- As coronavirus presses on, celebrities all over the world have begun to adapt to creating fashion imagery in an isolated world. BTS wears Prada but doesn't "Stay Gold", Beyoncé gives us a sneak peek of her upcoming visual album "Black is King" with a cheetah look, Chloe x Halle shed light on 4 budding young fashion brands, and Blackpink utilize style as a storytelling mechanism in their "How You Like That" music video. Kim Kardashian & Kanye West as well as their children also stepped out in Mowalola, the London based designer, which helped to hint at the fact that Mowalola would go on to be the design director of Kanye's Yeezy and Gap collaboration.

BTS stylists dress them differently when they do anything internationally, its most obvious when you compare their western red carpet looks c to their Korean award show looks. I'm not sure why exactly they feel the need to tone them down or make them seem more "serious" when they come to the west but yeah that's something fans have noticed for sure. I agree the stay gold video looks were boring but it was their Japanese release, and those usually aren't as interesting visually as their main comebacks. I'd love to see you talk about their other video looks like in idol, fake love, or their love yourself: answer concept photos.
also it was shot entirely in quarantine due to the show, of which was going to be the theme song for, being cancelled.
i think maybe their "international style" is more toned down to try and make them seem more serious, since they are often disciminated against bc they embrace more feminine and out-there styles than we are used to from western (male) celebrities...

Hajnal Miklos Hajnal Miklos that’s definitely true and really sad. I just hate that they feel the need to do that to avoid criticism when fashion is all about having fun and taking risks. There are some western male celebrities like Harry styles , Jaden Smith, Ashton sanders, Ezra Miller, etc. who still dress in “feminine” ways and are praised for it so idk I wish one day they at least try it out. but I guess they aren’t comfortable going there yet and that’s valid too.
I saw you being shoked by the fact that BTS fans liked your criticism and felt relieved by your language. And honestly yes, as a fan i am thankful for every journalist or youtuber giving them fair reviews. American and british men get praised for being feminine and people shout about them breaking gender barriers, while kpop stars are called gays, girls in a demeaning way or whitewashed and ladyboys (both homophobic and racist) and its sooooo normalised. I hope its not the reason they are toning down recently.

We sick of it just recently in an event a lady literally was like "their wearing make up? Why they are wearing make up?" While bts was literally on front of her no to mention international media straight up being racist and homophobic towards them and to this day no apologies is released. So genuine critism like dis and doesn't use bts name is such a gem for armys
I've seen ARMYS(BTS stans) talk about the vogue Japan cover and how their good looks really saved this cover because other than that, it was pretty lazy. Especially how the magazine didn't really put any effort into the shoot because this is BTS, where anything they touch, it sells out. Their brand power is absolutely PHENOMENAL but I feel like because of this, brands dont really that much effort to bring out each member's individual style, especially internationally.
tbh i agree with what you said about bts. they tone themselves down a lot when they do stuff internationally such as interviews or shoots. I feel like they, and their company, have to do that because they won't be respected by western media/artists otherwise. which is really sad because some of their best looks include sparkly see-through blouses, skirts, blazers with feathers and some of the best jewlery. the concept pictures for their albums and tour performance outfits are usually something to make your jaw drop. not to mention the clothes they wear for korean performances. i feel like if they would wear that type of stuff in the west the media would be making articles about it for months. u should react to their "love yourself: the tour" outfits if you wanna see what they can pull off.

Chloe x Halle and Beyoncé share a stylist and I feel like she’s more experimental with shapes on Halle while playing into Chloe and Bey’s sex appeal a little more which in turn makes them (Chloe & Bey) a little predictable and it’s somewhat a signature for Bey as she’s been around a lot longer to be known for the bodycon style. Chloe will find her niche eventually as well.
Chloe x Halle are still young, as they grow, if it is in their intrest, I believe they may be able to become more experimental.
J M yeah, I agree. With Beyoncé, she is (whether people like it or not) an icon, and icons always have things that they are physically known for is the bodycon outfits and the big blonde hair. Even if they grow out of it, it’s still sorta something that is signature to them.
With Chloe and Halle they are new and young and bright, so I think (like you stated) they should experiment. But I do appreciate the fact that they are working with younger, smaller brands. And their style is a lot more creative compared to the rest of the artists in the mainstream. So I applaud them for that

Saaame man. I like Luke a lot and I knew he definitely wasn't going to be xenophobic but I was still scared with the title. I agree that recently BTS stylist is doing a lack luster job but the way some people talk about them has just scarred me.
Agreed. BTS isn't a western boy band, and you cant use the same frame of reference to interpret their music, style, and presentation...but their current stylist is playing it safe and being boring.
Also, Luke is my favorite because of how he talks about fashion being for everybody. The only PEOPLE he drags are designers that he thinks have done a bad job.

I think designers give Chloe the less attractive dress because they rely on her body to pull it off. People always compare them for this, which is STUPID, and I think their stylists and designers are slacking on Chloe as a result.
But I do think her curvier body actually does pull off the clothes and disagree, some of her looks are better like in Do It video.

And I honestly think they both looked amazing in the do it video with most outfits, but Halle in that white jacket thing stole all the eyes beside her sister. Absolutely agree! Also I think that Halle's body type is more stereotypically "fashion", very thin with boobs and long small legs. She seems to get the more artsy pieces, where Chloe wears the more body -con, "hot" outfits. They are both absolutely stunning, but im hoping they will switch it up more and give Chloe a super couture look and Halle something more overtly sexy. But I think the fact that Halle is younger and about to become a Disney Princess probably also factors in.

