People are MAD about the dishwasher! 😂 So here's a question, keeping the dishwasher would have cost around $1400 in custom (granite for $1660) countertops. Would it have been worth the time and money, and what would my return on investment have been?
100% agree that it would have been worth the $1400 in custom countertops! Nice video though :)
Plywood or particle board. 2-4x8 sheets of 1/16 laminate. Can of contact cement and a roller boom any size top you want . For alot less than the 1400 or 1600 . It would have cost you about 600 bucks
@@rgtn2441 True, but that would have been a ton more work and nearly double what I paid. And then we also would not have gotten that rounded over edge which is a huge part of what I think differentiates the new laminate countertops from the old stuff.
Hopefully you were able to sell it. Someone probably tore that all out anyways. I’d be annoyed with no dishwasher but from your angle you don’t care it’s not your house anymore lol
I would have just painted the original cabinets. The dishwasher fit and new counters tops would make that sing.
I installed these same cabinets. The nice thing about this set is they have a lot of different sizes. I even made a kitchen island out of them with butcher block top. Overall was happy for the price.
I always find it easier as a DIY'r to put in a temp ledger board on the top (like you did) and install the top cabinets first since it hurts my back leaning over the lower cabinets. Also after the first time I put in cabinets I bought these really cool cabinet clamps from Amazon that apply normal clamping pressure but at the same time you can align the front of the cabinet face. Best $25 bucks I've spent. Great job!
I was quoted 9 months out for custom Lowe’s cabinets. This is my 3rd kitchen remodel so I’m not interested in buying $30k kitchen cabs. I’m going to do exactly your project with Diamond stock cabinets too.
That's awesome! I'm just happy we have a decent off-the-shelf option. Let me know how your project goes.
I like how you explain everything and take your time and make sure it is done right. I hope I can find someone this good to do my kitchen this year.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate the comment! I hope you find the perfect person to get the job done right!
My high school woodshop teacher instructed us on the soaped thread trick. The plywood insert between cabinets is a great idea. Lowes wants $199 for their cabinet design service , but videos like this are a much better value.
Thanks for the kind words! Not sure where I got the soap trick... it may have been Mr. Saba in my HS woodshop class who showed me that one.
I am a Lowe’s kitchen designer. We do all of our design appointments for free🤷♂️ custom cabinets are always more expensive, but better quality. We can even do a free design and quote of stock cabinets as well
but arent' these cabinets made of MDF? boards
Thanks man my wife and I just bought some of the diamond cabinets from lowes , and your videos will help me greatly , thanks again 👍
Glad I could help!
Excellent content! Well done. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Bill!
putting the plywood between the cabinet gaps was genius!
Thanks!
It was a huge waste of money. A small strip of wood would have worked just as well and a single sheet would have been enough for all the cabinets.
Maybe when OSB was like $75 a sheet! 🤣 Now it's back down to $20-$30 and I used less than half of a sheet on these cabinets. The reason behind the full cabinet depth piece is to support the cabinets front and back -- it's not as easy to know if the back is sitting solid on the floor or not. Bottom line, this step isn't required and smaller piece could work just fine if that's what you want do.
@@LongshotGarageI thought putting the ply wood between the cabinets was Genius, it’ll guarantee those cabinets want settle if for some reason they actually lifted a little during the install
A cheap solution to installing new cabinets. Great video. I splurged for drawers and pull-out shelves vs. dead-spaced cabinets along the bottom.
Yeah, those pull out shelves are the best! We did those in our house.
Drawer bases are the only ones that make sense. The pullouts are ok but not as good as drawers since you have an extra layer to get to items that way.
When I looked the only drawer bases I saw were 18" wide. Where did you find larger ones? ty

I got some beautiful countertops from lowes for around 6k with soft close doors. I couldn't be happier.
We're remodeling a house in Texas and looking to pick these up for a project. Seems like they came out pretty nice. Thank you for taking the time to capture each step.
I definitely think these are worth a look. Good luck with your remodel!
@@LongshotGarageCheap! They’re firewood!
A very informative video for a diy project.
Thank you!
this video was awesome, thanks for this
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for the video. A tidbit on the soap thing It may help the screw or nail to go in easy but it’ll come out easy also guaranteed! soaps not the best thing to use next time just run the screw or nail through your hair or scalp sounds weird, but that’s just enough to lubricate the nail or the screw old-school tip. Good luck!
