You forgot the most important reason: Putin himself. That is, Putin’s grip on absolute power, something he cannot afford to lose. Everything else, including NATO, Ukraine’s resources, Soviet irredentism, comes as secondary.
In Russia, a country with no democratic tradition or rule of law, leaders do not simply step down, in the way that a former US president can just finish his term, go home and do something else, regardless how many controversial decisions he made during presidency. Once a leader in a country like Russia and China retires, he has nothing, and has every possibility to be trialed, arrested, or even killed, or in the best case scenario, fading into obscurity like Gorbachev. After seeing waves of popular uprisings across authoritarian countries, which are spreading increasingly close to Russia over the years, Putin fears he could be next (think of the Arab spring, Maidan revolution, mass protests in Belarus 2020, and Kazakhstan 2021). Since the very beginning of Putin’s presidential career, military adventurism has boosted his approval: Chechnya (2000), Georgia (2008), Crimea (2014), Syria (2015), and now full scale attack on Ukraine. So he waged this war mainly to boost his domestic support among vatniks, and to crack down dissents

This looks at the issue in terms that the West can understand. They all make logical sense but none are the key reasons. They're important, but not key. You have to understand what Putin's ideology is first, and that is difficult for Westerners because it is outside of rational cost-benefit type thinking. If you want to understand it, read Timothy Snyder. Erzra Klein did a good poscast with him a few weeks ago.

The absurdity of this is incredible.
    * Gorbachev in early 90s: West should stop NATO expansion as this is like kicking your foe while they’re down.
    * Russia’s general Lebed in the 90s: NATO’s continues eastward expansion will result in a war if it continues.
    * Putin in early 2000s: stop eastward expansion of NATO, we will not ignore it.
    * Putin in 2008: stop eastward expansion of NATO we will now allow it.
    * US in 2008 (after 3 waves of NATO expansion): Let’s offer membership action plan to Ukraine/Georgia.
    * Kennan/Kissinger/Germany who were all for prior expansions: This can literally lead to war, so no. Besides most Ukrainians are opposed to it.
    * US in 2008: Fine we’ll just promise Georgia and Ukraine they’ll be members in the near future.
    * US during 2014 Maidan: Let’s help oust a democratically elected president elected just 3 years ago and help get a guy in charge who wants to have Ukraine join NATO as his policy.
    * Russia in response: Takes Crimea and destabilizes the East of the country.
    * Ukraine in 2019: Let’s codify in our constitution that we will ask for NATO MAP in 2023.
    * US in Summer 2021: We support Ukraine’s NATO’s aspirations.
    * Russia in December 2021: Asks US for security guarantees and to formally stop NATO expansion.
    * 2022 US / NATO rejects Russia’s request to stop further NATO enlargement
    * 2022 a few days later: Russia invades Ukraine.

    • @horus2780
      @horus2780 2 роки тому

Ridiculous. If you actually listened to Putin's declaration of war NATO barely shows up. He talks about 'Ukrainian nationalists oppressing Russian speakers' and 'liberating' the Donbass. It's only in the West where you see idiots like this make these claims about Russia's motivations, rather than actually listening to what the Russians say about it themselves.

    • @russ_6214
      @russ_6214 2 роки тому +2

@@horus2780 Russia cited three major reasons: “denazification” “save people of Donbas” and “demilitarization.” The last one is the real reason for the war. The first two are largely what you call war propaganda.
I’m an immigrant from the Soviet Union and actually speak Russian, so I think I’m quite well-versed about the Russian official position about NATO as I’ve heard most of the full speeches by Russian leaders. NATO expansion is all they’ve talked about since the 90s when talking to foreign representatives. Listen to Putin’s speech in 2008 in Bucharest, 14 years ago. There is plenty of translated versions available. Like I said, westerners themselves like Kissinger and Kennan, both of whom were FOR NATO enlargement in the 90s, have both said Ukraine needs to become a neutral country to avoid a broad war.
Every war has a real reason, and a propaganda reason for the masses/troops. Literally every war is like that. The fake reason given for Iraq was “WMDs” and later “to bring freedom and democracy from tyrannical Saddam.” That’s what you call a propaganda reason to rally people behind the war. The truth is only an idiot would now believe we cared about “freedom and democracy to help average people” or didn’t know that Saddam didn’t have any WMDs.
Russia’s propaganda reason for this war is “denazification” and “to help people of Donbas.” Both have SOME degree of truth to them. Ukraine has a far right problem (hugely overblown by Russia). Moreover they kept shelling the East because they didn’t want to fulfill Minsk (which would ensure permanent no-NATO expansion to Ukraine as it gave those regions autonomy). Since they didn’t do that (the Ukrainian politicians have literally declared they will not fulfill Minsk) Russia declared war to ensure the country isn’t part of NATO - that’s exactly what “demilitarization” effectively means. By the way, they’ve already pretty much accomplished that goal, so west supplying weapons is just prolonging this.

