    Such a shame when a very old house with unique character has to be torn down due to years of neglect. Thank you Renee for taking us along on this pick. That home was probably beautiful at one time. Glad you are finding some treasures.

    I like the idea of reusing all the stuff we don't get around to when we were alive. We need more of the re-use and repurpose. I'm also with you when it comes to the house. All the best from Colorado.

    Fun! Do you ever look up the house histories on these picks? I try to do that whenever I hear about a house in my area about to be demolished.

      If you go to the public library and get a hold of the recent city directory you can scope out yard sales---It will tell you details about the house,occupations, then do some googling and voile! An advantage!

    Some great possibilities for a good root through there Renee in the mouldy home. Was the shell of a once beautiful house -accessable too. The cache of elephant fetishes was a bit strange and the crawlspace looked like it might hide something interesting among the rubble - apart from rodents - but would be a challenge. Glad to see you snag that stack of photos and passports! I would have liked those……

      I don’t know how he lived in the home, with things accumulating waist-high throughout other rooms. I’ve been in other hoarding situations where the person just finds a means to live around it. Sad that he probably had a lot of nice things that just went to ruin.

    Hard to know where to start! Cool pick, for sure. Hard to believe any paper survived that, but glad you got the die cuts, passports, photos, etc. Was trying to guess the age of the house. The molding on the outside in your intro looked vaguely Federal but I'm thinking more late 1800s / early 1900s? I had that Matchbox carrying wheel at 4:00 in the mid '70s - I remember airport security opening it for a cursory glance in the pre-9/11 fashion. My Mom had dressed me well too (I was 8 or so). The garage - holy return to Mother Earth - I think you interrupted a composting process. That had Tiffany stuff in it. I imagine you know this, or Tony told you - but the trunk at 5:37 is a Wells-Fargo type strong box from the mid-late 1800s - they can bring good money. The top one at about 5:43 is mid-1800s or slightly earlier, probably covered in deer or pony hair originally (what my wife calls a "pettable" trunk). Hand-forged handles. Probably for personal use. Maybe transported by Stage in its life. Could be $50-$100. Can't see the one underneath - hopefully all three haven't been ruined by mold. Even some of the lumber / moldings from furniture that is ruined could have value. Yeah, there comes a point when things have been neglected beyond repair. Our two houses have both been older homes in need of restoration. When house-hunting, we had to switch from saying, "That house could be beautiful," to, "We could make that house beautiful." Big difference. I always thought if I won the PowerBall, I would renovate some of these houses that were very far gone. But then I would have to play PowerBall. That was a great pick and fun to watch. Please do be careful about the mold - personally, I'm not big on PPE but it has cost me some. Hope you have a great Sunday afternoon and upcoming week. I am back to work on a new project which will probably be quite time consuming - I worked much of this weekend. Got to the FM and an estate sale but wasn't too much of interest. Love your staircase. Probably not one you want to go down (or up) hurriedly in socks! (My folks had a small, steep one like that which I went down faster than I intended many times!).

    • @PaperandMoose
      @PaperandMoose  8 місяців тому +2

      There have been a few times when I've almost slipped on my stairs! My younger cousin actually will take her socks off to go up/down the stairs for fear of slipping. I probably shouldn't dust/clean up the dust bunnies on them, they add some traction! Good eyes on the trunks and correct, the one was covered in some type of hair/fur at some point. It's smaller companion was further inside the stone garage. Sadly, the insides have been overcome with mold and home to mice. How that ephemera survived out there is beyond me. It was just sitting in a wooden box, not even covered. All from the late 1800s so far and mostly requests for payment. Oh the simplicity of doing business by mail back then! The die cut albums were inside the house, found by the new owners as they cleaned up the place. My mind tries not to think about what was thrown out in the 3-4 dumpsters that they filled, for if there were scrapbooks and ephemera from the 1800s, I can only imagine what might have been hidden in books and little nooks of drawers and closets! I hope that the new owners at least do some work on the stone garage. It has much potential as a little outside oasis during the spring and summer. Or one could give tours of the stalactites on the ceiling!
      Hope that your new project goes well and goes quicker than expected!

    The rise and decline of a household...seems that this old property has seen much better times. I like the old stone walls, built with a lot of knowledge. Mold upon mold, some pretty neat finds though. The Victorian die cut album was a stunner and in very nice shape ! Let´s hope that Anthony will be able to make a decent profit on this inventory at the flea market. This was an interesting adventure, Renée, keep it up and have a relaxing rest of this Sunday which is quite cold over here. 🌨Greets from GER, U.