Are you messin' with me? 😁 I say it all the time, there is more than one way to get any given job done. That being said, I've never heard of the hair oil trick. As for the soap, I have been doing that for decades and I can assure you the screws will not back out.
You have a new subscriber here. Well done!
Thank you! That's great to hear from a fellow DIYer.
I think I'll get these for my Laundry room and garage
I Love the way you soap the screw
Thanks!
Nice and Simple … Great Job ! … Thanks for posting & sharing with us, defiantly a money saver … Okay, that was (3) old school BMX T-Shirts I caught you wearing in the vid … Did you race back in the day?
Thanks for the kind words and noticing the shirts! 😂 I try to wear something interesting based on what I'm into in all the videos. Although I never raced, I was really into BMX BITD, and collect Old School BMX bikes now. You can see some of my bikes in my DIY Garage Photostudio video.
Home Depot has a moveable shelf insert to avoid installing a lazy-susan. Used for deep cabinets.
Can you show it to us?
@@tracypulver4201 I don't think I can post a video. I video taped the sales woman demonstrating it. It is in their custom kitchen set up.
Basically. Shelving for a long, waste of interior space cabinet has the shelving in two sections and on wheels. The first section pulls out (forward) from the cupboard (remaining attached). Then it slides to the left (or right depending upon your kitchen set up) in front of unopened cabinet doors. With that out of the way, the other portion of the cupboard shelving still inside the cupboard slides over to the spot the now moved aside shelving sat.
You do your whatever with the once buried shelving (load or unload your items) then slide it back into position (buried). You then move your displaced shelving to the right (or left depending...) then push it into the cupboard & close the door.
Sounds detailed, cumbersome etc. BUT IT ISN'T. It is three moves to access & three moves to store away!
Great video! 👍
Thank you!
Looks like a the perfect product to install in a rental property.
excellent video! Wish you would have shown more on the corner / lazy susan cabinet as I find that one most confusing.
Thanks! The lazy suzan was the hardest part and definitely had to be the starting point. Do you have any specific questions?
Great job on the install and review. Thank you!
Thank you!
Great job dude and nice video. Im curious though why you didnt opt to countersink the screw heads when screwing them together than filling with wood filler so you dont see the screw heads?
In my house I used drywall screws and actually did countersink them and made them flush. I personally would never go as far as filling in the screw heads. One trick I have heard of is to hide these screws behind the hinges.
Lowe’s used to sell 21” base and wall, 27” base and wall, and 33” base, sink base, wall (12”, 15”, and 30” in height). They stopped producing these due to low sales because they would sit in a distribution for too long. Also replacing those sizes would cause customers issues which was unfortunate. I used to be a K&B designer for them and remembered when they stopped selling them.
I really wanted the taller uppers, which were listed as an option, but no store had them in stock.
These cabinets are really nice 😊
Thanks, I was pretty happy with them.
The original cabinets were gorgeous. Curious to know what you did with those. Awesome job and very informative!
Thanks! I had to destroy the old cabs to get them out. They were poor quality and in pretty bad shape though, otherwise I would have tried to salvage them.
@@LongshotGarage Makes sense. Keep up the great work. I appreciate how in depth you go in your videos. Very helpful!
Pam here…the old cabinets had better bones..I would have refaced. Also, I was always taught to put up your uppers first.
Are you serious, old ones are hideous.
@@ashton8878 I love the detail on them. Different strokes for different folks I guess. 🤷🏻♀️
SO helpful!!!
Thanks!
great video, Got the same cabinets with the plywood construction.
Thanks! Plywood is definately better if you can swing it.
No dishwasher….ouch. You did a great job. I don’t think they look cheap. I like that they are new and clean. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, deleting the dishwasher is certainly not ideal. Worst part is we had a basically brand new one I was going to put back in there! With any luck the new homeowners want Custom Countertops and then it would be really easy for them just to swap out that end cabinet for the dishwasher of their choice.
You don't want a dishwasher, trust me. I'm taking them out of rental properties. They're too much of a headache. They don't clean well, cost too much and too many plumbing issues. Washing by hand get them much cleaner
@genew5758 That's exactly how I feel! Ultimately, I know it's a added value for resale if you have one. But I rarely use mine, and I wash the dishes before I put them in the dishwasher anyway. Isn't it really more of a dish sterilizer? 😂
As a retired kitchen designer, I would have introduced at least one drawer base cabinet. Other wise, nice installation. DIY is not for the faint of heart!
