the Pentium through Remote Desktop on a Windows 7 Virtual Machine.
The Pentium runs at 90% CPU load and that limits the transfer speed to 250 Mbps instead of 1 Gbps, but that is fast enough, because my 14 Virtual Machines are incrementally backed up in approx. half an hour. The system is only powered on for 1 hour/week, so it is mostly very very quiet.
How did you manage to keep those IDE disks alive? Is it still using the original PSU? I'm always amazed to see such machines alive and kicking in 2019.
@@cptcrogge No I have another $15 new PSU 600W, The CPU/motherboard is from a HP d530 SFF, which power supply died in ~2011. Those IDE disk have not been used for 5 years or so. Before that they were in a Pentium III small home file server, basically always powered on, but only really used infrequently by me.
My middle school uses server made in 2002 with probably similar specifications as your file backup server, but for cloud computing in informatics classroom. 20 students use it at the same time. It´s hard to describe how slow it is for even the most basic tasks. And the ministry sent tablets and smart blackboards instead of new servers, routers and network switches, which didn`t speed things up.
ik dacht al ik hoor iets aan dat acent goede video trouwens ;)
A really powerful machine from a dumpster xD
The guy's just trying to make a good movie man, he's doing his best, leave him alone. What's your setup?
@@FreeSpeechWarrior Are you new to the Internet? This was a humorous reference to a statement he made in the video. Also this smiley "xD" indicated that I meant no harm. My setup is a Super Nintendo.
@@wennesregnet I was looking for that comment so that I could delete it. I realized the same thing once I watched it I'm sorry.
The rack is coming together nicely! I rarely update the BIOS unless I absolutely have to. Pretty quiet
ik kan gwn meteen horen dat je nederlands bent hahah
Wel leuke vids man
Thank you for a great video. I have upgraded/installed tens of servers, but i never get tired of it. A suggestion is that you can design the raid from the bios setup for raid on the usb, and for the storage raid if you needed one. Cheers.
Great Video, Thank you
I’ve done loads with freenas and other open source storage projects using enterprise hardware. Just be aware of raid controller disk size limitations on older hardware. Cheap dell servers from 10 years ago etc may be attractive, but you won’t be loading them up with 10TB SATA disks. Also be aware that some of the raid controllers in these look at the disks for same brand firmware and standard drives may not work.
Awesome video again! You can consider moving your OS to an old SSD, FreeNAS and usb thumbdrives have a bad history together.
Great video, thank you! Always love to see storage builds.
Love the Sun Microsystems one U servers my friend.
Monster setup ! Existing citys around world using less energy. Hahaha
Enterprise hardware relaxes me.
Hello my friend. "Viva Alemania!" LOL. You mentioned on this video that you are not a big fan of Free Nas. What other programs do you recommend that are better or run better than Free Nas? Please let me know. Thanks. P.S. I'M GOING DUMPSTER DIVING! LOL
Silicon Valley dumpsters may have similar. But I moved 3000 miles away to a small fishing town. Not even a Radio Shack.
Your videos are great... inspirational... we do many of the same things, however I am moving more slowly as my retirement income for such toys is limited. However I am playing with an IBM Xyratex HS-1235t which is very similar to your SuperMicro server. Although I have only a single Hex core CPU and 24GB of Memory. I am having issues with USB being VERY S L O W.
One link I followed said USB3 settings should be disabled. However I have NO USB3 settings in this box. It takes a while for the server to start using USB stick to boot. However I hope to install a 1.8" Sata drive (already there) and run Linux Mint OS, VMware and run FreeNAS as a VM.
Would be interested in your experience if any with USB slowness... Frustrating ! The middlewaed takes 15 minutes to kick in... then all works fine.
Waiting for 8 Seagate Constellation 3TB SAS drives.
Very cool. I have an old VMWare server, was thinking of re-purposing and this is a great idea. Freenas with some Virtual Machines :) maybe a render farm :)
Those L5640s are great little chips. Had one of those in my old 1366 server. Switched to a Haswell E3 system, as I have it on 24/7 nowadays and the power cost would have been a lot higher on 1366. Even though the L5640 is "low power", the platform itself is not efficient by a long run. And you know how expensive our Dutch power grid is XD
Also, *thermal* paste, not "terminal" paste ;P
I love your shirt! OpenBSD! the best os
I need to fabricate that plastic cover for my server. They really do make a difference in air flow
I love the design of sun Microsystems from the 90s. Case interior perfection.
