    I went with the Batis 25. The thing is a tank and is extremely well weather sealed (see lensrental's teardown), all while being super light. The OLED is criticized a lot but it makes astro so easy and fast to nail focus. It is just the perfect lens for hiking and camping. Oh and the image quality is top notch too.

    Thanks for the comparison. I have both lenses now as previously I only had the Batis. I was very curious to test both lenses out so I ordered the GM.... After a couple of tests with both photos and video I can say Batis is performing better for me, I love colours and contrast much better and also I find my Batis sharper compared to the GM. Video wise I would say they are extremely close but I find the Batis picking up the focus faster.
    GM has a plus with manual controls with AF-MF - aperture buttons and rarely better light control.
    Sending the GM back and keeping my beast Batis :)
    Test done with Sony A7III

      Thank you for this comment! I've been torn between the batis (18mm 2.8) and Sony 24mm 2.8. 24mm seems more versatile but I get the feeling that Batis is also sharper (and I like the punchy colors too!)

    I think they are both great for different case uses especially if you’re able to have both. Zeiss being more of a travel friendly lens great for street/documentary photography and landscape work while the g master is better for studio work, portraiture as well as landscapes for those who do it professionally

    This is a great and informative video. My first Zeiss lens was the Sony Zeiss 55/1.8. That lens blew me away and I fell in love with the "Zeiss look". Initially, I always thought the Sony 24/1.4 and 35/1.4 would be the ultimate lenses for me. However, they are still extremely expensive, even when buying used. I was able to pick up a used Batis 25 and Batis 40 for a little bit more than a new Sony 24/1.4. I know the Sony is a bit sharper, and it clearly won the bokeh test. But at the end of the day, I've fallen in love with that Zeiss look. And being able to get the 25 and 40 for roughly the same price as a single Sony lens was a no brainer for me. Even if I had the budget for both Sony lenses, I would have chosen Zeiss.

    The better contrast and color saturation comes from the better coating of the Zeiss lenses. Probably Zeiss did not go for 1.4 Aperature because this makes compromises in other departments like distortion, aberations, etc. Most likely the Sony lens has them, but they are corrected in camera software. My prefference is to have the better optical lense with contrast and colors and dump that extreme sharpnes and wide aperature. No one tells you the compromises behind that sharpness and aperature, you have to figure this out by yourself :) modern consumers do not go that far :D

    The felt-lining in the lens hood exists to absorb and minimize stray light reflections from bouncing off of the hood and entering into the lens itself. It actually can make a pretty big difference in certain situations.

    I am a still landscape photographer and I chose the Sony 24mm 1.4 GM, I have read tons reviews and seen hours of video reviews, I am very happy with the Sony, but I wish that Sony and/or others will make lenses that can cope a lot better with high resolution sensors and have much better sharpness and better vignetting in the corners !

    The 3D pop on the Zeiss is just insane. I don't get why people aren't aware of this phenomenon. We should all be demanding the big manufacturers (but Sony at the very least) to take notes from Zeiss and prioritize this over clinical sharpness. But it won't happen because very few talk about this and so it's not the metric manufacturers optimize for anymore save for Zeiss, sigh.

    i know it's an older video but, at 6:25 the comment is "i enjoy the batis more." "seeing a little more of the store.." That very well can be. However, the GM can be set at F2.0 but the BATIS can not be set at 1.4. It would be logical to compare them both at the same f stop. Which you do later in the video. Good job.

    If you want to impress your friends with spec sheets, buy gm master, if you want to impress them with photos, choose the Batis. Preferred the Bohka on the Batis and the contrast range.
    I used to hunger the low F numbers once, until I realised most of my shots were somewhere in the middle of the range anyway, rarely do you have a subject that looks better with a low depth of field. For new guys, save your money and avoid the F1.2, F1.4 etc, nothing wrong with going F2 lens or above with a decent modern camera.
    Boy, that GM lens to me looks ugly as sin next to the Batis, looks like forest gumps light saber.

    Hello again Matt....its been 4 months since I posted here and wanted to give an update. Based on reviews such as yours and many others I moved forward and bought the Sony 24mm GM over the Batis 25mm. I admit that my Milvus lenses have spoiled me and I expected similar IQ out of the Sony when compared to the former. Auto-focusing on the Sony has been kind of hit or miss and I do miss the heft of Zeiss glass. I think this one will be up for sale soon. Take care! Go Nuggets!!! :)

    Just saw this a year after you put it out there but I owned the Batis from when it first came out and then did move to the Sony GM. I loved my Batis lenses but have switched over to the GM/G family at 20, 24, 50, 85, and 135. i still own the Batis 40 though since the 50 GM is larges for walking around but the Batis 40 is perfect. Admit moving to all of the faster lenses is nice but may have just wasted a bunch of money to chase it. One thing I noticed in your direct comparison is that the Batis 25 actually looks to have a wider field of view than the GM 24 which was unexpected. Did you see this?
    Anyway, thanks for the review.