Thanks for the input! I totally agree. I was debating a drawer cabinet and don't exactly remember why I decided not to go with one.
I dig the Haro shirt! 80s freesstyler here
That is because you have excellent taste! 🤣 I am an old school bmx/freestyler from the 70s/80s and a Torker/Haro fanboy!
What flooring did you use that allowed you to put the cabinets right over them? Everyone says i have to but flooring last. Thanks. Nice video too. Only but as a buyer that would kill it for me is the lack of a dishwasher but that might just be me.
I used porcelain tile which is plenty solid. I do think doing the flooring after is better. You can always raise up the cabinets if you need by nailing 1/2 inch strips of plywood to the bottom which is about the typical thickness of tile and mortar. And the only reason you would need to consider this is to make sure the dishwasher isn't locked in under the countertop. And I think you are right, not having a dishwasher is a bad idea -- but I got lucky this time! 😁
You never want to put the base cabinets in before the flooring, if you're putting a dishwasher in. If you do, the countertop has to be removed, to replace the dishwasher. Now, removing a laminant countertop isn't an impossible task. But, if you have a Granite, Solid Surface or Quartz countertop, it's a huge problem.
I always have flooring all the way to the wall if possible, and cabinets on top of flooring. That way, if you decide to make changes, there is matching floor underneath. You don't screw cabinets to the floor, so there's no reason that it should be messed up under the cabinets if installers are careful.
I liked the old ones tbh, they had nice texture and detail.
Honestly we wanted to keep them, but they were so rough and such poor quality. It would have literally been more work to clean them up. Also, we were concerned that a large portion of buyers would not like them. But the same thing is going to be said about Shaker cabinets in at some point the future! 🤣
Yeah I saved the old cabinets in my house and have found out how much work refinishing can be so I don’t blame you. I’ve just come to despise shaker cabinets as they are everywhere nowadays. In any case you did nice work!
they look good now but as i've seen some, the vinyl bubbles, they are termite smorgasboards, they chip.peel and crack, door hinges don't hold up. I know you said this was just for a fast flip, glad i didn't buy it! RTA cabinets are 3/4 inch plywood construction with maple doors and soft close, usually drawers are all dove tail and they are very close to what these cost, albeit, ytou have to assemble them which is actually pretty darn easy with basic tools.Rta cabinets will last decades where the lowes line might last a year if your lucky. Thanks for the video, great option if you want to cheap out on a flip
Agree 100% on the RTA cabs.
Strong work installing the cabinets! I do think you have 2 issues with this kitchen, those being no dishwasher-I mean really? and secondly, you could've used another electrical outlet or two-you can never have enough electrical outlets in the kitchen!
Thanks! In this small kitchen I really didn't think about an extra outlet, but you're right, more outlets are always better! In this case I already had an electrician do some work to the wiring and I wasn't going to mess with it for liability reasons as we were selling the house. Yeah, like I said, the dishwasher was going to be a controversial topic for sure! Ultimately, in this case, I gambled and I won. The house sold quickly with no comments on the lack of a dishwasher. As I installed this kitchen it was going through the my head that the new owner may very well rip it all out.
Was the 1/2" filler enough space for your full overlay door to open properly?
Absolutely. With the hidden hinges the doors open with little to no overhang of the cabinet face frame edge (basically flush wit the edge of the cabinet).
I bought my house 7 years ago. I have these cabinets. The finish is peeling and tearing. I can’t afford new cabinets - so I’ll try peeling them, sanding and hopefully painting. BTW- the wood is pressed wood not solid. Uhg.
My house also has these horrible cabinets. I just want to cry every time I'm in the kitchen.
Good info to know. The price with Lowe's coupons and like the credit card discount you mentioned can be lower. May I know what they are made of? Particle board or plywood? Are they made in the USA? Thanks.
They are made of particle board and I feel it was fairly thin material for the boxes, the face frames and doors felt more substantial. They were relatively lightweight while still feeling solid. I certainly couldn't complain for the price. I could not find info on where they are made, but I doubt in the USA as they would plaster that everywhere! 😂
Good point Thanks for the info. I'm wondering if Lowe's has plywood versions.
@@oldporkchops
No ..stock is only particle board, no cushion or soft close and drawers are stapled and glued.
