So nice to see so many dear old colleagues and friends,, the beautiful ABT corps de ballet ladies of the MISHA years. Everyone of them so beautiful and good natured. The last years of the golden age of dance
For those that are of today's age, Ballet Theater, as it was then known, was the last complete oversee by Michel Fokine of his ballet and Dimitri Romanoff, regisseur, was in charge of rehearsing this ballet. I came into the company in 1958 as a corps dancer with Michael Lland, Royes Fernandez, John Kriza and Erik Bruhn being the male stars. The lady ballerinas were Ruth Ann Koesun, Nora Kaye, Violette Verdy, Lupe Serrano. The second soloists also danced some of the roles sometimes. Still my favorite "white" ballet and this is a marvelous production. Dimitri was a task master for this ballet and the corps girls were not too pleased when this was scheduled.
Eric Bruhn was the boyfriend/lover of Rudolf Nureyev. Nureyev got AIDS from Eric and died young, as a result. I met Nureyev in Hawaii where my father played in the orchestra for Nureyev. I was on stage during the dress rehearsal and made eye contact with him. Now I know he was gay, maybe he was checking me out?!
@currie pederson My ballet teachers, Robert and Carol Brotherton Hanlin also danced with ABT about the same time. When Carol taught us Les Sylphides, she said the same thing about Michel Fokine overseeing the ballet for ABT. That always made me feel special and that we had the true choreography. Our regional company has since repeated Les Sylphides with my daughter dancing in the corps. However, they were taught the Royal Ballet version. I am going to share this version with her and your comments. Thank you for sharing, Diana
Just lovely, soulful, the music of Chopin, choreography, dancers. Best version i have seen. What an esthetic audio, visual experience. Someone said dance makes music visible, it applies so much here. Thank you!
Bighin GIULIO RENZO
Every time I watch this great performance I realize how much we love to find order in our universe. The choreography and staging remind me that art has the ability to bring proportion to the otherwise chaotic world of human error and misdeeds. When I see the intricate coordinated movement I think about how all these dancers have the ability to perform as a unity, subsuming their individual artistry to attain a higher level. // This takes me way back -- I was about 11 years old when I first heard this: from a big box of classical records that my father got us. This is music for my soul. The Waltz in C sharp Minor, Opus 64, No. 2 begins at 18:26.
I miss you David. You are the most beautiful soul with the kindest heart and that VOICE. What I wouldn’t give for another conversation with you at the Wild West way back when, all I did is ask you where Rick was…wish I had gone to the PP with you from the Crazy Horse when you swept me off of my feet…albeit in stilettos of course and you in sneakers…ahhhh such memories! 😉😊
The ABT has just started a run of this wonderful ballet (Nov. 2013). I look forward to the reviews and hope to see it. Such a perfect marriage of Chopin and dance.
Fokine's great summation of romanticism. Gossamer lightness, the ethereal sylphs ( air elementals ) The first plotless ballet ? The male dancer variously described as a poet, or even the personification of Chopin.
Hermoso, de principio a fin. Música y baile. Beautiful from the start to the end. And dancers are perfect...
If this was filmed just 8 years ago, then Baryshnikov is in his 60s, dancing! His leaps are still incredible! Lovely and exquisite production! Chopin and ballet, a marriage made in heaven!
Curious. I found a page of Fokine's notes on the opening floor patterns and he had three more dancers on each side wing. I wonder if abt's choice of a smallee corp du ballet was budgetary, technical, or whatever. Given the location, not due to the size of the stage I guess.
Awesome. So exceedingly soft and melting that I kind of missed the bolder, more carpenter-like approach taken by Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo.
Whose arrangements are they using? ... Benjamin Britten was commissioned to do an orchestration for this company when he was in New York at the start of the 2nd world war, so maybe the ballet is being danced to his version. At any rate, the arranger's name should have been mentioned in the credits.

There's no room nor cause for disagreement w you on this, Moody!
I second that..!
In addition to a few other things. 🎃. 🎃. 🎃
That’s funny, I got here from a mention in The Handmaid’s Tale book
MOODY Thank you for that, I totally agree.
Today my father would have turned 91. I decided to put together a concert of pieces he loved. This had to be part of it.

soooooooooooooooooooooo beautiful
Makes me cry.😢 Remembering those moments in ballet.❤
La nostalgique de Chopin est magnifique...
What a treat thank you so much for the Post
Stupendo balletto per una musica splendida. Tutto è armonia e melodia in un intreccio d'arte semplicemente unico.

@@atlantargh So that introductory part is not from the Waltz?
@@rr7firefly The introductory part is from op 25 no 7. I'm not very sure why they added it to the orchestral version of the waltz.

Yes, it was the first plotless ballet, at least on an international scale.
This is my favorite ballet. It has everything (except a male chorus). Fokine was a genius as was, of course, Chopin.
