I have recent experience with adding both a branded unit (Pioneer) and an Android head unit to two different cars. I was able to install a Pioneer unit into my wife's Fiat 500x after cutting a bit of plastic and it's a seamless integration. It's also reliable. It boots up and Android Auto is connected with music started by the time we have our seatbelts on.
The other unit is a random Android screen that replaced the dash storage tray in my BWM E84 X1. It connects to the OEM radio via an Aux cable. It looks great and adds a backup camera as well as working with steering wheel controls. What it is NOT, however, is fast, user-friendly, or reliable. Phone calls only work right if I connect media to the head unit and calls to the car's OEM head unit. It will work with Android Auto and Carplay (wireless even), but it takes forever for everything to boot up and one needs to learn rituals and incantations to make it work. It uses Zlink5 and requires both Bluetooth and WiFi or a cable. It launches Zlink5 and fails to connect. I need to go to the bluetooth section in the software and "connect" the phone. It says "connection failed" and then Zlink5 opens and launches Android Auto. I've learned a way to get it going within about a minute, but it's not ideal. What's also not great is that updates from Google and screw this thing up, which has happened. An Android Auto update caused an audio bug wherein the music quality becomes muffled the assistant speaks. I've just manually installed an older Android Auto 10.x version onto my phone and I hope that fixes it.
The Android units are cool in the way that they're customizable, but they're not practical if you just want to drive with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. If a branded and supported option were feasible for my car, then I'd choose it. Kenwood, JVC, Pioneer, whatever.

I'm an E.E. in the U.S. and I design electronic equipment in the defense industry. I can tell you that "cheap" is not always indicative of low quality because most manufacturers source their component parts from the same outlets. However, there can be differences in the design of the "mechanical envelope" that can be deficient due to cost cutting, e.g. heat sinks and cooling but generally speaking most manufacturers are diligent and do adequate field testing, even the cheaper brands because they realize suppliers will shun them if consumers are complaining about reliability.
Warranties and support is a whole different subject and I agree that usually the more you spend the better the warranty and service.

From an engineering perspective, Audio DAC is 100% a solved, commodity off the shelf problem. There's not a quality difference in conversion since about 10 years ago. People hate to hear it, but it's true. The same is true of switching amps. High quality audio electronics just isn't actually more expensive these days, so you won't hear a difference in amp quality at almost any price; unless the engineers really fuck up, there's just not much ROI in more premium audio electronics. They are just reselling the same commodity stuff with a badge, and with retailer kickbacks / marketing budgets.

I think the real benefit of these ever evolving Android head units is keeping the big brands honest. I have been using a Kenwood DDX9906XR for a few years now and it was an incredibly expensive head unit. It has been fine and I don't regret my purchase. However, there are simple improvements that they could address via firmware but they don't because they don't have to. When I looked at replacing my headunit the one key thing I looked at was the outputs. I found the android HU were pretty low compared to the named branded ones unless you spend a fair amount like that of the Joying. This isnt to say that theyre bad, but for me the amplifier in a car is a key feature. Yes you can have a HU which plays videos, games, reads emails etc.. but ultimately what CORE features are you needing a new HU for? For me it was maps, music, BT and radio. Yes I bought a reverse cam and wired that in too as it supported it and was a cool feature to have, but the night and day comparisons come when I turn my HU up. The Joying here is probably the only one I would go for if I was to choose again. It has some awesome options. Having said that Ive had ICE installs in the past with multiple subs and speakers so know what to trust, albeit expensive. The main issue I had with the android options was the many chinese options which makes it a total minefield. Very good video, appreciated!

Sounds great too. But looking at your video, it looks like they might have copied the settings interface of the Joying? At 10:20 on the Joying, that's pretty much the same as the Atoto. Not exactly though. Does anyone know the history between these two companies? Did Atoto copy Joying?

I bought a CHEAP 10.1 inch Windows CE unit for $35 bucks. as far as the unit goes it's just fine for 95% of the consumers out there.. these really inexpensive units are more tailored to video playback then they are for audio use. there's something nice to have in your car basically.
for audio quality? the joying make sense for the sole reason it has a digital output. it also means you now have an additional cost of setting up your system if you choose to go that route.
however if you're only interested in audio quality and you want to have the best you can possibly have for the least amount of money? You don't need a headunit. In fact? Why bother?
you already have a phone so use that. most people use their phones anyways just for directions or navigation and they usually have a windshield mount.
if you really need navigation simply get yourself a large tablet and get a tablet holder in your done. chances are you probably already have a tablet to use.
if that's the case? You now have an ultimate audio system.
all you need to do is add an external amplifier and for 98% of you? Walla! finished with your car audio install from at least the electronics source standpoint.
many amps on the market today that support Bluetooth support apt-x, so that's it. You are done.
some of you have phones that actually work really well with a three-and-a-half millimeter Jack and you're still able to make phone calls with the built in phone microphones . Xiaomi is really good at this.
_For the Basic Ultimate S.Q. System_
    Phone> USB Dac ( *Topping AD-10* ) > Amp(s).
    [Free] [ $10 ~ $100 ] [ $63 ]
Add some great DIY speakers, and sound treatment, Custom mount the drivers, And you are done!
All the problems, noise, etc are gone. Its the best simple system you can do. Nothing can touch it for simplicity, S.Q. & Cost.
again, if S.Q. Is your MAIN want? This is it. Bar none.