@@LongshotGarage
Boxes are 1/2" particle board. Face frames are 3/4" thick solid wood or MDF. Doors are True Color construction i.e. like the old Thermofoil but the parts are individually wrapped so the inside door edges are square shaker look.
@@johnweerasinghe4139 Thank you for the info.
what about built in fridge cabinetry, compadre? is tthere an enexpensive option for that?
I don't think so, I just went and double-checked and didn't see any type of refrigerator panel. Of course they do have a tall pantry cabinet you could put on the side of your fridge and a cabinet over the top, if you have room, for a little more built-in look.
@@LongshotGarage we have Rona here in canada and i was just there visiting they're selling these pre made cabinetries under EKLIPSE
and they ARE S h I T they're so bad it's not even funny lol
100% would have spent the money for the dish washer customization, other than that looks pretty good for out of the box cabinets.
How much would it have been for them to install that? We got granite countertops which we will be keeping. Our kitchen is TINY TINY TINY. Condo kitchen. What you got there would probably suffice.
Not sure what it would ave cost to install the laminiate, but I don't think it would be too much. A pro could whip this out pretty quick.
The cabinet screws . What size did you go with?
That would have been a great thing to put in the video! 🤣 It's beens so long I don't remember, but they were actual cabinet srews (not drywall screws) and I woud say 1.5" to 2" long. You figure the cabinet back and drywall take up about an inch total. There "shouldn't" be any wires or plumbing behind them, but you have to be careful when using longer screws.
I'm confused on your reasoning for ditching the dishwasher 🤷♂️
The house I bought didn't have a spot for a dishwasher. My stove was next to my sink, so I moved my stove, extended my laminate countertop, and installed a dishwasher. It was pretty simple, and you can get hardware to attach a laminate countertop to another laminate countertop at Menards.
I knew this would be a polarizing choice! 😁 Bottom line was time and money. Everything you listed were valid options, and I could have made it happen. I gambled and got lucky that it worked out this time. The house sold fast for full price with no complaints.
I’m a single mom and installed upper and lower cabinets 3x in my life❤ not complicated I think you did a good job but I think you could have fixed some of the problems with kitchen functionality with a little more thought now someone has to come in and either have no dishwasher or fix it properly plus instead of getting a proper corner upper cabinet there is no cabinets on other wall near or around stove as a buyer that’s 2x’s against this kitchen not to mention the flow of where the refrigerator is makes 3 you would have been better off striping kitchen like you did cleaning it up like you did and saying to the new buyer hears $3000 dollars towards your new kitchen! Kitchens sell houses if they are done right you could have put the fridge on the wall where the stove was to go with tiny cabinet above put the stove and a range hood or microwave range hood where the sink was supposed to be put a small island across from the stove with sink and dishwasher and put pantry cabinet where the refrigerator was now you have good flow and functionality and a $20000 to $30000 increase for aprox max $5000 vs you may or may not get your $2k back and the house would sell a lot quicker❤❤❤❤❤
You have some interesting points, and that's how projects like this go, there are different ways to get the job done. Ultimately, some of the things you said about moving the kitchen around and adding extra cabinets were way out of the price and scope of this project. You kind of have to know the whole story... It was a pretty basic house in a low income area. They're simply wasn't going to be a ton more money thrown it a three bedroom, one bathroom house because the kitchen was slightly better. A lot of people have suggested I should have kept the old cabinets and believe me, we thought about that. Anyone who would have seen them in person would have agreed that ripping them out and burning them was the only choice! They were old, they were cheap and they were trashed not to mention pretty disgusting inside from a lifetime of family meals. You also have to consider like I did, the new homeowner may very well have ripped out everything I installed. So was it a good idea to spend a ton of time and money that I was most likely not going to see a return on? The bottom line is that I didn't think so. In the end the house sold quickly for full price. I made a few educated guesses and this time they paid off. 😁
Are this made out of the same material as the diamond NOW Denver ? The DIAMOND cabinets are twice expensive
I'm not 100% sure, but I do think the company offers higher end, custom order cabinets. The Diamond Now cabinets are the more affordable off-the-shelf option.
Awesome
Thanks!
Mmmm kinda makes more sense to install wall cabinets first then the floor ones... or am I wrong??
