Melinda gives advice on how to recreate the most famous scarf in time and space - Tom Baker's scarf when he played the Fourth Doctor on Doctor Who from 1974 to 1981. - Комедії
To this day, Tom Baker's scarf is the most epic scarf ever made.
I never believed a scarf could do anything to keep a person warm until I wore one for the first time a number a years ago. Now I'm a total believer.
I suddenly know so much about making a Doctor Who scarf! And knowing is half the battle... the other half being... you know... making the actual scarf.
…A real American HERO! 🎉
I 'scarfed a bag of corn chips... if that helps.
@@JONNYSORENSEN_AU better to scarf your chips than snarf them.
The other half is 25% blue lasers and 25% red lasers
Such a PBS program vibe to this and I think that's highly appropriate considering that's where most of us Yanks first saw it. Brilliant as usual.
My mom was, for a time, quite the witty knitter. She made me several Doctor scarves in various patterns and lengths. I grew up watching the great Tom Baker and he's been one of my heroes ever since. I treasure those scarves, and I treasure my mom (my greatest hero). Great video!
Knitting...reminds me of grandma before she passed away in 2015. May God bless her soul for teaching me and my sister how to sew and knit.
Mad skills on display here. Beautiful work. This is a little piece of my childhood. Late-70s Saturday teatime watching Dr Who with mum and dad.
The best accessory ever. Tom Baker is always my Doctor. amazing video Melinda, always enjoy these retro hobby videos
This is a fantastic video. Well done Michael and Melinda!
Excellent debut episode of RetroKnitting, from the RetroBlasting dream team of Melinda and Michael.
A wonderful host, interesting and entertaining content and top notch editing, combine to create another hit for the RetroBlasting channel.
Melinda! Yea! Thank you so much for showing me knitting things I didn't know. Miss ya in the videos!
I love Tom Baker… and his scarf. I can’t knit to save my life. But it’s fun watching you do it.
This is the first time I have ever watched a video on knitting, and it was very interesting. Thank you.
i dont think i would ever knit. But I appreciate that this video is out there!!!! in my books. the best Doctor.. and such a iconic piece!
... and today I learned that the Doctor's scarf has it's own website.
I wouldn't have the patience to knit a sock puppet, never mind a 12 foot scarf, twice! Nice work, Melinda!
Melinda is amazing! Wonderful work and a fabulous tutorial!
I’m not a knitter but I still found that fun and fascinating to watch! Melinda, I’m sure you’ll be getting commission requests now!
Crafts with RetroBlasting, I love it!!!
Great video Melinda! Love learning about homemade props and this was definitely new to me 🤙🏼
Tom Baker is my favorite Doctor and one of the sweetest people on the planet, and at the young age (for a time lord) of 88, still working!
Lovely to see Melinda. Interesting project, I appreciate the attention to detail and doing projects over until they're how you want.
Excellent video, well done Melinda and Michael 👍
Yea Melinda! This is great
Brilliant video! I've now knitted over 12 of these scarves for friends and family around the world. Nothing I love better than sat in front of the TV in the evenings, either Dr Who or Coronation Street on the telly and knitting one. Keeps me out of trouble 🤣
I love seeing the details and work that go into handcrafts. I hope we can see more in the future.
My aunt is making me a S12 scarf currently, it's coming along greatly and all that's left is the tassels!
Great video with fantastic tips
Really enjoyed this!!!
Wow. I never realized how much work went into making the 4th Doctor's scarf.🧣 That's a major labor of love. Thanks for sharing this, Melinda. 👍
Excellent video!
I really enjoyed that and Mrs APD said she is going to watch tommorow 🤟🏻🤟🏻 Great work Melinda
Thank you!
Great video! :)
Thanks for the tips, really enjoyed this video, plan on making a scarf myself. You all keep up the good work!
Something I would never attempt yet greatly enjoyed watching and learning about.
Great video!
cool idea! love the creativity
Great video Melinda! Bi don't know anything about knitting, but I really enjoyed learning about the behind the scene history of the scarf. Very informative and entertaining. Great work!
I remember 70s knitting stores in glasgow the colours were predominantly beige with drab highlights
Melinda! Yay! Well done, y’all!
This is dope! Thanks 🙏🏽
My wife knits and crochets, she picked up the hobby during the pandemic and it really helped her relax and focus during that period (alongside playing D&D on Discord). Its really hard for me to understand the process even after she explained it to me. What I do get it is that you do really need a big selection of needles AND you need to stock up on skeins. (I also keep forgetting the difference between a skein and a cake LOL) Thank you for this very fascinating debut of a new series, Melinda!
Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Peter Davison were my doctors growing up. Tom being the main one due to the length of time on the series. Being a commonwealth country, we were Doctor Who mad. Cheers from Australia.
Great video
Good video Mrs. Retro. :) 👍🏼
This is Fantastic, my mother knitted me my old Green and White Bradford PA Football scarf it was massive, I did have a go myself, but failed miserably.
This is so awesome
#300: You know what? It's been a thoroughly crap end to a day and in the meantime, I'm going to enjoy the whatever is left inside out of this well crafted video. Thank you, Melinda.
Thank you for the video, this is going to help so much! I'm a beginner knitter that does it the English way, but I want to not drop my needle anymore, and you just have so many great tips!
