I know that CarPlay works with the iPhone, obviously. But does CarPlay also work with an iPad mini 2 with wireless data? I know I won't be able to make phone calls or receive texts, but all the other functions should work right?
Hey Jose, Carplay is only compatible with the phones not iPads or iPods
Debating if I should get the appradio 4 or one of the pioneer NEX models. I am really interested in the car play feature and both units offer this. The only downside I see of the appradio is that all the usb ports and Aux cables are located at the back of the unit. What if one of the cables wears out and rips. I would have to take the entire unit out to replace it.
prison mike Pioneer includes a USB extension, so you would only need to replace that if you damaged the cable.
Quality Mobile Video Which would you say is the better buy? This or the NEX model? I have an Iphone but what if I got a Droid later? Which would be more flexible? Which sounds better? Whats the better value? Sorry for so many questions lol
The 8100NEX is a better model and it works with both, it has AppRadio for Android!

Our family has three SPH DA120 models and problems with all the screens. I contacted Pioneer and they said there are no known issues. It was just out of warranty and they won't do anything.

I just got Pioneer SPH-DA120 for my Xterra.
I have zero issues hooking up my iphone 7 via BT and listening to music/making calls...
but I do not know how to access carplay?
Also, im confused as to what wires I need to link my phone to the radio for carplay/charging, etc

You just need a USB! But make sure you're plugged into the top USB port and not the bottom

I mean does it charge very slowly because its constantly mirroring or does it charge it good like how it would at home being plugged in?

That hdmi input is the reason why I want to get this get a google chromecast and plug power in the phone charger port and use Hotspot and tada you have a mobile theater

How well does the little GPS antenna work for boosting the signal of an iPhone? Does it only boost the signal while the phone is plugged into the head unit?
Yea it boosts your phones GPS accuracy when connected to Apple Carplay!
i have pioneer 8750BT
i cannot use applecar play together with AppRadio. i have to change the setting in smartphone menu change to digital receiver in order the appradio to work. and then change back to USB1 for apple carplay to work. any solution for this?

i like how this "review" never mentions how awful the delays are between pressing a button and something actually happening. you can see it clearly in the footage. is it a good idea to press something, have nothing happen, then have to take your eyes off the road to look back at your radio and then feel the urge to press it again?
Does this also work with Google Maps on iPhone? I prefer Google to Apple Maps.
Is it necessary to use USB 2 if you want to connect the Lightning Digital Adapter to the unit in order to watch Netflix from the iPhone? I tried it through USB1 and got an "incompatible USB" error.
The USB port 1 on top is the iPhone compatible port. But the lightning digital AV adapter connects to the HDMI not the USB!

I have a 2011 STI. Would this, when replacing my factory head unit render my steering wheel controls inoperable? Can i still use the usb port in the accessory cubby?
No, they should work with the buttons on your steering wheel.
+bpshirase I've got a 2015 wrx, I think the process will be similar. You need to get a Metra Axxess ASWC-1. That will translate the steering wheel controls for the new head unit.
Does it support Iphone 7 plus? According to the manual it only goes up to iPhone 6!
Thai Tastic I just got mines installed today and yes it does work with the 7 plus. Just make sure u use a pioneer Apple certified cable or the Applecable that came with your phone. Aftermarket cables may or may not work

hi! i need a help, my carplay no connect , the radio show "incompatible USB" ... i tried upgrade firmware, i tried connected with other cables original, and others iphones and also select the USB mode on the radio and nothing ....

Gonzalo Roudergue Since I can't physically see what's going on I'm not sure what we can do. I would recommend contacting whoever you purchased it from to get either a refund or a replacement, or call Pioneer to see if they can troubleshoot it with you. There is also a possibility that it was installed into your vehicle incorrectly.
When you pair your phone to the head unit, can I still use my phone to control the music?
If you pair via Bluetooth yes, you can control from either the radio or phone. With the USB you also can control from the phone or radio, but if you connect the Apple CarPlay then its done strictly from the radio

+mike malepas Lol gotcha. Well in order to use Mirror Link you have to be plugged into the USB with your phone, so you can definitely play music and use apps like google maps at the same time, it would be the same as you could normally with your phone not plugged in!
my rav4 has 6.1 inch screen, and this model is 6 inch touch screen, can it be fit to my vehicle or it must be 6.1 inch?