I say it all the time, there's more than one way to get any job done. And that really is a debate, which comes first? Like I said in the video... I wasn't 100% sure of the upper cabinet spacing without having a lower cabinets installed. However, it's much easier to install the upper cabinets first. I guess as long as you can get it done, it doesn't really matter! 😁
If you don't want cheap wood cracking, don't crank down fasteners with an impact driver.
This kind of job is exactly what combi-drills are designed for.
I had no problems with cracking the wood with the impact, the reason I soaped the screws it's because I don't want to split the wood due to resistance and friction, which could happen with any tool. You make a good point though. Anyone using an impact, or really any power tool, kind of has to know how to use it. You can't just crank down on the screw, you have to work the trigger just right to drive it in gently.
How about using cabinet grade plywood for the doors and stain it.
That's actually a great idea. I myself would have painted them though. Sadly, the frames were pretty rough in this case.
@@LongshotGarage it actually looks nice when stained. Kinda rustic
For sure, but these frames were in awful shape and had been painted numerous times. It would have been way more work to strip and stain.
Why does no one put handles on? Is it because it’s expensive? I’m in an elderly apartment building and it’s hard to open the drawers because it has no pulls on them
I didn't because I wanted the new homeowner to choose the type and color of drawer pulls/handles they wanted.
This might be unorthodox but I find it easier to install the wall cabs first
Not at all, it kind of sounds like the right way to do it. And I have seen installers do the uppers first as well. Really, whatever works for you is best. Like I said in the video, for me in this case I wanted to make sure the upper cabinets aligned perfectly with the lower cabinets. That round lazy Susan made the job difficult so I just installed the uppers after.
Well, I got Home Depot cabinet right off the shelf because I didn't want to wait for long delivery. 1 year later, all the edges peel off. Do yourself a favor and don't buy trash.
Those cabinet screws are great, but not for the face frames. There I'd use stainless trim head screws.
I specifically used cabinet screws so I wouldn't get flamed for using drywall screws! 🤣
Most cabinets installers put the upper cabinets in first, because it's easier to reach the cabinets.
True. In this case I installed the lower cabinets first to make sure everything lined up perfectly. Mostly this was due to the Lazy Suzan having no square frame to get measurements from.
We had the orange counter tops lol
We had orange too, on really dark wood cabinets. Good times!
My Mom had her house renovated about 8 years ago, back then I hadn’t built anything with my own tools and it wasn’t often. And these cabinets were a bit more custom from Home Depot, she picked the style and veneer, color, etc. They’ve been ok but that’s it! She got a lot of compliments for them but quickly I realized she needed more custom storage solutions and some of the finishes weren’t pro looking at all and it cost more than off the shelf. The hardware has worked great but the material is crap, the veneer is crap and is showing signs of ware already and I really wish I had built them instead! Not everyone can do that or spend extra on custom anything so that’s totally fair but I’d still rather do the labor, invest time and money into higher quality materials such as real plywood and make the frame and doors out of solid hardwood. But if I were to do that I’d want to plan and execute something well thought out and timeless. I’d want something that looks great for the next century without fads ruining the look and with function as the highest priority over anything else. I don’t know I just feel strongly for myself and family I’d want to build something rather than throw money at ikea or Lowe’s, etc. most probably won’t agree and that’s fine. A rental property absolutely don’t waste money on expensive or long lasting as you can’t depend on a kitchen outlasting numerous tenants. If you’re in your first home and or can’t build for various reason totally understandable
Why don't you use the proper screws for connecting the cabinets together? GRK makes screws specifically for this and the small screw head will screw all the way into the cabinet making them nearly invisible if you use the white screws on a white cabinet.
For this project the reason was time and I couldn't find them locally.
He should just use any finishing trim head screws, even if brass or any color. Not sure how any store would NOT have them.
Uppers are always first . The 1/2 ply in between cabs are unnecessary. And drywall screws are acceptable just use a finish washer . Or use a screw cap strip . Should have added the dishwasher. There are countertop options you could have used . The post form ctops are trash anyway
There's no rule that says uppers must come first, but it is a good idea. The OBS between the cabinets is unnecessary. However, it's cheap insurance, especially if your cabinets are on uneven flooring and only supported by a few shims and screws. I love drywall screws and my personal cabs have been hanging on them for upwards of 20 years. I do like the cabinet screws though. Yup, lots of controversy on the dishwasher. It's true, having one is better. But, I thought things through, gambled and won in this particular case -- the house sold fast for full price with no complaints. There are always compromises to be made with projects like these and each of us has to choose what works best in our situation.