      Hi Steven - thanks for stopping by - sure feels like a long time since I made this and had a Batis in my kit! I've gone fully GM except for the Zeiss Sony 50mm f1.4 and couldn't be happier. And yeah, the Batis 25 I believe has a slightly shallower flange distance and the lens is shorter itself, creating the illusion of a wider field of view when placed on the same camera on the same sticks in the same place. A little weird!

    An interesting thing I noticed after using the 24mm gmaster for half a year (and seen this in comparisons as well): The 24mm gmaster (don't know about the other lenses in the series) are designed to reduce contrast in out of focus areas. There are situations where this is preferable as it REALLY pops out the in-focus subject more than anything else (especially paired with its sharpness). However, you've demonstrated some images where in fact it is not preferable and a more contrasty out-of-focus area gives the better look.
    An important consideration when choosing either of these wonderful tools.
    Oh and the contrast difference on the gmaster between f/1.4 and f/2.4 is enormous.

    That was great! Subscribed.. as far as the lenses go... If money is not an issue the Sony is definitely the lens I would go with as you can't beat the Sharpness and the Bokeh is amazing! not to mention the little bit of extra low light performance which to me is important. If you are a perfectionist the G Master is the way to go, however if money is tight the Batis is still a pretty remarkable lens. You can't go wrong with either... but I can see your dilemma Matt having them both... but the good thing about that is it makes it easier to know which lens to keep being able to compare the photos side by side. Too bad the Sony doesn't look a cool as the Zeiss...:)

      I've watched the comparisons on fredmiranda between the gmaster and loxia over and over. If I were a landscape shooter almost exclusively, I'd have gone with the Loxia. The sunstars and overall sharpness / contrast / color at long focus distance are unmatched on the Loxia. The G master is the better all rounder and kind of favours environmental stuff like street, wide open shots etc. Super fast autofocus, too. To oversimplify/summarise: they're both perfect lenses for that they're designed for, and choosing between Gmaster and Loxia means choosing between f 1.4 / autofocus, and manual focus / superior (!!!) sunstars, respectively. I opted for the 24mm Gmaster since my shooting is quite allround.

      The GM edges out the Batis in speed for sure, and the focus pull when in auto is just a touch smoother.

    if you had a choice. Would you go with the 135gm or the 24gm? I currently own the sony 85 1.8. I am looking to shoot home videos and professional video of my children for their IG. Also, looking to offer professional portraits such as headshots and senior pics.

    • @MattJackson_YouTube

      Considering you already have a great portrait lens in the 85mm, go for the 24mm GM. They’re a great complement to each other.

      It's a great deal on that lens, but I would be careful that it doesn't have any issues with the glass or mechanics at that price.

    The GM doesn’t have a gasket seal?

    • @MattJackson_YouTube
      @MattJackson_YouTube  4 роки тому +1

      It doesn't. It's weather sealed itself, but does not create a barrier between the lens and camera similar to the Batis.

    • @sic04250f
      @sic04250f 4 роки тому

      Yes it does have a seal, it's black. Same as my 20mm, 24-105 and 100-400 GM.

    Great review. Nice to have some humour thrown in with our lens obsession... May I ask- do you think there's validity in sticking with only say Batis lenses for uniformity of look and feel, or are you happily mix and matching GM and Zeiss... Seems like the best native Sony lenses at this time are mix and match- the older co-branded Sony/Zeiss (the 35 f1.4 and 50 1.4), then the newer GM 24 f.4 and 135 1.8 look amazing. The Batis series to me look like a solid choice (tough, reliable, weather-sealed) but get overlooked because they chose to go slower and lighter, and they're quite expensive for the aperture... I see a magic in Zeiss though, hard to pinpoint, but this game of images is subjective, and the smoothness to the out of focus areas that's very natural, less clinical...

    • @MattJackson_YouTube
      @MattJackson_YouTube  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much! I absolutely think there’s something to be said for having a “set” of lenses. While I prefer the color and contrast of the Zeiss lenses straight out of camera, its the functionality of the GM lenses and older Sony Zeiss lenses that make them my choice lenses. Right now, I definitely mix and match, but I’m in the process of upgrading to all GM lenses. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment - great observations!