Thank you for your kind words! Good luck!
This is really impressive!
Maybe it's just me, but it feels like it's been a long time since a Melinda video so I am 100% down for this.
I made one for my son about 10 years ago and he still loves it. I used Vannas Choice. Now he wants the purple and red one.
*RetroBlasting, It's not just for Breakfast Anymore* ❤🔥
I’ve been looking into making this scarf and as someone who is picking up knitting again more seriously this time this is super helpful!
Thank you so much for all the useful tips too and especially on those stitch counters because I primarily dropped knitting after yeti g tired of having to count the stitches each row but those should be super helpful!
Have fun!
Melinda just has this special way of teaching and explaining topics that immediately hooks you. She could teach Accounting and make it fun and interesting!
I'm currently crocheting a Season 18 scarf, using chenille yarns I sourced from Ice Yarns. (All 3 colors are theoretically DK yarns, but 2 are much closer to worsted weight than the 3rd one.) I previously crocheted a skinny (but full-length) Season 12 scarf (started at a workshop at GenCon), and also have been trying to crochet a baby-blanket version of the Season 12 scarf, using Knit Picks Brava for all 7 colors. (That last project has been a WIP for so long, though, that it might count as a UFO by now.)
This both reminded me of my late mom and gave me something to share with a friend that knits.
Melinda on camera?! We’ve missed you!!
These intros keep getting better and better
Honestly Mel, it may as well be witchcraft as far as I'm concerned. I'm watching you do it and listening as you explain it but it's flippin' magic my poor wee brain can't fathom. Fascinating stuff though and it looks gorgeous, awesome work!
Tom Baker is my favorite actor. Ever.
Thank you 🎉🏆💯
In New Zealand winter I could get away with tying two scarves together for that not quite dapper delinquent Baker look, but living in Perth I would literally die of heat stroke wearing a scarf any time of year. None the less, I still love scarves and of course this video thank you.
Like...WOW! What a great video!!! ❤☮🌎
Glad you enjoyed it
that looks way better then the one I had way back when.
Yes. Now I want a gaiter in Dr. Who Tom Baker pattern!
Great tips! Malabrigo Rios has over 100 colors and is perfect yarn for this! Frank ochre is seen here
That crocheted scarf looks like it's in double crochet (UK treble crochet) stitches. Single crochet would be the closest one could get to stitches the same height as garter stitch in knitting, or Tunisian simple stitch in Tunisian crochet. (Double-ended Tunisian crochet would look the most like garter stitch in knitting, but would require at least 2 skeins/balls of each color, since one would want the same colors on both sides.)
The fans are doing the best work!
Hey, Melinda!!
The lady bakes, knits and loves metal. Rock on.
Melinda, Mercyful Fate and Kreator are playing a show at the Tabernacle November 16th. You should go. I saw them in Detroit it was sweet!
Malinda looks so much more comfortable in front of the camera now.
That's a lot of work!
I'm assuming the original prop was done relatively quickly because bbc only had so much time and money spent on Dr. who. TV production time especially for that show demanded fairly tight turn around, and this is well documented, so that means she/the bbc costumer, more than likely did it in continental.
My grandmother for many years knitted booties and would mail them to Greenwich, England. Her side of the family is from there, and my grandfather’s mother (not sure where in England she is from) still had her accent all of her life, she arrived in the United States when she was about 12. She was always afraid of squirrels. I imagine squirrels must be the most fierce animal on the island.😂🐿️🌳🇬🇧🇺🇸
What a witty little knitter.
Great video Melinda! As an encore are you planning to knit Tom Baker's 1981 Maroon / Dark red scarf?
Your colors are gorgeous. When I look at photos of Baker’s scarf I don’t see green. Maybes is the photo quality or something.
I had someone knit me a Dr who scarf it cost me £150 and the knitter done it in 3 months I wear it every winter and I had it made to the length of 18 feet long .
Knit 1 pearl 2, I heard that saying and had no idea what it meant. Now I kinda know.
Next episode: How to make Ralpie's Aunt Clara's Bunny Pajamas.
Hey Michael question for you is your Rotj lightsaber prop a Roman prop replica?
Didn't I already answer this? I'm pretty sure I did. No - A guy from the RPF made it for me.
@@retroblasting okay thanks so much
Tom Baker is the Doctor
What colors were used on the scarf for Tom Baker's final season?
Reds and purples
Where did you get the yarn from for this project?
I used the yarn specified on the doctorwhoscarf.com website, sourced by searching on Google. I ordered from like 3-4 different places. Yarns go out of production all the time as well.
So you kind of have to spend a long time looking. Maybe go to your local yarn store and get them to help you source based on the Pantone colors provided.
I'd love a show and tell video of how this scarf came out. Are you a member of Stitches in Time on Facebook?
Retroknitting. Doctor Who Tom. Baker s. Fourth. Doctor. Scarf
Kenny. Bacchus. 54. Minutes. Ago.
Nothing to do with vid. Hey Melinda do you like Killswitch Engage or Pantera? Iv been on a Killswitch tear lately and watching you made me wonder
Is that a Herbert Johnson Fourth Doctor fedora?
No. Penman Hats.
Jelly babies?
Love Tom Baker and that scarf. Well done Melinda!
