Hey guys! In this beginner Houdini tutorial we will create abstract animation with vellum hair in houdini and take an in-depth look into various attributes.
Sidefx houdini allows for procedural approach that makes creating abstract and satisfying animations really easy. This beginner Houdini tutorial covers SOPs, Vellum, Dopnet and Rendering.

I am surprised and sad that some people claim that Nick Medukha copied other people's work when it's clearly a different work especially if you know how they approach the similar task in different ways. I am a Patreon of Paul Esteves and I've watched both tutorials and they are clearly different to me. It's absurd to say that it's copied and he doesn't respect others just because the colors look the same (although even the colors are different to be precise). If I were to copy someone else rather, wouldn't I change colors to avoid these kind of claims? This is why it's just an coincidence. Even if he meant to copy, he didn't. Because they are different. You know if you watched both. First, the geometry to generate hair is different of course because Paul's work is a torus and his work is a field. Then Paul uses colliders after an RBD sim, while Nick creatively explains how he managed to move a collider object along a curve with a primuv expression ( Thanks Nick, I learnt a new technique). Nick uses guideprocess nodes at the beginning of the workflow with a rest SOP, while Paul does the opposite without the rest SOP. Nick tries to solve the pushed grass coming back to its standing form, while Paul doesn't bother with it. Nick uses a custom DOP network, while Paul uses new Vellum solver. For hair color transitions, Paul teaches how to write VEX inside a SOP solver, while Nick solves it with a lerp function in a SOP level.... I can go on and on about every single step because they are just different. It's free to say whatever people think but I thought It was unfair for him to get this claim out of the blue when he's constantly been doing these works for many days until today for the Houdini community. Everytime, he credits the reference image and the creator before he starts his tutorial, where you can see that he is not that kind of person who is afraid to learn from others and honor them who he gets ideas from. I see many grass or similar hair tutorials out there and it's inevitable to overlap in some parts because that's how Houdini is made. Maybe it's at least fair if you claim that it's copied because you say that they use same method to accomplish the result. But just because of the color...? I'm not sure about that.

Thanks so much for taking your time to do the detailed breakdown of the differences between my and Pauls tutorials, truly means a lot to me. Let me pin this.
P.S. Also was sad to me, that unfortunately, some people prefer to rush to the comments and blame, rather than do a little (or in your case, quite a big one) research. I have my mind on why particular people do that, but ill leave that with me.
Anyhow, glad you learned something new, i also like that primuv method over CHOP method haha

The Particle Attribute Lookup up is called RS Point Attribute: just in case anyone else was confused.

at 12:39 : is there a necessity to use two Guide Process nodes instead of a single node with two operators ? Memory usage maybe ?

Good point! Don't think it would play a huge role for just 300 hairs, but in general, and obviously for a more "hairy" setup - I think you are right!

Hi, I'm having an issue at video index 28:07. The section to make more hair. After adding the hairgen 2 and hairclump, the color info is gone, it's not being transfered. Did i miss a setting?

    • @nickmedukha
      @nickmedukha  2 роки тому

Hi! Probably yes, i the hairgen (second one) there should be an option to copy attributes (or its in the hairclump) and you set it to Cd. Let me know if you find it there or Ill check it a bit later and get you detailed reply

@@nickmedukha Thanks for the reply. I did find the setting. In the hairgen node under the Attributes & Appearance tab at the bottom.

This is a tut from Paul Esteves. You didn't even bother to change the color palette. Please, don't do that is not a way to go forward with this community. If you were doing it for fun in youtube would be another story. Trying to get people in patreon with other people's stuff, its a big no no buddy.

Hey man! Thanks for the input, now I got why the other guy was commenting about.
Let me share a few facts so you have a better view on this and other tutorials.
      1. Huge respect to Paul Esteves! Unfortunatelly, I don't follow his UA-cam, and only because of your comment I had a need to scroll till his first video. His video is dated Jan 31. I initially did this effect in Jan 19th, BUT 2021 and i will be more than happy to share that ugly render i have archived from my Insta, but luckily it saves archived posts. It is based on the fallback node, which in this tut is accompanied by the attribute transfer tho. Send me a dm if you wanna see it and chat :)
      2. I am not sure if you have watched my other tutorials, but intellectual property is something I am not joking with. I once used a Daz model, painted it black and made look upwards and got a wave of hate like if I would copy another artist who also uses black Daz chars. On Reddit, I shared the sticky-tape tutorial, and while I specifically added a link to the work i RECREATED, there was a guy who pointed that "this is your inspiration", so in that case one artist copied another one and who should I have been credited? I definitely understand you and I understand what you want to bring up. If you wish, you could check a few of my tutorials, and you will see that sometimes, techniques i cover are adopted from long long sidefx and odforce forum threads. And in these tutorials, there always are credits and links to the initial source. If we are talking about inspiration and more over I don't say inspired and specifically say "recreating X work" - these people are always credited both in video, description and everything else where I post the work.
      3. For the colors - I won't argue and yes, it is absolutely your will to trust me or not, but I have not seen his work before and we unintentionally picked the simillar colors. I would have picked more techy/greyish colors, but as its Easter time I wanted to pick something more "sweet". I don't have arguments, yet I know the truth so yeah, i'm not sure i need to comment this.
      4. Oh and additional thing that I thought is crucial to mention - Judging from Pauls teaser that I have just watched, I can find similarities in like 30% of the setup.
And I think its never bad to share other 70% cause as you probably know, in Houdini, its always a thousand options how to get to the result.
anyhow, happy to chat with you. peace!

As a content creator you need to be super aware of what is going on out there so you don't step into anyone's toes. It's actually ur responsibility. Keep that in mind going forward. Peace!

@@MotionPunk absolutely true, but should be obvious that it is simply not possible to keep eye of every artwork being published. This tutorial is a great example. Im pretty sure that if there would be an AI that could scrap Instagram, we would see a lot of very similar artworks, and there is always a very thin, yet blurred line.