With all due respect, the only reason why Russia wants control over Ukraine is that
Russian leaders nurtured population which want greatness but built the system in which the only way they could get some of it is through war and destruction.
Plus, to stay in power Russian leaders cannot allow for some former soviet republic to prosper more than the Russia as this would have made an argument inside the country about whether management system in the Russia is the best system Russians could hope for.
Before this war target was Belarus, subjugation of which is almost complete (no major appreciation points can be earned from Russians by enforcing more power over Belarus). Currently it is Ukraine's turn, which couldn't have been subjugated by the same means (financing pro-Russian parties, pro-Russian president, gas monopoly etc.). Moreover, the plans of subjugation of Ukraine were in progress for a long time as dehumanization of Ukrainians in the eyes of Russian population started long before 2014.

Because of NATO's expansion which made Russia panick, Russia wanted to clear Ukraine by force, because noone, and I mean noone, listened to requests of president Putin about NATO's expanaion. Ukraine has all the potential to become an economic powerhouse that could provide Europe with the resources it needs. It's the way to cut-off Russia completely. The idea that Ukraine could overshadow Russia in the near future is something that is horrifying for Putin.
Ukraine is a sovereign state over which Russia has no claims. Not even so called 'historical claims'. If that were the case, then Italy could claim half of Europe because the Romans had control over it till some 1500 ears ago. No, Ukraine belongs to the Ukrainians. It's up to them to decide their future. If they want to join the EU or NATO for that matter. Maybe that's something Putin fears the most; free choice.

The Russian Federation is not a real country. Really.
While Western elites are notorious for expanding their empires into Africa and Asia in the 19th century, Russia continued to expand its colonial empire east and south. Moscow does not consider these people from its “federation” to be real citizens. In practice, they are nothing more than subjects from the central Moscow metropolis. The only significant differences from the colonial past of Europe are the historical time, the fact that these conquered Russian regions did not achieve independence, and the contiguity of the "federation" in comparison with the ultra-marine character of the past colonies of Europe. And by the way, today's Europeans are ashamed (or at least should be) for what their ancestors did in colonial times.
The Russian Federation is an evil empire, everything that Hitler wanted for his people in the 1930s... A central metropolis surrounded by occupied territories, home to people considered "inferior" and servants of the capital's autocratic regime, where an indifferent elite lives a luxurious life at the expense of the poor and ignorant.

"Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili blamed for starting Russian war
An investigation into last year's Russia-Georgia war delivered a damning indictment of President Mikheil Saakashvili today, accusing Tbilisi of launching an indiscriminate artillery barrage on the city of Tskhinvali that started the war.
In more than 1,000 pages of analysis, documentation and witness statements, the most exhaustive inquiry into the five-day conflict dismissed Georgian claims that the artillery attack was in response to a Russian invasion, accused both sides of violations of the laws of war, indicated that war crimes had been perpetrated against Georgian civilians and rejected Russian claims of "genocide" in the breakaway Georgian province of South Ossetia.
The EU-commissioned report, by a fact-finding mission of more than 20 political, military, human rights and international law experts led by the Swiss diplomat, Heidi Tagliavini, was unveiled in Brussels today after nine months of work.
"There is no way to assign overall responsibility for the conflict to one side alone," the report found.
But the conclusions will discomfit the western-backed Georgian leader, Saakashvili, who was found to have started the war with the attack on Tskhinvali, the South Ossetian capital, on the night of 7 August last year, through a "penchant for acting in the heat of the moment".
The war started "with a massive Georgian artillery attack", the report said, citing an order from Saakashvili that the offensive was aimed at halting Russian military units moving into South Ossetia.
Flatly dismissing Saakashvili's version, the report said: "There was no ongoing armed attack by Russia before the start of the Georgian operation ... Georgian claims of a large-scale presence of Russian armed forces in South Ossetia prior to the Georgian offensive could not be substantiated ... It could also not be verified that Russia was on the verge of such a major attack."