I'd rather custom build my own with Raspberry Pi with 4 or 8 gb ram/ whatever touchscreen size/ whatever internal storage size/Custom pre-amp/ Custom open source software/ Custom housing for your screen and addons/ the list goes on and on. Remember the day's when recording software was exclusive and cost an arm and a leg? Now there is open source to record for free. Same for vehicle radio's Manufacture's are losing again to open source! So I say, see you at the finish line and to all the sucker's who over paid for useless garbage.

I have the Joying 10.1 and it's a great deck. My biggest gripe is that you can only use bluetooth with a phone and odb2 reader. I have a DSP that I would love to be able to manage directly from the deck. Other than that its a no brainer compared to big box brands like Pioneer and Alpine. Big box brands do sound better on stock wiring but if your using a aftermarket amp with a DSP it sounds great as well.

i think the kenwood radio is much better. (is my opinion)
    1. it boots much faster (when the android radio is shut down instead of standby where it eats battery, in standny it is there immediately).
    2. (was the case with my android model) I drove on a bumpy road with a hard suspension (dampers etc.) or it was the temperatures. that usb devices were suddenly no longer recognized (dab+ adapter / smartphone) and that the radio just restarted like that, or even got stuck during booting. (i guess cold solder joints on the circuit board, but i sold the radio as defective)
    3. the sound of the original radio was not so good. the sound on the android radio was much better, but the kenwood really got a very good sound from my standard speakers with the right settings. i have already saved the money for the speakers in my car, sure, it's not as good as high quality premium speakers, but it's getting there.
    4. in my experience, good close source products are better than open sorce, but you may be more limited, but the system just works
    5. how often do you actually use the additional functions that an android radio can do?
close source vs open source i don't see any reason for/against it, you can see it on apple and android smartphones, or on windows and linux.

I would recommend simply getting a regular, non-touch screen head unit with an auxiliary port for 3.5 mm (maybe also bluetooth and a usb port if you think you might use them) plugs, buy an adapter for your phone, and plug your phone into the aux port via the adapter and cable. You can use your phone as the touch screen unit. You will not have to worry about whether the head unit has enough memory or will correctly run your applications. If applications are needed, they can be run on your phone. Your head unit, in this setup, serves the purpose of allowing you to play music from your phone.

If you or anyone else is still interested (probably already bought one), I just bought and built in a high spec Xtrons unit with 8 core, 64Gb+4Gb, DSP and to be honest it's quite disappointing and frustrating:
      - 4G is unworkably slow and unstable despite having the antenna ON the dashboard
      - I can't run any apps or even launchers on it unless I am in the BT/phone mode because this unit doesn't have a brake bypass, so no Spotify, launchers or most other apps, which are all blocked with "dont'watch video while driving". I should connect the brake wire but I'm not that technical with wires.
      - a LOT of static noise that I will have to find out where it's coming from
      - Something smells burnt, not sure if it's the unit overheating already at 20c outside temperature or something else
      - touch is laggy and unit is a bit slower than I expected for this price point
      - unit has too much dashboard spacing on top and bottom
      - hardly any customization settings
      - it's Android 12 (which it says in the system info) but looks a lot older
I think I'll returning it for something more reliable like a 2DIN Joying unit with a seperate 4G dongle or so.

I have a xtrons Px5 4gbx64gb hopefully it does alright getting ready to try it soon, just finishing putting in a very nice system but I have a nice DSP and stuff so no need for it on the radio I'm just setting it up now but I am trying to connect a DVB-T box up through the RCA in but I am not getting any signal and cant figure it out, the only way I can find to even try to access the rca inputs through the radio is the tv app, and to even get that I have to access the factory settings and click tv and pick 1 of the 30 different devices like 08dvb-t, or 10dvb-t and many others but when I pick 1 then open the tv app it just says no signal, same as if nothing is connected except once in a while I see a tiny bit of the bottom of the screen ink and will have like a blurry green stripe at the bottom of the screen like a signal is trying to come in but only for a half a second then nothing and I cant figure it out. So if anyone knows anything let me know, thanks

I have on my Audi S4 a xtrons with 8gb ram and 128gb storage wireless apple play and the screen is 12.3 running android os 12 …The unit is very well made I also have a SIM card on it the wireless car play pairs super fast and the data from the sim works flawlessly running on 4LTE.. I do agree 100 percent if you buy a head unit try to buy one with 4gb or higher of ram ..I also install the unit everything was plug and play and the unit work nice with all the factory settings that came with the car ..👍🏽👍🏽

I am on my third kenwood head unit,in eight years,ALL THREE of them have eventually got a red light of death, one of the circuit boards de-solders over time, because of the heat from the heater.I have also had one of the three repaired,it cost me £300 !! The only reason I have kept buying the kenwood is because it fits direct into the dashboard. The start up is ridiculous,it takes forever(DMX525DAB)..You said it took two days for your replacement to arrive from China?! WHAT !! Where do you live??china!! My next unit will certainly NOT be a kenwood!!!!