I'm sad you didn't talk about Blackpink's modernised hanboks (traditional korean dress). It was such an interesting and unique idea. The designer spoke about it and said she wanted to introduce more hanbok style into modern fashion. I'd love to hear your take on that!

I hate whoever turned traditional Korean hanbok into sexy clothing where I can see the girls’ abdomens and their shorts are almost up to their butts. People would totally criticize it if it’s not BP. It’s bad role model for little girls. It’s not teaching them self confidence or boost their self esteem. I hope they don’t starve themselves to look like BP. That’s unrealistic, nobody looks like them in real life.

The visuals for the Stay gold video followed a really sad story line that was created over the years by BTS through other videos. There's a whole comic book so it's been in the works for a long time. The reason why it's so minimalistic is that part of the video was a nod to their previous music video called spring day which is based on the sewol tragedy ( the sinking a ship that cost many people their lives due to the inaction of the Korean government) and saying the survivors will meet the dead in heaven one day. That's kinda why they all in basic light colours and all sad. I don't think this is the video for them to be fashionable. J-hope wears more fashionable things on his live streams when making fans friendship bracelets... bruh Africa needs a damn vogue the traditional print and diversity in clothing is stunning.

I actually prefer a lot of BTS’s earlier looks. They were alway at least interesting, and fun. Give me a bandana ensemble, leather harness, or loud multi-color suits any day. These days they do look more conservative, and casual. I figure that they are going for a more mature look. At least they always look beautiful no matter what they wear.
I think they wanted to match the seriousness of the last album. They're having a comeback in late august, and members are styling themselves, kinda looking forward to what they come up with|
I think it also had to do with the concept themselves (bst being damien inspired & hyyh & tear were darker concepts) it wasnt as in your face personal as mots eras so i dont think they felt the need to do smth crazy but idk

As a Czech, the adjective "Czechoslovak" somehow sounds alright in our language (and probably in Slovak too) but hearing it in English it just sounds wrong - it promotes the idea like it's still the name of the country, which many people on the outside still think to be true.

So, I´m from Slovakia and the thing about Vogue Czechoslovakia is that it even exists. We are usually considered to be part of Eastern Europe, which is generally the "backward" part of Europe, so the fact that Vogue exists here is great and gives the creators from our countries to show themselves in the world light. I recommend looking at the shoot with a Slovak president, a woman, for whom we adore this magazine. Have a nice day, love your videos. I would love to see some vids about Zendaya, Beyonce etc... About BTS this is a Japanese release it’s not like an official comeback which is also why it’s so toned down. You must’ve noticed the budget for the MV is not as big as for their «normal» comebacks.

I don't really think it's about budget. I mean they have much more interesting outfits just for the airport so I'm sure if they wanted to they could've brought something new and fun, but BTS always seems to tone down their fashion presence when promoting abroad idk why :(

hi hello annyeong there is always a risk to giving criticism when it’s of a cherished group that has many fans. Of course a huge group like BTS would have shooters for them to an extreme. But one thing I love about Army is our ability to give such constructive feedback and have great conversations as well.

Good that you called out the lack of Vogues in African countries, however you didn’t have to do it by disrespecting Slavic countries like the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Slavic people are almost always looked down upon and discriminated in Western Europe, so it is not like we are equal to the privileged, “western” people.
yeah he didn't have to say it like that, it was kind of rude. He's kind of ignorant to some European countries and cultures, he has that American mindset where he thinks everyone who's white is automatically privileged. I'm not Slavic but I know that Slavic cultures rarely get represented anywhere and get looked down upon.

@@aleksandra6029 Yeah I think in Europe we see ethnicity and rather nationality than race. But of course there's racism everywhere and it's awful. I'm Swedish myself and I can say that I've never looked down on Slavic countries, I'm actually quite interested in the cultures. Europe has so much history with wars between the countries and regions that most Americans will never truly get, the cultures are so deep-rooted but also the judgement for others.
The way he talked about slavic countries and Vogue cs (which is working so hard and doing some great work) was honestly so offensive.

Racism has never been part of Slavic culture, moreover, there aren't any Slavic countries that had systematic racism and black slavery throughout their history (there have been only few cases in Russian Empire during Russian-Turkish wars, when some of black or arab war prisoners have been brought to Russian aristocrats as "prize". Even then, they weren't such slaves as black people in America were, they usually became a part of royal escort. something that's become rlly popular recently in Kpop mv fashion has been summery/floral dresses paired with cowboy-ish boots, which combined sort of gives off a modern hippie kind of vibe (it reminds me of like 'western' coachella outfits but more elegant and upscale). a lot of recent girl group videos have included it like HYLT, Twice's More & More, Apink's Dumhdurum, and Oh My Girl's Nonstop, which all have moments worth checking out.

Yeah I wish he would look at their actual personal styles instead of what stylist have chosen for them on a red carpet or photoshoots. Stage outfits are usually more interesting to me though. I also love Hoseok's and Jungkook's personal styles and I also find Taehyung's style interesting.

luke, i love your videos! just wanted to let you know that for things like magazine shoots and red carpets the boys don’t actually style themselves, which is why these looks end up being a bit more “toned down” and all the same brand. all 7 boys each have their own immaculate individual style, so I would really love if you could rate their airport fashion for example. please don’t write them off!
Luke I think if you're gonna look at BTS fashion in MVs, i think stay gold wasn't the best intro to doing that because it's considered more simple than other MV fashion they have, like "Fire", "ON", and dozens of others. Stay Gold was supposed to have a more down to earth vibe than the others