He should have just painted the cabinets, put on new handles and pulls and new counter tops. Much faster, cheaper and easier
Not in this case, the cabinets were awful inside and out and falling apart. Also take a look at the doors themselves, they were very intricate it would have taken forever to sand those. Painting what was there would have actually been way more work.
Not everyone wants to do that kind of labor intensive work.
@ashton8878 what? That would be much easier than what he did. Especially if you are just selling the house any way.
Are you worried that not having a dishwasher is going to slow the sale of that house?
I wasn't too worried about it and no one complained about it. The house is long gone at this point. It sold within a few weeks of listing.
I’m no expert, but is it ok to install cabinets over a floating floor?
I don't think so -- because then it couldn't float. This was a porcelain tile floor that was adhered to the concrete below so I was comfortable putting the cabs on top.
@@LongshotGarage Aah, thanks for clearing that up
@@juanbarajas5376Yes it's fine. My builder did it and I have no issues. I also added a few cabinets myself in other rooms on a floating floor. I don't think it "moves" as much as people make it seem lol.
I too would NOT have eliminated the dishwasher. As a matter of fact properties that I own that don't have a dishwasher I always will install one during a remodel. Women appreciate dishwashers more rhan men. I too have purchased countertop at Lowes and have also ordered countertop to size, which I just did yesterday. I find it to be a little more than double the cost, in otherwords $350 in store countertop turns out to be $750 special order. Looking at your project I highly doubt laminate countertop would be $1400.
Good to know on the laminate pricing for custom orders. I was curious about that but didn't even look considering my time constraints. I wasn't clear above, I would have went with the granite countertops I got quoted for $1660 which is where I came up with the $1400 difference/guesstimate.
Keep in mind the damaged components are all replaceable where other cabinets you would have to replace the entire cabinet.
I have these cabinets i love them. You put the uppers to high
I thought they were pretty decent for the price and was pretty happy with the purchase. I mounted the uppers 20-inches above the countertop. 18-inches is standard but you can go 20- to 22-inches -- it really just depends on what the end user wants.
@LongshotGarage I guess the ceiling is not 8' that's why they looked high. Lol
There is NO WAY I would buy a house without a dishwasher
Should have shifted the cabinets off the wall 1 1/2 of the corner. With a handle or knob on that upper your door probably won’t open at all 90
You make a good point and that's true. In this case I don't mind because that cabinet is over the L-shaped countertop below. The problem with Shifting the cabinets over an inch and a half is then making them a line up with the cabinets below. Maybe with custom cabinets you could have done that, but with these there weren't as many size choices.
Easy peasy but you could have put a corner cabinet up top. Otherwise great video for beginners.
True. A corner cabinet was part of the discussion as was wrapping the cabinets around the corner and running them over the oven. Time and budget constraints kept this one simple.
Could you just use a really long screw in the existing hinge holes to bind the cabinets together? You'd have to take the hinge off the door and leave it on the cabinet. It'd be fewer visible screws, and less chance of splitting the wood.
I kinda liked the brown ones lol Bit busy, but more character than the sterile white ones.
I despise how homes are treated as commodities, for profit. At least I hope you didn't/don't end up selling it to corpo-rats.
The spec home I just bought is full of 'contractor grade' or worse junk, including the cabinets. Huge gaps between them, no lazy susan or anything in the corners so a ton of wasted space; but they have gorgeous marble countertop slapped on top. It's so weird what they think sells. I got it because it's what I could afford without moving 1000+ miles away, and not 40+ years old.
One of the tricks I've seen for joining the cabinets is to remove the hinge and put the screws behind the hinges. It's more work but yes, there are two less screws to look at.
A smarter solution would have been to keep cabinets and order new doors.
Normally I would agree with you, but not in this case. The frames were trashed, filthy and really needed to be torn out.
It’s cheap because they are constructed out of particle board. I know you’re selling the house but I would never install particle board anything anywhere. Only use for is it underlayment for floors getting carpet
I hate particle board too. Sadly, I think most cabinets are made with particle board. I find very few made with plywood and then of course the prices are always much higher.
The ones at the beginning were classic, probably better made too.
They really weren't. They were the cheapest pressed wood doors on a built-in-place frame that was falling apart.
