lucyllebalth80 I agree. ....perfect in everything he does....there is hardly a breathing woman who wouldn't love to know him, even just to watch him move! A beautiful man who can dance!!!! Imagine I persist in thinking of him as a very young, talented dancer, actor, etc. so I looked it up...hell, he is my age! What happened to the last 20 years....and is Trump still "president"?
I can see why Baryshnikov left Balanchine after a few years; he had learned what he needed to. But the traditional ABT style is drenched in perfumed romanticism, while Balanchine is totally 20th century. In fact, in dance, Balanchine defined the modern century. It is best that Baryshnikov had both for a full artistic experience.
@Cate Lynn and Robert D. There are two different ballets with similar names. @ Jill Oliver and RolderWingNut, yes you are correct. La Sylphide was a ballet originally choreographed in 1832 for Marie Taglioni. It is a story ballet in two acts set in Scotland. Music used now is by Lovenskold. Les Sylphides was created in 1909 by the Ballets Russes and is considered the first plotless ballet. Music is by Chopin.
For a detailed discussion of this very performance, Chapter 7 of Ballet 101 by Robert Greskovic spells out every section, every different dance type, every ballerina, and of course, Baryshnikov's performance.
This is actually my fav version of Sylphides/Chopaniana. No, the ballerinas aren't the greatest stars, but the mood and style of it is the best I've seen.
You sure, Robert D? It looks like Les Sylphides to me and the Chopin score fits. I thought La Sylphide was the one set in Scotland with woodland nymphs and an actual story line. This one is pure dance, no story.
May I recommend viewing this while reading pp. 532-538 in Ballet 101 by Robert Greskovic. He discusses the ballet while referencing this very video. Really instructive.
I have Ballet 101 by Robert Greskovic and my edition shows Chapter 7 is on the Mikail Baryshnikov Les Sylphides, which must be what you are referring to. It's a detailed discussion, and it is definitely a description of this very performance.
Definitely not. This is Les Sylphides a.k.a. Chopiniana, La Sylphide is a completely different ballet, that is not a pure ballet blanc but has a story line. There are videos of it on youtube, too: POB with Aurélie Dupont as Sylph and Bolshoi with Krysanova I think.
Who are the ballerinas? The one on the right is Marianna Tcherkassky. 1984 production. Les Sylphindes, Mikhail Fokine's 1909 ballet, for Les Ballets Russes. For August Bournonville's 1836 ballet, see La Sylphide.
This is the ABT? What year and who are the two main ballerinas? I want to say that I think one of them is Alessandra Ferri, or at least one of them has amazing feet like she does!!!
The music is by Frederic Chopin. The most famous piece here is waltz in c-sharp minor op 64 no 2 (16:43). Here are the pieces present according to wikipedia (though usually the polonaise op 40 no 1 is included): Nocturne in A♭ major, Op. 32, No. 2 Waltz in G♭ major, Op. 70, No. 1 (transposed to G major) Mazurka in D major, Op. 33, No. 2 Mazurka in C major, Op. 67, No. 3 Prelude in A major, Op. 28, No. 7 Waltz in C♯ minor, Op. 64, No. 2 (transposed to D minor) Grande valse brillante in E♭ major, Op. 18 (transposed to D major)
Well there is a story.....more an excuse to dance to Chopin. He's an uninspired poet and the nymphs are his muses, helping to find ideas, inspiration for his writing.

I really enjoy this performance.
Cosita hermosa!! Te amo Misha!
This man is simply PERFECT in every things he do!!!

Very beautiful
He is absolute PERFECTION!!!!!
Divino....Espetacular!!!!!
Cheryl Yeager and Cynthia Harvey... both excellent, highly underrated dancers.
Absolutely beautiful! I love ballet.
It's Marianna Tcherkassky who's dancing the waltz with Misha. She was a terrific dancer, especially in the classic 'white' roles.
It’s so delightful to watch ❤️
Thank you, jetrael. I saw Marianna Tcherkassky years ago at ABT when I lived in NY. Thought she looked familiar - just beautiful.
Marianna - saw her do this in person years ago. She is gorgeous!

Absolutely beautiful to look at... I wonder in what year Mikhail did that performance.
Lovely. Wish the name of the valse or mazurka cd be mentioned somewhere.
Sehr Schön! Danke!
I Love ballet

The best is the waltz 16:43
Cynthia Harvey. Cheryl Yeager and Marianna Tchersky(sp)
❤❤❤
Nicely cut-off anti-climatic ending...well done for that genius piece of video editing....
Ningún dato! ¿Tiempo, espacio, las primeras bailarinas, batuta?
Lindissimo video, parabens!
Wonderful! But who else sang that last missing note?
Definitely not. This is Les Sylphides a.k.a. Chopiniana, La Sylphide is a completely different ballet, that is not a pure ballet blanc but has a story line. There are videos of it on youtube, too: POB with Aurélie Dupont as Sylph and Bolshoi with Krysanova I think.

cool
Thanks. :)
Gorgeous! Who is he performing with?
Does anyone know what ballet company this is & the Ballerina? And What Ballet Company..???
Looks like - and I am pretty sure - that the Ballerina is Cheryl Yeager and it is ABT.
Yeager, Marianna Cherkassky, and Cynthia Harvey are the ballerinas. it's ABT.
It all depends on where you are from. People pronounce and spell differently in different countries.
SUBLIME...
This is the ABT? What year and who are the two main ballerinas? I want to say that I think one of them is Alessandra Ferri, or at least one of them has amazing feet like she does!!!
with Marianna Tcherkassky
i want this music, can you tell me how i can get it?
The music is by Frederic Chopin. The most famous piece here is waltz in c-sharp minor op 64 no 2 (16:43). Here are the pieces present according to wikipedia (though usually the polonaise op 40 no 1 is included):
Nocturne in A♭ major, Op. 32, No. 2
Waltz in G♭ major, Op. 70, No. 1 (transposed to G major)
Mazurka in D major, Op. 33, No. 2
Mazurka in C major, Op. 67, No. 3
Prelude in A major, Op. 28, No. 7
Waltz in C♯ minor, Op. 64, No. 2 (transposed to D minor)
Grande valse brillante in E♭ major, Op. 18 (transposed to D major)
Anyone have a DATE this was made?
I'd guess 1984-5 or 6.
Well there is a story.....more an excuse to dance to Chopin. He's an uninspired poet and the nymphs are his muses, helping to find ideas, inspiration for his writing.
ABT?
Omg.. people are just nuts..
year of this ???
2011
:_[ this perfomance, what is the year of this perfomance . 85 84 ??
i think 1988
Hm. Baryshnikov doesn't sound like American ballet. Right?
Does Balanchine sound like American ballet :)
Accidently clivked this but... really good and a LOT of borres(not sure if i spelled that right)
Tcherkassky :)
*clicked
This is Chopin, absolutely NOT "Les Sylphides"!
fashistputin This is LES ......there is another ballet w/ similar title.
@@christinestill5002 Chopin IS Chopin, another ballet or not.