It does! And not super familiar with non american models, but I'm sure it's solid

Yes. The only way to use UA-cam on a stereo is to mirror it via an HDMI input or RCA AV Inputs. This radio has an HDMI input in the back so you can mirror it using your smartphone and the adapter in this video: ua-cam.com/video/f4QOgzA0jaY/v-deo.html

Mine worked till apple decided to update OS 6months after install no more CarPlay. Contacted pioneer no use. Should go with Ken wood has better SW support

No no, It was actually a Prius C, we just used the dash as a set, we didn't install it, would have fit no problem if we did!
My bad, here in Europe the Prius C it's called Auris Hybrid and looks different and the only car that looks like that it's the Prius+, a Li-Ion powered 7 seater version of the V.

You cannot use Apple Carplay without an iPhone, that's how it uses the apps, because the apps are on your phone.

The radio comes with a USB Extension, which you'll run from the rear of the radio, through the dash and to the front when you install the radio

can you download apps onto this device without the use of a smartphone?
No you have to use your phone to download apps, the radio can't access app stores. What the radio does is it just connects to your apps and displays them and gives you control over them on the radio. You have to be connected via the USB because your phone is really the source, your phone's data is being used, the radio doesn't have its own, no wifi or anything like that.
And apps don't stay on the radio. When you disconnect your phone Apple Carplay/Android Auto will be disconnected because the apps are on your phone

im looking at the Pioneer NEX 5200 but it doesnt have an app store. can you think of any radio that has an app store and built-in navi with the rest of pioneer functions with the same size as this? double din
and according to maestro's website, their adaptor for NEX5200 isnt compatible with my car. as least i dont think it is
What's the difference between this DA120 and 8850BT?
The big differences are the SPH-DA120 is a digital media receiver, so no disc slot, the screen is capacitive touchscreen instead of clear resistive so its similar to your smartphone
Thanks for the great video. I'm looking to get a new Double Din. but here's my dilemma. I have an iPhone 6. I want to have navigation show up on the head unit, HOWEVER I'm not a fan at all of apple maps. I much prefer Google maps. Is there any Double Din that will show Google Maps while using an iPhone? I don't want to have to settle with apple maps :'( What I want is for the GPS to show up on the screen, but I still want to be able to physically press a button to skip songs while the GPS is on. Any recommendations?
+alexisgc33 Ok you have a few options. iPhone phones only display Apple Maps on head units. However, this unit has an HDMI input, so you can hack the radio and create a mirror link between the phone and radio, so the radio will display your phones screen. Quality Mobile Video quality my phone is a Samsung Galaxy 8 plus and the quality of it is excellent but it isn't excellent on the unit it's a bit dull I don't know whether there's any settings I couldn't change to make it better quality

+Daddy Hamm Okay, that sounds like you need to activate the parking brake so either be stopped or parked and try that, or you can ground the parking brake.

They could definitely streamline it, I really hope they do somehow! Then again, you're driving and that's where your focus should be. So being able to hear your texts read to you while driving is great, and it seems like replying with short answers works pretty well, so that is also great. However, don't expect it to feel like a natual "conversation" because for now you have to verbally direct Siri on what to do each step of the way.

The small green port? That is GPS Sensor to improve your devices navigation service/location/reception

CarPlay is an only iPhone/iPod thing. But the rest is compatible to any phone or media device.

Personally I don't have the time for the pseudo communication that happens with these computer devices. If it doesn't understand regularly its not worth it. Voice recondition / Siri is a complete waste
I wouldn't say it's a complete waste. It could be more streamlined for sure, and voice recognition has a long ways to go. This setup still has some use, for example reading texts while driving, and text replies like "yes/no" or "on my way" type responses. I've found that's about as good as it gets though.

+Quality Mobile Video Thanks man, will look up the models you mentioned. I just prefer this because its clean look and capacitive screen. This looks like a stock dasboard unit unlike the NEX series. And the capacitive NEX unit is too darn expensive. Plus it doesnt have a DVD slot which I prefer coz I dont use it anyway. Thanks for the suggestions!