Very informative video. Congratulations! What model do you recommend for a Mercedes Benz E350 2009 Elegance? I checked the Joying website because you think it is a trusted brand, and I found a very good one but it says this. 9" Android car radio upgrade for Mercedes-Benz E-Class/W211/CLS/C219 1999-2007. My car is W211 type, it is late model production., any advice will be appreciated.

Pioneer 360dab vs 77dab or kenwood 7722dab? Which one is more responsive and better audio quality? Also pioneer 250dab I know it’s not wireless but I read it had better audio quality? I’m trying to choose one for my car

I'm a total newbie in this space....so please excuse the basic questions...I have an older Toyota and want a more modern "screen" type unit but all I need is the FM radio plus (preferably) on-board GPS in the unit. Nothing more. I believe there are other units that "use" and process the GPS signal from your cell phone ( that you have in the car with you, either via wired or wireless connection)...but I would like GPS to be stand-alone. That said, would then prefer the GPS maps to be upgradable over time. Would the best bet be to find a later-model Toyota unit that has these features ( say, from an auto parts recycler?)...to install? And do you know if such "car-brand" unit GPS can be updated over time with latest maps?

On the Chinese Android units, are you able to download a different Android Auto linking app or are you stuck with the one that is pre-installed with the unit? I have a no name Chinese unit with Zlink and when I turn on my headlights, the map doesn't go to night mode, even though my phone is set to automatic. The parking lights wire is connected so when I turn on my headlights, the buttons on the left illuminate.
The reason I ask is I also have a different Chinese Android unit with Car Link 2.0 app and it goes into night mode display when I turn on the headlights. Also on my JVC unit, it goes into night mode, but not the other Chinese unit.

did you get a reply on this ? I have a Bosion android auto unit with ZLINK app and i'm not a big fan of the ZLINK app interface.... Apple Carplay works well. But the bluetooth phone calls sound very very crackling / static noise. Can't figure out what the problem is

@@joshmarks1I had contacted the seller I purchased my unit from and they told me that there isn't another app available for their unit. I'm not so sure if they're telling me this due to the complexity of doing such a thing due to the settings adjustments needed. It may require going into the code itself?

I've had a Carjoying headunit in my VW ute for years (2016).
I've had to replace it once as the first one died.
The wifi no longer works on my current unit.
I'm looking to replace it again.
Wondering if there are better options these days.
One thing that has always annoyed me with the Joying unit is the VW climate control overlay that pops up on the screen. It comes up and down and you can't press anything or see anything under the overlay.
So when I hop in and load up Google maps, I can barely type the address in because this stupid overlay pops up.
I have to wait for it to go away then quickly type some letters in before it pops up again and hope I get enough letters in for the auto suggest to give me the address I'm looking for.
Ad a side note, don't get the touch screen only model. I had that first. Touch screen volume adjust is terrible while driving.
I replaced it when it died with a model with physical control knob. Much better.

While I generally think the poster of this content has the best intentions for his audience, I would have to disagree with the warning not to buy the Chinese Android headunits with under 2gb of RAM. I’ve had the same sub-$100 Android headunit (MTK8777- mekede is the “brand” 16g rom 1gb ram ) for over 3 years installed in my archaic ‘94 Cadillac and it’s been working well since. I think my stereo has been tricked into saying it’s running Android 6 or 8 but when I did some digging I found it’s running 4.4. No worries- still connects to the play store and has been reliable. Had some issues installing the wiring correctly due to one or two mislabeled wires but once that was sorted, it was smooth sailing. I live in upper New York State and so we see hot muggy summers and cold blistering winters. It’s worked fine in all conditions! I use a seperate $40 dongle I bought over a year and half ago for CarPlay and that works fine too!

    • @SaabUnleashed
      @SaabUnleashed  3 роки тому

Of course. The fact that you're using a CarPlay dongle means that you are not limited to the specification of your head unit because you are effectively streaming all apps from the iPhone - the limitation is with the specification of your iPhone. 1gb of RAM would have problems running the latest versions of mainstream apps if they were running directly from your head unit. Generally, these head units also skimp on CPU power too. Not to say they wouldn't work, but they would most definitely run slower than intended.

    • @Haffmatthew
      @Haffmatthew 3 роки тому

@@SaabUnleashed fair enough. I didn’t initially consider the CarPlay aspect you informed me about. I just am happy with my two headunits similar to the ones you’ve covered in this video that I ordered in the cheapo spec. Granted, mostly using only with Bluetooth audio and CarPlay when I need directions. For that, I see the single gig performing well on these little buggers.

@@Haffmatthew it's the Bibo2. It's the software that I haven't got my head around yet, what I need to install and how I can convert files I download so I can print them. I bought the printer a while ago but I just haven't had the time to educate myself on it's use :)
