Brother, straightaway I would say first is getting into contact with the union (I’m with ANMF, I would imagine you have something similar in NZ?) They deal with that sorta thing, professional indemnity insurance and such. To be even able to get my license I need to have insurance.
Just tell them (a representative of the federation) your story. These federations are run by nurses, for nurses, so they would be able to understand your situation and where you’re coming from. They CAN help. Especially to do with the legal side of things - not saying that there will be legal involvement necessary but they can point you in the right direction, and in some cases, even a representative can speak on your behalf to relevant personnel.
Secondly, thank you for sharing this with me. I feel your frustration and I feel privileged and trusted to be able to hear this from you so openly. I’m sorry I can’t do much through a screen but if you’re ever down in Tassie I’m around and you know that.
Thirdly, you may feel lost currently - and that’s completely understandable and valid. I had a period of my life in which my student registration has a restriction to practice due to my multiple suicide attempts, mental health issues and ‘problematic’ ideations (which is deemed unsafe to practice by the Board). I had to undergo treatments and monitoring for months before i was even reviewed again. And I DID NOT lose my licence and eventually i finished uni and got registered fully. There was still a restriction on my registration and my managers, and employers can see that. Additionally i have to be monitored by psychiatrists and psychologists every 3 months.
I TOTALLY get it where you’re coming from. If there’s anyone qualified to speak on this topic it would be me. The staff in the department I work at KNOW this about me, the staff in ER that looked after me KNOW this (I also worked there 😂) and the psych ward KNOWS this. I have to say, it DOES make it easier being in a small country town everybody knows your business and some even have empathy for me. But then, there are also downsides, as you know - loss of privacy, sometimes even differential treatment as you’re deemed ‘unsafe’ 😂 I get it brother. I had to put up with that shit for a while. At the end of the day, I’m just playing the game. And I think about my patients, which is the most important thing - and I’m glad you think the same. That’s the most important thing brother.
Lastly, HR and people who suck up to management AREN’T your friends. Nothing is confidential 😂 I’m playing chicken with them on my videos, i know they watch my videos. I don’t care if it’s not professional. Snakes, like you said. But when your trust has been eroded, there’s no coming back from that. As long as you say the ‘correct’ things and restrict yourself from saying certain things you’ll be fine.
To end, I’d like to give you a quote from Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor:
“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms-to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”
My comment on that: they can take away everything from me, fire me from my job, put me in jail, castrate me, isolate me, silence me… But as long as my mind is free I am FREE. You can think ANYTHING in your head bro, they are just thoughts. Thoughts come and go 😂 they aren’t ‘problematic’ as long as you have good insights, you know what is acceptable and unacceptable, and you don’t act on them.
    Best of luck,
    Your brother in Christ,
    Khoi
