    Thanks for the video great comparison. I personally tried both lenses on my A7III and I can say Batis all the way, sharper then GM, also better in terms of colours and contrast. The GM has manual controls on the lens this could be a plus but in therms of glass and autofocus I personally find the Batis is much better.

    Any wide angle lens comparaisin should include a ‘sweet spot of the lens’ aperture comparaison, maybe f4 or f8. Cause people who buy wide angle lenses often want a large depth of field in their photo, and not so much blurry backgrounds and or foregrounds.
    I am sure the Batis being smaller, lighter, warmer in tones (thanx to your video) might have also proven to be at par with GE lenses in terms of sharpness at those aperture, and won me over.
    Not everyone is a vlogger :) we buy wide angle lenses for get the wise angle in focus (often)
    Great video.

    The Sigma might win me over, but not for the reason you expect. Availability. I have had the GM on backorder for about a month here in the states. I have events coming up in early February, and I could really use a wide angle prime.

    You may wanna send your Batis in as the chroma is absolutely not common in this lens. I also have it and my copy has literally none. I also have the 24mm sigma (old canon times) and I have to say that the two are very much close to each other on performance. For some reason Zeiss despite a smaller aperture can capture almost the same perf as sigma (1.4 vs 2.0) Check it out, you'll be amazed

      I was thinking the same, putting down the batis like it's quite inferior seems to me his lens may have an issue. I'm very pleased with mine!

    Great review, thank you! Normally, I don't put much weight on corner sharpness, especially not wide open. Having rented the 24mm GM for a week, though, it really sets the lens apart. I love being able to frame environmental portraits or even more intimate portraits and be certain that no matter where your subject is, they'll be pin sharp. The lens resolves so cleanly, that I felt comfortable cropping into pictures much more than with other similar lenses. For me, it's worth the extra in this case!

    Hi! Great comparison! Just a small detail when comparing Sigma and GM lenses wide open. The Sigma has a busier bokeh. This is not however due to the aperture blades (9 vs. 11) because wide open it's completely round anyway. The differences in the background blur has to do with the lens elements and how they are made. The Sigma is made using "traditional" grinding process for the elements while the GM is produced using a special patented molding process, at least for some of the elements. That explains both the reduction of "busyness" and "onion rings".

  • @mtp_studios
    @mtp_studios 5 років тому +3

    Maybe since wide angles are usually used for landscapes where eye auto focus and bokeh dont matter you could test sharpness where people shoot wide angles around f8. You didn't even test the samyang and it and the 28 f2 are the most likely to be used by a hiker that wants to travel light. Maybe another review of testing what the majority of wide angle lenses are used for? Would love to see how sharp they are if they are good enough for landscapes. Great idea though testing out all the wide options.

  • @michael1326
    @michael1326 5 років тому

    Chromatic aberrations are easily corrected in post - so not much of a concern. Due to my preferences in color and contrast, there is no reason to upgrade from the batis to GM - the sharpness isn’t significant enough to justify the move.

    Great video as usual, thank you. Does Sony GM lens has focus pulsing when you move to subject or from subject when shooting video at f1.4? Where You loose focus for a bit and then acquire it again? So it's a bit difficult to do push in or pull out video moves. Or you not supposed to shoot video at f1.4 do to thin dof?

  • @drashadibudi

    Hai Chris, great video. I am really curious to compare the 24 MM GM with the 1635 GM. I usually use the 1635 GM for wide shot and also the 35 at 2.8 for the portrait shot. Do you think that the 24 mm GM can replace the 16 to 35 GM range? I you sure shot for travelling photography. So light weight is a great option

    • @jeremiahcheongwl

      One is f1.4 and the other is f2.8. Aperture is always the priority no matter what. 24mm gm is wide enough yet beautiful enough for wide portraits with its f1.4. Night/Astro photography is king on the 24mm.

