  • In this powerful video, I share my experience attending a rally in support of trans rights and Queer kids. Despite facing opposition and hostility, hundreds of allies and supporters turned up to make their voices heard. We discuss the exhausting impact of transphobia and the importance of Queer Joy as an act of resistance. Join us in standing up for trans rights and spreading love and acceptance. Together, we can create a more inclusive and compassionate world.

Hi Kate. Thanks for sharing your experience with the protest. Thanks for being there! Wow that was intense. I feel so sorry for that poor child who was caught up in that. I wish we could all just live in peace. Take care of yourself. Stay safe.

I forgot to wear sunscreen yesterday and lived to regret that choice.

I’m very similar to you. I’m conservative fiscally but know there are disadvantaged communities, including tran, that need help. Looking beautiful by the way!

I completely disagree that 'you don't get to opt out'. No trans or queer person is ever obligated to expose themselves to unsafe, hateful environments, malicious slurs and vitriol from right wing bigots. Protests like this are for allies and parents first and foremost. I purposely avoided the entire thing. My mental health and well-being come first. I urge all trans and queer people to always do what's best for your well-being. Sometimes what's best for your well-being will be to 'opt out' and let those in stronger emotional places to step up on your behalf.

I was talking about being Trans rather than attendance at a protest. I agree with your comment wholeheartedly which is why I had the content warnings to start. Protect yourself, gauge your safety and avoid things that will impact this. 💛🏳️‍⚧️

@@KateMadden Fair enough. I think your framing it in the context of 'I have to go, I have no choice' made it come across perhaps in a way you didn't intend. I agree with what you said as well - we don't get to opt out of being trans, of being othered and sexualized and hated. Honestly the current climate globally, and now even in Canada - it's so triggering and infuriating. And the media coverage has been terrible and downright irresponsible, framing it as 'two sides protesting' rather than being open about how vastly outnumbered the haters are. They're making matters so much worse.

Yes, I was surprised by how even the CBC was both siding the day. It was foul all around.

Doctors and therapists need to follow protocols for kids. I think most do, but not all. We may require reasonable laws so all do. This is even the case if parents are not involved. Parental involvement is another question. Informed consent works for adults. There will always be haters. The way to disarm them is with reasonable approaches to gender care. The trouble is there are places where the haters have gained control. Peaceful protest then is the important option.
