- We received a Turbo Duo with a botched region free mod, and it was "repaired" with very low quality capacitors. The console no longer runs any games and needs to be properly restored. On this week's Halloween Fix it Friday, can we overcome the Curse of Big Chongus and get this console working again?

That original mod looked like a Doujindance mod.... Hey, I have that same version of Rondo Of Blood 😉
It might have been doujindance, but he also used to use epoxy glue on the consoles. That stuff is terrible to remove
I bought this Duo a few years ago knowing it was modded & recapped but not the horrors inside. It worked but the region mod produced static in games sound when PC Engine HuCards were played so I discontinued playing HuCards moving forward. Always intended to have region mod corrected and when ordering the region mod your team noticed the caps were poor quality and should be replaced so I ordered that service too. I do have the TurboChip lid, didn’t send with cuz not needed for the mod. Awesome seeing this TurboDuo being rescued! Excellent work George!

Region mods like this or 8pdt push buttons switches were pretty much the norm and what most modders used around 13-16 years ago. Kind of dumb that someone installed the grounding plate over it though. That's probably what killed the region board.

Love watching your repair videos. How often do you usually work on old consoles? Is this kind of thing your day job?
It’s a side job, I probably put in about 20 hours a week on repairs and mods. I enjoy my day job too, but working on video game consoles is the best!
What a nightmare. I worry some of the mods I install are going to look like that to anyone in the future who may service my devices lol

Why not to use tantalum capacitors? They will be enough until the end of life of the item.
Tantalums don’t have the same properties of electrolytics. In some cases it’s ok to change over to tantalums but not always
Is there a way to install a multi tap into the console itself?
You can switch the av connector with a new one that also has pins for rgb

i found a turbo duo in a thrift store years ago for $2. all it had with it was just a controller
