one tip I found out when doing mine for the first time, and would have saved me a lot of time and effort is that when you take your first clearance measurement, record it, the loosen off and remove the cams, then install and re-torque them to spec and measure again. you never know if the mechanic before overtightened or not and in my case it made a huge difference.
Tristian, your explanation of the math is one of the clearest and simplest I’ve seen so far, especially with the valvetrain drawing you made. Most people dont realize that it’s the valve seats that wear and that you need a THINNER shim to increase the valve clearance measurement. Great job man!
Man, you are a genius. Thank you very for sharing. I just picked up my very first dirtbike yesterday, a 2006 YZ250, maybe old bike but in great condition. Its starts right away, rums great. Watching your video makes me feel like ive worked on this bike before. My level of experience is only up to a 65cc ktm, rebuilding DIY, My son’s race bike.
I just got into the 4 stroke motocross scene so I didn't knew much about how to set the timing. But you did such a good job explaining it so great i understood everything! Thank you Tristian 🙌🏼 Greeting from Germany ✌🏼
This is as the greatest video BY FAR, I’m trying to decide to do my motorcycle clearance and I was a little worried I wouldn’t understand the math, or how any of it worked, and this was the best video I’ve ever soon, thank you, all the other videos just made me have more questions, you deserve a follow.
Great video, I have a 2008 YZ250F in the UK and have the Hot Rod shim kit and will be attempting my first shim check and adjustment with your great insight, thank you 🙏🏼
Love that tubular frame means that could be an '05-06, cant believe how clean that is. I have the '05 WR450F thats just as clean and will be doing this soon, great job...
By far this is one of the best explanation videos I've seen so far! This video literally just solved an exact issue I couldn't quite figure out completely. Great video man!
Holy Shit this is the explanation I needed to see to be confident enough to tear into my 07 yz450f! The zip tie was genius because I was concerned about that too! The explanation of valve wear was perfect. I wanted to know why the shim picked was the shim picked and how it compensated for wear! Nobody could explain it buy you you're a damn Picasso! Beautiful! Thank you!
finally! i now understand exactly what is happening inside, you, sir, are a life saver! thank you for all the effort and energy that went into this video, now i'll be able to learn from my mistakes, oops, i meant experience, lol
Would have been nice to see the rest of the bike going back together. But I'll be using this video for reference in future. You explained it very well 👍
Excellent build always wanted to see inside one of these style of engines the valve adjustments with the shim Missouri interesting but that must have taken some time I've heard guys complaining about it you did an excellent job building and filming thanks
This will come in handy when I have to adjust the very same valves on the very same bike as this video😬 She’s a great bike Tristan, top notch job on this rebuild. Having a blast on it!
This was a great explanation on valve adjustment! The illustrations were simple and straightforward and helped me gain a better understanding. Thank you!
Dude nobody can explain math to me and I've never understood it. But damn if you didn't break it down for me. Wish I had a teacher like you in high school. 💪
Great video. I was confused because the readings I was getting on my 2001 Kawasaki KLX 300R were literally off the charts. But they were inaccurate. I took the measurements without the Cam cap bolted down. Duh.
This is the Best video I have seen on this. Question: if I put cams in head and bolt the caps down should I be able to turn the cams. When I bolt it down it’s really tight and cannot turn the cams at all. No timing chain on it and no buckets. Cam doesn’t budge. Seems like I should be able to rotate them until the lobe hits the bucket or valve stim.
Hi mate.. for yamaha yz250f two types of bolts are using to fix the oil tube on the head and block . One bolt with small jet and other bolt hav bigger jet .. top line goes to the cam shaft lubrication and next one for the gear box ..may i know which one is using on the head and which one using on the block..?
@@TristanDurandBuilds Man I type even if I have 😅🤣😂shit english I mean even if I had problem with my WRF450CC I'm boring to do more than change oils/oil filter /air filter & if we are ready after winter with a lot of mood maybe clean carburettor

Hey great video my guy. When measuring the valves to they all have to be the same number. For example. If specs are between 17& 22. And one comes in at say 18. Do all other values have to be @ 18. Or just along as they're in spec
Hello, thanks for the great explanation! could you tell me how did you solve the celarance on the thigt valve (0.03mm) ? i have exactly the same situation on my bike
Wow... I would like to buy a 2009 yz250f and the gentleman is telling me that bike takes to long to start or doesnt start at all. He was told by his mechanic that he needs an overhaul cylinder kit. I think its the valve shims. What do you think?
Question. So you have valve specs in your service manual to go by when adjusting valve clearance. But how do you adjust valve clearance if you change your stock cams for performance cams. Wouldnt the valve clearance specs change cause you have different cams. Can you please explain
Hi! I just bought the same bike, but it comes with a big bore athena 290 cc cilinder... My question is, may i have to change the valve clearance or i have to keep the same of the 250cc? Thanks a lot!!

Yeah Tristan! Well done on a simple yet informative and understand explanation of shimming the valves.
I actually appreciate that I can help, that’s why I made that video 👍
Thank you so much for the awesome video. Only part I was confused on was putting the cam tensioner back in
Thanks Criss! The cam tensioner is pretty straightforward but keep a screwdriver turned all the way in when you slip it on the cylinder 🔧

Right, it happens to be the best of us 😅
Very clear, good job! Feel confident I can do this. Thanks
Thanks for the video it was great and that’s a great idea to zip tie your chain on the cam.
Zip ties are the builder’s best friend 😅
Perfect drawing. It can be confusing as to why a thinner shim gives you more clearance. And vice versa.
Yes the first time for me was confusing too, I was used to seeing too much gap on cars

Agreed, it should turn freely, you have a problem somewhere, either the cams aren’t straight (or wrong diameter) or the caps aren’t placed properly
You do a great job of explaining! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for being detailed and thorough!
Yeah I heard that a few times 😅

I noticed he didn't use a valve spring compressor to take them out or put them in. Will I need one? I have a 2010 yz250f
I didn’t take the valves out, if I was taking the valves out I would have to use a spring compressor 🔧
where would you recommend getting a carburetor from, for a 2002 yz250f??
Hello. I don't see the mark on the flywheel. can you find the brand?
Wheres the rest of the videos
Excellent!
Good tip with the zip ties.

How much is the used yz250f engine there,
What year is the bike?
Another reason 2 stroke dirt bikes are way better.

@@xxs1lentk1ller30 They are lighter and more powerful. And on and on and on.Get cracking . then come back. Thx
They ride smother too
What if the valve buckets won't come out
They should with a magnet, something may be bent if they don’t come out 🤷🏻♂️
Is it the same clearance for my yz250f 2007
You should look for a service manual online to make sure of this, it may not be as you have a 4 valve