    Hello Chris. Do your recommend the GM 24mm 1.4 over the Sony Zeiss 35mm 1.4, for group portraits, in weddings? I have the Sony Zeiss 35mm, but feel that the GM24mm would be much better, especially in terms of sharpness and wider angle. Have you used the 24mm GM in such settings, often? Thinking of selling the 35mm for the 24mm.

      " So, the 24mm GM seems to be better, if you know how to shoot with such wide angle. I used a 28mm FE lens, and it didn't seem that difficult, as you get used to it. One has to be aware of the wider angle, for sure, and where the subjects will be in the frame.

      Cinematographic Quests Just google : depth of field and bokeh H Nasse . You shall find a long article (pdf) . The second part is about bokeh. The shape of the iris has an influence only on the shape of the highlights and of course not when wide open. The most important factors influencing the quality of the bokeh which come from the lens, are optical (aberrations ) or mechanical ( vigneting) . Note that the mechanical vigneting ( cat’s eye) can increase the DoF where it appears but also create the famous swirly bokeh.

    The legend for first comparison at f2.8 for the tree photos are different from what you are saying. You said sony x batis but those were not at the legends

    What about compared to the Canon Lii 24 1.4

    • @ChrisTurnerPhotographer
      @ChrisTurnerPhotographer  5 років тому +1

      I’ve tried that one on the 5DSR and it’s pretty decent. I think it’s a bit old now, I don’t think it’s as good as the new Gen lenses

      Chris Turner interesting. From what I’ve heard, that’s definitely the best 24mm in the Canon lineup and those who’ve compared it to other 24s that were out before the Sony 24 GM said that the Canon Lii 24 was the best performing 24mm. However, no one on UA-cam has done a great comparison between these 2 lenses. That’s why I asked. Thanks for responding

      As far as I know it’s the only 24mm prime for full frame that canon make haha I have directly compared it to the sigma and the sigma was better on the same camera. But honestly at the end of the day they are all pretty close.

      Chris Turner thanks for sharing that. Congrats on your channels growth. I’ve been watching quiet a few of your videos this last week. Great content. Keep it coming. If you could make one on the focus mode demonstration of a bride going down the isles but eye focus is not catching her eye. I’m assuming you use flexible Spot L for this but how do you pull it off at F1.4

    can live with the sigma 24mm coz of it’s price.

      Oh it's a great lens. Don't take it like it's not, really the only thing is the video focus is good but not fantastic. I have the Sigma 35 and 50 and they are both great.

    Yes, maybe Sigma is cheapper, but the sigma 24 has loud autofocus on continous mode. At least on the Nikon it is. Is it different for Sony? Sony 24 has a silent AF so this is an undoubted advantage.

    I didn't know Sigma has 24mm f1.4, would had got that. I just got a 24mm GM. I guess for the extra money, you get the best of the best...

    Too much lenses to compare. You can reduce the list to 2 or 3 lenses before you make the video.

    I just wonder why and how different lenses give you different colors. The sensor is what makes the color.

    • @ChrisTurnerPhotographer
      @ChrisTurnerPhotographer  5 років тому

      Nope. Quality of glass changes colour dramatically. Try some old film lenses.

    These Camera and lens manufacturers must think we are idiots...Only interested in knobs and buttons..A 24mm 1.4 lens for £1450 in the U.K. and €1600 in Europe should be perfect as near as possible and should totally stand out from a lens costing 15% of the price ...These tests completely put me of buying a new lens as I realise they are not any different from the one I already own.and if so? very minimal ..I look at my photos from years ago and the quality looks no different...Yet I love technology but only when there is a drastic change such as SD -HD. Or HD-UHD nowadays most enervation is pure gimmick like animal Eye Autofocus...If the Autofocus is so good then you should be able to focus easily on the face of a pet.Now face detection is no good you must have eye detection...What happened to Sony’s lock on Autofocus..You just need to focus on the face ..IPhones and pocket cameras can record video in 60p yet Sony might announce a new Sony A7 S 3 which records in 60p and everyone will run out and buy it for €4000.
