I've heard a version of this story where the producers were partly to blame. They gave her the wool and told her to knit it into a scarf and never mentioned the size or even that she shouldn't use all the wool so she assumed she should use it all.

Tom is tall. I thought Jon was tall but Tom is really really tall. I remember when I ran into him at a convention. I looked up at him and he looked down at me and I felt like I was in the second grade looking up at the principal. I felt so tiny. Then he smiled. God, I never felt such warmth in my life. And then he said”hello” in only the way Tom can. I almost fainted…and he’s not even my favorite Doctor!
