Living in Bali is cheaper, easier and more comfortable but I'm still moving to Portugal: here's why

  • I've just returned to Bali after spending three months getting established in Lisbon: finding a home, opening a bank account, and doing all the groundwork necessary to apply for the new Digital Nomad Visa.
In this video, I discuss the contrast of life between Bali and Lisbon -- and why despite the fact that my life in Bali is demonstrably easier and more comfortable, I'm still moving forward with my decision to move to Portugal.

Thank you for providing this update! It was nice to hear the contrast between the two places. Despite the challenges with adjusting to your new life in Lisbon, I'm genuinely thrilled you have a more engaging social life there. Much needed. Fingers crossed you meet "the one"!

The transparency is really inspiring. I’m a 21 year old from Sweden looking to move. I was in Bali for 2 months and fell in love with it but had the same sorta realisations you’ve had pointed out in some of your videos. Girlfriend wants to move to Portugal. And in a funny coincidence I found this channel and been binging all the videos to see what country to choose. The biggest downside to Portugal would be the housing situation. I’m moving from Sweden because the housing politics are the shitiest in the world just to go to another country with sorta the same issues but shittier pay. Anyway getting sidetracked. Keep these videos up. I’d love to see some day to day stuff even if I get you’re probably very very busy and it’s not my place to tell you how to run your channel hah.

I love your vulnerability and honesty. I left the states in 2012 and haven't been back since. I spent 10 years in SE Asia and am now in the country of Georgia, near Turkey. I was wondering where you had your plastic surgery done? How did you make sure that they were good? I am in the process of losing a lot of weight and may need skin tightening procedures. But, I have heard horror stories about Thailand and Turkey, although I know that these are up and coming places for surgery. I may also have it done in India or Vietnam if I need it. Also, I understand your culture shock. I enculturated in SE Asia. So, moving to Turkey and then Georgia was definitely a bit of culture shock. I can't imagine the shock of going back to the states. I saw your pictures from when you were in India and doing the yogi thing. I thought that you were beautiful. I don't know when you had your surgeries, but at that time you were just gorgeous. I also have spent a lot of time in India and Nepal. Anyway, I think that you are awesome and I love your channel. I love that you are living your life unapologetically being who you are!!! Fully support you! I also know what it's like to be limited in dating in Asia. I moved to Asia at 37. I am straight, but most men my age are already married unless they are stepping out on their wives. So, my dating options were usually men in the late 20s that wouldn't go anywhere because the families wouldn't approve blah, blah, blah. I am sure you understand. I just adore you as a bright soul and fabulous being that I haven't met in this life time. I hope that you meet a wonderful partner in Lisbon. I am on opera singer. At some point I will move to Germany. I am also more European.

Thank you for the lovely comment…I have had a bit of work done over the years in many countries including in Thailand and in Turkey. Just don’t look for the cheapest option and usually you’re safe. Of course also read reviews and meet the doctor in person. It’s important that they have a good facility.

Hello from CA. Indonesia is a traditional society. I was there at your age and found romance with other Americans & Europeans and traveled extensively throughout the islands but knew deep down i could not
fit long term in the society(didn't like covering up in the heat) and want to talk & go out. Love is very important, sharing your life with someone, common interests and so forth & don't forget about hormones! No amount of plastic surgery, injections can completely reverse aging! Take care, brave one.

Hi Adrien, thank you for sharing your story, it really felt like you were telling my story as a Bali expat of 5 years as well. New adventures are so enriching and it's interesting how Bali does captivate a piece of our hearts and seems to be a bit difficult to let go. I was so curious about your Portugal digital nomad visa. Do you work for a company or are you self employed. I was wondering if it works the same way as the Spain DNV and you need to work for a company and have a contract with them etc. Europe is really a dream for me but visas have me circling around to find the right one as a Canadian. Look forward to more Portugal content!

Love your authenticity and style. One thing I have to say about Lisbon though, I went there last summer and it was smelling pee everywhere, on every street. I was shocked. Then I googled and it’s a common issue it seems.

Clothes last a lot longer air drying, those tumble dryers kill them.

At the end of the day I supposed its all about personal taste of men you attracted Darl. In my opinion you definitely need to find someone that’s you love but dating is quite challenging and if your partner taste is caucasian I supposed you have to settled in Europe, but who knows world is pretty small these days. So my advice is what’s best for your business and love. Maybe 6 months Europe during summer and 6 months winter time in Bali for business

Hi Adrien! The digital nomad visa requires a monthly income certificate of 2,800 euros. Are the bank income details required for half a year? As an individual business, are 882 and 892 also acceptable? I have been watching all your videos and your thoughts are inspiring. I'm thinking just like you. This is very important to me. Thank God for letting me see all the processes you've experienced. Bless you for realizing your dream, which you have achieved.

Rental prices in Bali are no longer cheap. The housing market is in a huge bubble due to so many foreigners trying to leave europe and russia. Becareful who and what kind of villa you rent, the sharks are abundant.

You washed your hair and you felt your hair dirtier?? Maybe you washed your hair with water from the river, that makes sense. I know bali isn't that bad.

Bali is for older people looking to slow down. Doesn't make sense for anyone under 50, nobody needs a dishwasher
