Some previous owner dropped it in a pond where it sat for awhile. He told local punk he could have it for $100 if he could retrieve it. So the punk was no mechanic but he and his friends painted it and tried to sell it as a 2002. Can't believe you got it running so good.

@@gymshoe8862 if it was completely submerged for more than an hour it would have had water in the crank through the reed valves and rusted bottom end bearings and been seized. This is common from being stored outside for years. Takes longer in the west but results are the same. Unfortunately I let this happen to a cr125 that I didn’t have a garage to put in. The tarps I put over it actually retained moisture and made it worse

@@dezrtrat702 Nah, I think the bike was stolen, rode to hell then thrown into a pond.

I'm not singling any one individual out or anything by what I'm gonna say because I've seen it in the comments on videos going back to the beginning of Joe's channel but.... I see many times where Joe is being dogged for buying cheap, broken machines that "Well, there's no way I'd have bought that" he's picked up and got running, dolled up etc. to flip and make a little money on. He's never once said he doesn't do that and he's never proclaimed to be a master bike mechanic. His videos today, compared to years ago, show that the respectful critique and suggestions he's gotten, he takes to heart and tries to better his technique. If his content inspires some kid to get in Dad's toolbox and start wrenching on something & maybe getting their own "junk" and start flipping it for a few bucks.... that's inspiring! Which shows that Joe's more of an inspiration to these younger dudes who are watching & maybe even an old dude like myself! Thanks Joe for all you do to keep bringing us the quality content you are! God bless!~ Scott 💙🙏🏼👊🏼
Joe I'd really like to suggest that you check the gap on even new spark plugs as they're not always where they should be. They could have been hit on that end or dropped etc.

Let me explain, I love tinkering on things, and getting old things running, why I love your channel over all others, you don’t try and annoyingly entertain or be funny, have long intro video, etc. you just talk through your repairs and that is perfect. I think the theory of it being dropped into a lake or River, through ice is a good one. They possibly pulled it out, got it fired up and then drove it a bit, with water everywhere, then parked it out behind the shed after that. But, love how it’s coming along. I bought a behind the shed for 10 years, 1987 KLR250 for 100$ and now it’s my main bike. Turned out good after lining the tank, new brake hardware, carb clean and seat cover, etc. took it on a 250 mile ride in June and performed flawlessly.

I've been doing this stuff since 1987 and those days were already coming to an end even in the early 90s. If it runs at all or can be easily made to run the price starts at $1,000 and goes up from there. Remember a new one costs nearly $8,000 now after delivery and sales tax. Fixed up just a little bit more than what it already is now that it's running this bike will fetch $2,500ish pretty easily all day and everyday.

So yeah, this was at the bottom of someone's pond for a WHILE.. they pulled it out, put new plastics on it, sprayed it quick with some fresh 2002 paint and called it good. I am SO surprised she sounds as awesome as she does, considering the fowl play that came out of the crank case oil, man.. I thought she was a goner for good.. I'm ok with it.. you knew it was what it was, Joe you're no kid in this game.. great content, great video, nice little bike who has been saved from the bottom of a lake. Awesome!

with the oil looking like that, a good idea would be to run ATF in there for a bit, it is very high detergent and basically straight 20 wt. will really help clean out that mess that is down there.

You were right when you say everywhere you watch on this bike there is a problem.
Try using Philips (PH) bit on the carb cap screws, you are using Pozidron (PZ) those have different angles and thicknesses. Hope this time you are checking my comment on this one✌🏻

That was that dark blue white fenders bike, the 250 of that year made one of the greatest enduro bikes of the decade, but very mellow mx bike. Since the start of the video when you said 02 I thought didn't they all follow Honda and switch to alu frames by the end of the 90s, how come this is steel? But couldn't remember the years they switched.

Before you first run and start the bikes ,pull tie the clutch levers back so the new heat cycle and warm oil can get into those clutch plates and free them up if they are stuck and froze together from sitting ,as a veteran after years doing what your are doing ,I have found out a lot of the bikes I bought back the clutches released themselves doing so ,saving you a new clutch plate kits and labor to replace them,a little trans fluid also helps in the gear boxes to free them plates up ,and then drain again and add fresh gear oil to the gearboxes,,the trans fluid really cleans the gearboxes up very well without messing with old clutch plates and poluting them causing them to slip,as automatic transmissions have clutch plates in them also, and the fluid is a great cleaner with its high viscosity, when you re-drain pulling all the junk out with it

For stripped screws try a pair of Vampliers. They are pliers that do not lock but will remove stripped screws with ease.