Nice setup, FreeNAS is awesome, thanks for sharing
EXCELLENT VIDEO ! Very realistic ...
I wish we had Dumpsters like that here :(
Same here, I can only find polythene bags and leftover food in dumpsters. LOL
Great video! I love the accent and the attitude. Looks like fun. I wish I could fish a server out of a dumpster. :)
Whoa. A cool build. Is there any place to buy used supermicro motherboards in Netherlands?
Goed bezig Victor!
Be glad you have the back plane that you do. The older SAS plans with the SAS connectors doesnt support higher than 2tb drives. Only the newer (same design) SAS2 black plane does. And its much more $$$$.
I love yr videos and yr accent also bro , I one question 12 HDD and 2 cables in card how will be what did use to collect the 12 cables
Ahhh, Bart. I see you're a row numbering kind of guy whereas I'm a column numbering. ;)
you can do same thing with arm architecture and with less energy consumption :)
Wow. Hey Victor, great Server! Greetings
Time for a vic's servers channel en this channel back to beige cases...💾🖥📺🖱
termal pase, lol. i like to call it thermal mayonnaise.
goes great on processer burgers
Nice Mr Victor, except for the FreeNAS thing :)
Ha ha, Synology fan :)
OpenMediaVault :-)
Beware of Seagate‘s 3TB drives. All three of mine have gone bad.
Only a certain series.
Hello , are those servers sun microsystem sunfire v 120 ??? Please explain how to boot sun microsystem sunfire v 120 .how to get access to LOM poweron command ??? How to Using the LOM poweron Command ??? How to boots the Solaris Operating System ??? I have Sun Microsystems sunfire v120 . what do you use sun microsystem sunfire v 120 for ??? Thank you!
PERFECT
Can you tell me the name of the CPU heatsinks please. Would they fit a Xeon 5620?
Nice...!!!!!.
found in a dumpster you sure are lucky
"How hard became to understand the bits nowadays, huh?!" 🗨😘🧢
hey, kan je niet een soort van een instuctie video maken om free nas op te zetten en configureren?
please can you make a tutorial on how to setup and configure free nas?
groeten vanuit Curacao, please keep your videos coming
I think FreeNAS themselves have such videos on their UA-cam channel.
what do u thibk your racks total weight is with the new setver ?
The Idea is fun but i honestly i wouldn't spend a dime on it. This kind of machine is just too old and you will see the costs in your electrical bill if you leave it running. To the people who are looking for a VMware server or Freenas, get a newer model server, like from 2013-2016 for a good price. It will be much more power efficient.. basic rule: the newer the hardware, the less power it consumes and the more performance per Watt you get. Ofcourse you can't buy new server hardware because it would be too expensive but if it's too old you're paying in another way you really need a good balance.
That's where solar comes in. Especially if you have a huge excess in reserve power. Those old servers double as room heaters in the winter too!
That's all relevant for 24/7 usage, but in this case the system will only run when doing backups.
Have you tried Unraid?
Wat ga je er voor bestanden opslaan?
Not sure if I missed it or not, I hope you are running ECC memory for the zfs partition. My plex server got massive corruption from using regular memory.
This is a myth. ZFS doesn't require ECC more than any other system. People always encourage ECC with zfs because it takes better advantage of it than other file systems can. Your corruption wad due to something else, though ECC could have prevented it.
They wrote "river shit" or river sheet?
✔🥇✔
in spain in the dumpsters all we have is trash 😂
Forrrrrget FreeNAS... Where is the UNRAID?!?! :-D
Because they can't write "CPU, scrapped from e-waste junk yard"
Je klinkt erg Nederlands.. Klopt dat?
HL 1
0:30 Wtf is a river shit?
,
I can send you one lsi sas card if you want.
Send me a twitter or FB message! :)