@@LongshotGarage OK. I have seen some classics that were like that made from sold wood. My guess would be that you would have kept them as f that were the case. Still, good job.
5/8” particle board base cabinets sometimes fall apart if you look at them wrong
I would have wanted the upper cabinet in the corner to be like the bottom cabinet below, I have wasted spaces that cannot be used
I can appreciate that. In this case I thought the corner cabinet was kinda ugly. Granted it would have been more space, and made adding cabinets over the stove easier... Decisions, Decisions! 😁
Like the TShirt collection! #80sBMX #Rad
That's because you have excellent taste! What do you shoot? I'm a photographer too and shoot mostly cars/motorcycles and portraits (and the occasional old school BMX bike).
I probably would have just painted the old ones white and called it a day. Especially if moving.
We considered that, but they were such poor quality and in such bad shape that it would have been way more work.
Nice flip flops 😆
Thank you! 🤣
❤ wow never seen half-inch OSB between cabinet in my life. I got my master in carpentry in two years and custom design woodwork man don’t make video like this. You’re going to screw me up a lot of Carpenter out there.
I've never seen it either. It just hit me one day as I was wanting to make sure my cabinets were rock solid and strong enough to hold up any countertop.
These cabinets don't last long. We bought a house almost 100 yrs old and we thought the cabinets were from the 1980s when really they were put up in 2012. We’re debating on just painting them but also the hinges and alignment is raggedy.
Good production re the install BUT... a couple of disagreements: 1. Lowes design service is FREE and can be compared to several different cabinet lines cost when they finish; 2. Losing the dishwasher was a poor choice imo because you also will then lose 24"+ of counter space with dishes all piled up. 3. One cabinet should have been a 24" drawer base. 4. Pushing the uppers up an extra 2" (20" height on the counter) also makes the uppers too high for easy reaching. Diamond Now are the lowest cabinet choice from Lowes, I believe. Hope they last. In my experience if you skimp on a rental you will be replacing items all the time. They just don;t last! Thanks.
Don't sugar coat it, tell me how you really feel! 😁 J/K, thank you for the well thought out reply. You make some great points. Ultimately there is more than one way to get any job done and we all have to make the choices that work best for us. For me and my situation this was the cheapest and fastest way to get the job done so we could sell the house. I kept things simple figuring the new owner may just rip it all out! If not, they have a solid starting point to use as-is or modify to suit their needs.
I hit the 500 click like 😂🎉
That's awesome, thanks!
You should have just refaced the old cabinets, they looked better, were better quality, and no dishwasher is a dealbreaker.
I promise you they were not better quality and definitely would have cost more time and money to make usable again. As for the dishwasher... yup, lots of people are in your camp on that.
All that work and you took out an existing dishwasher??
Yup. It would have cost a lot more time and money to keep it.
You know, some cheap tool bags go a long way. Especially when working by yourself.
True. I bought a tool belt before this project got started but had a hard time getting used to it. I am using it now an likeing it more and more.
Might want to turn down the music. It's hard to hear what your saying over the music.
Thanks for the input, I will work on that.
NO DISHWASHER?????
Nope... I'm a rebel! 🤣
Wtf you got rid of the dishwasher? Terrible going back in time
I knew a bunch of people wouldn't approve.
I mean they could get a counter top dishwasher but why when there was already one there its just a weird choice.
After reading the reviews of these cabinets, we're going in another direction. These are so cheaply made
It's true, I saw some horrible reviews and many had pictures to back them up. That's wasn't the case for me but I did have a few issues, luckily Lowe's took care of me on all of them. Good luck with whatever you choose!
for a resale they seem perfect.
Right, the reviews scared me into getting the Valleywood cabinetry instead and I love them!!!
I have these cabinets and they are great for a quick, cheap remodel. The only one that sucks is the lazy Susan. Mine broke and I had to do some repair on it.
@@mattp4079, yeah. Screw the buyer. Nice philosophy to live by.
Renovating to sell a house with no dishwasher? Seems half assed if you ask me.
The house didn't originally have a dishwasher, so consider it more of a restoration. 🤣 Seriously though, yes, a dishwasher would have been better. But it was a starter home that will most likely get completely renovated anyway so it worked out in this case.
Well I'm still looking for the comment, where someone asked you!!!
@@bigdaddystovepipe yet here you are
Can't hear what's being said because of the obnoxious music
Thanks for the input! Do me a favor and watch the rest of the video, the only place there is music over me speaking is a few seconds of the intro. The rest is just me talking (which you may find equally obnoxious).
