  • Two different mazurkas are used for the male variation in Les Sylphides/Chopiniana - the "Russian" and the "Western" one. Fokine employed both during his lifetime. Because of the tempo, it's a little devil of a variation. It does not call for modern bravura but for sustained ballon, soft landings, full phrasing, general airiness and the ability to transform the technical ingredients into metaphors for a romantic reverie.
    The present montage contains only the "Russian" variation (mazurka in C major, Op. 33, No. 3). What happened to the variation in last half of the 20th century? The short answer is that the tempo got slower and slower, the allegro grander and grander, the legs longer and longer, and the black top shorter and shorter (I hope they'll stop the trend before the torso vanishes completely ;) Details and nuance were discarded in favor of large sweeping gestures, and it seems the dancers aren't able to land in arabesque anymore... It was a gradual process and by no means a straightforward one (at least not in the first decades), but after the mid 80's it was a one-way street.
    All Kirov/Mariinsky productions, with two exceptions: 1962 and 1984 are mixed productions (Western/Russian). The male variation is Russian.
    All (ex-)Kirov/Mariinsky dancers, with one exception. I couldn't find a Kirov rec from the 70's and included a Bolshoi dancer instead.

    From vVasiliev to Zaklinsky they all did single cabrioles which I think is much nicer than double. More soaring and manly. Have they gone back to doubles in recent years? I have to say I like Misha a lot!

    Los 4 primeros entendían con perfección lo que era el romanticismo en la danza-.

      +Navarre Brixen As far as I am concerned the first half is indeed the top division, with the fourth dancer leading the pack by far.

      I agree completely. Misha! The Fokine style seems quite elusive. Many of the others seem off their center, not finishing their turns. This is a fascinating comparison. There's much to observe and learn. Thank you.

    RIP Sergei Vikharev... lovely dancer, and I have great respect for his efforts in restaging classic ballets. He didn't have the technique of Misha, but he really understood the romantic feeling and style of the variation.
    I love Vladimir Vasiliev but he is sooo wrong for this role... it was painful to watch. There was a lovely video of Yuri Soloviev in Chopiniana (not the one performing the waltz with Makarova, although that's incredible too) but this was filmed around 1975 in color, maybe some kind of Leningrad tv special. It was on YT maybe 5-6 years ago then vanished.
    Just for myself, I found Lunyov and Zaklinsky neither graceful nor understanding what this variation is about (and I HATED Lunyov's jump at the beginning... awful). I've always liked Zaklinsky but he isn't right for this. I saw Nagy in this and thought he was better than most of the dancers here. And contrary to some other opinions here, I thought Rudi was really lovely. He doesn't dance it in a "grand" way, he just uses rounded port de bras the way it should be danced. This is Les Sylphides not Don Q.

    I wonder why did Nureyev his variation like that?... The style is too grand IMO.
    Vasiliev's arms are too straight, and can be Zaklinsky's variation any slower? It's like pulling teeth :(
    What details have disappeared?

      nureyev did it like that because just one year after his defection he already was losing his kirov style and developing some of his awful mannerisms like stiff ugly arms and hands

  • @pediatrapaola
    @pediatrapaola 8 років тому

    imo nureyev in 62 aready had worst arms and mannerism than when he was in kirov

      Navarre Brixen l find here his arms already bad being stiff ,is not a style matter ,just stiffness