    1. "popularity on the rise". that's a known effect - Rally 'round the flag effect
    2. there are actual laws that threaten wide range (from a fine of 1 average monthly salary and up to 15 years in prison) for "fakes about and discrediting of special military operation". people are detained, put in jail for couple of days and fined for anything against war (blank piece of paper, piece of paper with 8 asterisks (that's "coded" no to war in russian), demonstration of Tolstoy's "war and piece", naming war "war" and not military operation, and even for full (word-for-word) quote of last year putin's own speech - 9 may 2021). more than 15 000 people are detained amidst anti war protests, more then 60 criminal cases are open (from 5 to 15 years of prison), hundreds of fines are doled out already
2.5 anything and I mean *anything* that you say about this war that was not said by russian "ministry of defense" is considered fake and punishable by law
    3. there are only state funded media left
    4. state media tv is running all day long with "informational broadcast" with propaganda
even this comment is sure to fetch me at least a fine (people are prosecuted for posts in social networks (vkontakte, facebook, instagram, twitter) for comments in telegram, for retweets, sometimes even for likes (in vkontakte mostly).
You are considered a witness in some case? be prepared for police to take away all your electronic devices (hard drives, laptops, phones, pcs, thumbdrives) and never see them again (seized during search of your home, which just may be breached by force); be prepared to be taken to "give your testimony" for over 10 hours in police station while your lawyer (even if you have one) will not be allowed to enter.

      p.s.
These are numbers based on mostly anecdotal evidence, but still
      * at least 30% are wholeheartedly pro-war in country. no two ways about it. (basis: models based on latest election)
      * another 20-30% have weird stance on it like "yeah war is bad, but that's all vicious west who started it and also there are nazis everywhere in ukraine" (basis: anecdotal evidence of ~150 ppl I personally spoke with. 20 - 80 yo, factory workers, retirees, ex-military, architects, software developers, sales ppl, business owners)
      * ~20% on the fence (basis: same as before)
      * 15-20% are strongly anti-war (basis: same as before + those "nationwide surveys")
Not sure about whole "destroy everything" and "dangerous for the world" labels for every russian out there. I am of opinion that if there will be change of regime / change of story (that propaganda is peddling), within a month or so general opinion will sway in completely opposite direction

Are you kidding me? In Russia, only a pitiful minority (who have seized power in the United States and are doing what they want) are dissatisfied with the Special Military Operation. Most have already sick and tired of what the United States was doing through a puppet government in the southwestern fragment of Russia, where, according to Google statistics, 80% of requests were made in Russian, but thanks to the United States, even school education in Russian is prohibited there, and collaborators who performed in the ranks of the SS troops were elevated into the ranks "national" heroes. So that you understand the stupidity of what is happening: "Ukraine" is a complete onalog of the Russian word "Okraina", which means "Outskirts". It's like if the residents of Texas declare themselves a separate nation after the collapse of the United States, and then China establishes its regime there and will set them up against the rest of the Americans. Is this normal? Everything okay? Therefore, Putin's support among the Russian population is as high as ever. Everyone is tired of this bacchanalia of the USA and their European vassals.

These are the "logical" reasons why a Russian dictator like Putin would want to invade Ukraine, and whilst they all make sense, I question whether this has been Putin's main reason for invading. Evidence suggests that what Vladimir Putin cares most about is not Russia or its people, not even the spread of NATO, but simply "maintaining or growing his personal wealth and power". Since about 2010, Putin has been unable to significantly grow the wealth of Russia or its people, so he has resorted to territorial "grabs" from former USSR states as a distraction from his own growing illicit wealth and centralising of power. Having Ukraine on its borders, becoming a successful trading democracy with a fast-improving standard of living, and sharing that knowledge with Russians through its media and social media, shows Russians that there IS another way, and Russia does not need a dictator to be strong and secure. Putin could not allow that situation to develop further.