What's wrong with your original cabinets? They look like books.
They were just in really rough shape and dirty, It would have been more work to try and clean them up than just installing new cabinets. We also felt that although a handful of people would have loved them, most people would have hated them.
Okay.
How many times can one person promote a "PATREON CHANNEL" in a video?
Huh? Did you comment on the right video? I don't even have a Patreon.
As a custom cabinet maker, you can have custom cabinets made for less than what the design consultants will charge you for their high-end cabinets at Lowe’s
Those Diamond cabinets are absolute junk!!!!!!
It cost more to have them installed than what they cost, and they will start to break down immediately
They look exactly what you paid for them cheap! Wouldn’t put them in my garage 👎🏻🤣
I understand, I wouldn't put them in my garage either. But then I am super picky about my garage! 🤣 Check out the Longshot Garage Addition Build Series! That being said, I still think these are worth the price for affordable, readily available cabinets.
Tip for next video. Record the entire renovation, then go back and do voice over. Too long this way and I wont be sticking around to hear a sermon.
Head over and check out my lintel video. That's exactly how I did that one. Let me know if it meets with your approval!
You did great on install but those look awful and cheap. Look like cheap apartment cabinets almost . I like the look of the old minus a good clean and paint.
It was way less work to install these than it would have been to re-do the old ones--they were beat!
A LAZY-SUSAN bottom corner cabinet is a waste of effort & space.
The bottom corner cabinet is where all the big pots & pans should go, NOT a Lazy Susan.
Now a Lazy Susan top cabinet in the corner “Works” because everything is at EYE-level & it’s something that you’re going to use a lot unlike the bottom corner cabinet where nobody’s gonna bend over constantly to go through & inventory what’s on the Lazy Susan as for selections.
I don't know, that's a tough one. I see your point, but every corner cabinet I have ever had came with a small door. I don't see how you could fit the large pots and pans in there, not to mention getting them from back in the corner would require practically laying down on the ground. I pretty much think this is why lazy suzans have gotten so popular... no one wants to dig back in that corner. Granted, if space is your main goal and that system works for you, it makes sense. This is the beauty of kitchen cabinets, you can design them how they work best for you!
I use the lazy susan for all my pots and pans and some appliances. It works great. Not exactly taxing to turn it to where you need.
Lowe's is much too expensive. Home Depot is MUCH better on prices!
I seem to remember that Home Depot was a little cheaper, but the Lowe's quality was far better. The white Shaker cabinets from Home Depot seemed like garage cabinets to me. The good news is there's plenty of choices. And don't forget Ikea, their kitchen cabinets are supposed to be pretty nice quality.
@@LongshotGarage ok. I'll take a look. Thanks
One thing that is guaranteed is people in UA-cam comments always get mad over the dumbest crap, lol. A dishwasher is a luxury item that the buyer can furnish on their own dime. In your situation the juice just wasn't worth the squeeze, and if commentors don't like it they can renovate their own kitchens, and put whatever they like in it.
It looks like you left the uppers off the right 90 degree cabs. That's really good in my opinion. The one thing I despise about my kitchen cabs is there is no above-cab room for a coffee maker, or small, countertop appliances. That means having to slide the coffee maker completely out from under the top cabs because they leave no room for pouring the water. In my instance we have to have the coffee maker on the breakfast bar because there's just nowhere to put it on the countertops.
My kitchen is a galley style, and I absolutely hate it. There's no room for 2 people, which causes knife battles in the kitchen while my wife, and I are trying to make food, lol. It's even more compounded because our fridge is one of those massive French door units. I think it's 36 inches, and the space it's in is literally 361/4 inches. The original purchaser, (it came with the house) didn't measure the space before he bought it, had to cut part of the entryway trim off the wall, and move the light switch from the inside wall to the hallway.
You know you're doing good on the interwebs when the negative comments start flying! 🤣 As I installed these cabinets, and the laminate countertops, I was always aware that the buyer might immediately rip it all out and install what they want. Also, it would have been easy for the buyer to pull just the laminate counters, ad a dishwasher, and then install the countertops they wanted. I also left the paperwork in the cabs so the new owner knew what cabinets to buy if the wanted to expand. I have always avoided galley kitchens, so I feel your pain. Thanks for watching and commenting!