    • @PaperandMoose
      @PaperandMoose  8 місяців тому +7

      The outdoor stone "garage" I hope will remain and perhaps can be restored into some type of summer "alcove". I imagine removing the garage door & stalagmites, though neat, and setting up some other type of door or even an old iron fence. A perfect area to sit out in during the summer mornings and evenings, enjoying the view and nature. From the papers found in the garage that I have, it appears that either a former former owner of the home, or a relative, was a postmaster. Thank goodness the correspondence that they saved managed to survive all these years out in a box in that garage!
      As for weather, I have multiple layers on right now even though I'm typing from the comfort of home. That winter chill has reached us, with a few days this week only reaching a high of mid-30 degrees!

    Starting my comment as I watch. I can only imagine what that house was. The amazing things it saw as a family grew and lived. It's huge and reminds me of a lot of the 90s shows we used to watch on TGIF. My Japanese teacher was obsessed with Phish. He talked about them all the time. Back to your video. That bunch of trolls remind me of when I was going through a huge box of clearance trolls at Meijer trying so hard to find a certain one for my dad and what did I find $5 and the troll. I can definitely see hoarder in the way things are just thrown about in odd places. The people who bought it probably saw the damage the rats had done to some of the pile and decided to just throw it out. Glad though Tony got an opportunity to save some of things from the landfill. Thanks for showing us another Tony adventure of a pick. Super nice of them to save things for you.

    I bet that place was a beauty in its day. I think people may intentionally get Toney messed up on these deals. It happens all the time. It upsets me. But I figure if he can forgive them, then I can, too. This looked like fun. But also very tiring. I wish you had been wearing a mask. My husband came home with me a roll top desk. He went tool shopping and ended up going to an antigue store. I don't think it is really an antigue. But I will think it is because he was sweet enough to get it for me. ❤❤ He is also going to have a man install revashelves in my kitchen. I am very excited about that.they slide out. And you can pull the top and bottom out separately.. Great for 5' old ladies with arthritis.😅 well I have rambled enough. I love you. Have a wonderful day. Stay safe and healthy.❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😘💞💞✌️👶

    Hello Renee. As someone who has had to go through a parents home that was a bit of a hoarder ,my mom , not my dad really. It’s a lot of work. I helped my sister do my moms for 3 days we did this and went to our mothers funeral. It was not fun nor easy. For the most of it it was clothes. But then there was clean out the fridge and that freezer it was horrible. To see this and know how clean my mother was I couldn’t believe it. We gave her neighbors some of the furniture and cloths went to donate. It was a hard thing to do. But I did as much as I could before I needed to get back home for work. I felt bad for leaving my sister to deal with the rest but we , my husband,and son had to get back. I’m glad you could save some things. Please be safe. 🕵🏼‍♀️🕵🏼‍♀️🕵🏼‍♀️🕵🏼‍♀️🕵🏼‍♀️🕵🏼‍♀️☕️🫖☕️🫖🥰🥰🥰💯💯💯💯💯💯💯

      I'm sure that your sister appreciated what help you were able to give! And the neighbors were probably grateful for the furniture. It is hard dealing with a family member that is a hoarder, as most times they do not want help in organizing and it is very hard for them to throw items away due to the hoarder mentality. We can only offer help and sometimes that help comes in just talking and being someone that loves them unconditionally.

    Keep exploring while you can. It sounds so cliche but its true. Move, travel, stay inquisitive so you have memories to look back on.

    I have been in places worst than this property, were the walls were black and it was not paint with floors you need to watch your step or your going through. This property would be a blast to pick, I would fill my vehicle since its all going to the landfill, save as much a possible.

    Mould is so horrible. Back in the day I found a book with lovely Victorian things glued in….. and mould everywhere. I couldn’t save it. At least you saved some things……

    What an awful mess! Can you tell us how hold the house is? Yes, I would clean that cup up and drink from it. Run it through the dishwasher or a sink full of water and Clorox and it'll be fine.

    Wow...what a mess of orphaned items! I have video sets, on hoarders, amazing what these folks pile up! The scrap book is quite a find. Yesterday, I went to a warehouse sale...found some cute pieces...a very nice hand carved fr-g...two old ceramic turtles (for my back yard) and a neat piece of Native American pottery. There was another piece I saw in the online photos...a vintage ceramic Christmas tree...but the price tag was too heavy at the present...if it does not sell before the Holiday, the price may come down...hope WAY down....I have been going to their estate sales for years...hope Guy will treat his old customer with a nice price! That old house was quite roomy!

      You found frogs even at a warehouse sale?? You have the magic touch! This home had elephants 🐘 Most missing a leg or two it seemed. Looks like there might be an estate sale or two that look interesting somewhat in my area, have to keep an eye out for when they add more photos to the listing. Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving!

      Excellent Thanksgiving, hope yours was as well! One of my late lady friends loved elephants, as to figurines...only collected those with the trunk turned up (good luck). Looks like those piles had the "m-m" smell of death...mice & mold! @@PaperandMoose

    An excavation site in several hundred years over all these demolished things. LOL!

      I had hoped that there was an old garbage pit somewhere in the yard! Apparently there had also been old cars filled with stuff from the previous owner, but those had been removed a few years prior.
