- The Turbo Duo is a console from NEC that combines the Turbografx and Turbografx CD into one console. This rare console is complete in box and is in pristine condition, but unfortunately it's no longer working. On this week's episode of Fix it Friday, we show you how to replace all the capacitors on this console, which will hopefully bring it back to life!

I bought one of these from a game store in MD in 1998, still have it. It was also CIB. Even back then I had to pay $400 which tracking inflation was quite a preeeety penny! Where I saved was buying anything I could from Turbo Zone Direct, so I got some major sealed heavy hitters like Godzilla, Splatterhouse, and more for $30 or so each. They sold new old stock stuff well into the early 00's til they ran out.
Damn that’s amazing! I didn’t get into NEC stuff until later in life, but it’s such an awesome console. Tons of great games!
I grew up in the UK, and the TG-16 was this mythical console that I saw in a display case at my local game store, but could never hope to own. I only learned about the Turbo-Duo when I started my collection again in the US and bagged my TG-16. I am really hoping Analogue release their turbo duo soon because I feel that's my only chance of owning something like this.
Note: If you don’t already know the TurboDuo CD games are region free and the Japanese model is much less expensive. HuCards are region locked but you can get an adapter or region mod to play TG16 or PC Engine games. I fear scalpers will scoop up the Analogue Duo and the price will far more expensive than original hardware
Yes I do hope that analogue eventually do release their version of the duo
funny thing is that hasn't been the case so far, analogue duo can still be preordered. Hopefully they will release it soon.
Damn that looks like a tedius affair, I gotta yoink a junk pce duo at some point.
I like snipping the surface mount caps with flush cuts going parallel with the legs. I know a lot of people have grips with snipping caps but hot air is way too sketchy on caps like this.
I've had caps legit explode on me before the solder was molten due to the crusty pads like this on a pce gt.
Good shit as always my dude :D
I’ll try that technique next time. I also try to avoid the hot air because I have also had caps explode in my face lol. Working on one of these is definitely a challenge but I know you’re up to the task. Always a pleasure to see your excellent work!
@@LIRetroGaming Thanks brotha and likewise! :D
I.. this one console I've always wanted in my personal collection "CIB or not". Regardless I love watching you repair/fix older hardware.
The TurboDuo is one of my all time favorite consoles. Has a sleek high tech look that’s timeless. CD games are region free so only need an adapter for PC Engine games. Get one even if it’s the Japanese DUO model that’s usually cheaper
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! Yes I always feel privileged when I have one of these systems to work on, and it feels great when they come back to life
Its a shame those units got such horrible capacitors whereas the Japanese Turbo Duo R and RX seem to generally have escaped that.
Yeah the biggest difference is that the duo r and rx use through hole caps whereas these are surface mount. A lot of those surface mount caps from the mid 90s are very bad
My turbo duos eject button stopped working
The only way I know it is Friday ✌️
Once again, a great, detailed video. Good job!
Alway nice to see console come back from dead.
Do modern caps fix the aging problem of these old caps, or will someone have to do the same repair again in a few decades?
It does fix things but all caps have a lifespan. Hopefully these should be good for another 25 years
After 20 years most of the laser lenses are broken. Is there a possibility to replace the cd laser unit of a Tubo Duo?
Yes there are replacements for the duo laser
Everytime Inwatch one of your repair videos I learn new tricks of the trade. Great stuff!
My turboduo works but now i out of no where lost sound to it.
If the capacitors are original then the corrosion may have messed up the connections to the audio amplifiers near the power supply.
This was such a great time in gaming, all these old cd rom top loading systems are so cool
Good Job and i applaud your patience!
🐠 👃
Still have my boxed Turbo Duo that I got from the Turbo ML 20+ years ago, eventually got it recapped and adjusted (could probably do it myself but didn't want to risk it), redbook audio sounds fine at first but suddenly cuts out after a while. Was told that one or more of the op-amps might be bad, so I'll try replacing them someday (already practiced on a Japanese Duo). Also have an oscilloscope but have never tried adjusting the pots before, haven't found too much info and/or videos on adjusting them yet.
It’s very likely the op amps. I would start with that first before messing around with the potentiometers
I remember how “fun” it was replacing 60 or so capacitors in my turbo duo. It was well worth it but I’m glad it’s over.
Yeah, it’s lots of “fun.” Working on these consoles is exhausting every time, but it certainly feels good when I get them working
Nice
I always appreciate the opening theme tune, what's that from? Thanks for the video!
Thanks glad you enjoyed the videos! That opening tune is actually the game over sound from the gremlins 2 on NES
I had a turbo express
They certainly are awesome. I am fortunate enough to have one
Wow that box is crispy 👌.
