Some leap.. I m Irish and went to all 3 tests back in 87 when the compromise football between Ireland and Australia were played in Croke Park.. Lots of punch ups but some amazing football.. I remember being fascinated by how high the rules players could leap and how they could hang in the air waiting for the ball.. Great stuff.. Jim Stynes played then.. One tough cookie

If you run it in slow motion (repeatedly pausing it), you'll see that it was a mark. He momentarily held it in his right arm between his right elbow and body. That's why he claimed it too, because he knew he had control except for the fact that he hit the ground hard and it bounced out.

I too agree this is a mark, no bias here, not a Geelong or Collingwood supporter or hater.
It was GeelongFC mark of the century not AFL/VFL mark of the century just to be clear.
The AFL/VFL mark of the century was by Shaun Smith in 1995.
Personally though, any mark that comes loose before or after they hit the deck shouldn't be in any best/top50 etc video and definitely shouldn't be mark of the year, I'm looking at Nic Nat 2015 (dropped before he landed) and Jeremy Howe 2012 (come loose after landing). We need to set higher standards.
This mark by Ablett wouldn't even make my top 100, maybe even 200, only because the ball coming loose after landing. There's plenty better marks by him imo.

Pause the replay at 1:54 just as the bottom of his number 5 touches the ground. You can clearly see (unless you're blind or a Hawthorn/Collingwood supporter) that he has the ball controlled between his chest and elbow. People can debate that he possibly didn't control it for long enough, but you CANNOT watch this replay and say he had no control / it was just luck. This guy was probably the best high marker ever to play the game. He knew exactly what he was doing and deliberately used his left arm to push it to the corner of his right arm where it stays until his elbow hits the ground. Also the umpire was only about the 30 metres out from goal with no players obstructing his view AND in the perfect position to see the ball in Ablett's right arm.

Clearly the best editing of the century did the ball even touch Gibletts hands um let see his wrist, his stomach the ground, so in spite of the freeze frames trying to make it look like it touched his hand there are a few replays and even after several replays i dont think it touched either of his hands maybe it was close to his left hand when the ball fell on his stomach. Hmm hang on I just had another couple of slo- mo replays and it does appear he holds it to his right side on the way down and the impact with the ground knocks the ball loose. Did he have it under control long enough, going by similar marks I've seen paid, yes. I reverse my view, it was a mark.

In Australian Football it is a mark and an optional free kick from the moment the umpire deems it a mark. If you get hit after the mark you can still get the ball and take your free. If you are injured a teammate can take it. The only true debate happens if the ball was touched by another player. This debate is due to the people not understanding the rules of the game and thinking that they do because their kid plays Auskick. Typing in all caps doesn't make a point.

@@alexandertahn9896 yeah in your dreams so whe was it in his left hand in the numerous replays. You say 'controlled it in his arms or stomach' so make up your mind did he control it in his arms. no because its no where near his right arm after it bounced off his wrist. OR did he control it in his stomach I have watched it many times and I am quite certain that he did not eat the ball so it was not controllled in his stomach.
